This just in… New poll says 84 percent want guv to resign *** 73 percent want him impeached ***

Thursday, Dec 11, 2008

*** 3:14 PM *** The AP runs a snippet of that Glengariff Group poll I told subscribers about this morning…

Of the 600 people surveyed by phone Tuesday and Wednesday, 70% think he should resign. And 73% say they’d support moves to impeach him. [emphasis added]

* A new poll by Rasmussen Reports tracks pretty well with a Glengariff Group poll that I told my subscribers about this morning…

Eighty-four percent (84%) of Illinois voters say indicted Governor Rod Blagojevich should resign, according to a Rasmussen Reports telephone survey in the state Wednesday night. Just nine percent (9%) disagree.

Seventy-nine percent (79%) say Blagojevich should end up in jail.

Despite the strong desire for the governor to resign, only 18% believe he is Very Likely to step down. Another 22% say a resignation is Somewhat Likely.

Just seven percent (7%) say the governor is doing a good or excellent job in office while 83% rate his performance as poor.

[Hat tip to a commenter in our breaking news thread.]

Unlike the Glengariff Group, Rasmussen Reports did not ask about impeachment.

* We also have some new RR results on a special election

Sixty-six percent (66%) of all Illinois voters say the state should hold a special election to fill Obama’s Senate seat rather than let Governor Rod Blagojevich or his successor appoint a replacement. Twenty-one percent (21%) disagree, and 13% are undecided.

Among Illinois voters, 74% of Republicans, 66% of Democrats and 60% of unaffiliated voters favor a special election. Obama still has two years remaining in his Senate term.

* And

Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan has surged to the lead among Democrats on the list of favorites to take Barack Obama’s place in the U.S. Senate at the expense of Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr., whose image clearly has suffered in the growing Blagojevich scandal.

Thirty-two percent (32%) of Illinois Democrats now say Madigan should be named to the seat vacated by Obama, the state’s junior Democratic senator, according to a Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of Illinois voters taken Wednesday night.

In a Rasmussen Reports survey last week, Jackson was the top choice of a plurality of the state’s Democratic voters (36%), but with the revelation that he is “Senate Candidate 5,” his support has been cut in half to just 18% now.

A week ago, Madigan was third on the list of five favorites among Democratic voters, with 17% support.

* Methodology

This telephone survey of 500 Likely Voters was conducted by Rasmussen Reports December 10, 2008. The margin of sampling error for the survey is +/- 4.5 percentage points with a 95% level of confidence

Not only are Illinois voters stupid, but they are wimps. How many people from Illinois showed up for Obama’s election night party? How many people from Illinois were at his campaign announcement? There should be TWICE as many people camped outside Rod Blagojevich’s home and Chicago office with pitchforks and torches demanding his immediate resignation. There should be a mob of Illinois voters, that really care about change and that really believed the Obama hype that they were the change they seek, blocking Rod Blagojevich from leaving his home to go to the Governor’s office and another mob of voters at his office keeping Rod Blagojevich from going into the Governor’s office. And this should be a complete no-brainer for Illinois Republicans and independents.

Illinois voters screwed up royally. If they had any guts or pride or even a care in the world for their fellow citizens they would fix it themselves.

You can’t wait for Michael Madigan to figure out the best political angle on how to deal with impeachment that will make him look good and his daughter look good to replace Blago. You can’t wait for Patrick Fitzgerald and the legitimately slow balances of justice. You can’t wait for Rod Blagojevich to come to his senses and resign. You need to fix it. Go buy a pitchfork and head for Chicago or at least spread the word.

100,000 people outside Rod Blagojevich’s home and office demanding his resignation should do the trick. If not, it will at least keep him from going to work. And it would maybe show the rest of this country that Illinoisans have at least a little of bit of a spine and half a brain.

GO NOW. REMOVE BLAGOJEVICH FROM OFFICE YOURSELF. YOU ARE THE CHANGE YOU SEEK. PEACE!

  2. - SLICK - Thursday, Dec 11, 08 @ 12:27 pm:

    SO:
    1. If Quinn takes Gov. spot and appoints Lisa = Who will be next AG?
    2. If Quinn takes Senate spot Lisa moves to Gov. spot = Who will be next AG?
Either way someone “new” gets to be AG.
    Just asking.

  3. - ChiGal - Thursday, Dec 11, 08 @ 12:34 pm:

I don’t think PQ will appoint himself but appointing Lisa to the senate spot would certainly help him get elected governor in 2010.

  4. - wordslinger - Thursday, Dec 11, 08 @ 12:36 pm:

I think the only Illinois resident who can make Blago resign now is Fitz. And that would take a deal I’m not sure many of us could stomach. Remember, there are all those other investigations out there still.

  5. - Captain America - Thursday, Dec 11, 08 @ 12:37 pm:

I like Madiagan as the Senate pick.

It sets up a Hynes, Alexi, Quinn face-off for the Governor’s mansion. I like Dan Hynes” chances in that race.

  6. - South side - Thursday, Dec 11, 08 @ 12:39 pm:

I don’t trust anyone of these people. It’s time for the citizens of Illinois to elect someone. The Madigans, Pat Quinn, Jesse Jackson, Durbin and many others are all out for themsleves. It’s time for a complete change in Illinois.

  7. - True Observer - Thursday, Dec 11, 08 @ 12:55 pm:

The only poll that counts is the Ward and Township Committemen vote on who to slate.

  8. - Luis - Thursday, Dec 11, 08 @ 1:00 pm:

South side I agree. Where was Durbin, Quinn, Madigan, and Obama the day Resko Was Indicted, the week before the 2006 Election?

Did they once ask Blago to step aside?

  9. - Luis - Thursday, Dec 11, 08 @ 1:06 pm:

Captain America I agree. Hynes would be the winner.

Alexi is a non starter due to Broadway Bank. Obama will not endorse him for Governor due to that.

Of course all bets are off if any of these folks are part of the FBI Investigation, including Madigan.

  10. - Skeeter - Thursday, Dec 11, 08 @ 1:15 pm:

16% DON’T want Blago to resign?

Was that 16% or 16 VOTERS who do not want him to resign?

We have Rod, Patty, and Bill. Who are the others?

[Note — I was out of town for a few days. If Bill has turned on Blago, my bad for including him here].

  11. - What planet is he from again? - Thursday, Dec 11, 08 @ 1:20 pm:

But Lisa was on NPR saying she was not interested in the Senate seat?

  12. - How Ironic - Thursday, Dec 11, 08 @ 1:32 pm:

    What Planet-
Heard the interview last night. I think she would be interested if it was offered by someone OTHER than Blago. If Quinn is going to be Gov, she would probably take it in a second.

  13. - Phil Collins - Thursday, Dec 11, 08 @ 1:37 pm:

Captain America, I agree that Quinn, Hynes, and Alexi should run for governor. If no incumbent runs for comptroller and treasurer, a few Republicans will run for each position, and Republicans will have a better chance of winning at least one of them.

  14. - Joe in the Know - Thursday, Dec 11, 08 @ 1:49 pm:

    84% want Rod to resign
16% did not understand the question.

  15. - downstater - Thursday, Dec 11, 08 @ 2:17 pm:

    Rod,
You must fight on. Never, ever surrender!
Keep up the fight. Your best chance to win is to remain in office as Governor.

There is a large group of us that support your efforts to stay in office and fight each and every charge….namely every member of the Illinois Republican Party!

  16. - Luis - Thursday, Dec 11, 08 @ 3:02 pm:

    Downstater, how right you are.

Every day that Blago stays in office, the weaker it makes Obama look.

If the President-Elect cannot even get his home state, same party Governor to step down, how can he deal with the Russians and Iranians?

  17. - Ben - Thursday, Dec 11, 08 @ 3:49 pm:

Yeah, because Obama doesn’t have anything else important to do besides preparing his administration to fix up the mess of the past eight years on day one!

  18. - Belle - Thursday, Dec 11, 08 @ 4:06 pm:

I don’t think you’ll find many Illinoisians willing to elect anyone to any office if they are from Chicago. A lot of Chicagoans are fed up too. Lets face it, we beat out La and NJ as the most politically corrupt state in the union. If they could the other states might vote us out of that union. Now chant with pride WE’RE NUMBER ONE! WE’RE NUMBER ONE!

  19. - Six Degrees of Separation - Thursday, Dec 11, 08 @ 5:27 pm:

    It’s basically an up day.

He has raised his approval rating from 13% to 16%!

  20. - blaGONE - Thursday, Dec 11, 08 @ 5:45 pm:

    The numbers explained:

    84% want Rod to resign
16% are members of his staff

Can you imagine how they wimper and hide every time their doorbells ring?

  21. - Blogopster - Thursday, Dec 11, 08 @ 10:58 pm:

“This country, with its institutions, belongs to the people who inhabit it. Whenever they shall grow weary of the existing Government, they can exercise their constitutional right of amending it, or their revolutionary right to dismember or overthrow it. I cannot be ignorant of the fact that many worthy and patriotic citizens are desirous of having the national Constitution amended. While I make no recommendation of amendments, I fully recognize the rightful authority of the people over the whole subject to be exercised in either of the modes prescribed in the instrument itself; and I should, under existing circumstances, favor rather than oppose a fair opportunity being afforded the people to act upon it.” Abraham Lincoln
