Buried way down in a press release today:

In addition to the $140 million in new funding the Governor proposed in his Fiscal Year 2006 Budget, the Governor is proposing an additional $300 million in new funding for education, by authorizing an increase of positions at Illinois’ existing riverboat casinos.

Waiting on a callback, but the AP says this:

His plan would allow a total of between 23,000 and 24,000 gambling positions at the casinos … up from the current 11,000.

The dam has been breached.

G-Rod needs to come up with some new revenue. Since Emil doesn’t want to hike the tobacco tax, and Frank and Tom aren’t fond of the software tax, the guv has to look somewhere else to see what they will support.

  2. - Anonymous - Thursday, Mar 31, 05 @ 10:27 pm:

im fine with the increased positions. the important thing is that blago is doing this to provide more money for education. if he is able to do this while not caving to the casino mongers, he is sticking by his word.

  3. - Anonymous - Friday, Apr 1, 05 @ 1:14 am:

You’re fine with him breaking his explicit campaign promise not to expand gaming, including increasing positions at existing boats?

  4. - Anonymous - Wednesday, Apr 6, 05 @ 8:10 am:

    Real educational reform is needed.
