A few filing surprises

Monday, Nov 2, 2009

* 3:50 pm - [Surprises are highlighted.] Chicago Alderman Bob Fioretti has filed petitions to run for the 7th Congressional District seat now held by Danny Davis, who may run for county board president.

* Attorney Clint Krislov has filed as a Democrat to run for comptroller. Krislov dropped out of the 1996 US Senate race (which also featured Dick Durbin and Pat Quinn) after reported problems with his petitions.

* We have a new US Senate candidate. Corey Dabney, an African-American Democrat, is apparently waiting to file his petitions. His website is here. The site was purchased on October 8th - less than a month ago. That makes two black Democratic US Senate candidates, although only one, Cheryle Jackson, can be considered a top tier candidate. Ms. Jackson has not yet filed.

* State Sen. Tony Munoz has filed to run against Chicago Ald. Ricardo Munoz for Democratic State Central Committeeman.

* In non-surprise races, Dan Proft filed his petitions for governor, Dan Rutherford filed for state treasurer. Porter McNeil has filed for Rep. Michael Boland’s House seat. Boland has not yet filed for treasurer lieutenant governor, but there’s still time.

More as they come in. You can follow along by clicking here and then clicking on the “Latest filed” link. The idiotic State Board of Elections website doesn’t allow direct linking. Morons.

* 4:04 pm -
Cheryle Jackson and Corey Dabney have now filed.

Democratic political operative Mark Doyle has filed for treasurer.

* 4:22 pm - Jim Ryan just filed for governor.

* 4:34 pm - You can watch the Cook County filings at this link. As of this writing, Todd Stroger has not yet filed for reelection.

Andy McKenna and his running mate Matt Murphy have filed.

* 4:54 pm - Once again, we have to wait while Cook County updates its site. The county clerk hasn’t updated since 4:19 pm. Sheesh.

* 5:00 pm -
Rep. Boland has filed for LG. If you’re keeping track, seven Dems have filed for LG so far, and six Republicans have also filed. Still no updates from David Orr’s site.

* 5:03 pm - From Scott Cisek’s Twitter page

5 mins to deadline and no sign of Todd Stroger, uh, Mr. President, where are you?
10 minutes ago from web

* 5:06 pm - The Green Party will have a gubernatorial primary between 2006 contender Rich Whitney and late filer Richard Mayers of Chicago. However, Mayers also filed for 10th Congress.

* 5:09 pm - ABC7 claims that Todd Stroger filed his petitions last. But there’s no confirmation yet from the county clerk.

* 5:10 pm -
I was finally able to get confirmation from the county clerk’s office that Stroger filed. It would be nice if they’d update their site.

Boland for Treasurer? Did I miss a memo? I thought we was running for LG.

  2. - Rich Miller - Monday, Nov 2, 09 @ 4:55 pm:

Oops. Wrong election year. Fixed. Thanks.

  3. - Will County Woman - Monday, Nov 2, 09 @ 4:56 pm:

Corey Dabney????? I can’t find any info on him and his Web site doesn’t have info under his profile tab.

  4. - Rich Miller - Monday, Nov 2, 09 @ 4:57 pm:

===Web site doesn’t have info under his profile tab. ===

Yes it does. It’s a linked .doc file.

  5. - Will County Woman - Monday, Nov 2, 09 @ 5:00 pm:

How is cheryl jackson considered “top tier”? Her endorsements thus far?

    She polls fair to poorly
She doesn’t have nearly as much money as Alexi G. or [positive] name recognition for that matter.
She hasn’t been invited to the White House to see Axelrod, that I am aware of.

  6. - OneMan - Monday, Nov 2, 09 @ 5:01 pm:

I live a short distance (easy bike ride) from Corey Dabney….

  7. - Rich Miller - Monday, Nov 2, 09 @ 5:01 pm:

    ===Her endorsements thus far? ===

    Emily’s List, for one.

OneMan, ride over and see if he has a yard sign out front - for someone else. lol

  8. - OdysseusVL - Monday, Nov 2, 09 @ 5:03 pm:

    Will County,
I seem to recall that Danny Davis endorsed her. That’s not enough to make her top tier, but is enough to make her more than a footnote.

  9. - OneMan - Monday, Nov 2, 09 @ 5:03 pm:

Will do, he is about a block away from where the other den leader lives….

  10. - OdysseusVL - Monday, Nov 2, 09 @ 5:03 pm:

    She just filed.

  11. - Chicago Cynic - Monday, Nov 2, 09 @ 5:05 pm:

WCW, she’s top tier because she starts with a base. African Americans account for 35-40% of the Democratic vote and she has a credible claim on much of that vote based on historical voting patterns. She also is the only woman in the race. Purely on demographics, she’s top tier.

  12. - Will County Woman - Monday, Nov 2, 09 @ 5:06 pm:

thanks, I saw his profile information. I’ve never known of anyone to have his own university. Wow. that’s pretty impressive. I’m going to withold some serious snark at this time.

  13. - dave - Monday, Nov 2, 09 @ 5:11 pm:

Dabney has one of the worst candidate websites that I have seen in a long time.

  14. - WalterGPW - Monday, Nov 2, 09 @ 5:13 pm:

    Rich-

Actually you can make that THREE African-American US Senate candidates. LeAlan Jones is running as a Green Party candidate. Considering how much coverage and media attention he got as a journalist, then I consider him competitive.

  15. - Will County Woman - Monday, Nov 2, 09 @ 5:16 pm:

three black candidates, but Cheryl is by far the most well known within the black “community” of the three.

Dabney is a spoiler, but for whom? My best guess is that with Cheryle Jackson and Corey Dabney, Hoffman is helped quite a bit.

  16. - well - Monday, Nov 2, 09 @ 5:16 pm:

If you want to get technical, it’s five. Both Eric Wallace and John Arrington are African-American and are running for the Republican US Senate nomination.

  17. - Rich Miller - Monday, Nov 2, 09 @ 5:17 pm:

OK, OK, the post is now updated. Two black Democratic US Senate candidates.

  18. - Obamarama - Monday, Nov 2, 09 @ 5:18 pm:

Make that 4 African Americans–John Arrington.

  19. - Tim - Monday, Nov 2, 09 @ 5:23 pm:

Jim Ryan finally filed a few minutes ago.

  20. - Obamarama - Monday, Nov 2, 09 @ 5:24 pm:

Does this count as a filing surprise:

    HENDRICKS, SYLVESTER “JUNEBUG”
    P.O. BOX 289292
    (HOMELESS) 5TH WD. & 45TH
    CHICAGO, IL 60628-9292

    26TH REPRESENTATIVE
    REPUBLICAN

  21. - Rich Miller - Monday, Nov 2, 09 @ 5:25 pm:

No. He ran last time I think. Same address.

  22. - Will County Woman - Monday, Nov 2, 09 @ 5:34 pm:

    Obamarama, are you serious??????????

So there are 4 black candidates running for the U.S. Senate. Man, Barack Obama was that influential????? Geeze. I just wondered about the Democrat side because that side is not as clear-cut as the republican side.

The reality is that as much as this state loves Barack Obama, the next senator is going to be one of the following:

    Mark Kirk
    David Hoffman
    Alexi G

  23. - Walter Winchell - Monday, Nov 2, 09 @ 5:36 pm:

ABC7 Chicago reports Stroger is filed

  24. - Obamarama - Monday, Nov 2, 09 @ 5:37 pm:

WCW, I have no idea what you are talking about. Can I count? Indeed. Did I make anything other than a numerical observation? Nope.

  25. - Rich Miller - Monday, Nov 2, 09 @ 5:38 pm:

WW, it’s not on their site that I can find and it hasn’t been reported yet by the county clerk.

  26. - The Doc - Monday, Nov 2, 09 @ 5:41 pm:

    Pat Hughes just withdrew.

  27. - Rich Miller - Monday, Nov 2, 09 @ 5:43 pm:

Pat Hughes did NOT withdraw. Read the filing. He withdrew this morning and then refiled this afternoon. Happens quite often.

  28. - Jonathan Goldman - Monday, Nov 2, 09 @ 5:43 pm:

I just filed for 10th District State Rep a few minutes ago - 2,637 signatures. I’m now the 8th candidate in the field.

  29. - OdysseusVL - Monday, Nov 2, 09 @ 5:44 pm:

Ken Dunkin has a second opponent. Gwen Drake just filed. That should be a very interesting race.

  30. - Rich Miller - Monday, Nov 2, 09 @ 5:45 pm:

Not sure about Drake yet. I wrote about her a while ago. We’ll see if she can put it together.

  31. - whatwhat - Monday, Nov 2, 09 @ 5:45 pm:

Someone should wake Mike Boland up if he actually thinks people want him to run Illinois. What a clow this guy has become. Bye-bye Mikey!

  32. - OneMan - Monday, Nov 2, 09 @ 5:46 pm:

    The Doc …

Just called his campaign, at least the woman answering the phone had no idea. Says it’s a mistake.

I do however see it on the website of the state board as a withdraw as well.

  33. - Chicago Cynic - Monday, Nov 2, 09 @ 5:46 pm:

ToddWatch 2010! Where oh where is Todd. I hear he went to David Orr’s office to file by mistake.

  34. - Rich Miller - Monday, Nov 2, 09 @ 5:49 pm:

OneMan, it’s a withdraw from this morning.

  35. - Edison Parker - Monday, Nov 2, 09 @ 5:52 pm:

John Mulroe filed in the 10th Senate which should be interesting because Doherty backed him when he ran for judge last time and backed O’Connor against Capparelli.

  36. - Harlem & Foster - Monday, Nov 2, 09 @ 5:55 pm:

EP …Doherty’s .. uh, um … Mulroe’s filing in the dem primary is not by accident, says the “Nort-Siiiiiide truce”

  37. - Edison Parker - Monday, Nov 2, 09 @ 5:57 pm:

    Harlem,

I’m a little dense. Doherty is running as a Rep and Mulroe as a Dem. I don’t see how Doherty running helps Mulroe or vice versa. Is one planning on dropping out if Mulroe wins the primary?

  38. - Rich Miller - Monday, Nov 2, 09 @ 5:57 pm:

Actually, Mulroe is being backed by some suburban Democrats, including Sen. Kotowski.

  39. - Edison Parker - Monday, Nov 2, 09 @ 5:59 pm:

Rich I don’t doubt that, but Doherty paid for fundraisers when he ran for judge and had his people out getting signatures, passing literature and working election day.

  40. - fedup dem - Monday, Nov 2, 09 @ 6:00 pm:

Orr is an incompetent, and has been a constant screwup throughout his 19 years in the Clerk’s office. That said, every incumbent Democratic Township Committeeman who has an opponent will have to answer for not speaking out against Orr at Democratic Party slating, after years of their griping about his ineptitude.

  41. - Harlem & Foster - Monday, Nov 2, 09 @ 6:02 pm:

The “Nort-Siiiiide truce” has the real candidate choose an “opponent” that they might happen to know, this “opponent” wins the primary, then takes the 8 mos. vacation, and “oh my goodness, the real candidate wins, spends little money, and is safe. Dohert backed Mulroe … You know that “walks like a duck”, thing ….

  42. - fedup dem - Monday, Nov 2, 09 @ 6:02 pm:

I see that Arthur Turner just filed for re-election as 9th district State Rep. Does this mean that he has abandoned his bid to become Lt. Gov.?

  43. - Edison Parker - Monday, Nov 2, 09 @ 6:03 pm:

And Mulroe gets backed for Alderman?

  44. - OneMan - Monday, Nov 2, 09 @ 6:03 pm:

    Rich…

Got it now, it looked a bit strange on the site. Filed and withdrawn at the same minute.

  45. - Anon - Monday, Nov 2, 09 @ 6:04 pm:

Rich, can you put the comments on the site on CST, please? (Sorry if somebody already said this. Please feel free to delete it.)

    Thanks.

  46. - Harlem & Foster - Monday, Nov 2, 09 @ 6:05 pm:

the next 41st Ward alderman will be picked by Daley … no matter what

  47. - Scott Cisek - Monday, Nov 2, 09 @ 6:06 pm:

I understand Todd did file at the last hour: http://abclocal.go.com/wls/story?section=news/politics&id=7096213

  48. - Edison Parker - Monday, Nov 2, 09 @ 6:07 pm:

    Harlem,

Again, not to be dense, given the Chicago motto of “where’s mine” or “what’s in it for me,” what does Mulroe get for spending money in a primary and exerting effort to win the primary, only to lay down in the general?

  49. - umm - Monday, Nov 2, 09 @ 6:09 pm:

So did mckenna murphy file the same peitions or do they have to each file seperate 5k??

  50. - Harlem & Foster - Monday, Nov 2, 09 @ 6:10 pm:

EP … you know that saying “If you go into a room to play poker, and you look for the pigeon in the room and you don’t see one …etc …” If you don’t understand the “Nort-Siiiide truce” or get how it works so everyone is safe …. Rich covers it the best, I am sure it will be revisited again soon …

  51. - Tim - Monday, Nov 2, 09 @ 6:13 pm:

re Richard Mayers: Looks like he filed as a Green for both Governor and the 10th Congressional.

  52. - Rich Miller - Monday, Nov 2, 09 @ 6:15 pm:

fedup dem, that’s Rep. Turner’s son.

  53. - Chicago Cynic - Monday, Nov 2, 09 @ 6:16 pm:

    umm,

Candidates must run separately and they both filed.

  54. - Will County Woman - Monday, Nov 2, 09 @ 6:19 pm:

Obamarama I was asking if you were serious about
    HENDRICKS, SYLVESTER “JUNEBUG”
    P.O. BOX 289292
    (HOMELESS) 5TH WD. & 45TH
    CHICAGO, IL 60628-9292

LoL! “Junebug” filing as a republican no less. LOL!

  55. - Will County Woman - Monday, Nov 2, 09 @ 6:21 pm:

See, that’s a reason right there why NOT to vote for Art Turner or his son. This dynasty stuff has to stop.

  56. - OdysseusVL - Monday, Nov 2, 09 @ 6:23 pm:

    Will County Woman,
He ran against Will Burns last time too.

  57. - Tim - Monday, Nov 2, 09 @ 6:26 pm:

The Cook County Clerk finally updated their site.

  58. - Bill - Monday, Nov 2, 09 @ 6:38 pm:

    C’mon Todd!!! Sheesh

  59. - umm - Monday, Nov 2, 09 @ 6:41 pm:

Thanks chicago cynic I was just confused since they were both on the same petition.

  60. - Will County Woman - Monday, Nov 2, 09 @ 6:55 pm:

Still no Todd Stroger? Isn’t it too late now?

  61. - Will County Woman - Monday, Nov 2, 09 @ 6:58 pm:

never mind I just saw Rich’s update on Todd.

  62. - Levois - Monday, Nov 2, 09 @ 7:24 pm:

Bob Fioretti is ready to bail on the city council already?

  63. - Anon - Monday, Nov 2, 09 @ 7:26 pm:

Corey Dabney’s Website WILL be UPDATED. you have to download his bio into a microsoft word document. Also his speech will be on the website very soon… also on YouTube.

  64. - BigMac - Monday, Nov 2, 09 @ 7:35 pm:

So yeah, Sangamon county hasn’t updated their list since Friday. Nice.

  65. - RMW Stanford - Monday, Nov 2, 09 @ 8:11 pm:

Some one correct me if I am wrong, but isn’t Richard Mayers a white supremacist that tried running for congress once before?

  66. - CircularFiringSquad - Monday, Nov 2, 09 @ 8:15 pm:

Let’s see jimRYAN, TugBoatAnnie and Tugboat Andy
McKenna — Trib says that helps Brady…Proft-a-saurus and then all the Vondra guys from DuPage. This is a blockbuster ticket.

George and Jim “They Just Missed Me” Edgar would be proud of the legacy. Edgar will be back as soon he collects the Breder’s Cup Moolah at YouBet.

  67. - Ben S. - Monday, Nov 2, 09 @ 9:12 pm:

RMW Stanford, you’re right about Mayers–he ran in the Green primary in the 3rd Congressional District in 2008. More from Carl here: http://provisoprobe.blogspot.com/2007/11/richard-mayers-running-in-green-primary.html

  68. - krome - Monday, Nov 2, 09 @ 9:12 pm:

If it is the same Mayers, he filed objections in 2007 (for 2008) against Obama and Keyes - asserting that blacks were disqualified from running for President.

  69. - DuPage Dave - Monday, Nov 2, 09 @ 9:20 pm:

    A short Krislov-related anecdote:

In 1996 I’m walking down Randolph street when someone says “Meet Dick Durbin, candidate for Senate”, so I get in a short line and move up to shake Durbin’s hand.

While I’m shaking his hand, I ask him “Why did you spend so much time and money kicking that other fellow off the ballot?” Durbin won’t look me in the eye and won’t answer the question. He’s still shaking my hand when one of his handlers grabs my arm and says “OK, move on”.

All I could remember is that the fellow’s name started with a K and he was a mostly self-financed candidate. It bugs me to this day that Durbin would not or could not give a registered voter a face-to-face answer as to why it’s a good thing to kick another candidate off the ballot.

It is an effective technique in getting elected (ask State Senator Obama) but it is inherently anti-democratic and gives a bad odor to the whole enterprise.

As a moderately-left-of-center Democrat I agree with Durbin on just about everything of importance. But I’ll never vote for the guy. He had his chance to speak to me as a human being and chickened out.

  70. - Yellow Dog Democrat - Monday, Nov 2, 09 @ 10:02 pm:

I hope Stroger isn’t pulling the old “Add Petitions After You’ve Filed” trick.

  71. - Bobs yer - Monday, Nov 2, 09 @ 11:07 pm:

Thank God the Toddster made it. Think about how boring the primary (and this web site) would have been without him.

  72. - Pot calling kettle - Tuesday, Nov 3, 09 @ 12:15 am:

==(kicking someone off the ballot) is inherently anti-democratic and gives a bad odor to the whole enterprise.==

The petition process is intended to ensure that those who are on the ballot have taken the time to get a certain percentage of the electorate to agree that they should be on the ballot. I cannot imagine why the petitions should not be examined to make sure they are legitimate and challenged if they are not. If there is no opportunity to challenge, you could just have anyone who submits their name put on the ballot.

A better argument could be made regarding the number of signatures required. (way too high for indys and 3rd parties)

  73. - Lynn S - Tuesday, Nov 3, 09 @ 1:09 am:

    - Obamarama - Monday, Nov 2, 09 @ 5:24 pm:

Does this count as a filing surprise:

    HENDRICKS, SYLVESTER “JUNEBUG”
    P.O. BOX 289292

And if this gentleman wins, he will be able to camp out in his office, AND rent a small apartment in his district. It will be an incredibly creative way to be one less homeless person!

I may just have to send a donation to his campaign!

  74. - distant observer - Tuesday, Nov 3, 09 @ 1:34 am:

So I guess the stories of Boland running for re-elections were plants? Someone is his district told me they never saw any petitions for him for anything other than LG?

Is this part of some slam by Rich on Boland? Especially in light of him running for ” Treasurer” which forgive me if im wrong I never heard of this cycle??

  75. - LouisXIV - Tuesday, Nov 3, 09 @ 6:32 am:

Love to see Ken Dunkin be defeated but if Drake couldn’t file on the first day for a state rep. race, that is not a good sign.

  76. - Mad as Hell - Tuesday, Nov 3, 09 @ 10:27 am:

Not sure of all of her support, but my precinct captain in the 42nd Ward was circulating her petitions. He told me the organization is backing her.

  77. - Mad as Hell - Tuesday, Nov 3, 09 @ 10:28 am:

Oops, when I said “her” above, I meant Gwen Drake.

  78. - JoJo - Tuesday, Nov 3, 09 @ 10:44 am:

Mike Boland has wanted to throw his hat into so many rings the last few years that no one in his district ever knew what his intentions were from election to election. Word up here in RI County was that he wanted someone running for the representative job that he could control. Then word was he was running for rep again after all. You just never know with Boland!

  79. - Will County Woman - Tuesday, Nov 3, 09 @ 10:49 am:

Steve Kim (R) filed for Attorney General yesterday and the Robert Enriquez (R)candidate for Secretary of State filed last week.

I’m not thinking that either will win, but it is nice to know and see that the Republicans are trying to offer up something different.

  80. - SangoDem - Tuesday, Nov 3, 09 @ 11:07 am:

Ditto that everyone I asked in Rock Island county never saw Boland circulating petitions for State Rep. Boland has said for months he wouldn’t run for re-election no matter what happened with the LG race.

Rich, what article did Boland’s two-petitions statement appear in? You’re not talking about the Dispatch-Argus that has a long hostility to him, are you? The two petitions rumor was spread right before the Madison County endorsement meeting. Well timed. The false charges impacted the race. Maybe you got used, Rich.

  81. - Rich Miller - Tuesday, Nov 3, 09 @ 11:14 am:

===Someone is his district told me they never saw any petitions for him for anything other than LG? ===

That “someone” lied to you. Or Boland lied when he told his local paper that he was circulating for both offices.

  82. - OdysseusVL - Tuesday, Nov 3, 09 @ 1:46 pm:

“Not sure of all of her support, but my precinct captain in the 42nd Ward was circulating her petitions. He told me the organization is backing her.”

My understanding is that there has been no decision as to whether to back any candidate in that race. Dave Schroeder and Gwen Drake both are interesting candidates, and both would be a major improvement over Ken Dunkin. Of the two, Schroeder seems to be the one running the stronger race so far (he filed the first day with over 2000 signatures) so we will see how this shakes out.
