Two years after drawing the ire of downstate voters with his plan to shutter prisons and other state facilities, Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn is now highlighting those closures in a new television ad. […]

State Sen. Gary Forby, D-Benton, said the ad shows Quinn is more worried about garnering support in Chicago than in areas south of Interstate 80 where most of the facility closures took place in 2012 and 2013.

He predicted the governor could see a repeat of his 2010 performance when he won just three downstate counties — Jackson, Alexander and St. Clair.

“I’m glad I’m not running this year,” said Forby, who is not up for re-election until 2016.

“I’m glad I’m not running this year,” said Quinn, who, um, actually is.

@A guy- reading is fundamental…“I’m glad I’m not running this year,” said Forby, who is not up for re-election until 2016.
Although Quinn is a bumbler I think he is aware of his re election bid.

Any Democrat who isn’t running this year is lucky, Mr. Forby.

    Especially you.

  4. - mcb - Wednesday, Sep 3, 14 @ 10:48 am:

Pretty sure “-A guy” was making a joke.

  5. - walker - Wednesday, Sep 3, 14 @ 10:48 am:

You cannot constantly call for cost cutting, and then fairly run against his cost cutting. Tough being a governor.

  6. - Team Sleep - Wednesday, Sep 3, 14 @ 10:49 am:

There is a reason that Forby’s term always seems to fall on a presidential election year…

  7. - RNUG - Wednesday, Sep 3, 14 @ 10:50 am:

Yes, Quinn needs Cook and the collars … but this tme he may find he needs a bit of downstate also. We’ll know election night …

  8. - wordslinger - Wednesday, Sep 3, 14 @ 10:52 am:

Southern Illinois needs to get off its mindset that prisons are economic development tools.

They should be raising Cain to get the state to promote the region in Northeastern Illinois for tourism.

And legalizing weed. They’re growing plenty of it down there illegally, anyway. Put the gangsters out of business and let everyone get a shot at a slice of pie.

Quinn could do much better south of I80 if he were to move the fracking issue onto the front burner. The proposed regs, if enacted, could easily delay any meaningful drilling well into the next decade. It’s tough, tho. The urban environmentalists from Chicago who are bent on banning fracking altogether are watching and Quinn must protect his base.

JS Mill - I don’t think you got the joke.

  11. - Yellow Dog Democrat - Wednesday, Sep 3, 14 @ 11:02 am:

Quinn would probably be thrilled to see a repeat of his 2010 performance, but I think it will be much different undercurrent this year.

Quinn is struggling over economic issues, but Rauner will struggle with his base over social issues. There is no Green Party candidate, no Cohen, only a Libertarian this time, and I would be the does better than 1 percent.

AFSCME is significant in Illinois, and IDOC employees are well organized. But Rauner wants to gut funding for local government, which divides AFSCME, teachers are appalled by him, and Rauner’s efforts to undermine prevailing wage are fighting words with the building trades that dot southern Illinois.

And while southern Illinois’ wine industry continues to struggle…

Couldn’t Erickson find a downstate Republican who doesn’t want to cut spending? Judging by the roll call votes, there are a lot of them to choose from.

  13. - Cabildero - Wednesday, Sep 3, 14 @ 11:07 am:

And get fracking going. Quinn’s done a great job of stalling that down there.

JSM, everyone got it but you. I’d suggest you draw your own conclusions, but such advice is fraught with danger. Therefore, ask for help from the next 9 year old you see.

well if prisons are going to be open, the jobs should go proportionally by population. that would mean locating them other than in downstate. all counties are not created equal by population.

The effort to promote courtesy a few weeks ago here on Cap Fax seems to have failed , based on the name calling and assorted insults on the comments boards today. This keeps up and all the sand will be tossed out of the sandbox by the end of the day (cue visual of three year olds, pelting each other with handfuls of wet sand)

    YDD,

I think the southern Illinois whine industry is doing just fine.

RP, everyone can aspire to do better. Even you man; wet sand? Ouch!

“He predicted the governor could see a repeat of his 2010 performance when he won just three downstate counties — Jackson, Alexander and St. Clair.”

Where’s Willy to remind Forby that counties don’t vote?

  20. - lovecraft - Wednesday, Sep 3, 14 @ 12:41 pm:

Quinn will lose downstate by an even bigger margin than last time and won’t garner the amount of support from Chicago that he received last time. Say hello to Governor Snake Oil Rauner.

  21. - Roadiepig - Wednesday, Sep 3, 14 @ 1:22 pm:

    A guy… :

I used wet sand in order to not use the actual word to describe what seems to be the item many are flinging at each other here today ;-)

  22. - wordslinger - Wednesday, Sep 3, 14 @ 1:44 pm:

DD, you don’t make any sense.

Quinn signed the fracking bill. The damage with “urban environmentalists” is done.

Now you say he wants regulations to strangle it.
Why? To honk off everyone on the issue?

Would you rather Illinois just have an elected regulatory commission that tells you where and when you can drill, and how much you can take out of the ground every month, like Texas?

  23. - Rusty618 - Wednesday, Sep 3, 14 @ 1:56 pm:

Quinn has closed four state facilities in Jackson County the last couple of years - the Youth Prison Boot Camp (Murphysboro), the Glass House (halfway house in Carbondale), IDES office(in Murphysboro) and the State Police Crime Lab in Carbondale. I don’t think he will be getting many votes in Jackson County at this election.

  24. - Dan Bureaucrat - Wednesday, Sep 3, 14 @ 2:42 pm:

That headline is an exaggeration: “New Quinn ad touts his push to close prisons.” From all the hubbub, I thought it was a new ad.

Then I realized that “closing 50 state properties” was mentioned in the lawnmower ad about fixing state government.

  25. - Keyser Soze - Wednesday, Sep 3, 14 @ 2:56 pm:

Word Slinger is on to something. Legalizing weed south of I-70 might bail out the region.

I’m going to send a private message to a certain guy explaining what you mean RP. You’re alright with me brother. :)

  27. - wordslinger - Wednesday, Sep 3, 14 @ 3:14 pm:

Keyzer, illegal marijuana is the biggest cash crop in the United States, bigger than corn or beans.

South of I-70? You bet. Marijuana already is the biggest cash crop in Kentucky and Tennessee.

It’s crazy to leave it to the gangsters, just like it was crazy to leave beer to the gangsters in the 20s.

All it does is allow the most violent in society to profit and corrupt off something people are going to do anyway.

  28. - Anon - Wednesday, Sep 3, 14 @ 4:13 pm:

Is Southern IL doesn’t like Quinn’s budget cuts, wait until they see what Rauner will do after he rolls back the entire temporary tax hike, reducing revenues by $8B a year.

  29. - flea - Wednesday, Sep 3, 14 @ 8:46 pm:

    4 B 4 U…….great statesman.

  30. - dr. reason a. goodwin - Wednesday, Sep 3, 14 @ 9:53 pm:

Rusty618, Quinn will still win Jackson County, I think. Too many SIU employees afraid of Rauner. The wild card will be the strong GOP turnout for Mike Bost in his congressional race.
