Starting to gear up a bit

Tuesday, Sep 16, 2014 - Posted by Rich Miller

* The antibiotics are starting to do their job. I’m still not feeling great, but I think I’ll be blogging some today.

It seems like half the people I know have been sick during the past week. So, we’ll make this an open thread about recent illnesses.

  1. - Carhart Representative - Tuesday, Sep 16, 14 @ 9:45 am:

    Coughing as I read.

  2. - Big Muddy - Tuesday, Sep 16, 14 @ 9:50 am:

Glad you’re on the upswing Rich. Mrs. muddy and I are finally recovered from fine summer head colds. The kind that linger for days.
    Be well.

  3. - Fan of Cap Fax - Tuesday, Sep 16, 14 @ 9:53 am:

No illnesses to speak of, just glad you are getting better, Rich!

  4. - Mason born - Tuesday, Sep 16, 14 @ 9:55 am:

Glad to see your doing better.

worst thing i’ve heard going around lately is the Hand, foot, and Mouth virus. Friend told me when they took their daughter in for it at 11 A.M. the Dr. had seen 4 cases already.

  5. - Stan - Tuesday, Sep 16, 14 @ 9:55 am:

My wife gets sick about twice a decade. She’s sick right now.

  6. - Stones - Tuesday, Sep 16, 14 @ 9:56 am:

I just had it a couple of weeks ago. It sucks.

  7. - Streator Curmudgeon - Tuesday, Sep 16, 14 @ 9:57 am:

Hope your recovery is quick and complete, Rich.

Here in Streator something is going around that starts as a sinus or respiratory problem then goes down to the chest. I’ve avoided it so far, but I’m a frequent visitor to the two places my doctor says are the best places to catch viruses: Walmart and church.

  8. - 47th Ward - Tuesday, Sep 16, 14 @ 10:03 am:

I had it all last week. Starts off with a sore throat, advances to the sinuses, then descends into the chest, where it moves in like a bad brother-in-law crashing on your couch for a week.

Just now starting to feel better. Good luck Rich. Stay on the meds, we need you up and running.

  9. - DuPage - Tuesday, Sep 16, 14 @ 10:08 am:

Glad to hear you are feeling better Rich. I heard the bug going around right now is not the flu, but it reminds me I should get a flu shot.

  10. - Ken_in_Aurora - Tuesday, Sep 16, 14 @ 10:16 am:

    Does this look infected? (points)

Seriously, half the people in my office have been sick with some kind of respiratory illness in the last few weeks. I’ve dodged the bullet so far.

  11. - A guy... - Tuesday, Sep 16, 14 @ 10:22 am:

More blessed than ever to still be in the other half who aren’t afflicted with this nasty virus. Hope you all recover quickly.

  12. - Grandson of Man - Tuesday, Sep 16, 14 @ 10:29 am:

I had it during the summer, and I had bad throat soreness.

Dr. Grandson would recommend a strong sativa or sativa-dominant hybrid for pain relief, energy and mental clarity–except cannabis is still illegal and I only play a doctor on TV.

  13. - foster brooks - Tuesday, Sep 16, 14 @ 10:33 am:

Leroux polish blackberry brandy cures all

  14. - VanillaMan - Tuesday, Sep 16, 14 @ 10:34 am:

    Just for you, Rich!

    Soft kitty,
    Warm kitty,
    Little ball of fur,
    Happy kitty,
    Sleepy kitty,
    Purr, purr, purr

    Milking pity,
    In the Windy City,
    Campaign saboteurs,
    Happy Quinn,
    Thinks he’ll win,
    Sure, sure, sure

    Soft stances,
    Fuzzy stances,
    Tough questions all deferred,
    Happy Bruce,
    Issues diffuse,
    Blurred, blurred, blurred

  15. - Siyotanka - Tuesday, Sep 16, 14 @ 10:44 am:

Mine started on the flight back from Europe on Sunday…left part of me on Aer Lingus…my bride now has it…started early yesterday morning for her. My 101.5 fever has broke and the “dayquill” is working…now to cater to her fever and coughing…

  16. - downstate hack - Tuesday, Sep 16, 14 @ 10:57 am:

I’m just sick about Illinois politics and our ridiculous choices for Governor.

    Glad you are recovering Rich.

  17. - Modest proposal - Tuesday, Sep 16, 14 @ 11:10 am:

Felt kinda rough this weekend, but went out pounding fence posts for 4×4s. Dropped the pounder on my head, started gushing blood. Found out emergency room visits deductibles increased 400% (thanks Obama care). Got my head stapled at the prompt care. Managed to escape a concussion though. But now I have that cold that was coming on. Politics is really starting to give me a headache..

  18. - Anyone Remember - Tuesday, Sep 16, 14 @ 11:24 am:

Seems every year within a month of school starting something runs rampant through the community.

  19. - dupage dan - Tuesday, Sep 16, 14 @ 11:53 am:

I’m in a cave in an undisclosed location. Stay away from me, all of you!

  20. - dupage dan - Tuesday, Sep 16, 14 @ 11:57 am:

I have been blessed recently with no illnesses. I suffered a broken rib earlier this summer and a herniated disc in my neck during last winter. Have mostly recovered from those altho I have some residual weakness in my hand.

I have had a history of sinus infections over the years. Antibiotics are not of much help as most are viral in nature. At the turn of the season, I start using a “Neti Pot”. I won’t describe here. I also make sure to maintain proper levels of humidity in my home. And I get a flu shot annually. Those 3 are essential for my respiratory health.

  21. - Wensicia - Tuesday, Sep 16, 14 @ 12:05 pm:

This new respiratory virus has been all over the news the past week or so. Hundreds of children have been admitted into hospitals in several states. The first three weeks of school I’ve had a third of my students showing symptoms, included a rough cough that can last for days.

  22. - Former Merit Comp Slave - Tuesday, Sep 16, 14 @ 12:09 pm:

Glad your meds are kicking in so fast. Had it last week and still have remnants hanging on. Slice up a lemon, some ginger root and cover with honey in pint jar. Keep in the frig. Take a spoonful and put in cup of hot water. Drink as much as you want. It helps!

  23. - dupage dan - Tuesday, Sep 16, 14 @ 12:16 pm:

Fresh grated garlic, honey and hot water. Oh, and don’t forget the bourbon.

  24. - Anonymous - Tuesday, Sep 16, 14 @ 1:58 pm:

I can’t get sick. My birthday is Monday and I am going Apple Picking on Saturday.

    Everyone is sick around me.

I do not know why it is starting earlier this year.

Hopfully, it will not get to me or my family. Birthday season is upon us.

  25. - Siriusly - Tuesday, Sep 16, 14 @ 3:02 pm:

Hacking cough for three weeks. Antibiotics don’t help!

  26. - Anonymous - Tuesday, Sep 16, 14 @ 4:52 pm:

Been down since Labor Day weekend and only slowly improving. Body aches. Sore throat. Cough with plenty of nasty lung crud coming up. Lethargy and confusion. Worst. Summer. Cold. Ever.
