“Facebook battle” and other social media reports

Monday, Apr 12, 2010

* A political battle, of sorts, is starting to break out on Facebook. It’s providing us a nice preview of the upcoming assessor’s race between Joe Berrios and Forrest Claypool.

Scott Cisek, who ran Toni Preckwinkle’s campaign and is now political director of the Cook County Democratic Party under chairman Berrios (who is being challenged by independent candidate Claypool for assessor) got the ball rolling

Cook County Democrats, remember what Benjamin Franklin once said, “We must all hang together, or assuredly we shall all hang separately.”

A FB friend of Cisek’s then posted this…

Toni Preckwinkle winning is wonderful. Joe Berrios is all around bad for the people. Simple as that.

Cisek responded…

I remember hearing the same thing about Glenn Poshard. It seems to me breaking with the party to back George Ryan didn’t serve the Democratic voters - or the state - very well. History repeats and Franklin was right.

Claypool’s campaign manager Tom Bowen jumped into the fray…

Hey Scott, suggesting that Democrats will be disappointed by a vote for Forrest over Berrios is a little confusing to me, especially after you trotted out a comparison to George Ryan - Glenn Poshard, so how about a clarification. What issue differences are there between them that you think will be bad for Democrats? And, since you mentioned Ryan, please comment on whether you think Forrest will be more corrupt or dishonest somehow than Berrios will.

The two then got into it…

Scott Cisek: Tom, you should know me better. Do you think I am going to jump at bait from you?

Thomas C. Bowen: You’re voting for him man, if you can’t explain it in public, I’m not sure how much confidence you’re going to inspire.

Scott Cisek: I am sure you are aware there will be a lively debate in public. My Facebook wall hardly qualifies as “public”.

It qualifies now, Scott.

* In other social media politics, the Quinn campaign has started a “Pets for Pat” FB page

Calling all political hounds here! This is the place to share stories and pictures with pets so we can rally for Pat Quinn and other candidates who share our love for our pets and animal welfare.

Paws Up for Pat Quinn!

The page was apparently started after reports surfaced that Quinn’s GOP opponent had sponsored a bill to re-legalize the mass euthanasia of dogs and cats.

* Congressman Mark Kirk recently posted a FB video of an MSNBC report slamming Alexi Giannoulias. And Giannouolias posted a FB video of Sen. Dick Durbin whacking Mark Kirk.

* The Illinois Senate Democrats’ new Facebook page shows they have over 600 friends, but they’re not getting much of a response yet. For instance, nobody responded to this recent post…

Any thoughts on Pres Cullerton’s response to the Trib’s editorial accusing us of a “delay and deny” strategy?

* Republican treasurer candidate state Sen. Dan Rutherford reveals that he has a nickname for his car

early morning jog & now on road with Pongee (my Pontiac G6) & Josh the Road Warrior. Late arrival in Spfld for Senate Session Tuesday after Canton meet & greet, Macomb lunch with Rep. Rich Myers, then Quincy meet & greet and media.

* Believe it or not, some people are still leaving complimentary comments on Scott Lee Cohen’s Facebook page

Paul Christofersen You go, Scott!

Terrisa Lashmett Best of luck in all you do!

David Ingram U R A good man!

* Tribster Tracy Swartz FBs about being featured in a story about reporters and social media. The article is here.

* Have you seen anything I missed?

Yeah Rich, You missed the video posted on Pets for Pat that blasts Bill Brady on gas chambers.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GZPHzXU199M

How come nobody has seen this yet?

  2. - Pre - Monday, Apr 12, 10 @ 3:19 pm:

    FYI - Fans on Facebook:

    Kirk: 10,180
    Giannoulias: 8,050

    Quinn: 9,155
    Brady: 3,127

    Blagojevich has 3,700 fans.

There are also 525,330 fans of Bacon.

  3. - Carl Nyberg - Monday, Apr 12, 10 @ 3:19 pm:

Have you noticed Mark Kirk posts about Iran more than anything else on his Facebook page?

Kirk thought the Iraq War was so great, he can’t wait to reprise his role as a bamboozler to make the case for bombing Iran.

That ought to improve the lives of people in Illinois. If one unnecessary war is good, two must be better, right?

  4. - jonbtuba - Monday, Apr 12, 10 @ 3:26 pm:

Mass euthanasia of dogs and cats is mortifying. The animals are tortured and sometimes even survive the procedure. Spaying and neutering have proved a far more effective means of animal population control. Brady’s sponsorship of the bill is absurd, unjustified, and sickening. It appears that voting against the man will not only help my economy, but will probably save my dog as well.

The Youtube video is also quite good in demonstrating how awful Brady’s proposal is.

  5. - Carl Nyberg - Monday, Apr 12, 10 @ 3:27 pm:

BTW, the Facebook group for Illinois voters opposed to electing Mark Kirk is up to 235 members.

  6. - OneMan - Monday, Apr 12, 10 @ 3:30 pm:

== Spaying and neutering have proved a far more effective means of animal population control. ==

So jonbtuba you willing to pay more taxes to have nothing but no kill in this state? Perhaps you should have done something with Rod started taking the Pet Friendly plate money and put it in the general fund…

  7. - Small Town Liberal - Monday, Apr 12, 10 @ 3:31 pm:

Great video slamming Bill Brady for supporting the mass killing of pets in gas chambers. Brady’s poll numbers have been high because people don’t know him yet. More videos like this and I think people are going to know him well enough to change their minds.

  8. - cflly - Monday, Apr 12, 10 @ 3:34 pm:

The Pets Gassing video is a masterpiece. Brady really better hope Olberman or Jon Stewart don’t get wind of that piece.

  9. - Pre - Monday, Apr 12, 10 @ 3:38 pm:

—BTW, the Facebook group for Illinois voters opposed to electing Mark Kirk is up to 235 members.—

That is a shameless plug for a site you created. But I love this post from a fan:

“If you want to elect a candidate that CAN win: You need to support Robert L. Zadek, he is the only Independent or 3rd party candidate with the experience and has the available resources to run and win! So vote smart, vote for Robert!”

Might want to work on that fan base. Your no Bacon.

  10. - shore - Monday, Apr 12, 10 @ 3:39 pm:

Carl, he posts about Iran because he is the top Iran watcher in Congress and because it is a big issue for those of us who care about Israel. He also represents a heavily jewish district which is clearly concerned. It’s called representing your constituents and demonstrating that you are a statesman and grown up who is prepared for the senate. Not to be confused with having daddy durbin letting you play stowaway on a taxpayer funded junket to greece so you can beef up on all those major diplomatic issues confronting the 2 nations.

It’s another reason alexi will get crushed in the fall-because kirk understands the suburbs as well as any republican politician in america right now and knows how to dominate in them.

Such as by appealing to north shore congregation israel and temple jeremiah voters who want their kids to go on birthright without having to worry about an incoming icbm .

  11. - Small Town Liberal - Monday, Apr 12, 10 @ 3:40 pm:

    - So jonbtuba you willing to pay more taxes to have nothing but no kill in this state? -

Thats not what he jonbtuba was saying at all. Doesn’t take a genius to see that he was just pointing out how Brady has no grounds to defend his sponsorship of the bill.

  12. - zatoichi - Monday, Apr 12, 10 @ 3:44 pm:

Glad to see that the candidates understand that all statements on the Internet remain private until someone finds them or you put them on something like Facebook. That should take about 30 minutes and stays ‘public’ forever. Have they learned nothing about the stories on HR departments checking Facebook for info before hiring?

  13. - Tom B. - Monday, Apr 12, 10 @ 3:46 pm:

I am not only one of said fans of bacon, but also a fan of Baconfest Chicago.

Although, I did miss it this year, which is very un-bacon-fan-like of me.

    http://www.facebook.com/baconfest

  14. - Carl Nyberg - Monday, Apr 12, 10 @ 3:51 pm:

Mark Kirk isn’t watching Iran because Iran is a threat.

As Kirk showed with Iraq, he’s too much of a doofus to tell when a country is a threat and when it isn’t.

Kirk is smart enough to count campaign contributions. And the Israel lobby owns Kirk.

Kirk is agitating for a more hardline approach to Iran because that’s what his Israel Lobby campaign contributors want b/c that’s what Israel wants.

But just because Israel wants the United States to bomb Iran doesn’t mean it’s good policy for the United States.

Kirk is advocating for his campaign contributors and Israel, not for the interests of the United States or military personnel deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan.

  15. - Anonymiss - Monday, Apr 12, 10 @ 3:52 pm:

Hmmm. So, if I’m a FB Fan of Dick Durbin, and Dick Durbin is a Fan of Alexi Giannoulias, and Alexi Giannoulias is a Fan of Bacon, then I guess I’m a Fan too? Wow, that only took 3. Oh wait, wrong Bacon.

  16. - ABCBoy - Monday, Apr 12, 10 @ 3:54 pm:

Just out of curiosity, what are the largest 2-3 Illinois political FB fan pages? Outside of Barack Obama, of course….

  17. - ABCBoy - Monday, Apr 12, 10 @ 3:55 pm:

    Strike that….people already covered it.

  18. - Ghost - Monday, Apr 12, 10 @ 4:08 pm:

  19. - jonbtuba - Monday, Apr 12, 10 @ 4:10 pm:

Many thanks to Small Town Liberal for picking up on what I was saying.

I’ll answer OneMan’s point with two comments.
    1. Brady has not defended his sponsorship of the bill. He said he was putting it up for debate and…well, that was it. No justification for why it was good. That he’s attempt to distance himself from the bill (hard to do given all the evidence and articles on this) shows how embarassing a policy advocacy it is.
    2. Generally, animal euthanasia is done by businesses or governments as a form of population control. It’s utterly grotesque. Spaying and neutering achieves the same effect without all the immoral torture. I am not saying this should be used by our tax dollars, and I’m quite confused how Blago plays into this.

Keep this in mind: Brady’s bill would overturn a recent bipartisan law to ban dog euthanasia in the state that took two years just to pass. Seriously, what kind of person would want this practice legalized again?

I was a little disappointed in the baconfest page until I saw the photo of the boobs in bacon. It would have been better if it was cooked bacon but I don’t know how they could have done that.

  21. - Bill - Monday, Apr 12, 10 @ 4:58 pm:

    What’s facebook?

  22. - Joe from Joliet - Monday, Apr 12, 10 @ 5:00 pm:

Since spaying and neutering is obviously not a perfect solution, what to do? Jonbtuba wants to kill the strays one at a time.

  23. - Joe from Joliet - Monday, Apr 12, 10 @ 5:05 pm:

    …immoral torture…

I guess we better stay away from the partial birth abortion issue, eh tuba? Seriously, what kind of person wants that to be legal?

  24. - Ronaldus - Monday, Apr 12, 10 @ 5:09 pm:

Shameless promotion of my guy - Plummer is pushing 6,500 fans. Not bad for Lite guv.

  25. - Amalia - Monday, Apr 12, 10 @ 5:12 pm:

perfect timing for this post and events. last night Comedy Central ran the South Park episode about Facebook. the images of people seeing each other and mouthing what they post is priceless, never mind the Yatze competition to see if the Profile beats the kid. some enterprising person should superimpose
Bowen and Cisek over the kid and the Profile and post that
    video.

  26. - cflly - Monday, Apr 12, 10 @ 5:12 pm:

Uh oh . . . partial birth abortion? I smell a fun game of ‘escalating moral equivalencies!’ coming on.

My dad could beat up all your dads

    And it as soooooooooooooooo interesting
Capt Fax let’s make this a regular feature Especially when the Cards are whiping Houston

  29. - Anonymous - Monday, Apr 12, 10 @ 6:56 pm:

I would say that Cisek was bested and pretty badly too.

With all the problems that Illinois has, who really cares about pet euthanasia issues? Those who do need to get a life and a clue! PQ still has no record of accomplishment as governor to run on so he tries to deflect attention. Okay so he deflected my attention for all of 10 seconds… now, what about the budget mess? What is he doing to get it under control?

Seems to me like he is letting Illinois go to the dogs.

  30. - Pioneer P. - Monday, Apr 12, 10 @ 7:14 pm:

Let’s get one thing straight: Popping off on Facebook and Facebook fights are LAME. If everyone took shots at all the dumb comments on FB, I don’t know that anyone would enjoy it much.

  31. - Chicago Cynic - Monday, Apr 12, 10 @ 9:05 pm:

I feel badly for Scott in one respect. It’s hard to go from the moral highground of working for Toni against the Toddler to having to defend Joe Berrios. Meanwhile Bowen goes from defending Alexi and all his baggage to fighting the good fight against the machine. My head spins at the thought of it.

  32. - anon - Monday, Apr 12, 10 @ 9:34 pm:

We are all in trouble when self promoting campaign managers think anyone cares what they think>

  33. - wordslinger63@gmail.com - Monday, Apr 12, 10 @ 9:53 pm:

It’s weird that someone would think their posts aren’t public. Isn’t that the point?

  34. - Highland, IL - Tuesday, Apr 13, 10 @ 8:57 am:

John Shimkus’ tweets are like Sunday morning paid programming from the church (fill in the blank).

  35. - Fred Unfriendly - Tuesday, Apr 13, 10 @ 11:29 am:

“Believe it or not, some people are still leaving complimentary comments on Scott Lee Cohen’s Facebook page…”

Hey, people drive around with Kerry/Edwards bumperstickers, too.
