Rate the US Chamber’s new Bob Dold cable ad

Wednesday, May 7, 2014 - Posted by Rich Miller

* As I told you yesterday, the US Chamber is spending $367K on a new cable TV ad touting Republican congressional candidate Bob Dold. The ad was finally posted online this morning

* Politico has more

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce is poised to unveil an onslaught of general-election advertising this week, launching TV spots in nearly a dozen of the most competitive House districts in the 2014 midterm elections.

The heavily funded, Republican-friendly group also has reserved airtime in the Kentucky and Colorado Senate races. The Colorado ads are expected to feature Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, whose PAC has endorsed Republican candidate Cory Gardner.

The Chamber declined to share the cost of the TV campaign but called it a multimillion dollar effort, and it appears to represent the powerful business lobby’s most intensive effort so far to leave a mark on the congressional landscape. […]

All of the ads are positive, Holmes said, “and feature candidates who believe in economic growth and the free enterprise system, who know how to govern and who can win in November.”

    “B-, C+”

It is “canned” so it is what it is. $378K behind it will get his name back in the discussion, and being positive is a really good thing too.

Schneider, Bustos, and Davis are the only seats in serious play, so this assist to Dold will help, but at a “B-, C+” level.

The big question might be; will this play into the North Shore independence streak too?

  2. - Walker - Wednesday, May 7, 14 @ 10:21 am:

Vanilla. Says nothing about Dold, or what he would do about “gridlock” in Washington, except that he ran a small family business.

Will make the local Chamber members feel good about themselves. Maybe that’s the point.

It isn’t very original and doesn’t give me a new reason to vote for him. He was already a congressman and what we have here is a one-termer, running against a one term incumbent. What the Chamber ad is telling me isn’t answering for me the question, “Why should I return to Washington a guy who wasn’t reelected after being in Washington?”

I don’t know how to really hit that question with a winning answer, but it is Bob Dold’s key to winning and returning to Washington.

This ad is about the Chamber, not Dold.

Gentleman’s C, in the purest form of that grade.

The spot is obviously one-size-fits-all and pretty uninspired, but it gets Dold’s smiling face up there, so it’s a plus for him.

Are we to assume from the Chamber’s support that Dold is on board with their immigration position?

  6. - Chicago Cynic - Wednesday, May 7, 14 @ 10:41 am:

C-. Really weak. Funny how they don’t mention that other little bit of his background - “former Republican Congressman”. Somehow I suspect that didn’t poll particularly well and they are hoping people forget that.

  7. - Ghost - Wednesday, May 7, 14 @ 10:43 am:

meh, I forgot it after it ended. I would call it vanilla, but that would be too spicey a label.

  8. - Toure's Latte - Wednesday, May 7, 14 @ 10:57 am:

Less concerned about it now that I’ve seen it. Very bland. C-/D+.

  9. - Responsa - Wednesday, May 7, 14 @ 11:13 am:

Ad’s certainly not great, or wildly inspirational or very compelling. But it’s a pleasant, positive re-introduction of Dold and his pro business, pro job creation cred. That’s really pretty much what it’s meant to do at this point. So B-.

  10. - Hit or Miss - Wednesday, May 7, 14 @ 11:30 am:

I like the positive tone. It gives me a ‘warm’ feeling about the man. However, it presents little in the way of reasons that I would be excited to vote for him. It’s good for name exposure and that is about it.

Another guy who will vote to overturn Obama. Work a 3 days week have a great pension and health care. Good Luck.
The add offers little info about Dold.

On a scale of “meh” to “zzz” I give it a “zoinks that’s bad”.

The only thing this ad is good for is to promote the idea that Dold wants to run for mayor of Chicago. Once a carpetbagger always a carpetbagger.

Schneider ought to fact check it and point out that the Wisconsin bug businesses Dold ran lost money in the couple of years he was at the helm before he went to DC.

I have to imagine given what a horrible biz owner he was that the guy his family brought in to replace him in 2010 actually did better for Rose Pest than Bob ever did.

Would be interesting to verify that.
