Question of the day

* Eric Zorn

Brady’s new one-liner — “the more I hear Bruce Rauner speak, the more he sounds like Rod Blagojevich” — isn’t nearly as preposterous as it sounds.

Though Blagojevich’s policy impulses differed from Rauner’s, he, too, ran as a populist outsider whose superior moral judgment and iron will would rout the corrupt power elite in Springfield and spark a rebirth of Illinois, as though our problems are simple and governors are kings.

We’ve seen that movie already. We know how it ends.

Blagojevich was clinically insane. There are gonna be some big fights if Rauner is elected, but at least they will probably be about something that makes some sense. Rod’s GRT fight lasted months beyond all reason, for instance.

* And, yes, there is a very strong populist vein to be mined in this state. Rod had his schtick, Quinn does it, Rauner has also tapped into it.

It’s no coincidence that both Quinn and Rauner insist on staying at cheap hotels. Rauner has his $18 watch, Quinn has his decades old briefcase “Betsy.”

Quinn is more legit, however. He’s a frugal guy who lives a relatively modest private life. Rauner may have some frugal tastes, but his Manhattan condo with a moat around it shows he has an ultra-extravagant, 0.01 percenter side as well. I’m betting he doesn’t fly coach on business trips like Quinn does. Then again, Quinn loves that state plane.

* The Question: How would you compare and contrast Pat Quinn and Bruce Rauner?

  1. - DuPage Rep - Friday, Mar 7, 14 @ 2:35 pm:

    Gadfly to Fly Swatter.

Side note: Mr. Miller, I would be interested to hear your take as well as your bloggers on last nights LG debate.

  2. - 47th Ward - Friday, Mar 7, 14 @ 2:39 pm:

They are both pretty cheesy with their respective schticks, but Rauner is imported Brie while Quinn is good old Velveeta.

  3. - Upon Further Review - Friday, Mar 7, 14 @ 2:42 pm:

Rauner is to New Trier/Walter Payton High School as Quinn is to Fenwick High School.

  4. - Chunga's Revenge - Friday, Mar 7, 14 @ 2:46 pm:

Quinn is Obama Rauner is Putin.

  5. - allknowingmasterofracoondom - Friday, Mar 7, 14 @ 2:48 pm:

The Prince (BR) and the Pauper (PQ)

  6. - Formerly Known As... - Friday, Mar 7, 14 @ 2:51 pm:

Accurate or not, recent history makes me think of comparisons along the lines of

Bruce Rauner likes to spend his money.

Pat Quinn likes to spend your money.

  7. - Filmmaker Professor - Friday, Mar 7, 14 @ 2:56 pm:

Rauner made $53 million THIS YEAR. Quinn will never earn that much in his life. The difference is beyond profound.

  8. - fed up - Friday, Mar 7, 14 @ 2:56 pm:

Rauner will spend %0 million of his money to buy an election
Quinn spent 50 Million of taxpayer money to buy an election.

At least Rauner spent his own money

  9. - an innocent observer - Friday, Mar 7, 14 @ 2:56 pm:

Poor Reformers - Rauner with Term Limits and Pat Quinn reducing the size of the GA

  10. - Louis Howe - Friday, Mar 7, 14 @ 2:57 pm:

Quinn understands public policy but is clueless about executive management. Rauner understands executive management but is clueless about public policy. Both are screw-ups as public servants.

  11. - CommoNooB - Friday, Mar 7, 14 @ 2:57 pm:

Pat Quinn is to Mens Wearhouse as Bruce Rauner is to Brooks Brothers

  12. - Samurai - Friday, Mar 7, 14 @ 2:58 pm:

    Goldblatt’s vs. Nieman Marcus

  13. - Joe Bidenopolous - Friday, Mar 7, 14 @ 3:00 pm:

Quinn is your vegetables to Rauner is your candy.

  14. - train111 - Friday, Mar 7, 14 @ 3:00 pm:

Bruce Rauner is to $18 watches as Pat Quinn is to organized thoughts

  15. - MOON - Friday, Mar 7, 14 @ 3:01 pm:

Rauner is focused…Quinn is a scatter brain

  16. - Interested observer - Friday, Mar 7, 14 @ 3:02 pm:

This is hard because I don’t think we have any idea who Rauner really is or how he would govern. For better or worse, we know who Quinn is.

  17. - Bemused - Friday, Mar 7, 14 @ 3:02 pm:

I think Bruce might buy into the Romney idea that 250K/year is middle class. Pat might have a better grasp of reality.

  18. - Nieva - Friday, Mar 7, 14 @ 3:02 pm:

    Felix and Oscar.

  19. - OneMan - Friday, Mar 7, 14 @ 3:04 pm:

    Spotlight vs Laser.

  20. - Upon Further Review - Friday, Mar 7, 14 @ 3:07 pm:

Rauner is to scripted as Quinn is to extemporaneous public speaking.

  21. - WhoKnew - Friday, Mar 7, 14 @ 3:07 pm:

    Carharts to Soy Beans!

  22. - Hanna - Friday, Mar 7, 14 @ 3:10 pm:

    Fred Flintstone to George Jetson

  23. - anon - Friday, Mar 7, 14 @ 3:13 pm:

quinn walks the walk, Rauner talks the talk

  24. - Oswego Willy - Friday, Mar 7, 14 @ 3:18 pm:

Quinn is to working class, as Rauner is to lacking class.

  25. - Formerly Known As... - Friday, Mar 7, 14 @ 3:19 pm:

Bruce Rauner would get booed off stage by Democrats.

Pat Quinn already has been booed off stage by Democrats (Democrat Day at the 2012 State Fair).

  26. - VanillaMan - Friday, Mar 7, 14 @ 3:19 pm:

Quinn is a career politician. Rauner is a career businessman. Quinn has been a Treasurer and a Lt. Governor with Rod Blagojevich and has been an impotent caretaker governor since his running mate’s impeachment and removal from office. We know Quinn and what he cannot do.

We don’t know Rauner. He has no government experience. He is a multi-millionaire.

  27. - RNUG - Friday, Mar 7, 14 @ 3:19 pm:

Quinn - mostly honest, bumbling to the point of incompetence … except when his political survival instincts kick in.

Rauner - competent but “means justify the ends” ruthless in achieving HIS objectives … if he can’t buy it, he’ll try to run over or through it.

Or to put it in car terms, Quinn is a 63 Plymouth Valiant and Rauner is a Buggati Veyron

  28. - Anonymous - Friday, Mar 7, 14 @ 3:20 pm:

Rauner is a venture capitolist, Quinn ventured to the capitol. Rauner is a 1% Quinn is to poor to pay attention.

  29. - DuPage - Friday, Mar 7, 14 @ 3:25 pm:

Rauner=has $5000 a bottle of wine with dinner.

Quinn=has $5 paper carton of wine but gives it away to homeless people on his way home.

  30. - Anonymous - Friday, Mar 7, 14 @ 3:26 pm:

Rauner speeches seem to come from researching the Wall Street Journal, whereas Quinn’s speeches seem come from researching Dr Seuss

  31. - Formerly Known As... - Friday, Mar 7, 14 @ 3:27 pm:

Bill Brady called Bruce Rauner someone who “sounds like Rod Blagojevich.”

Pat Quinn called Rod Blagojevich someone who has “always been a person who’s honest and one of integrity.”

  32. - Boone's is Back - Friday, Mar 7, 14 @ 3:35 pm:

PQ is to big mac as BR is to beef wellington

  33. - zatoichi - Friday, Mar 7, 14 @ 3:36 pm:

Both have egos strong enough to think that the state needs them to be leaders at a time when the number of strong leaders willing to step into the spotlight is slim.

Both like to promote themselves as being outsiders, when in reality they have been deep insiders for a long time via politics or money.

Both like to claim they will change the system. (What politician does not claim that skill.)

Both try to show off they are one of the people.

Both adjust their ideas when convenient.

Neither one seems like the kind of guy you would spend much time with over a beer and brat in a backyard.

  34. - Walker - Friday, Mar 7, 14 @ 3:39 pm:

Quinn is to infantry soldier as Rauner is to drone pilot.

  35. - Hatless - Friday, Mar 7, 14 @ 3:40 pm:

Quinn is to Slade as Rauner is to Emerson Lake and Palmer.

  36. - John A Logan - Friday, Mar 7, 14 @ 3:44 pm:

Quinn is meat and potatoes. Rauner is Surf and Turf.

  37. - Sunshine - Friday, Mar 7, 14 @ 3:45 pm:

    That’s great OW!!

  38. - Empty Suit - Friday, Mar 7, 14 @ 3:46 pm:

It’s the Chicago Way either way

  39. - Stones - Friday, Mar 7, 14 @ 4:00 pm:

Similar to a 20 year old Carhartt jacket that smells of manure and a brand-spanking new Carhartt just purchased at the mall. They both wear farmer’s clothes but one’s been in the fields and the other hasn’t.
