Sparks are really gonna fly, campers

Thursday, Jan 28, 2010 - Posted by Rich Miller

* Oh, this ought to be good

Gov. Pat Quinn and his Democratic primary opponent Dan Hynes are taking their contentious campaign to the radio.

Quinn and Hynes are scheduled to debate Thursday on Chicago’s WVON-AM. The two will square off on the Cliff Kelley show.

Kelley talked about Hynes’ Harold Washington ad to Crain’s last week

“It’s sort of ironic for Hynes to bring it up,” WVON-AM talk-show host Cliff Kelley told me in a phone chat. “If it were up to Hynes and his father” (Tom Hynes, who left the Democratic Party to run as an independent against Mr. Washington in 1987) “Harold never would have been mayor.”

US Sen. Roland Burris has also weighed in, by the way…

U.S. Sen. Roland Burris, the first black man ever elected statewide, on Wednesday called a recent campaign ad invoking deceased Chicago Mayor Harold Washington “an abomination.” […]

“I thought it was an abomination that Dan Hynes would do that,” Burris said. “But be that as it may, it’s called politics and all is fair in love and war. But it hit the community. Especially the African American community has really let him know that it was not in good taste.”

As I told you yesterday, the two campaigns are now fighting over Hynes’ use of President Obama in a mailer on middle class tax hikes.

We’ll have to live-blog that show later today. The festivities begin at 4 o’clock. WVON’s Internet live stream is often easily overwhelmed on days like this, so you greater Chicagoland area folks need to get your radios tuned in advance.

* On a semi-related note, here’s our quote of the day

“Remember the typewriter?” asked State Rep. LaShawn Ford (D-Chicago) during a gathering of lawmakers for Hynes in Chicago. “The typewriter was kind of slow and antiquated. So we got to the computer and Dan [Hynes] is our computer. We got somebody that’s a typewriter right now.”

Please Roland, stay off our side.

“U.S. Sen. Roland Burris, the first black man ever elected statewide”
Wouldn’t him being “elected” require people to actually cast votes for him? I think a more appropriate term would be appointed…

  3. - Burrito Bandit - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 10:55 am:

Why don’t we live blog it? You can listen online at their webpage.

  4. - Michelle Flaherty - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 10:58 am:

Matt, Roland was elected state comptroller in the 1970s. Then AG.
Perhaps you should read the story.

Need a liveblog of the debate. If millions can live blog the new iPad yesterday, hundreds could so so here.

Special page with auto-update every 15 seconds or so is the standard (and helps manage the bandwidth).

Oops… Duh. Sorry I’m young and haven’t lived in IL for a long time. I knew that, but immediately thought of the senate since that’s my primary association with him.

Roland Burris, public arbiter of taste. Put that on your mausoleum.

Meanwhile you missed and KirkyD slobbering all over each other. It was almost like the good old days at Doc Adams Pancake Barn expect the MSI guys weren’t there to pick up the check.

Good move on the Cliff Kelly show….the ‘VON website crashes if there are more than three on at a time…BTW the station is hard to get in most of Chicago

Roland sat next to dodd last night in the sotu, front and center. pretty good.

  10. - Knome Sane - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 11:32 am:

So, let me get this straight…Cliff Kelley, a convicted felon, and Roland Burris have criticized Hynes for the HW ad. As my Dad used to say: “with friends like these, who needs enemies?”

  11. - Will County Woman - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 11:38 am:

I don’t think are gonna fly. assuming that Cliff Kelly is a fair reasonable and professional talk show host, which i am sure he is, I don’t think sparks even need to fly.

in fact, I welcome this because Cliff Kelley was an alderman during Council Wars. Maybe he will ask Pat Quinn about his being in bed with Ald. Burke over the years and at present, while claiming to being so upset about something Tom Hynes did years ago. Quinn has taken a quarter of a million from Burke in the last week alone. Wow! i’m pretty sure Kelly has fond memories of Ald. Burke back then. If kelly doesn’t bring this up, hynes most certainly should. it’s totally fair game, and will help us to better gauge the sincerity of Quinn’s position.

also, i think hynes can really advance himself here…
hynes can make a real interesting case here seeing that he made fun of himself in response to his loss to obama for the u.s. senate dem primary in 2004. not only did he graciously concede defeat he acknowledged in effect that his being white and irish and a chicago democrat would have once upon a time guaranteed him a victory, but the obama factor was way too powerful of a force to overcome. so the white, irish chicago democrat quickly decided to man up, accept defeat and support obama in anyway that he could.
of course dan hynes loves his father, but he is not his father as the 2004 u.s. sen dem primary race showed.

what did obama observe and say about hynes on that note?

“My most formidable opponent in the Democratic primary for U.S. Senate was Illinios state Comptroller Dan Hynes, a fine man and able public servant.”—Barack obama on Dan Hynes

And Hynes should even refer people to Obama’s book so that can see and read it for themselves. Then come right back to what washington said about Quinn and how he was just providing it so that people could see for themselves, which should not have bothered Quinn. Hynes cn also use his airtime to discuss his role in obama’s presidential campaign and highlight that he was one of the select few illinois government officials asked/invited to speak at the Dem national convention in support of obama, then-governor blago was not even asked/invited to speak.

Hynes can also remind listeners that just as Congressman Jackson asked not to be judged according to his controversial father, but rather on his own merits so too should he be judged. Likewise when cong. bobby rush asked that people not judge roland burris according to blago and political misfortunes.

i think this can be a golden opportunity for hynes to support his decision to use the Washington tape against Quinn.

if Quinn had accomplished as a governor, then Washington’s words would have no relevance today, would they? and the words certainly would be of no bother to quinn. it simply appears that quinn is just upset because he’s coming off a bad year in which he got very little done as a result of his poor leadership, and knows full well that Washington’s assessment of him was true in 1987 and today.

sure the Washington tape makes Quinn look bad, but whose fault is that?

    Quinn’s.

Even more telling than the 1/4 million from Burke is the $100,000 from Emil Jones. Happy days are here again, eh, Pat?

  13. - Patriot - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 12:14 pm:

Shore- re burris next to dodd

I caught that too. Did u notice how Burris refused to stand with his party, much less clap at talking points. I found it curious. He must be aware that he makes lame ducks appear like swans. Him and dodd together as two outcasts is classic. The funniest part is that I think Dodd was trying to get Roland to stand a couple times but Roland clearly wasn’t having any of it. He must have waited overnight to get in those seats. 14% approval rating is awesomely impressive.

  14. - Burrito Bandit - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 12:39 pm:

    @ Bill

    - Happy days are here again, eh, Pat? -

You ever notice how the same unions and big contributors that ponied up for Hynes are the same cast of characters that ponied up for Tom Hynes against Harold Washington??? Happy Days are here indeed.

  15. - Rich Miller - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 12:44 pm:

===same cast of characters that ponied up for Tom Hynes against Harold Washington?===

That’s more than a little bit of a stretch.

Illinois Laborers, IEA, IFT, Fred Eychaner, Thomas Klutznick (a Washington contributor), etc. DHynes’ biggest contributors can be found with a 10 second search at the board of elections. Take a breath.

  16. - Burrito Bandit - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 12:56 pm:

    @ Rich

You and I can agree to disagree. The support from IUOE, IBEW, the carpenters, plumbers, laborers and pipe fitters isn’t chump change.

  17. - Michelle Flaherty - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 12:59 pm:

    Burrito,
You can agree to disagree all you want but in the end you learn it’s Rich’s blog. Trust me.

  18. - Rich Miller - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 1:00 pm:

I love disagreement. What I don’t love is an attempt to gin up something that doesn’t exist.

  19. - Bill - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 1:05 pm:

The only thing they can come up with to slam Danny with is 25 year old stuff about his old man. We can all see how well that is working.

  20. - Anon - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 1:32 pm:

contrary to the discussion to this point, i think that today’s forum with Kelly gives Quinn an opportunity to make up for his inability to be gracious in any way to dan at the wttw debate. if i were pat, i would do everything i could to be gracious to the host, downplay the negative campaigning (particularly in the AA community), and tell the listeners why he is the candidate that will better represent the african american community.

for starters, i would point out that pat’s introduced budget provided tax credits for middle and low income workers, yet it fully funded social service programs and education. i would also point out that dan’s tax plan will require a constitutional amendment, and therefore is unlikely to become a reality. pat needs to stress that he took office at the toughest time in the state’s history and that he took a big political risk by introducing a tax increase at that time. however, he proposed the tax because the state has a moral obligation to the social service providers, as well as a moral obligation to provide quality health care and education to the state’s poorest children.

Stay above the fray, Pat. Dont let Dan get under your skin. Be gracious and DO NOT be petty.

  21. - VanillaMan - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 2:26 pm:

    What is the thought here?

Since the Comptroller’s father didn’t support Harold Washington’s mayoral race 24 years ago, Dan Hynes is not allowed to use the Mayor comments about what a lousy job Pat Quinn did?

Who thinks like that? What drugs did they abuse to get there?
