Noland lone “No” vote on Madigan for DPI chair

Wednesday, Apr 23, 2014 - Posted by Rich Miller

Posted by Barton Lorimor (@bartonlorimor)

* The DSCC re-elected Speaker Madigan chairman of the Democratic Party of Illinois. But it wasn’t without a little drama…

The Chicago Democrat received near unanimous support from the party’s state central committee during a meeting in Springfield on Tuesday. The only committeeman to oppose him was state Sen. Michael Noland of Elgin.

Noland says he “respectfully” voted against Madigan but declined to detail why. He says the two have a difference of opinion and spoke by phone about the issues in recent days.

He says it’s “nothing personal” and he plans to honor his commitment to Madigan to not talk about the disagreement.

* How it went down…

Transcript…

Rep. Al Riley (D-Olympia Fields): “The question is shall Michael J. Madigan be Chairman of the Democratic Party of Illinois? All those in favor state by saying ‘aye.”

Democratic State Central Committee members: “Aye.”

Riley: “All those opposed, nay.”

Sen. Michael Noland (D-Elgin): (delay, soft)

Riley: “The opinion of the chair … I’m sorry?”

* Amanda Vinicky of WUIS/Illinois Public Radio provided us with raw audio of Noland speaking with reporters after the vote…

The Speaker’s response…

Madigan said he’s open to opposition if it advances the progress of the party.

“Whenever I’ve had opposition in the legislature or the state Democratic Party, we’ve usually made converse of those problems because we want to work with the people and we want to move in the right direction,” Madigan said.

Discuss.

“Whenever I’ve had opposition in the legislature or the state Democratic Party, we’ve usually made converse of those problems because those who disagree with me want a career after making this mistake. It’s my hope Sen. Nolan wants to move his career in the right direction.”

    Better(?)

“Sen. Nolan, you’re my State Party ‘brother’, and I respect you. But don’t ever take sides with anyone against the Family again. Ever.”

  3. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Apr 23, 14 @ 7:35 am:

    Sen. Nolan:

“Tell Mike it was only business. I always liked him.”

  4. - 47th Ward - Wednesday, Apr 23, 14 @ 7:43 am:

I think the word is “converts” not converse, as in, we’ll convert Senator Noland to Mr. Noland if he keeps this up.

I think that means you tie his shoelaces together and hang him upside down from a power line.

Rauners wife should make a contribution to noland. Maybe just a couple grand. Dem to dem

Alas, poor Nolan, I knew him well.

  11. - Tommydanger - Wednesday, Apr 23, 14 @ 8:54 am:

    That’s Noland!

  12. - Just Me - Wednesday, Apr 23, 14 @ 8:55 am:

It’s one thing to be a Rep and vote against the Speaker’s rules, it’s another to be a party official and vote against the Chairman.

  13. - Tommydanger - Wednesday, Apr 23, 14 @ 8:55 am:

On second thought, maybe I didn’t know him so well after all.

  14. - Wumpus - Wednesday, Apr 23, 14 @ 9:01 am:

MAdigan probably told him to vote that way. I am a cynic

  15. - Walker - Wednesday, Apr 23, 14 @ 9:03 am:

Others have opposed Madigan on issues, with clear communications, and flourished in the legislature. Evidence-based arguments can change his initial positions. He doesn’t respect those who make a big deal about opposing him, unless they discuss it in advance.

Anyone that needs anything in Elgin is now looking for someone to help them, they don’t have a rep and the Sen just took out any clout he had.
He won’t be taken out quickly, but a slow painful and quite public political death. That is his punishment.

Big Ollie’s Car Audio in Elgin is having a spring-into-summer sale on remote staters.

  18. - Blah - Wednesday, Apr 23, 14 @ 9:15 am:

Why do you assume there will be retribution? If my memory is correct, Elaine Nekritz voted against the House Rules a few years ago, and she wasn’t ousted. She has actually become a “convert” and carried many of Madigan’s issues.

  19. - AFSCME Steward - Wednesday, Apr 23, 14 @ 9:20 am:

Senator Noland, you are instructed to report to the Chairman Madigan Re-education Center, where you will remain until measurable satisfactory progress has been achieved.

  20. - northshore cynic - Wednesday, Apr 23, 14 @ 9:39 am:

Has the Attorney General’s investigation into the political, personal and professional activities of Sen. Noland been announced yet?

  21. - Soccertease - Wednesday, Apr 23, 14 @ 9:50 am:

Was the undisclosed “policy disagreement” between Noland and Madigan term limits?

  22. - Anonymous - Wednesday, Apr 23, 14 @ 10:26 am:

Pay the State employees back-pay owed before the Obama library!

    Noland for Congress begins now

  24. - AFSCME Steward - Wednesday, Apr 23, 14 @ 10:35 am:

The Madiganocratic People’s Republic of Illinois is proud to announce that our great leader, Chairman Madigan has been elected with 99% of the vote in a free and democratic election.

Please rise as we sing our National Anthem

From thy Coffers gently flowing, Madigan, Madigan
O’er thy districts gerrymandered, Madigan, Madigan
Comes an edict in the chamber
Rustling through the rules committee, and its strident tones are these, Madigan Madigan
And its strident tones are these, Madigan, Madigan

  25. - A guy... - Wednesday, Apr 23, 14 @ 10:37 am:

Afscme, That brought a tear to my eye in pride of Mother Illinois. lol

Most politicians play the game, Madigan is just one of the best at it.

  27. - VanillaMan - Wednesday, Apr 23, 14 @ 11:25 am:

The Chairman will be The Chairman until when or if The Chairman no longer wishes to be The Chairman and anyone questioning this is to be silenced or in order to avoid embarrassing The Chairman.

This is Illinois, not some mamby-pamby democracy!

  28. - AFSCME Steward - Wednesday, Apr 23, 14 @ 11:50 am:

    Wumpus

“Most politicians play the game, Madigan is just one of the best at it.”

If Madigan is truely one of the best, he would be leading us to a good place. Is Illinois in a good place ?

  29. - Irish - Wednesday, Apr 23, 14 @ 12:09 pm:

word @ 7:55 am: cracked me up! I am still smiling, Thanks for the mental picture. LOL

  30. - wordslinger - Wednesday, Apr 23, 14 @ 12:27 pm:

Irish, it was such an odd turn of phrase, especially from the precise MJM, that the only way it made sense to me was to cap the “C” so it read:

“Whenever I’ve had opposition in the legislature or the state Democratic Party, we’ve usually made Converse of those problems…”

Must be a Southwest Side thing. Good luck finding someone to get you down…..

  31. - Snucka - Wednesday, Apr 23, 14 @ 1:32 pm:

Uh oh. He just said no to the Speaker.

  32. - Formerly Known As... - Wednesday, Apr 23, 14 @ 3:50 pm:

== If Madigan is truely one of the best, he would be leading us to a good place. ==

    Amen to that.

I once viewed him as the adult in the room, guarding Illinois’ best interests. So much for that.

  33. - Yellow Dog Democrat - Wednesday, Apr 23, 14 @ 4:18 pm:

My post doesn’t make nearly as much sense now that you’ve edited Barton!
