Rauner chicken stunt goes social

Friday, Jun 13, 2014 - Posted by Rich Miller

* Not long after Bruce Rauner’s press conference with three live chickens ended yesterday, a new Twitter account appeared…

Several more tweets were added after that. I know who’s behind the account, but my lips - er… beak? - are sealed. He’s a commenter here is all I can say. Hopefully, he won’t end up like #PeoriaMayor.

* Kyle Hillman had a little Facebook fun with yesterday’s goofy presser

* Back to the Twitters…

* Bruce Rauner’s Facebook posting about his plan has so far received 314 “likes” (way more than any of Gov. Quinn’s recent Facebook posts) and dozens of comments, including

* My own small contribution is probably gonna go over more than a few heads…

    Dick Orkin=radio genius.

50 years later the line “Benton Harbor. where have we heard THAT name before?” still resonates.

  4. - Grandson of Man - Friday, Jun 13, 14 @ 9:32 am:

It is silly, like Quinn’s Squeezy the Pension Python.

It’s also very ironic in that Rauner’s been a chicken about releasing a real budget instead of the marginal budget he put out there, one that won’t actually result in that much savings at all.

Rauner is playing a dangerous game. He’s giving Quinn a big opening to attack him. Whether it will work, and whether the Quinn Campaign can make anything of it, is another matter. It’s there, though, and when an opponent is down, like Quinn in the polls, you do things to make sure he or she stays down.

  5. - wordslinger - Friday, Jun 13, 14 @ 9:32 am:

Sorry, One Man. Great minds and all that….

    Channel 44?

  6. - Oswego Willy - Friday, Jun 13, 14 @ 9:32 am:

Well, if Rauner’s Crew wanted attention, they got it.

This idea of the Chickens, seriously, who suggests live chickens, who agrees with that Dope, and then how does Bruce agree to it?

    For - Soccermom -,

The chickens were happy to be there, all they want to do is help the Campaign. They are going to take it one appearance at a time, and the San Diego Chicken willing, they hope it works out all right…

  7. - Walker - Friday, Jun 13, 14 @ 9:34 am:

Well, he’s getting some publicity at least.

The DH handled it well, a small AP piece on 4th page I think, with comments from both sides.

    If Rauner openly announces:

“This was meant to show that we have had big waste in State government, and points to some places we are going to look for savings as Governor.”

“These numbers are meant to show how big the opportunities could be. They aren’t firm. We will know for sure after we get in there and roll our sleeves up.”

They can pull this off as “a start,” and avoid embarrassment.

  9. - Motambe - Friday, Jun 13, 14 @ 9:34 am:

Rauner’s next news conference, criticizing funding for the arts, will feature a chicken playing the piano for seeds.

It gets worse for the rauner campaign! Today Christina svenson is filing suit in federal court on behalf of ‘chicken #2.’ DONT ASK!

  13. - Wally - Friday, Jun 13, 14 @ 9:42 am:

In a month when Rauner is relentlessly pounding away at Quinn on the airwaves, no one will remember 3 live chickens. I could find 50 voters right now, and 49 wouldn’t even be aware he had a press conference yesterday.

  14. - Wally - Friday, Jun 13, 14 @ 9:44 am:

That’s an argument that his gaffe won’t change the race much, which may be true. But it’s not an argument the Rauner campaign wants to be making. It’s not an argument that he was right to hold the presser. It’s not an argument in favor of his budget plan.

  17. - Ahoy! - Friday, Jun 13, 14 @ 9:46 am:

All this after Facebook ad with someone chocking a rubber chicken. The dude has a thing for chickens, I get it.

Rich, Mike Schrimpf called and said: “you’re not helping!”

  19. - Oswego Willy - Friday, Jun 13, 14 @ 9:51 am:

Agreed, - Demoralized - is being way too kind.

The Rauner Crew’s answer to Adult problems is Childish stunts(?)

    Rubber chicken

    Live Chickens

If this is fundamentally changing, I suggest it’s fundamentally regressing…

–I could find 50 voters right now, and 49 wouldn’t even be aware he had a press conference yesterday.–

So what’s the point? Why do anything?

This was the guy’s first big “policy announcement” of the general election. The style and substance were all his.

    What’s that tell you?

  23. - A guy... - Friday, Jun 13, 14 @ 9:59 am:

I purposely watched the Nine O’clock news on WGN, and FOX Chicago, and then 2 and 5 at 10pm. Ch. 7 (ABC) was late because of the NBA Playoffs (Go Spurs!) Not one of them gave more than 20 seconds to this story and all featured the Chicken analogy. It could have gone exactly as he hoped it did. As exercised as folks were here yesterday, you’d have thought the Earth was going to spin the other way. It was just one more event in the “Day of the Life”. Quinn was meeting with African American Ministers promoting more social programs. That ran opposite this news conference on every channel. I think they got what they needed to out of this.

  24. - Soccermom - Friday, Jun 13, 14 @ 10:01 am:

    OW, that was hilarious.

  26. - Rich Miller - Friday, Jun 13, 14 @ 10:02 am:

===. It was just one more event in the “Day of the Life”. ===

I don’t really care that much. Quinn’s Squeezy rollout was covered “straight” as well and commenters still lampoon it to this day. We do what we do, they do what they do.

  27. - Jimbo - Friday, Jun 13, 14 @ 10:07 am:

Tom sure does like ellipses. Is that a song or some free verse poetry you penned? I don’t understand. Are you talking about pro-lifers? Or do you mean life long politicians? Either way, don’t quit your day job just yet. It might turn out like that primary.

  28. - A guy... - Friday, Jun 13, 14 @ 10:09 am:

Amen Mssr. Miller. That’s exactly what goes on with these events over a long campaign season. This race is all about a spectrum of 20% or so in the middle. Everything else is red meat for the folks already in your fold. It’s a crazy way to run a government, but the best system the world has discovered thus far. Oy.

  29. - Oswego Willy - Friday, Jun 13, 14 @ 10:10 am:

    - A Guy … -, I bet Rauner’s Crew was so thrilled it didn’t make the news, they did the Chicken Dance.

    - Dr. Tom -, while you comment is comical, I am guessing it was meant not to be comical. If it’s satire, you are genius!

    - Soccermom -, that movie is pure gold. I’m gonna call it great minds to elevate me…

I think Dr. Tom got the weekend started early last night and is just rolling with it.

Can I nominate Tom Pliura for “best” new commenter of the week?

  32. - Wally - Friday, Jun 13, 14 @ 10:16 am:

I’m not saying the presser was a smart thing, clearly it wasn’t, and it is puzzling why the Rauner crew did it.

Maybe they will rethink these type “events” going forward. Hope they do. However, 95% of the voters are busy, it is summer with a lot of activities going on, the chicken props will be forgotten soon.

Mensa Chairman, it did make the news. Probably exactly the way they planned and wanted it to make the news. It got just about the amount of attention it deserved; 20 seconds. It ran opposite of PQ with Slim doing his thing and promoting more social programs. From a PR standpoint, it was probably a good day. He’s on the hook to provide more substance over time. Let’s hope he does and look forward to it. At the moment it looks like the Rauner team is in charge of both schedules, his and Quinn’s.

  37. - Willie Stark - Friday, Jun 13, 14 @ 10:33 am:

For me, this throws into relief the contrast in mentality between the two campaigns. The Rauner crew has a frat bro/old boys club/private equity style that is doofy enough to find this humorous and effective. The handler that was accompanying Quinnochio around a couple of months ago was straight out of the Brooks Brothers casual weekend catalog with an entitled, pleased as punch smirk to match. Some of them are D.C. types and, as has been made clear in the wake of Cantor’s defeat, there is no need to advance constructive or realistic ideas with the national GOP. It’s anti-everything, government can and should do nothing (other than the military). This nothing, hacked together “plan” is very consistent with that ethos.

The Quinn folks have a cult of personality and Friends of Pat approach to governing and political campaigns. There is no discipline, no rigor and the primary criteria the governor seems to use for making key selections is whether he’s known the person a long time or a snap judgment about their fine character (Jonathan Monken being one great example). It’s been evident in his administration and the campaign apparatus he has assembled. Quinn’s benefited a lot from luck and the hard work of legislative leaders, he had little to do with advancing the signature bills of his time in office, but kids himself that “the people” are with him because he’s “good and true” just like them.

With Rauner and Quinn, the die is cast. They are who they are. So, who wins? Prideful, unempathetic know-nothings or dopey, disorganized sentamentalists?

Why don’t you follow her on FB if you’re so interested in where she is? Today she’s in Watseka. She’s very busy. You may not have heard, she’s bilingual. She’s speaking to a lot of people who’ve never been spoken to. In a race like this (or any race really) everyone matters. There is no communication gap with her and the Hispanic communities, many very large, around the state. That’s where she is.

You came pretty close to defending it. It was a show of their complete lack of understanding of the budget. They would have been better continuing to keep their mouth shut and having some of us keep berating them for not releasing anything rather than releasing the garbage they did yesterday.

  45. - Soccermom - Friday, Jun 13, 14 @ 10:42 am:

Today she’s in Watseka, away from any press or anyone who can show what an awful choice she is. She’s very busy hiding! You may not have heard, she’s bilingual, ‘Slip and Sue’ can NOT speak in two different languages. She’s not speaking to a lot of people, saying not too much, who’ve never been spoken to, and they hopefully will forget her as soon as they meet her. In a race like this (or any race really) everyone matters, so having her out front, is just not an option to win. There is no communication gap with what Rauner wants her to do; be my Jason Plummer. Hide, and don’t fall down, and for goodness sake, do not Sue anyone until November! ‘Slip and Sue’ will hide in many very large cornfields around the state. That’s where she will be hiding.”

@Dr Tom: It’s good to have fun, and to see you on this site.

I hope you’re not arguing that whatever nonsense Rauner puts out, it’s OK by you, because it makes the “lifers and groupies” squirm. Nothing Rauner puts out can be wrong, if it meets that standard?

BTW, your assumptions about the commenters here are probably off. First, they’re pretty well spread across the political spectrum, and generally attack both sides. Second, there is a wide range of backgrounds and experiences. If I, for one, am a “lifer” by any definition, it’s in business and finance — that’s why I know Rauner could do better with numbers than yesterday’s trash.

  65. - Oswego Willy - Friday, Jun 13, 14 @ 11:18 am:

    - Slip & Sue, I luv you -

Even with my extra strength Plummer Meds, “Slip and Sue” Sanguinetti is not qualified to run the 5th largest state in America.

That is not going to rest…

  66. - VanillaMan - Friday, Jun 13, 14 @ 11:20 am:

Rauner should not be allowed to get away from what he did yesterday. He had months. He had staff. He had researchers. He had buckets filled with millions to pay for it all. He has GA connections to the facts. He has speechwriters. He has everything needed to do the job right.

    And he failed.

Whatever derision he should be getting, he should be getting good. There is no good excuse for this gentleman who has been considering running for statewide office for over a decade, to fail so completely.

He need to get burned, or if he is elected, we could be getting more of this. Burn him bad and teach him a lesson.

Bruce - you failed. Now get off you duff and show us you know how to turn failure into success.

  67. - VanillaMan - Friday, Jun 13, 14 @ 11:22 am:

==Sanguinetti is not qualified to run the 5th largest state in America==

So sayeth the oracle! We need a person with Springfield insider experience that knows his way around the backrooms of Springfield. We need people that dug the fiscal hole for the State to run the state.

Willy, we need fresh blood and the GOP needs a facelift. Evelyn is just that, plus she is qualified. Thus sayeth me!

===So sayeth the oracle! We need a person with Springfield insider experience that knows his way around the backrooms of Springfield. We need people that dug the fiscal hole for the State to run the state.===

What does that mean? Bruce Rauner is an insider.

    Being a Raunerbot is hard.

===Willy, we need fresh blood and the GOP needs a facelift.===

So being able to run the 5th largest state by someone who is clueless to government is good? Not a good argument.

===Evelyn is just that, plus she is qualified.===

One term City Councilman, with a piano concert degree, followed with a law degree, which she used to work for Jim Ryan, saw corruption, but didn’t “see” corruption, never reported insider deals, but talks about seeing them and doing nothing about it while cashing a paycheck…

And suing her own town, and her runningmate loves tort reform.

    ===Thus sayeth me!===

I will take your assessment under advisement with out giggling.

  70. - Soccermom - Friday, Jun 13, 14 @ 11:41 am:

And here’s a time-tested piece of advice for the Rauner campaign: Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and to remove all doubt.

  71. - VanillaMan - Friday, Jun 13, 14 @ 11:48 am:

Name a Lt. Governor who made a difference while they were in the Lt. Governor’s office.

Berating a candidate as one unfit for that office is like berating a girl scout because there wasn’t enough mint in the box of Mint Melt-a-way cookies she sold you.

Even Dustin Hoffman’s Rainman would be tired of your rants on her.

  72. - Slip & Sue, I luv you - Friday, Jun 13, 14 @ 11:48 am:

Where does that seeing corruption and not reporting it thread come from? Because it is BS. When she was rolled out she stated that she looked at Springfield as a private citizen and saw the corruption.
In case you have had your head in the sand, two governors and lots of reps and “insiders” have gone to jail. A lot of people know that, and are ready to try something knew.
Please Willy, get away from your computer and snapping pictures of Tom Cross’ bumper sticker, and go to a GOP event (”your party”) and talk to Slip & Sue. You know nothing about her, and because of your hatred toward Rauner seems like you don’t want to. I hear she even takes questions from the press.

===Name a Lt. Governor who made a difference while they were in the Lt. Governor’s office.===

Lt. Governor Quinn, became Governor Quinn

It matters. That is the job. Be ready to run the 5th largest state. ‘Slip and Sue’ can’t. No case has been made she can, and hiding her is just admitting it.

  74. - lake county democrat - Friday, Jun 13, 14 @ 11:52 am:

===Where does that seeing corruption and not reporting it thread come from? Because it is BS. When she was rolled out she stated that she looked at Springfield as a private citizen and saw the corruption.===

    http://articles.chicagotribune.com/2013-10-08/news/chi-rauner-picks-wheaton-city-council-member-as-running-mate-20131008_1_bruce-rauner-running-mate-illinois-state-fair

    Chicago Tribune…

“Sanguinetti was an assistant attorney general handling workplace discrimination and wage issues under former Republican Attorney General Jim Ryan. While in the job, she said, “from a distance, though, I saw the corruption. I saw the insider dealings. I saw the special-interest back-scratching. It shocked me.”

“But Sanguinetti did not say whether she reported any instances of corruption to her bosses or authorities.”

    Ok?

=== You know nothing about her, and because of your hatred toward Rauner seems like you don’t want to. I hear she even takes questions from the press.===

    Except on Immigration… couldn’t even get podium time with a bio of;

===Evelyn’s father legally immigrated to the United States from Ecuador, and her mother entered the country as a Cuban refugee. Her parents were still teenagers when she was born in Miami, Florida, and Evelyn grew up with Spanish as her first language.===

Speaks volumes of her ineptness. Well, it would if she would get face time in front of cameras, lol

  78. - Slip & Sue, I luv you - Friday, Jun 13, 14 @ 12:08 pm:

Nope, not OK with that Tribune quote. Her statement was not in connection with her duties as AG, but was pointed towards Springfield. She worked for Jim Ryan in Chicago or “from afar.”

You just hate Rauner, therefore you hate Evelyn. Just admit it, and move on. We all have opinions.

  79. - Responsa - Friday, Jun 13, 14 @ 12:11 pm:

There is an election in November. OW, with respect, is there any one of either party running for any major office that you like and consider to be worthy? Anyone at all? Please simplify things for your fellow commenters and tell us who to vote for so there is not so much bile masked as “humor” to wade through on threads here.

  80. - Oswego Willy - Friday, Jun 13, 14 @ 12:14 pm:

    - Slip and Sue I luv you -

Let’s be clear; “Slip and Sue” is Jason Plummer with a law degree and Personal Injury lawsuit.

She is not even remotely qualified.

I am sure all the first term council people of mid size towns in Illinois are rooting for her, but she really lacks in thinking she can be the Executive in Illinois government with her background, today.

You thinking she can, says more about Raunerbots than I ever could.

  81. - Oswego Willy - Friday, Jun 13, 14 @ 12:19 pm:

    - Responsa -,

My endorsement is the kiss of death.

It’s Rich’s place, you don’t have to read.

    “Everyone’s a critic”…

  82. - Slip & Sue, I luv you - Friday, Jun 13, 14 @ 12:20 pm:

==she really lacks in thinking she can be the Executive in Illinois government with her background==

WOW, that is why the GOP or “my party” is in so much trouble. Elected official, law professor, former AG, MS fighter, rose from poverty, Hispanic female, etc… doesn’t cut the mustard in your expert opinion. Shame on “my party”.

  83. - Slip & Sue, I luv you - Friday, Jun 13, 14 @ 12:24 pm:

Maybe Willy should really say that Hispanic females, with MS, and from midsize towns NEED NOT APPLY! The GOP doesn’t want anyone with a background like that, because they don’t belong to “my” country club.

  84. - A guy... - Friday, Jun 13, 14 @ 12:24 pm:

There is huge criticism for Rauner “repackaging” clippings and speeches and presenting it yesterday in a policy announcement. No argument here on the criticism. They’re valid thoughts.

OW, you repackage the same hooey everyday, multiple times per day. Hard to imagine anyone but you is nodding or giggling at your “isms”. You attack a lady from a community of 50K people (midsize town- your hero is from much smaller Oswego) You don’t know her at all. She’s a great deal smarter than you. And you’re snide with the whole “sue” theme. Ignoring there was no serious to a situation at all. Comparing her to Jason Plummer is a remarkably stupid comment. You’re for nobody. What exactly to you do when you GOTV, go to the door and hum?

  85. - Oswego Willy - Friday, Jun 13, 14 @ 12:27 pm:

===WOW, that is why the GOP or “my party” is in so much trouble. Elected official, law professor, former AG, MS fighter, rose from poverty, Hispanic female, etc… doesn’t cut the mustard in your expert opinion. Shame on “my party”.===

    Why hide her, lol

    Why?

Former AG, who saw corruption, but didn’t, but did and never reported it, that former AG?

Immigrant family background but can’t get podium time to highlight and help Bruce? I didn’t stop her, lol.

Any first term city council member can run a $30+ Billion budget? Be real, that is not the next step.

“Slip and Sue” is voting on stop sign locations, so of course the next step is trying to straighten out multiple state agencies.

It is real, not pretend. The job is to be governor if need be, she is not a logical choice to take over.

  86. - Oswego Willy - Friday, Jun 13, 14 @ 12:31 pm:

    ===You’re for nobody.===

Comparing her to me, makes all my points.

    Thanks.

“Slip and Sue” Sanguinetti is Jason Plummer with a law degree and a Personal Injury lawsuit. Rauner’s Crew sees it, if you can’t, …

  87. - Slip & Sue, I luv you - Friday, Jun 13, 14 @ 12:34 pm:

Cheap Willy, very cheap. In the words of our host, time to “move on”

  88. - Responsa - Friday, Jun 13, 14 @ 12:36 pm:

    ==It’s Rich’s place, you don’t have to read.==

That’s the point. It is Rich’s place and I don’t think I’m the only one who comes here primarily to learn, to consider Rich’s posts, and also because we want to read a variety of well reasoned, thoughtful-often clever- opinions and comments on those threads.

  89. - Oswego Willy - Friday, Jun 13, 14 @ 12:38 pm:

    - Responsa -,

    Then don’t read my comments.

    You’re welcome.

===In the words of our host===

Hey. This is my blog. If I want OW or anybody else to move on I will say so.

What I’m getting real sick of is you Raunerbots coming on here solely to attack my commenters. It either stops now or you’ll all be banned.

Yep, a mass banning. First of its kind.

Stick to your own opinions or get the —- out.

  91. - Black Ivy - Friday, Jun 13, 14 @ 12:48 pm:

Please do not ban us, Raunerbots, Rich. I, for one, appreciate your criticism of Bruce Rauner as I think ultimately it will make him a stronger candidate. That being said, I do think you’ve gone a bit “over the top” in your assessment of his preliminary budget press release. You believe that it is lacking the specificity that you are yearning for - fine. I am certain Rauner will respond in kind…eventually. Rauner need only stay focused on his broad appeal and messaging. #boldstatementsonstatespendingarelongoverdue

  92. - too obvious - Friday, Jun 13, 14 @ 1:12 pm:

Obvious observation for Quinn to make is that Rauner’s “savings” amount to nothing more than chicken feed. #tooobvious

  93. - Rich Miller - Friday, Jun 13, 14 @ 1:13 pm:

    ===nothing more than chicken feed.===

They do have a problem with quick pivots over there.

  94. - Mason born - Friday, Jun 13, 14 @ 1:14 pm:

As an aside, Sorry Rich, Just came back from some work in Peoria. It was hilarious hearing Ardis, Peoria mayor, and his press conference on how he is the victim and it is the media’s fault. Apparently covering the story without clearly labeling him the victim makes it journalistic malpractice.

  95. - Oswego Willy - Friday, Jun 13, 14 @ 1:28 pm:

That audio, Rich, is a must hear for everyone. I’ve played it twice already…

    === ===nothing more than chicken feed.===

They do have a problem with quick pivots over there.===

I scratch my head often as to the pivot responding by both Crew’s but Quinn’s really is a visible hole.

They wasted time responding, the calmly, actually, responded to look a bit more sane, but turning an image or phrase, at times, lacks a certain irony/comedy mix that resonates.

Rauner’s Crew is weak there too, but Quinn’s Crew is too consumed with the hyperventilating than taking the absurd and pointing it out in that frame.

  96. - Soccermom - Friday, Jun 13, 14 @ 2:15 pm:

Yeah, Rich, this one should have been shooting chickens in a barrel.

  97. - wordslinger - Friday, Jun 13, 14 @ 3:29 pm:

The Quinn camp is definitely not up to general election speed and very confused and unfocused about message.

Is Mr. New York in charge, or are the Brothers Quinn running the show?

Rauner is ripe for a pounding, but they haven’t laid a solid shot to the Testicular Virility yet.

As 47 and others have pointed out many times, it’s not “Billionaire” Bruce Rauner, it’s “Ultimate Pay-to-Play Insider, Medicaid Scamster, Bust-Out the Nursing Homes” Bruce Rauner.

Uncle Warren Buffett is a billionaire. So is Oprah. They didn’t have Stu Levine on the payroll, scam Medicaid or let granny fall down the stairs.

How long will it take them to push hands-on businessman Bruce off his Sgt. Schultz routine when it comes to his business dealing?

If Quinn’s crew lets Rauner get away with his foundation whopper of being a holier-than-thou outsider they will lose and deserve to.

  98. - Amalia - Friday, Jun 13, 14 @ 3:42 pm:

    step it up, Vallas.
