* Treasurer Dan Rutherford spoke at his hometown’s Lincoln Day dinner last night

“I’m not announcing tonight. None of you walked in this room and thought I was announcing tonight. You know I can’t do it tonight, but I’m in for the governor’s race for the state of Illinois and that’s for doggone sure,” Rutherford said to thunderous applause.

If it waddles like a duck, and quakes like a duck, it’s a ………….

  2. - Shore - Tuesday, Feb 19, 13 @ 12:31 pm:

“When I ran for treasurer in 2010, I got more votes than Mark Kirk did when he won his United States Senate seat. ”

Says guy who might not get a bronze medal in the primary. Good luck to you sir.

  3. - Newsclown - Tuesday, Feb 19, 13 @ 12:31 pm:

Dan has been running for governor since he took the oath of office for treasurer. This is one of the worst-kept secrets ever.

  4. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Feb 19, 13 @ 12:36 pm:

Can that fit in a Tweet, or do you just post that on “The Facebook” as is?

  5. - Whooped Dee Doo - Tuesday, Feb 19, 13 @ 12:38 pm:

Blow your hair back, spine tingling, GOP drama. I beg for more.

  6. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Feb 19, 13 @ 12:39 pm:

    @FakeRutherfordDan - I think I confused MYSELF

  7. - Formerly Known As... - Tuesday, Feb 19, 13 @ 12:40 pm:

Would have been a bad weekend to announce. The only Illinois politician getting any coverage this weekend or today was JJJ.

Dude even made Leno. When that happens, it’s a pretty good bet nothing much is bumping that story from leading on the 6pm local news.

  8. - OneMan - Tuesday, Feb 19, 13 @ 12:41 pm:

Say what you want, but the dude is everywhere which is not a bad thing…

  9. - Formerly Known As... - Tuesday, Feb 19, 13 @ 12:42 pm:

Besides, everyone knows Pongee is in charge of making the “official” announcement.

    Anything less would be uncivilized.

  10. - Yossarian Lives - Tuesday, Feb 19, 13 @ 12:57 pm:

How is that not an announcement? The race for governor is already getting downright silly, and we’re more than a year and a half away.

  11. - wordslinger - Tuesday, Feb 19, 13 @ 1:00 pm:

There was a curious little item in Bernie’s column over the weekend about the Sangamon County GOP Lincoln Day Dinner.

Bruce Rauner and his wife bought two tables at $1,250 per (hey, big spenders!). Both Sen. Brady and Rep. Schock spent $1,250 for tables.

Rutherford bought half a table for $625.

Not to make a big deal, but why half a table? Certainly, he has nine pals in Springfield.

No mention of the other potential GOP candidates.

  12. - Jeeves the Cat - Tuesday, Feb 19, 13 @ 1:01 pm:

I wonder if he’ll go on Chicago Tonight and say something like “No, I’m not exactly qualified to be Governor, but my top priority on day one will be to go out and hire a guy who is. That’s my promise to the people of Illinois.” and then take out his wallet and wave it in front of the camera.

  13. - Darienite - Tuesday, Feb 19, 13 @ 1:21 pm:

    ==”…Rutherford said to thunderous applause.”
Let’s remember that thunderous applause in Pontiac could also mean the bar reopened.

  14. - 47th Ward - Tuesday, Feb 19, 13 @ 1:47 pm:

===You know I can’t do it tonight, but I’m in for the governor’s race for the state of Illinois…===

I think he forgot to use the word “Lieutenant” in that sentence.

  15. - Esquire - Tuesday, Feb 19, 13 @ 1:53 pm:

Clumsy use of the microphone, Rutherford. If you’re not making an announcement, don’t announce your plans to make an announcement. Sheesh!

  16. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Feb 19, 13 @ 2:43 pm:

    ===Rutherford bought half a table for $625.===

“Just give me the marginal precincts in the primary, will ya? I don’t want to pay full price for the ‘good’ precincts.”

  17. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Feb 19, 13 @ 2:48 pm:

@FakeRutherfordDan - There is still time to vote on my “The Facbook” poll wether or not I should run for governor. #ClickToSupportMyDopiness

  18. - Arthur Andersen - Tuesday, Feb 19, 13 @ 2:56 pm:

    The Facebook says he’s running.
Not in big words, but in no more Dopey pics with Bozo the Clown and bunches of Mr. Treasurer and a bunch of suits around a table looking very serious.

  19. - Just The Way It Is One - Tuesday, Feb 19, 13 @ 2:57 pm:

    Wow–there’s a shocker!

===no more Dopey pics with Bozo the Clown and bunches of Mr. Treasurer and a bunch of suits around a table looking very serious.===

(scratching head) … I wonder … if Dillard, … or Rauner … or even Schock … got some screen caps of “The Facebook” and “The Twitter” pages before the scrubbing …(scratches head again)

  21. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Feb 19, 13 @ 3:17 pm:

@FakeRutherfordDan - Ha. Ha. OW! They are scrubbed clean, and never to be seen again, you dope! #BoyThatBetterBeTrue

  22. - Jeeper - Tuesday, Feb 19, 13 @ 4:05 pm:

Did Blago or Quinn do this? Were THEY “qualified?” Whatever I think of Rutherford (and I’m not sure, yet) he is AT LEAST as qualified as either of them.

  23. - Arthur Andersen - Tuesday, Feb 19, 13 @ 5:01 pm:

scratching head…I’m sure we scrubbed The Facebook and The Twitter clean as a whistle…We’re good now, Chief…….
Capitol Fax? What about Capitol Fax?…scratches head…..

  24. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Feb 19, 13 @ 5:07 pm:

@FakeRutherfordDan - “Like” me today on The Facebook to enter the Raffle to be my LG! Runner-Up gets a ride in Pongee! #Crickets

  25. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Feb 19, 13 @ 5:13 pm:

@FakeRutherfordDan - My non-annoucement, announcement defines how I am going to be as your governor, decisively wishy-washy #ImNotSayinJustSayin

  26. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Feb 19, 13 @ 6:05 pm:

@FakeRutherfordDan - Now that I have non-announced, announced, I can do less of my treasurer job than I ve been doingfor realzz #ILNeedsACampaignerNotATreasurer

  27. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Feb 19, 13 @ 6:12 pm:

@FakeRutherfordDan - As a non-announced, announced candidate, I wil stop the tread mill tweets, and movie tweets, and focus on me instead. #EnoughAboutMeLemmeTellYouAboutMe

@FakeDanRutherford - For the record, Pongee is still the “Treasurer’s” not the “Candidate’s” car. My Travel Vouchers for Pongee are going to be crazy-confusing. #NowPongeeNeedsToTakeAnEthicsTest? #DoesPongeeGoOffPayroll #WhyDoIStillActAsPongeeIsReal? #HopePamZekmanLeavesPongeeAlone! #ComePetitionTimeIsPongeeANotary?
