=It is pretty good. For Quinn! LOL
Thank you for reminding me about just some of Rauner’s problems Chicago GOP.=

Printed with a green banner and union bug these will make swell palm cards to hand-out at polling places.

  3. - Mighty M. Mouse - Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 5:58 pm:

Apparently no live network TV. It’s scheduled to be broadcast on tape from 10:35 to 11:35.

Ha! It was either that or cut out the second half of Dancing with the Stars. Not a hard question.

  4. - Oswego Willy - Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 6:01 pm:

    Looking forward to this.

  5. - Kasich Walker, Jr. - Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 7:37 pm:

Does anyone know any undecided voters who could possibly be moved to vote for one or the other candidates based on what they do, say, or look like during this debate?

  6. - Mittuns - Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 7:57 pm:

Will this be available somewhere online tomorrow?

  7. - Oswego Willy - Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 8:05 pm:

    Openings, nothing really new,

Majers is going back, like that tact.

  8. - Kasich Walker, Jr. - Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 8:06 pm:

Rauner does scare the status quo.

  9. - Oswego Willy - Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 8:06 pm:

    Quinn handles question better

Rauner does better, but pivots as victim

  10. - Oswego Willy - Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 8:09 pm:

Rauner loved state, but cuts into business jargon

Quinn pivots to Ford and outsourcing

  11. - Oswego Willy - Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 8:10 pm:

lol, Rauner asked for successful companies.

Hasn’t named a single company, not one company.

  12. - Mighty M. Mouse - Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 8:11 pm:

Rauner isn’t the subject of the vicious lies, he’s the one who is doing it. What chutzpah!

Another Blago for sure, except a whole lot worse.

Rauner is unbelievable, and yet I’m not surprised.

  13. - Oswego Willy - Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 8:11 pm:

Quinn hammers and shakes business failures.

Not one company of Rauber cited.

    Charles Thomas - pensions?

LOVE Charkes Thomas on followup to job creation!

    Awe-Some!

  16. - Grandson of Man - Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 8:14 pm:

Willy’s right. Rauner talked about hundreds of GTCR-owned companies, then defaulted again to the TRS and government union bosses’ members pensions.

  17. - Oswego Willy - Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 8:14 pm:

    Quinn goes gift cards.

  18. - Grandson of Man - Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 8:15 pm:

Rauner can’t name one successful company, not one, except for GUV’MINT UNION BOSS WORKERS’ PENSIONS!

  19. - Oswego Willy - Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 8:16 pm:

They are after Rauner facade - now on Education funding. Refuses to talk monies, falls back to donated monies

  20. - Mighty M. Mouse - Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 8:16 pm:

Quinn’s answers are very specific and responsive.

Rauner is such a clever, dangerous person.

You can’t believe anything he says. Much worse than Blago.

  21. - Kasich Walker, Jr. - Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 8:16 pm:

Education is the key to the American dream for the investment community and banks — get those kids to take out loans at high rates with gov’t guaranteed payback. Make the parents co-sign, too.

  22. - Oswego Willy - Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 8:17 pm:

Quinn goes back to where Rauner numbers fail in Ed funding.

  23. - PoolGuy - Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 8:17 pm:

asked 3 times and still cannot name one successful business that created jobs…. go to website… amazing Bruce.

  24. - Jeepster - Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 8:18 pm:

It’s amazing that Rauner can’t name 1 job he has created.

  25. - Oswego Willy - Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 8:19 pm:

Where do you intend to find funding Rauner?

Goes corruption and growth. No cuts no specifics.

Rauner failing on facts to direct Questions, Quinn grasping more factual examples.

Quinn - 401K? No, talks reforms and paying pensions.

  26. - Kasich Walker, Jr. - Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 8:20 pm:

Rauner repeats — We have a massive economic failure in Illinois, then says Quinn is running on scare tactics.

  27. - Oswego Willy - Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 8:21 pm:

Rauner complains that Quinn is making up budget numbers.

Rauner has zero plan married to numbers.

    Quinn - min. Wage

    Rauner - property taxes

  28. - Formerly Known As... - Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 8:21 pm:

Quinn talking about the importance of investing in public health.

    Oh, the hypocrisy.

  29. - Mighty M. Mouse - Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 8:22 pm:

Quinn is behaving amazing decently. Rauner doesn’t deserve it.

Quinn is taking the high road and Rauner is saying that Quinn is corrupt. What a venal monster!

  30. - Oswego Willy - Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 8:22 pm:

Quinn answers why. $6 billion behind in bills, Quinn goes Rauner tax.

Rauner keeps tired “Quinn failing”. No answer, talking points on Quinn being faikure

  31. - PoolGuy - Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 8:24 pm:

all i hear from Rauner is failure, failure, failure. no direct answers to anything

  32. - Formerly Known As... - Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 8:24 pm:

Magers asks about bill backlog. Quinn says he’s proud of the progress made.

  33. - Oswego Willy - Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 8:24 pm:

Rauner - right to work? Local control, sure, not a priority.

    Rauner never answers.

    Quinn hammers min. wage.

  34. - Mighty M. Mouse - Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 8:24 pm:

RAuner says Quinn is making up false attacks while Quinn is focusing on the positive.

  35. - Dizzy Cow - Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 8:25 pm:

Somehow Quinn is laying out a “clear” “cogent” vision. (It’s all relative)

Rauner just keeps pouring out the republican talking points that haven’t worked in Illinois since I don’t know when.

  36. - Precinct Captain - Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 8:25 pm:

Bruce Rauner cannot name a single company that created and did not outsource or cut jobs. This is definitely a Rick Perry “oops” moment, like one of the tweets says.

  37. - Oswego Willy - Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 8:26 pm:

Thomas - right to work zones?

    Thomas hammering weak understanding

    Quinn attacks on collective bargaining.

Charles Thomas has no time for talking points from either.

  38. - Oswego Willy - Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 8:27 pm:

    Not one company.

Rauner can’t name a single one.

  39. - Mighty M. Mouse - Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 8:27 pm:

Quinn is doing much better than last time. He seems even sharper, though he was always pretty sharp, and he clearly seems more energetic.

  40. - Arthur Andersen - Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 8:28 pm:

    BINGO!

  41. - Oswego Willy - Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 8:29 pm:

Laura Washington with a great question to Governor Quinn about why he has not taken action on raising the minimum wage if he cares so much about the subject.

Quinn dodges and says Rauner wants to cut the minimum wage.

Rauner says Quinn has been a failure on the minimum wage. Could have led on the issue if he wanted to, but he failed.

  43. - Just Me - Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 8:30 pm:

    BINGO! What do I win?

  44. - PoolGuy - Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 8:30 pm:

    Rauner goes endorsements, big time

  46. - PoolGuy - Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 8:32 pm:

now Bruce is going to do redistricting on his own too? as Governor he can do that? lol

  47. - Mighty M. Mouse - Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 8:32 pm:

Rauner calling somebody else a “phony”!

    Several times, no less.

What entertainment value! It doesn’t get any better than this.

Now Quinn is FINALLY pointing out that Rauner is a name caller.

Rauner says we need leadership, but not from a facist.

  48. - Oswego Willy - Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 8:32 pm:

Quinn goes 51 no AA hires, Rauner hits back hard on Quinn

  49. - Kasich Walker, Jr. - Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 8:33 pm:

There’s a reason newspapers and the IL Chamber of Commerce endorsed Rauner — it’s the same reason subscriptions and ad revenues are down for those newspapers & the Chambers of Commerce serve as lobbyists for national conglomerates rather than local small businesses.

  50. - Oswego Willy - Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 8:34 pm:

Quinn brings it back, rehabs himself

  51. - Formerly Known As... - Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 8:34 pm:

Rauner says Quinn has taken the African American vote for granted.

Also says he will ask Stephanie Neely to be a part of his administration.

  52. - Mighty M. Mouse - Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 8:34 pm:

I wonder what Stephanie Neely is gonna say after the debate.

Will she slam the door on Rauner or keep the door open?

  53. - Oswego Willy - Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 8:36 pm:

Rauner is buzz word happy, goes on tangent of “”sweetheart deals” …

  54. - Raymond - Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 8:39 pm:

So how is that Rauner managed to get to the left of Quinn on state pensions? This is the same guy who wanted to nuke the whole system back in the primary.

  55. - Mighty M. Mouse - Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 8:39 pm:

Rauner says Quinn is avoiding the question when Rauner wants to avoid the question. It’s a clear pattern.

He always accuses Quinn of all the dirty, devious underhanded things that he himself is doing.

I think he a classic sub-clinical psychopath, but whatever he is he’s a classic, that’s for sure!

  56. - Formerly Known As... - Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 8:39 pm:

Rauner says he does not support moratorium on charter schools. Mentions a study by some group that per pupil funding has decreased under Quinn.

Quinn says he does support moratorium, need to == get to the bottom == of how effective they are.

  57. - Oswego Willy - Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 8:41 pm:

Education back and forth, both leading with some refuted “facts”

Thomas - AA community jobs. Halts Quinn, “How does that relate?”

  58. - Formerly Known As... - Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 8:43 pm:

== So how is that Rauner managed to get to the left of Quinn on state pensions? This is the same guy who wanted to nuke the whole system back in the primary. ==

I was just asking myself the same thing.

== Not fair == to cut pensions of retired people or those already in the system? Followed by Quinn’s answer defending the pension cuts?

    Twilight Zone stuff.

  59. - Oswego Willy - Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 8:43 pm:

    Rauner falls back on monies.

    “I care” = monies donated

  60. - Just Me - Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 8:43 pm:

I don’t get why Rauner points out that the reason he outsourced Illinois jobs is because Illinois taxes are too high. Is it because he doesn’t want to repeat the accusation?

  61. - Kasich Walker, Jr. - Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 8:44 pm:

Quinn will repeatedly attack Rauner’s record on layoffs, yet he won’t touch the ideology that Rauner, the GOP, and the nationalism embraced by — the idea that we are only having problems because of leadership failure and the inability to outperform all the others — exclusion.

  62. - Oswego Willy - Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 8:44 pm:

Quinn talks about AA in his Administration.

  63. - Mighty M. Mouse - Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 8:45 pm:

Neither one of them can make a significant dent in jobs or the economy. What a waste of time talking about it.

  65. - Formerly Known As... - Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 8:47 pm:

Good answer by Rauner. == Lack of opportunity == and no future is big part of crime, not just guns.

  66. - regular democrat - Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 8:48 pm:

This has not been a good night for Rauner that can’t be debated

  67. - Mighty M. Mouse - Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 8:49 pm:

Rauner is a classic demagogue, that’s one kind of classic he is. He’s a classic weasel. And he’s a classic danger to society, too.

  68. - PoolGuy - Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 8:49 pm:

  69. - Oswego Willy - Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 8:50 pm:

Crime and jobs, “Quinn is a failure” “Rauner is rich”

    Ugh.

  70. - Formerly Known As... - Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 8:50 pm:

Quinn was fine until he voluntarily brought up his unfunded property tax rebate idea again.

    Rauner budgeting type tactics. Unbelievable.

These guys are one and the same in so many ways as candidates.

  71. - Mighty M. Mouse - Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 8:50 pm:

Quinn refuses to give Rauner an income tax sound-bite he can use in an ad.

Nicely done, and a lot better than last time.

  72. - Oswego Willy - Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 8:52 pm:

    Attention state workers;

    Rauner thinks you’re cronies.

    Congratulations

  73. - Raymond - Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 8:54 pm:

Quinn needs to figure out how to get Stephanie Neely into a TV spot - endorsing and lauding him, and scolding Rauner.

  74. - Mike - Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 8:54 pm:

“Issues that really matter,” Rauner? Because the marriage of LGBT individuals don’t matter? Wow.

  75. - Oswego Willy - Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 8:54 pm:

Rauner gets to fork in the road to get to “Quinn is a failure”

SSM - Rauner wants pivot to jobs, education, etc.

SSM - Quinn goes to champion, hits Nursing homes.

  76. - Mighty M. Mouse - Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 8:55 pm:

What is Rauner saying that Quinn has to do with driver’s licenses?

FakeRauner: “It’s corruption, it’s wrong, and whatever it is that I’m saying, it’s not true and that’s one thing you can depend on, for sure!”

  77. - Grandson of Man - Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 8:55 pm:

How will Rauner’s strong support of SSM play with social conservatives? Will that turn off any number of socially conservative GOP voters?

  78. - Oswego Willy - Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 8:56 pm:

    Quinn & MJM.

    Charles Thomas is outstanding.

Calls out Rauner on Ads against Leaders.

  79. - Mighty M. Mouse - Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 8:58 pm:

When did the President say that Pat Quinn is irrelevant?

Rauner will say, and make-up, ANYTHING!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  80. - Formerly Known As... - Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 9:00 pm:

== What is Rauner saying that Quinn has to do with driver’s licenses? ==

iirc, the moderator asked a question about the lack of resources and processing time for these licenses if it is something he supports. Rauner used that as a point in his response as another example of Quinn’s == failure == to lead, etc

My feed cut out during a brief part of the question, but that was what I caught.

  81. - Mighty M. Mouse - Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 9:00 pm:

Rauner is a sociopath, but how can Quinn bear to shake his hand. It must really make him sick.

Well, I guess it’s not gonna be on TV this time.

    Cut to black.

  82. - Oswego Willy - Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 9:01 pm:

Quinn - very good close, making his case.

Rauner - closes negative. Talking points. Not one company success. Corruption.

  83. - Cabildero - Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 9:02 pm:

Anyone bother to count how many times Rauner said failure?

  84. - the Other Anonymous - Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 9:03 pm:

“I love Illinois. This is three of my nine homes.”

There, fixed it for you, Mr. Rauner.

  85. - redscarecrow - Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 9:05 pm:

The winner: Moot. Nothing groundbreaking happened. The narrative is set, barring last minute craziness, which seems unlikely.

The election is over. It just doesn’t know it yet.

  86. - Oswego Willy - Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 9:05 pm:

    Quinn won.

    “Why?”

You’re in business for decades and still can’t directly nabe one company in a debate. You lose.

    Pathetic.

  87. - J.Nolan - Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 9:06 pm:

president of the senate…not the president. context, context, context. too busy hyperventalating over rauners sociopathic tendencies? geez…

  88. - James Knell - Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 9:06 pm:

Does anyone working in education believe Rauner will increase funding? Are wolves vegetarians?

  89. - Formerly Known As... - Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 9:07 pm:

    What a terrible == debate == overall.

It is like watching two children try to squeeze in as many insults as possible before time runs out. Similar responses in all 3 debates, just progressively nastier each time.

Very few new ideas from either candidate and very little in the way of new questions from the moderators, though Thomas gets an A for effort.

  90. - Arthur Andersen - Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 9:07 pm:

I can go a long time without hearing “savage cuts” or failure” again.

Rauner camp: “Pat Quinn’s message to the voters tonight was clear – he’s planning to raise your taxes in just over two weeks, even if he loses. … The only way to stop Pat Quinn’s massive tax increase is to get out and vote for Bruce Rauner.”

Is anyone proofreading this? They must still be on the debate floor trying to pick up the pieces of what remains of Rauner’s campaign…

Rich mentioned earlier that viewership is down for this debate.

This was the final and most important debate, and people on both sides are tuning out instead of tuning in. It is no wonder why.

  94. - Illinoise - Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 9:10 pm:

    Weird copy and paste problem…

  95. - SICK OF IT - Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 9:12 pm:

If Quinn says one more time that Rauner is a billionaire I will scream…….WHO CARES!!!! Let’s talk issues Pat Quinn……so ineffective and useless.

  96. - Valerie F. Leonard - Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 9:12 pm:

Quinn wins again. While he deflected some questions, he did a much better job of providing concrete responses. Rauner still stutters when asked to expound on his record of African American hiring and listing his cadre of African American advisors. Rauner also pinned Rahm’s failure on crime and staffing the police force on the Governor.

  97. - Responsa - Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 9:14 pm:

This was worst of the three debates. For both of them. No winner. They kept repeating themselves. Talking too fast. Predictable and overused taunts. What a choice we have. Rauner’s comments on education and charter schools were his strength. Originally Quinn’s comment about lack of AAs in executive levels at Rauner companies was good question. When he harangued on it the fifth and sixth time, tho, it completely lost its power because Quinn just looked like a wild eyed bully.

  98. - Arthur Andersen - Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 9:16 pm:

Upon further review, I believe I “Bingoed” on 2 cards! Do I win 2 $20 gift cards from Bruce?

I don’t know that Quinn won, but Rauner clearly lost when he couldn’t name one company that was a winner. Not like that question wasn’t forseeable, too.

  99. - Valerie F. Leonard - Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 9:17 pm:

Rauner touted all the newspaper endorsements he got. Given the dynamics of the Sun-Times endorsement and sidelining McKinney, I can’t help but wonder how many arms were twisted at news outlets all around the state to accomplish this.

  104. - Valerie F. Leonard - Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 9:25 pm:

Even Rauner doesn’t believe Quinn will lose. When he asked Quinn to promise not to permanently raise income taxes during the lame duck session after he loses the election, he came across as less than confident.

That’s a good one. Quinn on the stage with Rauner and Quinn is a bully! I could always use a good laugh!

I knew I forgot this, but thanks for reminding me. If Rauner is a classic anything, he is a CLASSIC bully.

No wonder he and Rahm get along so well.

As for the repetition, I’m sure Rauner didn’t like Quinn reminding the AA voters 5-6 times at least just as much, if not a lot more, than you.

It’s not the kind of thing you want repeated excessively when you want AAs to vote for you, unless you’re Quinn. Then, of course, you can’t say it enough.

Was tonight’s debate only broadcast in Chicagoland? Is that why chameleon Rauner suddenly portrayed himself as a social liberal tonight?

  112. - Illannoyed - Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 9:38 pm:

The instant temptation for some is to think that Rauner committed a gaffe when he didn’t name a company. What it showed me is that the Rauner campaign studied the Romney campaign and knew better than to take the bait. If Rauner highlights a particular company as a success, the Quinn campaign looks for anything that might portray the company in a bad light and runs an ad with Rauner praising the company in his own voice followed by a negative narrative about whatever bad thing they believe happened with the company. Better to let partisans make an issue out of his not identifying a particular company. Voters won’t care. Most weren’t watching or listening anyway, but would probably see some kind of ad had he answered the question with specifics. Rauner just sidestepped a potential late game landmine.

If that’s what helps you sleep at night.

  114. - PoolGuy - Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 9:46 pm:

Illannoyed - Rauner has been talking for almost 2 years about how great he is at running successful businesses, but the reason he can’t name even one is because he is afraid Quinn will run a negative ad? I’m not buying that excuse, sorry.

  115. - Grandson of Man - Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 9:47 pm:

“The instant temptation for some is to think that Rauner committed a gaffe when he didn’t name a company.”

I don’t see how it’s not a gaffe. Rauner has been running as someone who is successful in everything he does and knows how to create jobs. He could not name one company that created jobs, not one, except for those socialistic-y public worker pensions that belong to government union bosses’ members.

  116. - Economic Justice - Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 9:50 pm:

Quinn won by talking with and for the most voters, on more issues that they care about. Simply put, more people relate to him and his positions than the other guy. (And Quinn’s math skills are better.) Despite Rauner’s double-backflip out of the primary into born-again-moderate talking points, his bullying emotionless delivery still comes across as just another robotic Republican tape recorder looping narrow talking points to a wealthy conservative crowd at a north shore country club luncheon. That tends not to win in Illinois; Just like trickle down economics tends not to work - and independent voters sense that, too.

  117. - Illannoyed - Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 9:57 pm:

Clearly, the man could easily name a company that he believes to be a success. For it to be a “gaffe,” you’d have to believe that HE doesn’t believe any of his companies have been successful, or that he suddenly drew a blank and couldn’t remember a single company. Not a chance. I understand that some commenters here don’t like him and instantly assume the worst about his motives and career. That’s fine. But he’s not stupid. He sidestepped the question by doing what candidates frequently do when they want to generalize about an issue. They reference a website where you can find more information. Candidates do that all the time. An example of a gaffe would be “let me name three of my most successful companies…company one, company two…and, uh, ooops.” That would be a full-on Perry.

  118. - PoolGuy - Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 10:00 pm:

but clearly he didn’t name any company. and just to be clear, i am just as unhappy as the non answers from Quinn as well. but this one stuck out the most tonight for me.

  119. - Wordslinger - Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 10:03 pm:

Not one company after a life in biz and more than a year campaigning as a successful businessman?

Didn’t watch, but is that for real? How could it be?

  120. - Grandson of Man - Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 10:07 pm:

“I understand that some commenters here don’t like him”

As far as I’m concerned, Rauner doesn’t like people like me, so I react accordingly. I don’t go out of my way to dislike anyone, but try being on the other end of demonization and see how it feels. What makes it worse is that he trots out government workers’ pensions as a success when it benefits him, yet he trashed them and called them a “financial tumor.”

So Rauner’s comfortable with using people–trashing them when he needs to and holding them up as shining examples of success at other times, again, as needed.

Again, I’m of the opinion that Rauner blew it when he couldn’t mention one job that his companies created, except for government pensions. Isn’t that his forte, job creation? How do you not answer that? That’s like asking Barry Bonds if he ever hit a home run.

    Bruce,
You made $60 million last year as a business man. You want me to believe that decreasing taxes for businesses an the wealthy will create jobs. Ok. How? When? Just 1 example please.

  123. - Responsa - Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 10:22 pm:

==As for the repetition, I’m sure Rauner didn’t like Quinn reminding the AA voters 5-6 times at least just as much, if not a lot more, than you.==

I don’t care at all how Quinn chose to use his time and i thought they both did poorly tonight. But my comment noted that when debate time is tight and viewership is low, it’s generally considered wise to get your zinger in once or twice (not six times) and capture the reaction to it for use in your next negative ad– and then move on to a new topic or line of attack in hopes of trapping the opponent on something else, too. Quinn missed some opportunities because he kept rewinding the same tape over and over with ever increasing heat but no additional light.

  127. - Illinoise - Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 11:01 pm:

It’s not just that he couldn’t name one company ( although I agree he intentionally sidestepped that one). Rauner is saying that in order to increase jobs you need to create a business friendly environment. He has been a successful business man (he mentioned it once or twice) and yet he can’t point to any job growth as a result of that success. Why should a voter place their bet on one successful businessman who couldn’t point to any specific job growth in Illinois, and his plan to spread that brand of “success”?

  128. - crazybleedingheart - Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 11:02 pm:

Rauner’s dad was a lawyer who became a Senior VP at Motorola. Rauner said he never inherited a nickel.

Hypothesis 1: his dad was similarly bad with numbers
Hypothesis 2: his dad didn’t like him, either

  129. - Norseman - Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 11:02 pm:

ONE COMPANY - Geez, anybody looking for a job knows to think of at least one success story to put in the resume or prepare for the interview. The fact that he can’t name one company really shows his main focus in business is on the $ soaked from the companies and not job growth.

  130. - walker - Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 11:11 pm:

Didn’t watch it either. But thought reading comments “If only Rauner’s campaign had listened to Wordslinger two months ago!” He should have had his best business success story in his pocket and ready to go.

  131. - Original Rambler - Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 11:32 pm:

Just finished watching. Quinn won the first half easy. Can’t believe Rauner didn’t have an answer for that one company question. Second half was probably a tie. Rauner did much better attacking Quinn. Quinn seemed to stay the course though. Quinn should have answered that Yes or No question with a Yes or No and then ramble from there. Rauner sounds like a galoot (not that he is) while Quinn looks constipated up there. Thomas had the best questions. Thought Rauner scored some good points on the AA questions while Quinn just danced.

  132. - Illinoisvoter - Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 11:50 pm:

Either Mr Rauner doesn’t play well with others
or bother with details. Most Chicago
Public School student’s don’t attend middle
school. Maybe his mentoring program for at
risk communities is for the North Shore?

  133. - Adlai - Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 11:51 pm:

==Most weren’t watching or listening anyway, but would probably see some kind of ad had he answered the question with specifics.==

So, better for them to see an ad where he can’t name a single company? ‘Cause that’s what we’re going to get now!

“or it to be a “gaffe,” you’d have to believe that HE doesn’t believe any of his companies have been successful, or that he suddenly drew a blank and couldn’t remember a single company.”

That’s a weirdly narrow definition of “gaffe”.

Here’s what is most likely: Rauner simply realizes that those companies he created/invested in/advised/whatever were *never intended* to create jobs, or raise wages, or empower workers, or anything else like that. They were intended to enrich investors. And that’s fine, there is a place for that in society, but it’s neither what Rauner has been promising nor what voters want to hear. They may well have been very successful at it, but it’s not what we need in a Governor. Rauner, to his credit, recognized that, but since it basically implodes the entire rationale of his candidacy (besides “I’m Not Pat Quinn”), he couldn’t really say anything.

  134. - Reality Check - Monday, Oct 20, 14 @ 11:54 pm:

THIS: “those companies he created/invested in/advised/whatever were *never intended* to create jobs, or raise wages, or empower workers, or anything else like that. They were intended to enrich investors.”

  135. - WindyCity - Tuesday, Oct 21, 14 @ 2:41 am:

Quinn was stellar tonight in many ways. Arguably the most notable was him calling out Rauner for all the name calling (”phony” and “failure” were among the Rauner favorites), which almost serves as a timeout for viewers while the man in charge scolds the immature student. What it also did, at least for me, is connect more dots to the verbal threats Rauner was accused of levying against the female staffer. Ultimately, along with the outsourcing of American jobs, the jailed execs, the nursing home scandals and the abolishment of the minimum wage, it all ties up in a not-so-pretty bow. I pray people get it on Nov. 4.
