*** UPDATED x1 *** Question of the day

Wednesday, Oct 1, 2014 - Posted by Rich Miller

* Sun-Times

What better way to make your point than with a “Say Yes to the Dress” parody?

That’s exactly what a new ad from the College Republican National Committee is doing to urge people to vote for Republican gubernatorial candidate Bruce Rauner. […]

It starts out with a woman wearing a classy, well-fit wedding dress, where she proclaims “the Bruce Rauner is perfect.”

“Bruce Rauner is becoming a trusted brand,” the woman says. “He has new ideas that don’t break your budget.”

* The online ad

* The Question: Funny or not? Take the poll and then explain your answer in comments, please.

*** UPDATE *** The College Republican National Committee has produced very similar ads for five other gubernatorial races.

  1. - my two cents - Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 2:20 pm:

So out of touch it’s embarrassing.

  2. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 2:22 pm:

    Voted “Not”

C’mon, there is a difference between laughing with someone, and laughing at someone.

This is a mocking at alleged simpleness.

If you have a wife, daughter, aunt, niece, …mother… this is a mocking to say simple superficial ideals drives them.

“If it perrdy and it sparkles, they’ll like it.”

    Pretty disappointing.

  3. - Nony - Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 2:24 pm:

I like it. It’s part of a campaign the college republicans are doing in a lot of different states to try to engage younger voters in a culturally relevant way

  4. - Anonymous - Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 2:24 pm:

They do realize it’s the moms they need, right?

The only time I feel bad for republicans is when they try to be creative and funny. Awkward and pathetic every time.

  5. - Lunchbox - Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 2:25 pm:

This is bad on so many levels. So what you’re telling me is that evaluating a candidate for running a complex state government is like picking a wedding dress?

  6. - Gooner - Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 2:25 pm:

Seemed creepy and degrading to women.

Who is the intended audience here?

This may say more about College Republicans and their values than anything else.

  7. - Nony - Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 2:26 pm:

it was also written by women, which i think is important to note before you blankly say that it’s patronizing to them

  8. - Anonymous - Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 2:26 pm:

Shoulda been a Carhart instead of wedding dress.

  9. - Regina George - Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 2:27 pm:

Brittany, stop trying to make Rauner happen. #embarrassing

  10. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 2:28 pm:

===…to try to engage younger voters in a culturally relevant way===

So, your granddaughter, daughter, niece…you want them talked “to” like this?

“Sit down sweetie, look at the perrdy dresses and get ‘engaged’ in politics.”

If it’s to get young women engaged and invested in the process, don’t those young women deserve to be respected enough to give them facts to make a judgement?

“We don’t respect or think engaging you with facts will work…”

It’s pretty condescending, if this is the true attempt to get participation.

  11. - Anon - Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 2:29 pm:

It can be patronizing to women and still be written by them. The two aren’t exclusive. It’s just a really, really bad ad.

  12. - Gooner - Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 2:30 pm:

    A couple more points –

Do they really think the champagne at the end was a smart move, considering the “$55 million a year/out of touch/belongs to wine club” issue with Bruce? Are the people who made this ad from here?

This is just more evidence that the right should stick to angry rants. They are not funny by nature. They need to understand their limitations.

  13. - wordslinger - Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 2:31 pm:

I had to google to find out it’s a relatively popular long-running reality show.

Beats me if it’s funny, but it’s not meant for me.

  14. - JS Mill - Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 2:32 pm:

OOoof. Easily the worst yet. It does stick with the theme that voters are dumb like the trash can van ad.

  15. - walker - Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 2:32 pm:

Typical of a national ad not properly tailored to the local race.

  16. - Crazy Like a Fox - Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 2:33 pm:

This was hilarious! A little over done but it could be worse.

The Mom in it was the best part! This isn’t going to move anyone but considering two powerful, older men can be brought down and simplified to be nothing but two dresses is funny!

I don’t like it as a real ad but a great silly College Party online vid.

  17. - Concerned Voter - Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 2:33 pm:

It sounds like the people who have a comment have never seen the show. It is aimed at that group not “you”. It is funny and makes a statement that they will enjoy. Needless to say I voted “funny”.

  18. - Nony - Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 2:34 pm:

    Willy,

    I am a granddaughter, daughter niece, etc….
Don’t watch the show, but have friends that do, so I thought it was pretty funny. Of course it’s not supposed to be the end all and be all of the political conversation, just supposed to be eye-catching and different. Young people are incredibly turned off by politics and the status quo. Political participation among the age group this is targeted at is dismal at best. If this helps get the conversation started, i’m all for it.

  19. - Anonymous - Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 2:35 pm:

“How will we afford the Bruce Rauner though? It clearly isn’t in our budget?”

    “Close loopholes and reform CMS.”

  20. - Anon Mahna - Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 2:35 pm:

It seems fairly off-base in terms of who the Republican party should be catering towards. I can’t imagine mocking mothers of the bride as being out of touch will play well with collar county soccer moms. Not to mention it plays as out of touch toward the younger vote since Say Yes to the Dress isn’t nearly as culturally relevant as it was, say, four or five years ago.

  21. - Responsa - Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 2:36 pm:

==They do realize it’s the moms they need, right?==
Er, no. Their vote problem is primarily with young-ish women who have been fed the “War on Women” bit. I think this ad is strange (as opposed to either funny or not funny). But I am not 20, and I am not deep into social media. I give them credit for trying to reach that female college age demographic with a unique and memorable ad that stands apart from the traditional political pap.

  22. - Old men this is not for you - Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 2:37 pm:

May not like it….but that show is the biggest hit with 15 year old young women up to women in their early 30s. Women in those age groups have parties to watch that show…they love it. It is the “Sex In The City” for women of the 2014. So for all of you who say it is bad….they are not playing to you–they are going after women 18(some who can vote for the first time)-under 35. So if you don’t like it…you are just an “old man” who doesn’t know what is popular with young women!! This WILL get their attention!

  23. - William j Kelly - Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 2:37 pm:

Is this commercial intended to offend women voters? Because if it is that’s hilarious! And if it isn’t that’s hilarious!

  24. - VanillaMan - Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 2:37 pm:

    I loved it!
It is creative, goofy and puts a fun spin on things. It is great to see young ladies having fun and doing it their way!

    I salute you ladies!
    Well done!

  25. - Archiesmom - Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 2:37 pm:

Not so much. I’m a woman, and I think it’s condescending. Electing a governor right now is a much bigger commitment than a dress for a day. Even though the pictures last forever.

  26. - Gooner - Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 2:38 pm:

“Shoulda been a Carhart instead of wedding dress.”

Now that would have been a good ad. Imagine if she had changed into a Carhart and a Timex and said “Forget the pretty dress. Time to get to work fixing Illinois.”

Could have gone for a nice “women work and are not just pretty things” theme. But that would require College Republicans to accept that premise.

  27. - Concerned - Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 2:38 pm:

    Horribly condescending.

  28. - MP - Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 2:39 pm:

Messed up ad. As a woman, I’m offended that they couldn’t address the issues head on. Gives the impression that women are just ‘bubbling idiots’ IMHO.

  29. - Big Joe - Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 2:39 pm:

Voted NOT. It’s not funny, it’s a pathetic ad. I thought it was a skit on SNL, high school version. They better try again.

  30. - ChrisB - Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 2:40 pm:

    @Regina - Nice.

I thought it was funny. It’s actually a solid parody of the real show. Sure it’s mindless, but it’s targeting a demographic who is also considered a key viewership of the show.

And compared to the other online ads, this one has some pretty good production qualities.

Some of you need to lighten up a little. Not every commercial needs ominous music comparing the other guy to Satan.

  31. - Bluefish - Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 2:41 pm:

Bruce Rauner - Creating jobs for “comedy” writers not good enough to get hired by The Onion.

  32. - Soccermom - Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 2:41 pm:

I may be the only regular reader on this blog who watches SYTTD. (My daughter is a fan.) There is a germ of a clever idea here, but the execution is off. The actual show is much funnier.

  33. - William j Kelly - Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 2:41 pm:

I have a hunch ‘crazy like a fox’ is the women in the commercial.

  34. - Angel's Sword - Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 2:44 pm:

Disgusting and sexist and just about what you’d expect from the College Republicans.

  35. - VanillaMan - Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 2:44 pm:

BTW - I am a big fan of this great show as well.

Now, perhaps a parody of this campaign done as Adventure Time!

  36. - Anonymous - Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 2:45 pm:

Also comes with the Evelyn Sanguinetti co-dress.

  37. - Responsa - Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 2:45 pm:

Whooie! a lot of ageist poopeyheads are outing themselves on this thread, today. :)

  38. - OneMan - Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 2:46 pm:

I thought it was funny and I knew people would complain about it…

And yes, thanks to others in my home I have seen the show multiple times.

  39. - MrJM (@MisterJayEm) - Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 2:47 pm:

Candidates: If your team comes to you with an ad that makes suburban women of a certain age look like heels, fire your team.

    – MrJM

  40. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 2:47 pm:

    - Nony -,

You’d be surprised what people bring to these comments.

    I come at this very simply;

Do I feel engaging young female voters in this manner, even in tongue and cheek mocking way (I love a good spoof/mock), is it laughing with… or at?

Sometimes, even Saturday Night Live is laughing at, not with…

The question that helped me to find my own response? “Would I use it to engage a granddaughter? Daughter? Niece?”

    No…so I voted accordingly.

  41. - NewWestSuburbanGOP'er - Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 2:48 pm:

As a former advertising executive, this is the ABSOLUTE worst ad I’ve seen produced ever! What person in their right mind after seeing this piece of crap would vote for Rauner? He is quickly becoming a joke! I said it yesterday and I will say it again today….

    Rauner=1969 CUBS!

This is a total collapse in the making. Keep it up Bruce, as far as I’m concerned. I will take Pat Quinn over you and your untested, unknown ideas any day.

You are a uber-rich guy, with uber-rich friends who only wants to buy this election. Hell, I’m sure if you were to get elected, you would quit like Sara Palin.

  42. - Nony - Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 2:48 pm:

Allow me to clarify for some commenters:

This is a part of a series of similar ads released by the College Republican Org across the country. They use an almost the exact same dialogue for other Republican candidates. THEY WERE NOT APPROVED OF OR ENDORSED BY ANY CANDIDATE. And champagne is popped at the end of each one…

  43. - Jimmy CrackCorn - Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 2:50 pm:

    At around the :30 mark:
1.) “Worst Unemployment in the Midwest.” Michigan is considered East Coast now?

2.) “The highest income tax in the nation.” Really… they said that.

  44. - Ducky LaMoore - Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 2:50 pm:

Oh no!!! I just spilled really expensive wine on my really cheap Bruce Rauner!

  45. - northernwatersports - Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 2:50 pm:

Horrible. I get the idea of age and cultural relevance trying to engage college voters…even the right idea to somewhat parody the question of ‘who’ to vote for. But really…over the top tacky, non-inspiring and just plain painful to watch. 1 out of 10.

  46. - NewWestSuburbanGOP'er - Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 2:51 pm:

And another thing, if I were you after seeing this crap- I would fire whomever approved it.

Methinks, you are not a smart or a skilled businessman as you are claiming to be.

Actually, don’t fire them, have them produce more junk like this, so the public can see who you really are.

  47. - Aldyth - Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 2:52 pm:

    It’s insulting. Full stop.

  48. - Gooner - Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 2:52 pm:

    Nony,
You are probably right, and that’s the problem.

When you don’t understand the issues, you bungle into things like the champagne at the end.

And then people see this and think “Rauner. Oh yeah. He’s the guy who really likes expensive wine. Thanks for the reminder, kids!”

  49. - D.P.Gumby - Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 2:53 pm:

Insulting, condescending, not even a parody of a bad joke. In other words, it perfectly captures Brucie and his campaign…but not in the way they intended!

  50. - Old men this is not for you - Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 2:54 pm:

Most of you don’t et this…it is NOT intended for you–it is intended for those who watch Jon Stewart to get all their news…if you say it is sexist etc…you are missing it…you are not the target audience.. the other ads are for you. Non of you are in advertising and PR–thankfully or you would have no clients.

  51. - William j Kelly - Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 2:55 pm:

Wait a second! Where is the Chad Grimm dress?!!!

  52. - Old men this is not for you - Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 2:58 pm:

D.P. Gumby et. al…New West Suburbaner GOP–it is obvious why you are no longer in advertising…this is playing to the “new” 18 year old voters who have NEVER voted before and the 20’s somethings that are too busy buying their lattes at Starbucks to even know who is running for Governor…again, you are NOT the target market. Young women LOVE that show..again just like the young women from the late 90s and early 2000s love S&C.

  53. - Deeda - Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 2:59 pm:

I Love It!!!! Creative and remediable.

  54. - Cheryl44 - Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 2:59 pm:

Wow. So bad, and on so many levels.

  55. - A guy... - Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 3:00 pm:

It’s not funny or unfunny. It’s just a college try. It makes you smile in parts, but it’s just too far afield to work the parody for me. What is “funny” are the reactions here to it.

  56. - Jocko - Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 3:00 pm:

This one gives “Socky” a run for it’s money.

The dress epitomizes Rauner. It looks good, but you have no idea how well it’ll hold up. Not to mention, you’ll be paying for it long after you’ve left the boutique.

  57. - Anon - Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 3:01 pm:

Seems like it could have been a good concept, but it wasn’t executed properly. Maybe a cooking competition show would have been better…

  58. - Old men this is not for you - Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 3:01 pm:

  60. - salukidog - Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 3:03 pm:

A huge number of voters, particularly younger voters have long ago turned all of this off as noise by those (including everyone) that cannot be trusted and are out of touch. This is for a very targeted audience, that frankly, has a much more hip, updated and tolerant sense of humor than most of the comments here. Just sayin’. Get over yourselves, you, and I, are posting on a political blog on an afternoon when it is 75 degrees out and beautiful. What on earth do we know about what is funny, or even normal???

  61. - wordslinger - Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 3:04 pm:

A Guy, I routinely find you hilarious when you’re not even trying to be.

  62. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 3:04 pm:

    - Old men this is not for you -,

    Ok, sell me why I should show this to someone if the demographic;

Explain where they are laughing with…and not at…in this final product rolled out.

According to you, since we aren’t the target, we don’t get it; what I do get and understand is watching in tone and tenor what condescending is and what laughing with is.

Are all older women, like the older woman portrayed, are all these women simpletons? Not forward thinking?

    Sell me.

  63. - DuPage Bard - Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 3:05 pm:

Would have been a better ad if at the end Jim Oberweiss jumped out of the backroom to yell, “I am somebody!”

  64. - Jimmy CrackCorn - Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 3:06 pm:

Adding to what others are saying, this is not a Rauner Campaign creation. Came out of DC, here is Rick Scott’s version.

Cookie cutter DC garbage, just like all of the Congressional commercials I have seen this cycle. How do donors keep giving these Committees/PACs big money. Wouldn’t it be better spent on local consultants?

  65. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 3:07 pm:

Oswego Willy see my 3:01 post copied from a Target Market-Nony 2:34 post…and see Salukidog…they get it…gets young persons talking who probably would never engage in the process if not for these ads. Salukidog characterized you in his/her one post…you sit on this thing day in and day out…not all older women are like the ads’ “mom”—but, unfortunately, in Illinois MANY are!

I think it’s great. Campaigns and parties don’t reach out to young voters. Most aren’t interested in politics, but if this teaches them a little something or peaks their interest, GREAT! It makes sense to young girls, which is the point, right?

I wish more political ads were this entertaining.

  74. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 3:17 pm:

Typical college republicans. Everybody ends up drinking…

  79. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 3:21 pm:

    1) - Soccermom -. I’ll stay on that side, thanks .

    2) - VanillaMan - over half the planet is female, people have mothers, have sisters, brothers get married, they have daughters, they’re nieces. Odds are people might even be married, have daughters… I explained how I came at it.

    3) I know you didn’t comment that, did you you you didn’t orca rectify asking if you did and forgot?

  80. - zatoichi - Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 3:21 pm:

Most comedy develops a setup, then a hit and gets a pace going by repeating/slightly adjusting the process. This just clunks into one idea after another. Boring.

“Bruce Rauner is becoming a trusted brand,” the woman says. “He has new ideas that don’t break your budget.” He will be cashing out shortly after you buy the dress. Want a SSD with that?

  81. - Amalia - Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 3:23 pm:

OMflippinG this is totally insulting to women. it’s not funny. it treats women as if what they look for in a candidate is some outdated “i like the boy” concept. it is multiple levels of wrong.

and, yes, this can be true if it is written by women….for a man.
in junior high things seem to get divided, girls who decide that they have to do everything for the male gaze and they become opposed to girls who are just trying to do whatever. the women who wrote this are like those girls in junior high who I found to be idiotic.

  82. - Norseman - Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 3:25 pm:

Can I vote that the ad is stupid?

  83. - Curious - Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 3:27 pm:

I’m within the target audience (at least age/gender wise), have watched the show quite a few times and just didn’t find this amusing. It’s a fairly accurate parody of the show’s format but felt like it was missing something.

  84. - Concerned - Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 3:32 pm:

Who exactly is the target audience for this dreck? And when you put out an ad, if you insult a population larger than the target audeince, is the ad effective? Do you define effective by how hip or inside the workd of some stupid TV show it is? I define effective by whether it gets you more votes than it loses. This loses.

  85. - Anonymous - Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 3:33 pm:

Sequel: They go to pick up the dress. It is filled with fleas, doesn’t fit, and is wrong color. Customers inquire. Schrimpf appears to tell them Mr. Rauner divested his share long ago and has no knowledge of the inner workings of this company.

  86. - snookie - Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 3:36 pm:

i think it’s cute. it speaks to young voters differently and connects to their generation

  87. - Black Ivy - Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 3:36 pm:

Funny. Effective. Appealling to college-age kids. If you don’t apprecaite the humor, perhaps you aren’t meant to? #worksforme

  88. - Ducky LaMoore - Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 3:37 pm:

    @Watchdog

Yeah right. I was a college republican. Nope, no drinking. Basically, no fun at all. Only Dan Rutherford and Steve Rauschenberger had anything worthy of even being close to a “party.” And even those were so-so.

  89. - Curious - Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 3:39 pm:

Does it really speak to young voters differently? Most of the lines are talking points. To me, it seems like the visual presentation is the only thing that is different.

  90. - MrJM (@MisterJayEm) - Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 3:43 pm:

Pay attention Rauner critics: This ad is intended for a very targeted demographic consisting of persons about whom you know nothing, about whom you CAN no nothing, and of whom you aren’t even aware!

This ad looks pathetic and lame to your sad and narrow minds, but the pro-Bruce people are playing Vulcan three-dimensional advertising chess and this is the first move in endgame!!

    – MrJM

  91. - SlapshotII - Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 3:46 pm:

Great Ad ! The oldies prolly don’t get it - but for younger voters - those looking to the future of their lives rather than the past - this ad is hip and relevant.

  92. - NewWestSuburbanGOP'er - Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 3:50 pm:

Sequel: They go to pick up the dress. It is filled with fleas, doesn’t fit, and is wrong color. Customers inquire. Schrimpf appears to tell them Mr. Rauner divested his share long ago and has no knowledge of the inner workings of this company.

    Now that would be funny!

  93. - my two cents - Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 3:55 pm:

Created by college republican women - all two of them.

  94. - Jimmy CrackCorn - Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 3:59 pm:

==but for younger voters - those looking to the future of their lives rather than the past - this ad is hip and relevant.==

The younger voters do not use the word “hip” to describe viral video marketing.

Rich are all of these IP’s regurgitating the same mindless argument coming from the DC College Repubs office?

  95. - Roadiepig - Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 4:00 pm:

Hey look! A fresh new crop of Raunerbots, posting snarky comments ,and explaining how the “inside baseball” political animals who are (in many cases) long time political campaign consultants, or otherwise involved in actually winning elections ,on how they are “out of touch” or telling them “it’s not for you”. Either Rauner’s campaign pulled a few of their college age volunteers off the phone banks to give us their deep insight, or the usual suspects just changed their names to seem more hip (oops- sorry I used such dated slang).

I voted not funny, but I guess if you enjoy middle aged being portrayed in this fashion you might find the “humor” in this ad. Please run this one in heavy rotation Rauner camp!

  96. - Come on man! - Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 4:00 pm:

What if Quinn parodied duck dynasty?

  97. - Dirty Red - Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 4:01 pm:

I’m not the target demo, but there is something quite stomach churning about the idea of “wearing Bruce Rauner.”

    20-year-old van ads, anyone?

  98. - Roadiepig - Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 4:03 pm:

Can’t wait to see what the college Republicans can come up with for “Pregnant And Sixteen”. That ought to be hillarious!

    /snark

  99. - Langhorne - Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 4:07 pm:

Just plain dumb. There is no logic or relevance to comparing the candidates to dresses. Embarrassing.

  100. - Wensicia - Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 4:10 pm:

It’s condescending, representing Rauner’s attitude towards the voters he’s trying to attract, and it’s stupid, representing Rauner’s opinion of those voters. I suppose this works for him.

  101. - Skeptic - Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 4:13 pm:

Meh. I would have found it funnier if it poked fun at Rauner too (i.e., non-partisan.) I do like the “Bruce Rauner” (the dress, not the candidate) though.

“He has new ideas that don’t break your budget” That’s actually one of my problems with it, is how materialistic the SYTTD is. Seriously, $6k+ on a dress?? It’s not about celebrating the creating of a new family, it’s showing off how much money they have. Wait…that reminds me of someone….

  102. - Hit or Miss - Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 4:13 pm:

“The highest income tax in the nation.”

Illinois may have a high income tax rate but other states have higher rates. In California, for example, I know that it is more than double the Illinois rate for some people.

This ad might appeal to a college freshman. For me the ad gets a failing grade.

  103. - Southern Girl - Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 4:17 pm:

As a recent mother-of-the-bride, I did not find this offensive, condescending, sexist… I thought it was quite funny. As political ads go, this one was spot on at making Rauner stand out as a candidate. Isn’t that the point.

  104. - Commander Norton - Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 4:17 pm:

I cringed through the whole thing. It was literally painful for me to watch. Regardless of the age or sex of the writers, it did not appeal to me at all, and I’m a young woman.

One also wonders if sooner than later, microtargeting will become a victim of its own success, as marketing-savvy young people are turned off by ever more precise - yet blatant - attempts to target them.

  105. - Just Observing - Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 4:23 pm:

As a husband who has been subjected to too many episodes of Say Yes to the Dress, I actually found this to be pretty funny. The mom’s reactions are very funny. I don’t see how this is sexist at all. As others have said, this isn’t supposed to be “the ad” that moves the election.

  106. - sal-says - Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 4:25 pm:

Just askin’ the Rauner folks: Why would anybody find this funny? Ya’all need a better selection of your focus groups. Is this the best ya’all can do to push your case for being gov?

How’s about instead, going out and actually describing your plans for what you’re gonna do as gov instead of evading and wishy-washing around most every real issue? By the way: Where’s the $ coming from under your administration?

  107. - Ducky LaMoore - Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 4:25 pm:

At least if I ever meet Rauner again I’ll know what to say… Hey Bruce! Where’s your dress?!

  108. - too obvious - Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 4:30 pm:

Absolutely horrible. And not just because it’s very demeaning to women.

I didn’t think I could be more opposed to Bruce Rauner. But i was wrong.

  109. - Joe Bidenopolous - Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 4:52 pm:

Hey, the women’s vote is all about superficial niceties, right? I mean, what’s more important to a female voter than a dress? Substantive issues? Bah.

Too bad this is just online - although it has been pointed to on Slate and some other sites - if enough subruban women saw it, it would flip a bunch to Quinn pretty quick. Just about as tone deaf as one can get.

  110. - yinn - Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 4:53 pm:

==Oh no!!! I just spilled really expensive wine on my really cheap Bruce Rauner!==

Yes! The one way the ad is funny is if you hatewatch it.

Soccermom has expressed it best, I think, in that there was a germ of an idea that had potential but was poorly executed. Several others here have pointed to a basic lack of respect as the culprit and that’s probably correct.

  111. - Joe Bidenopolous - Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 4:54 pm:

=it was also written by women, which i think is important to note before you blankly say that it’s patronizing to them=

Riiiight, because no women patronize other women? Give me a break. Have you seen Ann Coulter and her ilk? They loudly proclaim that women are the problem. Having female writers does not provide you immunity in a case of sexism…or anything else.

  112. - Joe Bidenopolous - Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 4:57 pm:

    Responsa-

“Their vote problem is primarily with young-ish women who have been targeted by the Republican War on Women.”

    There. Fixed it for you.

  113. - Joe Bidenopolous - Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 4:58 pm:

Also - I am not a woman, I admit it. However, I did show it to my 30-something wife who watches the show religiously and she was appalled by the sexism.

  114. - dupage dan - Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 5:02 pm:

    It’s a metaphor, people. Sheesh.

Oh, BTW, it is decidedly NOT funny.

These folks need a metaphorical transplant. This was lame 10.0

    Sling, thanks! Right? lol

  116. - Anonymous - Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 5:24 pm:

This ad looks like a junior high skit from the mid twentieth century. Not. Funny.

  117. - Rich Miller - Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 5:35 pm:

I’ve seen countless parodies by liberals of conservative Republican parents. Some were funny, some were most definitely not.

This one didn’t do much for me. Politics is a game of addition, and they subtracted every Dem-leaning woman over 40 - and every daughter who loves her Dem-leaning mom.

I learned a very long time ago, never, never, never get between a daughter and her mother.

    I voted Not.

If no one over 21 saw this ad, it might be effective. Someone please make me younger.

  120. - Michelle Flaherty - Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 6:23 pm:

The mom is registered to vote.
The daughter is registered at Macy’s.

  121. - Pete - Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 6:37 pm:

I don’t like the ad, but I do like the fact that it is different and is able to get people to talk about it.

It’s better than some of the negative mud slingling we’ve seen in most of the commercials.

  122. - Newsclown - Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 7:25 pm:

Customizing for the Illinois race, the cable reality show they parody SHOULD have been “RuPaul’s Drag Race”. I mean, you have both candidates outrageously making themselves over, to superficially look like something they really are not and never will be. And if you unwrap them, you’ll get an unwanted surprise.

  123. - Been there - Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 8:00 pm:

Kinda funny for a targeted group, but a big miss and as Rich Miller says, a subtraction for many others. And VanillaMan, you are kidding, right?
    - VanillaMan - Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 2:44 pm:
BTW - I am a big fan of this great show as well.

  124. - MoneyMoney - Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 8:38 pm:

Funny, but I dnt believe it moves any numbers. And I always think bad actors or actresses are funny.

  127. - Ducky LaMoore - Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 11:01 pm:

Just showed this to Mrs Ducky. After rolling with laughter for about 30 seconds… she informed me that she liked the Pat Quinn dress better….

  128. - southwest - Wednesday, Oct 1, 14 @ 11:36 pm:

It does get your attention because it is so different than the gazillions of ads on TV. My very conservative 20 year old thought it was OK, but my 18 year old who is very disinterested in politics liked it and remembered Rauner’s name.

  129. - Carhart Representative - Thursday, Oct 2, 14 @ 7:42 am:

I saw a Rick Scott version of the ad. It was being mocked by young women all over social media. It completely misses the group it’s targeting. I think the follow up will probably be about how Democrat policies give me that “not so fresh” feeling.

I forgot to remind everyone of Lena Dunham’s 2012 ad that equated voting for Obama and losing one’s virginity. Libs loved it. At least these young conservatives are using wedding metaphors!
