Unsolicited advice

Tuesday, Sep 15, 2009

* Dear Jay Cutler,

I wish I could believe you when you promise “things will be better,” but I don’t. Then again, could they get much worse?

* Dear 19 members of the Cook County Democratic Central Committee,

Did voting “Present” on the roll call to slate Pat Quinn during Friday’s meeting mean you supported nobody or that you supported Dan Hynes’ request that nobody be slated? I only ask because nine voted to slate Hynes. Please, clear that up.

* Dear Rod Blagojevich,

Does everything have to be about you? Do you not realize how absolutely self-centered and moronic it is to issue a press release telling the world you’ll be attending Chris Kelly’s funeral?

* Dear Todd Stroger,

Does this story [fixed link] mean you’ve reached the “anger” phase? Please, speed up your grief phases and get to the “acceptance” level so we can be done with you.

* Dear Congresscritter Mike Quigley,

Actually, the “arch conservatives” I know don’t argue that government should always “stay out of people’s lives.” So, calling yourself one as you announce your support for gay marriage really isn’t all that logical.

* Dear Belleville police spokesman Don Sax,

Announcing to the media that a fight between teenagers on a school bus was “racially motivated” after simply reviewing a videotape was obviously a stupid thing to do. Didn’t you notice that it was black kids who broke it up? Drudge, thankfully, took down the gigantic, blaring headline after you corrected yourself.

* Your turn…

    Dear Ron Turner: Can you please stop calling bubble screens to Wide Receivers on 3d down and long?

    Dear UI President White: What is your biggest regret as UI President? is it that you failed to show a spine to any politician during the clout scandal? Your scalping of Chief Illiniwek? The huge amount of money UI lost with your asinine promotion of online learning?

    Being a Minnesota Viking fan I was not that disappointed to see the Bears lose. Although the Packers losing would have been just as good. However after watching the game I think that a lot of the sportscasters who were all down on Cutler did not see that a lot of the problems were with his receiving corps. When your receivers do not run the routes they are supposed to, or trip up when they turn around for the ball, interceptions follow. And I did not see one instance where a receiver came back to the ball to get in front of a defender. I blame a lot of the loss on those receivers.

    Andy McKenna stay out of the gubernatorial race!

    Matt Murphy just stick to being a senator!

    Proft, Andrzejewski and Schillerstrom get out of the gubernatorial race NOW!

    Brady and Dillard, I like you both because you both understand Springfield. But, one of you will lose. How about the weaker of you two go for Lt. Governor instead? You two balance each other nicely.

  10. - Okay Then... - Tuesday, Sep 15, 09 @ 2:43 pm:

    Pat Brady,

    No more weak and political statments from the IL GOP on the Burr Oak situation. You went political and your mocking tone is very unseemly under the circumstances. This is a grim situation that is not to be played with by anyone for political advantage. Tom Dart is the only democrat I will vote for, all politicians should and must learn from his example!

    Brady’s “GOP” statement on Burr Oak is not representative of all republicans in Illinois. Dillard and Brady if either of you decide to comment on Burr Oak, tread lightly, show some respect for the bereaved and deceased, and look to Dart’s example.

    Dear Illinois Republicans,
    Remember, a strong foundation is built on something, not just being against everything.
    Dear Illinois Democrats,
    We all know President Obama came from Illinois, so do something besides claiming any connection you can think of to be close to him.
    Dear IHRO,
    If your goal is to get control of the Illinois House, then recruit and run candidates that have a shot at winning, or just admit you can’t beat Madigan and actually be the “loyal minority”.
    Dear anyone related to anyone who is an elected official,
    If you want your mom’s, dad’s, uncle’s, aunt’s, cousin’s, etc., elected job, then run in an open primary first, and DON’T accept the appointment.
    Dear city of Chicago,
    Remember downstate. They are a big supporter of what you think is important when you need help.
    Dear downstate,
    Remember Chicago is THE economic engine of the Midwest, so when you support Chicago, you are helping yourselves too.

    A good start ….

    Dear ILGOP candidates,

    Please STOP with the Reagan era talking points, ideas, rhetoric and vision. Some of us were in preschool then and we’d prefer some new ideas.

    Dear Jay Cutler, Chad Ochocinco, and TO,

    Rich - “Did voting “Present” on the roll call…”

    Looks like both based on the list. Either that or the folks who voted for Hynes instead of claiming Present didn’t get the memo. ;)

    At least Madigan has an excuse. Quinn will be a lame duck for nearly a year if he loses in Feb. And if Hynes wins in Feb and November Madigan will have to work with him as guv starting in 2011.

    Dear Blago,

    Will you be selling your book is the lobby of the funeral home or down in the snack room? Will there be a discounted price for friends and family?

  29. - Okay Then... - Tuesday, Sep 15, 09 @ 3:24 pm:

    Dan Hynes,

    Are you really going to let someone who is old enough to be your dad beat you in the gubernatorial primary race? Toughen up young man! I don’t know why your opponent constantly puts you down because of your age, for he was your age once. And, you are more politically accomplished at 41-years-old than he was at 41.

    Don’t let the Dem leadership guilt trip you with that “for the good of the party” nonsense. You owe them nothing. Go for broke and bloddy Pat Quinn up! He can’t run as a “reformer” and “good government/tas payer friend” type any more, so what’s he got? He’s a special interest man now.

    If you lose, you’ll easily find a job in the private sector. You lost to Barack Obama, and everybody understands why/how and no one faults you for that, but to lose to Pat Quinn. Do you really want to go down like that? I’m just sayin’.

  30. - ahem - Tuesday, Sep 15, 09 @ 3:24 pm:

    * Dear Pat Quinn: Please be the governor that Illinois deserves.

    * Dear Rod Blagojevich: Please keep your head down and your mouth shut at Chris Kelly’s funeral.

  31. - Okay Then... - Tuesday, Sep 15, 09 @ 3:37 pm:

    Pat Quinn,

    You are a very nice guy. You’ve been hardworking and diligent your entire political career. Do you really want to lose the gubneratorial primary to a young guy who if he had some other lesser known last name in political circles would likely not be where he is today? You know what it is like out there for the non-politically connected. It’s tough, and you’re a man who has shown that if one believes, one can achieve. And, in that respect you are an inspiration.

    Don’t be denied your moment of political triumph to some political legacy candidate. You’ve got the power of incumbency in your favor, so use it. Go ahead and bloody Dan Hynes up. Use your well honed political skills and boot straps personality to set an example for others apsiring to reach the highest heights of Illinois politics/government.

    Go for the political kill. Take Dan Hynes out ASAP. You’ll be sorry if you don’t. Smooth sailing to Feb 2, 2010!!!!

    Guess what, in Kansas, the Arkansas River is pronounced “RKansas River.”

  33. - Johnnyc - Tuesday, Sep 15, 09 @ 3:51 pm:

    Dear Rich, The answer to your question is there were committeemen who voted present b/c they wanted an open primary or were torn (probably Schulter), some who supported Hynes (Walton, as she endorsed DH immediately afterwards), and some who aren’t comfortable voting against the guy who, but for them, would not be a statewide officeholder.

  34. - Quacktastic - Tuesday, Sep 15, 09 @ 3:51 pm:

    Rich, Do you have a copy of the Cook County Prez roll call? I am wondering how the dozen or so committeemen who work for the county voted. All I have is second hand memory from some tired and burnt out committemen who would rather not tell all.

  37. - ArchPundit - Tuesday, Sep 15, 09 @ 4:05 pm:

    Dear commenters,

    Whoever had comment 5 for the Demuzio reference in any story involving Blagojevich and a funeral, you win. Oh, wait, everyone had 1 and 2 in the pool.

    I swear to God the man could be a serial killer and the first line of his obit would still be the Demuzio funeral–perhaps rightfully since it sums up his character pretty perfectly.

  38. - wordslinger - Tuesday, Sep 15, 09 @ 4:23 pm:

    Don’t worry, It’s going to get a lot better with Cutler.

    Here’s the basic game plan: Hester or Knox deep, the other making a cut, Bennett getting open, Olsen down the middle and Forte as the hot.

    That’s some firepower, although they’re young. Cutler makes the difference. They just have to play together a little bit.

    It’s going to be good. Cutler was so wound up in the first half, he obviously couldn’t see straight. Both offenses were very ragged.

    Put it this way: the Bears hit one pass of more than 30 yards in 16 games last year. On Sunday, they did it twice. You’re going to see a lot of that this year.

    Cutler’s a long-term investment. And it was a great one.

    Dear Illinois Republican Party,

    There are 6 statewide offices, not 4. Do the electorate a favor and run credible, honest to goodness, candidates for AG and SOS. Otherwise, have a press conference and congratulate Lisa and Jesse.

    Dear General Assembly Scholarship recipients,

    Some of you are just pawns in this forever dance, so do your best. You got your scholarships, so if you gave back to your community, at some point, that might even be better. An education is a powerful tool.

  41. - Time to take a step back - Tuesday, Sep 15, 09 @ 4:31 pm:

    Does this mean that you will be taking a step back between now and January, 2011? Although I tend to agree with you on some of these people, it now has become obvious what you feel on all of them. As a result, sort of like how you like to crack on Mother Tribune, any future events that occur with these people and your reporting of it will be “slanted”!

    Dear ILGOP’s conservative and non-conservative wings…

    When I was in high school I wanted to see Thornton and Thornwood lose in the worst way when they played us and lose in general. However if they made it downstate we wanted to see them win since they were from the same district and conference (SICA East back then), keep that in mind if nothing else we are in the same conference and a dude from Thronton is going to understand a guy from Thornridge much better than some guy from Maine West

    Dear Gov. Quinn–

    How did you blow the opportunity of the decade to set the state’s budget straight? The massive sense of relief that Blago was gone was not used to motivate state government in a positive direction. Instead, we got the same budget tricks and pension bamboozles, kicking the can down the road. Spring 2010 will be a nightmare. Thanks, Pat!!
