I think that plays perfect to their members.

  2. - Oswego Willy - Monday, Jul 14, 14 @ 12:43 pm:

    “Solid B”

For Rauner’s Crew sake, they should be glad the the IFT is still “undecided”?

Every union household should get this video.

Every union organizer should be quite motivated to “Take on Rauner like he’s never been taken on before.”

I’m glad it’s all “baloney”. I would think it’s all “baloney” if it weren’t for the primary and all the quotes…

    …other than that…

  3. - Modest proposal - Monday, Jul 14, 14 @ 12:43 pm:

I’m not sure the intention of the video. I’d give it a passing grade if it is meant to drum up union opposition to rauner, but if it is going to a commercial I think it fails miserably. The words that are spoken and the text on the screen do not support eachother.. And they have rauner saying popular things. He uses the phrase union bosses so much, you know it is poll tested, and does well

  4. - 47th Ward - Monday, Jul 14, 14 @ 12:44 pm:

As mad as the public employee unions are with Quinn, it’s worth noting how much worse a Governor Rauner would be. Attempting to diminish pension benefits is bad, abolishing collective bargaining for teachers and public employees would be much, much worse.

    Lather. Rinse. Repeat.

  5. - Rich Miller - Monday, Jul 14, 14 @ 12:45 pm:

===but if it is going to a commercial ===

    It’s a YouTube video. C’mon.

  6. - Makandadawg - Monday, Jul 14, 14 @ 12:47 pm:

He shows passion and offers specifics. No confusion on this issue.

  7. - Not a commercial - Monday, Jul 14, 14 @ 12:51 pm:

This isn’t a commercial, gang. Like Rich said, it’s clearly a YouTube video, directed at their members with whom this stuff resonates.

  8. - Modest proposal - Monday, Jul 14, 14 @ 12:54 pm:

Rich - I don’t think this can be edited into a 30 ad, it only is effective to union members and drums up the base. At this point the people opposed to rauner need something better than the “anti-worker” clips that were just shown to drive up rauners negatives.

I thought it was obvious that a 2 minute YouTube video is not going to go to commercial that I didn’t think I had to explain it being edited down to 30 seconds. I guess I was wrong.

  9. - PublicServant - Monday, Jul 14, 14 @ 12:56 pm:

They’re reminding their members, who might be considering punishing the dems for their abandonment re pensions, of exactly what Bruce stands for. The video accomplishes that. It won’t be playing on television any time soon because those issues don’t resonate with the public at large, but, circulated as a link in union mailings, it is an effective A+. As OW says, this will get some “boots on the ground” to inform the public about the things that Rauner won’t talk about, and do resonate with them.

  10. - William j Kelly - Monday, Jul 14, 14 @ 12:59 pm:

Well, I have to admit when it comes to bribing politicians rauner knows what he is taking about!

  11. - William j Kelly - Monday, Jul 14, 14 @ 1:02 pm:

When it comes to funneling money rauner knows a thing or two!

  12. - William j Kelly - Monday, Jul 14, 14 @ 1:07 pm:

“Pay to play politics at its worse,” are you sure this isn’t a spoof commercial to show how rauner is really just the biggest Hippocrate in the history of the world?

  13. - downstate demo - Monday, Jul 14, 14 @ 1:10 pm:

    Might back fire.
Looks like Reagan’s attack on PATCO when put all together like this ad. Maybe too much?

  14. - William j Kelly - Monday, Jul 14, 14 @ 1:20 pm:

Holy shhhhhhh!…. Downstate is right! I thought this was a rauner add! Pull it immediately before you make rauner governor for life!

  15. - Johnny Utah - Monday, Jul 14, 14 @ 1:20 pm:

    Pretty powerful. Some falsehoods.

Right to work does not strip workers of their right to form unions. Just the opposite. It strips unions of the power to conscript all workers as dues-paying members.

  16. - Big Muddy - Monday, Jul 14, 14 @ 1:35 pm:

Plays well to the IFT/union base.
It also plays well for BVC to those not in unions/public sector jobs.

  17. - The Prince - Monday, Jul 14, 14 @ 1:48 pm:

    They’ve already decided.

  18. - A guy... - Monday, Jul 14, 14 @ 1:55 pm:

I’m not sure this doesn’t work for the Rauner message. The people this would resonate to, are already in the bag. Try to look at this from the standpoint of an independent, not a partisan of either side. Better expand the focus group here, this could do more harm than good. I’d give it a Pass grade, but probably not for the reasons they’d like me to.

  19. - Allergic - Monday, Jul 14, 14 @ 1:58 pm:

Ugh. Terrible video and ripe for backfire. Despite the appeal to the base, who are going to vote for Quinn despite the pension morass (and Pat Quinn knows it, right IEA?), this video fails the “I’m going to send this to my mom” test because it only reinforces the lowest common denominator politics that Rauner is playing. The undetermined, largely non-union, crowd will not be swayed because the video doesn’t clarify what’s exactly wrong with Rauner, and why Quinn would be better.

Please don’t throw me in the briar patch!

  20. - Oswego Willy - Monday, Jul 14, 14 @ 2:09 pm:

    Really, lol

    ===- A guy… - Monday, Jul 14, 14 @ 10:31 am:

“There’s no “Labor” candidate in this race.” ===

Is there a Labor candidate or not? At least wait a whole day before contradicting yourself!

  21. - Robo - Monday, Jul 14, 14 @ 2:17 pm:

Is it a Rauner commercial, or not?

  22. - A guy... - Monday, Jul 14, 14 @ 2:18 pm:

    Willie,
The fact there’s no true “Labor” candidate in this race doesn’t mean they won’t side with Quinn despite his repeated heart-breaking letdowns to them.

IFT and IEA are completely in the bag for him. Are you doubting that? Watch the You Tube commercial a few more times. I’m sure you’ll get it eventually. He’s the candidate they are supporting with their noses completely held. To listen to you, you’d think he was the next incarnation of Dick Gebhardt.

Labor is choosing, but they don’t have the choice they’d like. Catch up with your outfit man.

  23. - wordslinger - Monday, Jul 14, 14 @ 2:20 pm:

–Looks like Reagan’s attack on PATCO when put all together like this ad.–

Like much of Reagan’s record, the PATCO strike is an example of when the legend becomes fact, print the legend.

Reagan didn’t “attack” PATCO. In fact, during the 1980 campaign, he supported their demands. Reagan sought and received PATCOs endorsement over Carter.

But the PATCO leadership was incredibly arrogant and stupid. They directly challenged Reagan with an illegal strike seven months into his first year in office.

At the time, Congressional leadership, both Republicans and Democrats, ranged from skeptical to hostile to Reagan’s agenda. The Cold War was way hot. No president could back down from his first direct challenge and expect to have any credibility at the bargaining table with Congress, much less the Soviet gangsters.

Not only that, but PATCO challenged Reagan while he was still recovering from being shot. Reagan’s popularity was sky high. PATCO had no juice at all with the public.

Reagan gave them all a chance to go back to work and address their grievances within existing law. Those that did, kept their jobs. Those that didn’t, were fired and the union was decertified, all within the structures of the law at the time.

Most of PATCOs workplace demands were later instituted by the FAA.

It wasn’t a cowboy moment at all. But it is part of the legend.

  24. - Oswego Willy - Monday, Jul 14, 14 @ 2:24 pm:

    ===Willie,
The fact there’s no true “Labor” candidate in this race doesn’t mean they won’t side with Quinn despite his repeated heart-breaking letdowns to them.===

So no “Labor” candidate? Bruce Rauner is going to get Kanir support? I mean, if Labor has “no candidate” Bruce Rauner will have some Labor support?

Your understanding of your own hypocrisy based on spin is comical.

  25. - walker - Monday, Jul 14, 14 @ 2:25 pm:

A lot of union voters are up for grabs. Many have been Republican or switch voters for years, and the IEA often has officially endorsed that way. These messages might move some votes. It’s just not the case that these folks are in the bag, or already decided.

Interesting messages all on the record from Rauner:

“I’m for workers. I’m against unions.”

“I’m for unions generally. I’m against government unions.”

“I don’t hate government unions. I’m against government union bosses.”

Depends on the audience, I guess.

Maybe we’ll get a clear position “soon.” If he really wants to do what Scott Walker did, then I guess we certainly know his position — but I don’t think he meant those statements either. They were audience-specific also.

  26. - Oswego Willy - Monday, Jul 14, 14 @ 2:26 pm:

“Bruce Rauner is going to get Labor support?”

    Yikes. Apologies.

Bruce may get Kanir support, I don’t know.

  27. - dgd - Monday, Jul 14, 14 @ 2:48 pm:

Yes. In corporate America I vote with my dollar.

  28. - Heresy - Monday, Jul 14, 14 @ 3:02 pm:

I’m not a union member, so it makes me want to vote for Rauner. It seems to me competition in the form of charter schools is a good thing. This must be only for the government and teacher’s unions as the target audience.

  29. - The Prince - Monday, Jul 14, 14 @ 3:17 pm:

Rauner has to be Governor for all students, not just charter school students. If charter schools are so great, why didn’t he send his daughter to one? Fair question. Still cannot figure out what was wrong with New Trier, for that matter.

  30. - Under Further Review - Monday, Jul 14, 14 @ 3:28 pm:

Franklin Delano Roosevelt was opposed to public employee unions too.

  31. - Under Further Review - Monday, Jul 14, 14 @ 3:28 pm:

    Commercial rating: Average and predictable.

  32. - wordslinger - Monday, Jul 14, 14 @ 3:38 pm:

–Franklin Delano Roosevelt was opposed to public employee unions too.–

The fictitious anti-union talking point that never dies. Go ahead, quote the letter — to the public employee union.

He was opposed to strikes by federal public employee unions, not collective bargaining.

  33. - downstate hack - Monday, Jul 14, 14 @ 4:03 pm:

Plays fairly well to union members, but using Rauner’s quotes sometimes makes him appear pretty positive.

  34. - Rharaz - Monday, Jul 14, 14 @ 4:25 pm:

Could a public union effectively bargain collectively if it was against the law for public unions to go on strike?

  35. - wordslinger - Monday, Jul 14, 14 @ 4:48 pm:

–Could a public union effectively bargain collectively if it was against the law for public unions to go on strike?–

It is against the law in most states and at the federal level. Police and fire can’t strike in Illinois.

There are various mechanisms for mediation or arbitration in labor disputes, but the right to strike is not common for public employee unions.

Doesn’t keep some from complaining about them, though.

  36. - Frustrated Voter - Monday, Jul 14, 14 @ 4:57 pm:

I love everything Rauner had to say in the video…he’s right on the money.

  37. - Hit or Miss - Monday, Jul 14, 14 @ 6:28 pm:

For union members there will be a positive response. For the rest of the voters it will be a slight negative for Rauner. It’s a good ad but not a great one because it is negative about Rauner by allowing Rauner to state his position again and again (with some editing help from his union opponents).

  38. - Responsa - Monday, Jul 14, 14 @ 7:25 pm:

This is one of the most fascinating political ads I’ve ever seen. By using his own words, and heavily dependent on the audience who sees it, it will either be viewed as very anti-Rauner or quite pro-Rauner. I wonder how the union’s gonna try to play this so that it’s mainly the supposed anti Rauner voters (whom they want to reinforce) who see it.

The grainy and non-professional footage of Rauner speaking off-the-cuff gives the impression that he is telling it as he sees it, not faking it or embellishing it for TV consumption. Maybe Rauner’s team can pirate a copy of the ad to play at their own rallies.

  39. - Yellow Dog Democrat - Monday, Jul 14, 14 @ 10:27 pm:

This is an effective ad for IFT members.

For the general public, put school teachers up there talking about Bruce Rauner with a look of fear in their eyes.

  40. - Anonymous - Tuesday, Jul 15, 14 @ 7:45 am:

If campaign contributions are “bribes,” as Rauner says, he should be heading to jail already.
