You gotta do what you gotta do

* Reporters use different strategies to get their questions answered at press conferences. TV and radio reporters tend to have big, booming voices that they use to get attention from whoever’s speaking. Others have to try different avenues.

I cracked up yesterday when I listened to the Bruce Rauner press conference. Rauner doesn’t hold too many press conferences in Springfield, so Ray Long of the Tribune wanted to get in a couple of questions. Rauner orchestreated the event to put pressure on the Illinois Supreme Court to hear the appeal of his term limits case as soon as possible. Ray wanted to know if Rauner backed Pat Quinn’s term limits plan in 1994, but tons of other reporters were also asking questions at the same moment. Check out what Ray did…

* Later in the presser, Ray used the same repetitive strategy to try and get an answer out of Rauner about Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s public demand that Rauner release his full tax returns. I told Ray last night that I may make this one into a ringtone…

Heh.

…Adding… The above exchanges reminded one commenter of this Family Guy clip

Laugh. Out. Loud. Nicely done Ray.

  2. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Aug 20, 14 @ 10:31 am:

Sooner or later, Rauner’s handling of the press will backfire, and if it’s later a “Governor Rauner” might find the sledding tough with a combative press following him.

    Ray Long,

Nicely played. If that Crew doesn’t understand the message you are sending, they deserve all they get.

    Funny.

    And effective.

This would not be necessary if Rauner made himself available more frequently or for longer periods of time. If you know you will have a decent chance to get your question answered, you do not have to light yourself on fire to get Rauner’s attention and an answer.

Sometimes apparently absurd behavior is simply a reasonable response to an unreasonable situation.

Would somebody check this guys media credentials? Everybody knows your not allowed to ask a question at a press conference! Lol

    Yeah, Ray!

Rauner was more than 20 minutes late to the press conference, and his underlings even put down little pieces of tape on the floor with the speakers’ names on them so everyone would know where to stand.

  10. - NewWestSuburbanGOP'er - Wednesday, Aug 20, 14 @ 1:12 pm:

Finally, somebody asking questions of Mr. Rauner. But of course, he will never answer them.
