The House has adjourned

Tuesday, Jun 30, 2009

* 7:45 pm - Speaker Madigan just adjourned the chamber and told members to prepare to come back to deal with Gov. Quinn’s budget veto overrides. He told a couple members of the press that he would be voting for those overrides.

I’ll have Madigan press availability and adjournment speech video in about 20 minutes.

* 8:05 pm - OK, here’s the avail vid. Madigan was asked at one point about the governor’s apparent habit of changing his mind. Worth a look…

* Speaker Madigan adjourns the House and tells members what to expect…

Quinn is no match for the chess master. Meanwhile Illinois falls deeper and deeper into the abyss. I guess Blago wasnt the problem.

  5. - TheCommonDenominator - Tuesday, Jun 30, 09 @ 8:07 pm:

what chess master? Madigan is ruining the state. no leadership out of the house for the last 6 years has put Illinois where it is right now. that’s not chess–it is neglect.

  6. - Common Citizen - Tuesday, Jun 30, 09 @ 8:11 pm:

and so these legislators prove once again…..there is no moral courage at the statehouse….and shame on you who keep voting the same ones in for your myopic self-interest

  7. - Three Strikes U R Out - Tuesday, Jun 30, 09 @ 8:15 pm:

I thought the budget bill was being held. Has it now been sent to the Gov.?

  8. - Anon - Tuesday, Jun 30, 09 @ 8:20 pm:

what a coward. Why is he in charge?

  9. - RJW - Tuesday, Jun 30, 09 @ 8:21 pm:

    Three Strikes:

All holds released. It’s up to the Gov now to do something with the budgets as passed in May.

What happened with the Pension Note? Anybody?

  10. - newb - Tuesday, Jun 30, 09 @ 8:26 pm:

Excuse me if I missed this but has the budget that was passed by the GA even been sent to Gov?

  11. - RJW - Tuesday, Jun 30, 09 @ 8:27 pm:

    Newb:

Yes. If you look at the GA reports on the GA website you will see that all of the budgets were sent yesterday and today.

  12. - Anonymous - Tuesday, Jun 30, 09 @ 8:32 pm:

Thank you, Pat Quinn…. for standing up to Madigan. It is about time, we change leadership, get Madigan out!!! And certainly, not elect another one into office.

  13. - sickofthis - Tuesday, Jun 30, 09 @ 8:35 pm:

Madigan is an always has been the problem. He has the House standing at attention and completely neglecting the People of Illinois.

  14. - seriously - Tuesday, Jun 30, 09 @ 8:42 pm:

how do you turn a blue state red? Blago, Madigan, Jones, Cullerton, Quinn….ugh what have we done.

  15. - claire - Tuesday, Jun 30, 09 @ 8:47 pm:

I’m keeping up on my bberry. Can someone let us know what Madigan expects to happen? Thanks.

  16. - anonymous - Tuesday, Jun 30, 09 @ 8:49 pm:

its time to revolt..don’t pay state income taxes…keep that money and use it to serve your families..or donate it to your favorite charity!

  17. - wordslinger - Tuesday, Jun 30, 09 @ 8:55 pm:

Shouldn’t someone be happy with the House? Like the anti-tax folks who say we have to live within our means?

Where’s the praise for the House for defeating a tax increase, and for Madigan for not muscling one through?

Why aren’t House Republicans taking a victory lap around the state saying they kept taxes down?

Is it that everybody wants new revenues, but wants the other guy to take the heat for it?

  18. - Art of the Possible - Tuesday, Jun 30, 09 @ 9:18 pm:

As Madigan put it quite correctly: the state will pass new revenue as soon as 71 members of the House and 36 members of the Senate come to the judgment that the state has a responsibility to provide vital services.

As of right now, they’re about 17 members short of that in the House.

True, Madigan is The Speaker, and members have delegated a great deal of authority to him.

But they cannot delegate their responsibility, and at the end of the day, they are solely responsible for how they vote. Democrat, Republican, Safe Seat, Target.

118 members of the House collect a paycheck to do a job. When they don’t do it, and you blame Madigan or Cross instead of them, you’re HELPING them try to avoid their responsibility, and you’re not bringing things any closer to a resolution.

  19. - DuPage Dave - Tuesday, Jun 30, 09 @ 9:32 pm:

re: “how do you turn a blue state red?”

Get real. The Dems are in disarray but the Repubs are a total disaster in Illinois. They have no leadership, no organization and only offer their one-note song “cut taxes” as the solution to everything. The average person may not love the Dems, but they know the Repubs are full of baloney or worse.

The Dems may not be able to run the state smoothly, but they are operating on a reality basis. Revenue is down and costs are up- so deal with it somehow. Of course the “how” is vexing them at the moment. But they are much closer to reality than the Repubs will ever be.

I saw Schillerstrom on TV tonight- how does he get interviewed about this? He has no vote. Same old DuPage County blowhardism (and I’ve lived here 25 years so I’ve heard it a lot). “Cut taxes, cut taxes, get rid of waste and fraud.”

As they said in the old days, sounds like a broken record….
