Oberweis “90 percent” sure he’ll run for US Senate

Wednesday, Oct 9, 2013 - Posted by Rich Miller

* State Sen. Jim Oberweis told Illinois Review he’s leaning heavily toward running for US Senate against Dick Durbin

(T)he state senator (and former statewide candidate) told us he is “90% in” when it comes to actually making the run. He said he would make a final decision about the GOP Primary race as early as next week.

The national Democrats will almost undoubtedly try their best to tee off on Oberweis (who has a habit of engaging his mouth before his political brain) and make him a symbol for the GOP the same way they did with Todd Akin in Missouri (and others) last year.

A disastrous Oberweis campaign is about the only way I could see Judy Baar Topinka losing her reelection bid. In 2010, the Republicans had a pro-choice, pro gay rights, pro gun control moderate (Mark Kirk) at the top of the ballot. It helped the rest of the ticket. I don’t see Oberweis helping all that much except for maybe firing up the base, but the GOP base is always fired up about something.

The GOP continues to give gifts to the Democrats in Illinois. When will they learn ???

  2. - Ahoy! - Wednesday, Oct 9, 13 @ 9:35 am:

If you get Oberweis and Brady at the top of the ticket does it become even more disastrous than 2010 since both are far right? Question, can the Illinois Republicans loose even more House and Senate seats? This could be very dangerous to the party.

The guy’s not scared of losing, you have to give him that much.

Count up the number of Illinois GOP candidates as far to the right as Oberweis who’ve been elected senator or governor in the last 50 years. That didn’t take long, did it?

Puts Dorgan in an awkward position, doesn’t it. He kind of has to throw resource behind Truax in order to prevent Oberweis from tanking the downballot races even though Oberweis is on the SCC.

It just proves … Oberweis is only 10% Sane.

Too bad Oberweis proved he is intolerant to the SSM issue, trying to force by pitchfork and torches the resignation of Pat Brady, but, you see, My Party has sanity, and never let the Slytherin House Republicans, led by the Political Ice Cream, vote Brady out.

We know Jim Oberweis is bad for the Brand of the GOP.

Otherwise, the Political Ice Cream would have worked, and the intolerant Jim Oberweis, and his SSM minions with their torches, and their ptichforks, would have succeeded.

It is the goal of Jim Oberweis to ruin the ILGOP Brand. It is the goal of Jim Oberweis to make us less inclusive, more “pure”, more “intolerant”, and less welcoming.

That is who he is, just ask the pilot of the Black Helicopter WHY he had to hover over Soldier Field.

Jim Oberweis is everything that the Reagan Rule of 80% fights off, battles, and must destroy in image, of this elitiest, tin-ear, opportunist, who just can’t finish a first term, because running for office a 7th time in 12 years, is just too appealing to destroy any hopes for My Party with Political Ice Cream on the Menu, that no one wants to eat.

Not a fan of Durbin, but he has been effective for Illinois. Anyone running against him has a huge uphill climb, but the Repubs HAVE to have a moderate candidate to even be viable.

Here’s to hoping that Oberwise passes this time around and then goes on to primary squishy liberal Mark Kirk in 2016 having to give up his State Senate seat in the process. Then he can retire from politics for good, and those of us in the 25th Senate Dist can get some sort of sane representation down in Springfield.

I was having “adult beverages” recently, and the discussion turned to 2014 politics and Sen. Durbin, and the lack of an opponent, and living where I do, I threw out Oberweis, just to see what reaction I got, but I got a little bit more…

“Harry Reid - Sharron Angle, 2010″

    “What?” I said.

Then began the lession I learned, which is always better over a beverage.

The lesson included in a state with heavy union support for the Democratic incumbent, and the incumbent in Leadership in the US Senate, and forced to wear the “ObamaCare” necktie, and the “too focused on DC” bit, and add to it, the polling indicated Harry Reid was vulenrable.

Sharron Angle, a Conservative Republican, was painted as intolerant, especially to immigrants, and the fact that Angle was very prone to verbal gaffes that were quite cringe-worthy, and had even more trouble walking these statements back…

At any time, if you have seen this movie, let me know …

Nevada Republicans slowly backed away from Angle and her too rigid stances and her inage of being to extreme and not with the main stream Nevadans.

I then started my 2nd beverage, since where we were had no Political Ice Cream…

After all the gaffes, and the retractions, and the backing off from state party leaders, and the commericals and the idea of hanging ObamaCare on Reid, given the demographics and optics of Angle being the messenger, and Angle herself seemingly being out of touch …

The major newspapers all endorsed Reid, citing the “extreme” is not what Nevada needed, and even a few Republicans on Election Eve… backed Reid over the “extreme” Angle.

This person teaching me is not a huge partisan, heck, followed politics at thte rate a majority of us follow Professional Hockey. I asked how this person got the knowledge, and why?

“Easy. I paid attention to the narrative I was hearing for 1 week in Las Vegas, and the overwhelming evidence to the ‘extreme’ Angle made me follow th race, even after I left. I kept an open mind, and the watching the dismantling of Angle, brought upon herself, made me interested.”

    My Point?

People watch car crashes. All kinds of car crashes, and if Oberweis-Durbin sounds like Angle-Reid, I have no idea if My Party can withstand …

Slytherin House Republican Jim Oberweis …just like Nevada, just couldn’t take on Sharron Angle.

    Food for thought…

In all seriousness for a minute, Illinois can do better than Durbin. He is almost as far left as Obie is right. If the GOP were to run a moderate candidate with good name recognition & a proven record to get Dem voters to crossover, it could be successful. JBT could do it. Maybe Rutherford. JBT would be a real serious challenge to Durbin. Putting Obie against Durbin would be like trying to fight Ali with a feather.

JO: Sure, but I’ve lost so many times and I finally got elected to something. Maybe I should just stick my head down and get to work.

Durbin is now just a Ward Politician using the levers of Government to attack his opponents. I have travelled around this state the last couple of years and grassroots people by the Thousands are being audited for the first time in their lives; because they are daring to get involved. 5 elections in 11 years. he finally won when he ran for, what, the lowest ranking office of the bunch? and now he wants to jump way back up to the top again? why does he think the state needs or wants him. US senate, against a popular ranking dem, will bring out big guns, while he is armed with a pea shooter.

reminds me of a conversation w a local (spfld) political operative years ago. he backed the same losing candidate twice. once for states atty, and once for state rep. she was angling for another run at something, and he said, “what she doesnt realize is that the more people get to know her, the less they like her. she just rubs people the wrong way.” that, to me, is oberweis. try being a senator a while O. show you can legislate and play well with others. learn budgeting, state finance, etc. pick a subject area and master it. do something constructive. then, just maybe, you can stake a claim for a higher office.

I agree 100% with your assessment of Durbin. However, your analaysis is way off. If Obie is the GOP nominee, think Alan Keyes. That’s what will happen. A less extreme candidate could make a strong message that Durbin is too extreme for Illinois (and he is). However, how can an extremist like Obie possibly attack Durbin as extreme and be taken seriously ? If Obie wins the GOP nomination, Durbin cleans his clock with over 60% over the vote.

“I don’t know what this board is talking about a poll from a reputable firm JUST came out and Oby does very well. Durbin is just under 50% and Oby 11 points back. Oby wins every where but Cook co.

Brady didn’t have a ground game never has but came witin 5000 votes on election night and ended up losing by less than 35000 votes! Oberwies believes in having one statewide. He came in 2nd on his runs for statewide office he only lost to JBT by 3 points for Gov. Brady barley won Lake and McHenry Oberweis has people there from other runs he has to bring up the vote total in Cook by 10,000 over Brady’s numbers! Is that impossible? As a matter of fact it is very doable in aa gov year election. What is going to bring out the Democrat vote? You are always pushing the ground game Oberweis will have a statewide organization on the day he announces!
Do you see Durbin pushing amnesty? Or going after Oberweis on the subject like you do? Oberweis would love it it will force a huge chunk of his base to stay home (Blacks and Trades) or bring in an independent from the Black community.

(It’s just too bad that the already somewhat hefty prices for all of those very tasty Oberweis Ice Cream items on the Menu at their local shops will probably only go UP now, since he’ll likely have to FUND this long-shot campaign with a good chunk of his own dough, though–DANG)…!

  67. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Oct 9, 13 @ 2:45 pm:

===You are always pushing the ground game Oberweis will have a statewide organization on the day he announces!===

    Are you breaking news?

Are you saying, Jim Oberweis IS running, period?

He couldn’t even win the GOP primary. The primary is not the general election. Durbin will win easily against Obie. If you are really serious about winning against Durbin then look somewhere else for a challenger. I am hoping for a good GOOP candidate I can support. But if its a choice of Durbin or Obie, sorry, I vote for Durbin.

“he only lost to JBT by 3 points for Gov.”

I really am hoping for a good GOOP candidate, but in this context it should have been GOP.

  71. - votecounter - Wednesday, Oct 9, 13 @ 3:06 pm:

No But I know the the GOP grassroots around this state and i know who they will support.

  72. - So. ILL - Wednesday, Oct 9, 13 @ 3:07 pm:

I think an awesome question of the day would be something like “In honor of his campaign for US Senate, what flavor ice cream should be created and sold at Oberweis Ice Cream shops?” I hope snark would be heavily encouraged.

Oberweis is 1 for 6, and won a state Senate seat hand delivered for him.

I know how Oberweis will do too.

I don’t want Jim Oberweis putting his Stain on the ticket or the GOP GA nominess.

    1 for 6…

    Your Point?

Durbin is at 50%, for an Incumbent with no worry about the cash, and Oberweis is a 5 time losing candidate for Congress, Governor, US Senate.

    Oberweis is.

Oberweis is down 11 points today, and Durbin has yet to spend a dime on the Black Helicopters, SSM, Intolerance, and all the “fun stuff” Oberweis Stains My Party with when Jim Puts his foot in his mouth.

    Angle-Reid, Illinois style.

Well, that is why we have elections.

An Oberweis will have the opportunity to ruin the chances for the Slate.

    Oberweis is a Slytherin House Republican;

“Better to be ‘Right’ then win”

Jim loss will be felt all along the ticket.

What statewide race has the “GOP grassroots” elected recently ? You just touted the great accomplishment of Obie only losing by 3 points to JBT in the GOP primary. Is that a win ? Is she Governor ? What about Brady, I seem to recall that this grassroots candidate couldn’t beat Quinn, a dufus. The fact is, the GOP base can’t win anything but a few local elections. Statewide only GOP moderates, with Democratic crossover votes, can carry Illinois. You and your “GOP grassroots” can dream all you like, but candidates like Obie have driven away scores of Illinois voters from the GOP. Keep drinking the Tea Party Koolaid and keep losing elections.

“No But I know the the GOP grassroots around this state and i know who they will support.”

  76. - unbelievable - Wednesday, Oct 9, 13 @ 4:44 pm:

Does Obi have a 2 year term? Or did he draw a 4?

  77. - Norseman - Wednesday, Oct 9, 13 @ 4:51 pm:

    4

  78. - Darienite - Wednesday, Oct 9, 13 @ 4:56 pm:

Downstate would vote for Oberweis, but in the 6-county Chicago area, it would go for Durbin. Yes, even the collar counties. Durbin will pull enough women and Hispanic voters to easily offset the Tea Partiers. Durbin will even carry DuPage (not by a lot, but say 52-48).

  79. - I'm Just Saying - Wednesday, Oct 9, 13 @ 5:08 pm:

Votecounter, May I introduce you to my political opponents, it would make my life so much easier if you would put together their field plan for them…..

You seem to be an expert at this votecounting business :)

  80. - Johnny Justice - Thursday, Oct 10, 13 @ 12:51 am:

Don’t forget Oberweiss was the guy behind the 70 MPH speed limit & that’s real popular
