This just in… Report: Burris to announce candidacy tonight at “Vain” nightclub *** Or not? ***

Friday, Jun 19, 2009

* 3:22 pm - Speaking of relentlessly bad news

Burris is expected tonight to announce in Chicago that he will campaign to hold onto Barack Obama’s former seat in 2010.

Storms in Chicago delayed Burris’ arrival on a flight from Washington. He is now expected to hold a news conference at O’Hare Airport shortly after 3:30 p.m. He is expected to revel in the decision by Springfield’s prosecutor John Schmidt not to lodge perjury charges against Burris.

* 4:03 pm - The comedy writes itself. I didn’t notice this at the bottom of the story…

Tonight’s election announcement by Burris is set for a nightclub called “Vain” at 2354 Clybourn in the city.

I’m speechless.

This is gonna be one fun campaign to cover. Delmarie Cobb strikes again.

*** 4:18 pm *** OK, I shoulda known it was all too good to be true. I’m getting that the CBS2 story linked above is not accurate and there’s no announcement coming.

Sigh.

    POP!!!

    Oh, look. A kitty.

  3. - OneMan - Friday, Jun 19, 09 @ 3:30 pm:

    Yes!!!

You can’t buy entertainment like that…

  4. - True Observer - Friday, Jun 19, 09 @ 3:31 pm:

He’s the only one who can claim a clean bill of health from the DA.

  5. - OneMan - Friday, Jun 19, 09 @ 3:37 pm:

Burris in 2010 — He just discovered the military has research labs, just imagine what he can learn in another 6 years in the Senate!

    The Government Owns Land!
    NASA launches Stuff from Florida!
The Military has specialized educational institutions!
The Internets are a collection to Tubes!

  6. - sal-says - Friday, Jun 19, 09 @ 3:37 pm:

    Uh-huh. Must be drugs?

  7. - Secret Square - Friday, Jun 19, 09 @ 3:38 pm:

Reminds me of the old joke about a politican who had been released from an insane asylum, who campaigned on the fact that he was the ONLY candidate in the race who had officially been declared sane.

  8. - Suzanne - Friday, Jun 19, 09 @ 3:38 pm:

Clean? No. Just not prosecutable. Still, there’s nothing to worry about. While I and several other strong organizers can run one heck of a campaign with $875, Sen. Burris is just not as gifted. ;-)

  9. - Sewanee - Friday, Jun 19, 09 @ 3:40 pm:

Think holding a press conference at one of the busiest airports in the world is the only way he’ll draw a crowd?

I can picture it now: Burris announces to a gate-ful of passengers waiting on a delayed flight.

  10. - Anonymous - Friday, Jun 19, 09 @ 3:41 pm:

Burris for Senate Campaign slogan, “Omissions, misleading statements and vague explanations are not perjury in the legal sense”

  11. - Rich Miller - Friday, Jun 19, 09 @ 3:43 pm:

I can’t understand why Burris would announce his campaign on a Friday night. Isn’t that usually when you bury bad news?

    Oh, wait….

  12. - Downstate weed chewing hick - Friday, Jun 19, 09 @ 3:46 pm:

That dark cloud following Roland is not a storm.

  13. - IrishPirate - Friday, Jun 19, 09 @ 3:52 pm:

It must have hurt his overabundant ego that President Obama met with Lisa Madigan.

Now Burris can fire back with what promises to be an electrifying announcement of his intention to continue to serve the People of Illinois.

  14. - Obamarama - Friday, Jun 19, 09 @ 3:52 pm:

Why not? It isn’t like he has anything to lose. Sangamon cleared him today, the Senate Ethics Panel is a joke and presents little real threat to his membership, and he doesn’t really have any other options–either public or private.

If someone wants me to hand over the only thing in the world of value that I have, I’d tell them to come take it from me too.

That all being said, I hope he gets absolutely embarrassed in the primary; he deserves it.

  15. - OneMan - Friday, Jun 19, 09 @ 3:52 pm:

Perhaps he is announcing at the airport so he can fund raise by returning those luggage carts..

  16. - Long-time Lurker - Friday, Jun 19, 09 @ 3:53 pm:

Capitol Fax does it again…I’m laughing out loud as I read the posts here. This was exactly the humor I needed to see late on a Friday afternoon. Thank you!

  17. - OneMan - Friday, Jun 19, 09 @ 3:54 pm:

If he takes questions at this announcement how long will it take for someone to ask…

    “Are you serious?”

  18. - SweetLou - Friday, Jun 19, 09 @ 3:55 pm:

Secret Square, I want to say that it’s a true story about a former White Sox color commentator. Can anyone back me up?

  19. - How Ironic - Friday, Jun 19, 09 @ 3:58 pm:

I heard that Winnie the Pooh will be his official campaign spokesbear. They both sound the same!

  20. - OneMan - Friday, Jun 19, 09 @ 3:58 pm:

    James Anthony Piersall for senate

“Probably the best thing that ever happened to me was going nuts. Who ever heard of Jimmy Piersall, until that happened?”

  21. - GOP - Friday, Jun 19, 09 @ 4:00 pm:

I am pretty sure this news will scare Lisa Madigan out of the race….NOT!!!

  22. - I wish I were Mrs. Guillen - Friday, Jun 19, 09 @ 4:08 pm:

Maybe he’s actually running for Comptroller?*

    * think of the SNL sketch… lol.

  23. - OneMan - Friday, Jun 19, 09 @ 4:13 pm:

    Check out the club’s website

    http://www.clubvainchicago.com/

“The trendyist place to bring sass to Lincoln Park”

Also check out the pictures on the front page of the web site.

Look like is going for the Lincoln Park Trixie vote

  24. - 312 - Friday, Jun 19, 09 @ 4:18 pm:

The Carly Simon song “You’re So Vain” keeps running through my head!

“You probably think this song is about you…”

  25. - IrishPirate - Friday, Jun 19, 09 @ 4:18 pm:

Perhaps the building that houses “Vain” can get one of those historical markers and then be “landmarked” because of the occasion.

“Burris announced here” will be as famous as “Washington Slept here”.

  26. - Secret Square - Friday, Jun 19, 09 @ 4:20 pm:

Someone, somewhere, probably took Jimmy Piersall’s “certificate of sanity” story and reworked it into a political joke.

  27. - sal-says - Friday, Jun 19, 09 @ 4:22 pm:

Apparently burris thinks that evading a perjury charge makes him a great candidate ! Keep up the sub-par thinking, rollie.

  28. - sal-says - Friday, Jun 19, 09 @ 4:24 pm:

IL Politics === Just TOO Much Fun…..

  29. - Ms Port Belly Mushroom - Friday, Jun 19, 09 @ 4:24 pm:

John Schmidt may have just elevated his stature among the GOP statewide. This does more for them than any perjury indictment could ever have accomplished.

  30. - And I Approved This Message - Friday, Jun 19, 09 @ 4:27 pm:

Delmarie Cobb should be changed with malpractice.
Friday night? At a place called Vain? When half of the Saturday papers will be stories about these storms. He has no money and no apparent support. I’m guessing this is going to be all about the race card, start to finish.

  31. - OneMan - Friday, Jun 19, 09 @ 4:28 pm:

Perhaps Vain is offering them a discount of bottle service…

  32. - Ms Port Belly Mushroom - Friday, Jun 19, 09 @ 4:43 pm:

Somewhere, Rod Blagojevich is smiling, playing air guitar and singing Elvis tunes to his shelf lined with Jay Hoffman bobblehead dolls!

  33. - KGB - Friday, Jun 19, 09 @ 5:01 pm:

Lyrics to Culture Beat’s “Mr. Vain” are much more appropriate:

    Call him Mr. Raider
    call him Mr. Wrong
call him Mr. Vain (Vain Vain).

    Call him Mr. Raider
    call him Mr. Wrong
    call him insane(insane insane) insane.

    He’d say:
    I know what I want
    and I want it now!

  34. - Big 19 / Big 9 - Friday, Jun 19, 09 @ 6:03 pm:

actually, i just received a solicitation to give to his campaign, and it asks me to “support roland burris in 2010″, so something is surely afoot.

  35. - Gregor - Friday, Jun 19, 09 @ 6:39 pm:

Rich, you beat me to it: late Friday is when you put out your most embarrassing but unavoidable public announcements, in the hope nobody will notice or care, because all the reporters are out getting blasted (present company excepted, of course). Had Burris waited until Monday, he’d have a fresh news cycle grinding on it for days.

  36. - CircularFiringSquad - Friday, Jun 19, 09 @ 9:37 pm:

We are clearly set to blow this one!

  37. - Ahem...The REAL Anonymous - Friday, Jun 19, 09 @ 10:41 pm:

Based on the pix on the website, just being photographed walking into the place should keep the rumormill alive for weeks. lol
