Quinn thoroughly thumped on assault weapons ban

Thursday, Nov 29, 2012

* This was as much about gun rights as about legislative rights. Gov. Quinn drastically rewrote a bill to turn it into an assault weapons ban, but the Senate buried him yesterday

An aide says Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn will “vigorously pursue” a ban on assault weapons even though the Senate rebuffed his attempt on Wednesday.

The Senate voted 49-4 Wednesday to override Quinn’s rewritten legislation to prohibit the sale or possession of semi-automatic rifles, high-capacity magazines and .50-caliber guns.

Spokeswoman Brooke Anderson says the Democratic governor will continue seeking a statewide assault-weapons ban to enhance public safety. She would not elaborate on his strategy.

Maybe they can use Squeezy in the new “strategy” to pass an assault weapons bill.

“No” votes were Clayborne, Jackie Collins, Maloney and Silverstein, all Democrats. A whole lot of other liberals voted for the override.

His own party is telling him no. One would think the governor would take the hint.

–This was as much about gun rights as about legislative rights.–

You think it would have been a 49-4 vote on a clean bill, rather than a re-write?

No matter which side one is on, guess you got to take care of the base - even if it means you get your brains kicked out.

Pat, now that you’ve made the obligatory “… governor will continue seeking a statewide assault-weapons ban to enhance public safety. (Spokesperson) would not elaborate on his strategy.”.

Do us all a favor - let it have a quick and merciful death - and forget about it.

Maybe now you can go back and build on all the ’success’ you are having with Squeezy.

No way that Quinn thought he would get away with this rewrite in the GA. Simply a political statement for future purposes.

    Rich,
    Maybe if the headline was:
“QUINN SHOT DOWN ON ASSAULT WEAPONS BAN!”
    or
    “GA MOWS DOWN QUINN”

Indictments, newbie advice, polls, special election, leader election, angry unions… whew! It’s not that this isn’t an interesting post, it’s just that the blog is on fire today. My computer is smoking with all the info. Thanks for doing the usual great job!

This is too easy a target (pun intended) … plus the regulars all know it was about throwing red meat to the Chicago voters.

Rich: Your phrase “nothing to see here…” seems appropriate. I only looked to see how many comments there were…and I am not surprised they are lacking. People are past the point of thinking we can keep guns out of the hands of criminals, so who cares anymore?

Look at the presidential campaign: One person in a town hall debate brought it gun control. Other than that, I heard no mention of gun control in other camp during the entire campaign.

  14. - Frederick Joseph Lombardi - Thursday, Dec 13, 12 @ 12:27 pm:

All one has to do to see the purpose of an assault weapons ban is look at India, Syria, Mexico, or any other communist nation. Evil men want evil things but cannot accomplish these goals without first putting the people into a state of fear of their own right to defense. If you still don’t understand look at Russia in the 1980’s where the holocaust of the white race was happening. Now they are trying to create thee same holocaust against the white race in California.
