Simon responds to JBT story

Monday, Jul 21, 2014 - Posted by Rich Miller

* Remember the story last Wednesday about Comptroller Judy Baar Topinka talking to Gov. Pat Quinn about her hopes that her son would land a job at SIU? Topinka’s office insists she didn’t ask Quinn to help her son get the job. Quinn’s campaign says the governor didn’t understand what she was talking about.

Well, it took a while, but Sheila Simon’s comptroller campaign has finally responded

“Only someone who has been a politician in Springfield for 30 years would show up at a bill signing to benefit the victims of tornado damage and ask for a job for a family member. The Office of Comptroller cannot be entrusted to a person who treats taxpayer-funded jobs like bargaining chips,” campaign chief Dave Mellet said.

* Simon also ran an ad on Facebook late last week…

Apparently, the Quinn/Simon breakup is now official.

    Sheila, Give up, now.

  2. - Demoralized - Monday, Jul 21, 14 @ 10:30 am:

That outrage over the Topinka/Quinn exchange is laughable. People act like this stuff doesn’t go on in the private sector. Newsflash - it does. People get jobs all the time in the private sector through others asking for them.

    Grow the heck up already.

  3. - truthteller - Monday, Jul 21, 14 @ 10:37 am:

Did Quinn pick Simon because of her accomplishments or her name?

  4. - Toure's Latte - Monday, Jul 21, 14 @ 10:37 am:

    ==Sheila Simon’s comptroller campaign==

She has a campaign? Huh. Who knew…

  5. - Ron Burgundy - Monday, Jul 21, 14 @ 10:39 am:

Good to know Sheila Simon is against the children of prominent Illinois politicians getting ahead based on their family name. Duly noted.

  6. - Oswego Willy - Monday, Jul 21, 14 @ 10:43 am:

The Quick Response Crew of Sheila Simon waits for newspaper clippings to me mailed to them to figure out what happened last week.

@FakeSheilaSimon - Today, I just want to congratulate the Blackhawks on a great season. #WeakResponseWeeksLate

    To the Post,

Sheila is now running against Quinn, and Comptroller Topinka, and the Unions, and …

It’s always ironic when the ungrateful are shocked when those they are ungrateful to move on from them and go with another.

The only thing you are promised now Sheila “Simon” is that your last name is still “Simon”. You have burned the rest of the bridges the name Simon built for you and your pathetic ways of being outside the discussion of rekevancy.

“Dance with the one who brung you.”

I can’t wait till Sheila turns on Lisa Madigan for running for AG, based on not clearing it with Sheila first.

Sheila and her Crew are a mess.

  7. - OneMan - Monday, Jul 21, 14 @ 10:43 am:

Yeah Sheila an argument about the child of someone in statewide politics in Illinois getting a job with a state school, you go with that…

  8. - wordslinger - Monday, Jul 21, 14 @ 10:44 am:

Sheila Simon is a remarkably unlikeable politician.

With no record of accomplishment, she turned on the one person who gave her a big break. And now she thinks she can dirty up JBT?

How can we miss you if you won’t go away?

  9. - Goooner - Monday, Jul 21, 14 @ 10:47 am:

Pointing that the child will get a job due to the parent is probably not, overall, sound electoral strategy for Sheila Simon.

  10. - VanillaMan - Monday, Jul 21, 14 @ 10:49 am:

You can’t claim Topinka is using the Governor without also claiming that the Governor can be used. Is Simon saying that Quinn’s critics of his hiring actions within the State, have merit? Is Sheila claiming that Quinn is the Patronage In Chief?

Not only is she going down in a huge election loss, Simon seems blind to how she is burning all her bridges with talk like this. No one in government wants to deal with someone seeing themselves as a Joan of Arc - even for political purposes.

After you’ve been in a statewide elected office, you can’t still claim to be a virgin.

What we have here is a desperate candidate trying to throw mud on the wall to see if it sticks.

A very small tree just fell in the forest, on an island, in the middle of nowhere, birds can’t even get there….and no one was there to hear it.

    Therefore, it made no noise.

  13. - OneMan - Monday, Jul 21, 14 @ 10:56 am:

Is it me or does she have the vibe of the person who would complain to the RA back in college…

  15. - John A Logan - Monday, Jul 21, 14 @ 11:02 am:

Sheila Simon could not beat Brad Cole, a Republican, for the Mayor’s seat in Carbondale. I think that sums up Sheila’s political chops.

  16. - Wensicia - Monday, Jul 21, 14 @ 11:04 am:

Sheila has found herself in the deep end of the pool and desperately grabs for anything to stay afloat. If you don’t know how to swim to begin with, stay away from the political pool.

  17. - Oswego Willy - Monday, Jul 21, 14 @ 11:07 am:

@FakeSheilaSimon - why is the list of my detractors longer than my supporters? I should win, I have the numbers, I think #LackOfMathLackOfSuppory

  18. - Oswego Willy - Monday, Jul 21, 14 @ 11:09 am:

@FakeSheilaSimon - I’m loyal, I did this in my own, have electoral success, seen as a leader by Dems & Repubs, what’s the problem? #OopsThatsComptrollerTopinkaMyBad

  19. - Oswego Willy - Monday, Jul 21, 14 @ 11:24 am:

“What if…you had a campaign and no know showed up to support it?

Thy name is Sheila. I have that campaign.”

@FakeSheilaSimon - I would have had these political hits up earlier, but my dial-up internet service is slow and the cache was full. #BehindTheTimesBehindInPolls

The very idea that someone could get a job at Southern Illinois University based on family political connection - well I never!

  23. - Oswego Willy - Monday, Jul 21, 14 @ 12:10 pm:

@FakeSheilaSimon - it wasn’t that I wasn’t invited to that event, it was that no one tells me anything anymore. #OutsideLookingIn

Sorry but I’ve never seen a politician lean as much on her father’s name and legacy as sheila and that’s even 14 years after he left office so it’s a little like the pot calling the kettle black. I’ve never voted for JBT and never will, but this is an old warhorse who’s earned this kind of ability and frankly I’m sure Simon’s had dozens of these calls made on her behalf her entire life and made some of her own for friends.

    next.

  26. - PoolGuy - Monday, Jul 21, 14 @ 12:48 pm:

sorry to borrow your handle OW:

@FakeSheilaSimon - meeting with Rauner crew on Friday, promised support if I keep tweeting this stuff

    == Well, it took a while ==

It takes a while to draft a “hit” on this one when you yourself are the child of a big-time politician and used to work at SIU.

“Only someone who has been a politician in Springfield for 30 years would show up at a bill signing to benefit the victims of tornado damage and ask for a job for a family member,” said a Simon spokesman. “When you are second-generation, you know that those requests should be made behind closed doors.”

    - PoolGuy -,

You too your hat, and it’s all good. No worries at all.

  32. - Sbarro McArby's - Monday, Jul 21, 14 @ 4:15 pm:

More and more it looks like JBT might outpoll Lisa Madigan or Jesse White’s margin of victory this time around
