A bit petty, no?

Monday, Sep 22, 2014 - Posted by Rich Miller

* Last Friday, Matt Belcher posted a link on his law firm’s Facebook page to a post of mine about the Illinois Policy Institute

That same day, an Illinois Policy Institute staffer gave Belcher’s law firm a “one star” rating on Facebook

* Belcher’s response

Kristina Rasmussen your ‘one star’ rating of our legal office seems a bit unfair since you have never even set foot in our office, you never spoken to any of our attorneys, nor partaken of any of our available legal services. Perhaps if one wants people to respect their opinion, one would base the same on actual verifiable evidence rather than ignorance. Just sayin’.

Ms. Rasmussen is lucky our state has an anti-SLAPP law (actually we all are, but this is more than petty).

  2. - A guy... - Monday, Sep 22, 14 @ 12:02 pm:

Who knows. Maybe they had a half star before the post? lol

  3. - 4 percent - Monday, Sep 22, 14 @ 12:03 pm:

With all due respect, my guess is that Matt Belcher has never set foot in the IPI nor had a conversation with them!

  4. - Phenomynous - Monday, Sep 22, 14 @ 12:08 pm:

She isn’t the only one-star review. My guess by reading the reviews is that this dude should maybe get political with his comments on his private FB account as opposed to his Law Office’ account.

But, as he so aptly points out, it’s his First Amendment…just don’t be surprised when people don’t agree with what you say and give you the oh so dreaded bad FB review.

    Very petty, indeed.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve accidentally clicked that annoying star rating system on FB. Then once you’ve clicked it, you can’t back out of it… I’ve rated two different campaigns a 1 star by accident. It might seem petty to them, but honestly it was an accident… followed by an unwillingness to change my rating to anything but one star, of course.

  6. - Archiesmom - Monday, Sep 22, 14 @ 12:18 pm:

Ratings like these are too easily manipulated to be relied upon. There’s a lot of attention to a story about a restaurant in CA that is campaigning for a one-star Yelp review to expose the fact that Yelp will delete good or bad reviews depending on whether or not a business purchases their advertising - a practice that has held up in court so far. But this is petty, to say the least.

  7. - Formerly Known As... - Monday, Sep 22, 14 @ 12:19 pm:

Sounds like she is a fan of The Second City comedy group’s new “Pat Quinn” ad http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D1_t_GMGhvQ

== He’ll go so far as to never hire those guys again and give them a poor review on Angie’s List. ==

As for Mr. Belcher, he posted the link without comment. A bit petty, yes.

    @ 4 percent:

“With all due respect, my guess is that Matt Belcher has never set foot in the IPI nor had a conversation with them!”

IPI’s product is what they write and say. Clearly Belcher has consumed that product because he knows what IPI wrote. Belcher in fact used the product/service IPI produces.

Unless Rasmussen has been a client, been on the opposing side, or otherwise has had some professional interaction — consumed the product of Belcher’s law firm — her review is just based on pettiness and vindictiveness.

    Do you see the difference?

  9. - Just Observing - Monday, Sep 22, 14 @ 12:45 pm:

=== With all due respect, my guess is that Matt Belcher has never set foot in the IPI nor had a conversation with them! ===

Are you really trying to compare the two posts? Apples and oranges.

  10. - Just Observing - Monday, Sep 22, 14 @ 12:46 pm:

^^ VM said it better :)

  11. - Anonymous - Monday, Sep 22, 14 @ 1:17 pm:

Bridge closures next? Oh, these almighty staffers and “appointees”….

  12. - Formerly Known As... - Monday, Sep 22, 14 @ 2:18 pm:

Belcher posted a link without comment that was seen by a handful of people. Many times more have now seen his response and have heard of his firm.

Giving the one star review was not only petty, it backfired.

  13. - John Boch - Monday, Sep 22, 14 @ 2:18 pm:

    Exhibit #2.

  14. - wordslinger - Monday, Sep 22, 14 @ 2:20 pm:

In other news, I read a column over the weekend by a self-described journalist named Scott Reeder who saw someone at the store using a LINK card — proof positive that Indiana is the Lost City of Gold.

  15. - Michelle Flaherty - Monday, Sep 22, 14 @ 2:23 pm:

And here I thought the IPI was pro-business.

  16. - 4 percent - Monday, Sep 22, 14 @ 2:28 pm:

I was being facetious and playing the devil’s advocate! However, the fact that he linked to a post from Cap Fax doesn’t mean that he has consumed the product or services. It meant that he linked to a post.

  17. - My 2 cents... - Monday, Sep 22, 14 @ 3:03 pm:

Who cares what IPI says in the first place…other than their blind donors of course?

  18. - Demoralized - Monday, Sep 22, 14 @ 4:47 pm:

IPI is a little testy aren’t they? Somebody over there needs to grow up. This is just one more reason to dismiss the IPI as a complete joke.

  19. - kramden1019 - Monday, Sep 22, 14 @ 5:40 pm:

Can I rate Ms. Rasmussen on FB?

  20. - steve schnorf - Monday, Sep 22, 14 @ 9:00 pm:

I don’t think IPI has learned the lesson that Jim Oberweis appears to have learned: politics is a game of addition, and the numbers to be won lie in the middle, not at the ends of the spectrum

  21. - Cheswick - Monday, Sep 22, 14 @ 11:36 pm:

I would have thought Kristina had tougher skin than that.
