* From Andy Stone at Facebook…

In the hotly contested Illinois governor’s race, both Governor Pat Quinn and challenger Bruce Rauner have agreed to hold Facebook Q&As and answer questions directly from the voters. Each Q&A will happen on WLS-TV/ABC7Chicago’s Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/abc7chicago.

Gov. Quinn will hold his Facebook Q&A on Wednesday, October 29, at 8 p.m. CT / 9 p.m. ET.

Bruce Rauner will hold his Facebook Q&A on Thursday, October 30 at 8 p.m. CT / 9 p.m. ET.

Using Facebook’s Q&A tool, people from across Illinois will have the opportunity to ask a question of Governor Pat Quinn and challenger Bruce Rauner and watch the conversation play out in real time.

* Meanwhile WTTW is planning to use social media to enhance its US Senate debate coverage tonight. From Jay Smith, Supervising Producer, Chicago Tonight…

Hi Rich,

I hope you are well. I wanted to let you know that our forum with Dick Durbin and Jim Oberweis will be live streamed on our web site [tonight.] It will also be aired on Public TV and Radio stations statewide, including:

TV: WQPT – Quad Cities, WSIU – Carbondale, WILL – Champaign/Urbana, WTVP – Peoria, WEIU- Charleston

Radio: WBEZ - Chicago, WVIK – Quad Cities, Tri States Public Radio – Macomb, WGLT- Normal, WSIU – Carbondale, WNIU – Dekalb/Rockford, WUIS – Springfield, WCBU – Peoria.

We also will have a twitter stream widget on our web site, pulling in selected live tweeted commentary. Let me know if you’re going to be live tweeting and we can pull you in to that tool. We are also experimenting with using some Twitter content during the program.

Take care,
Jay

I think it’s cool. And it’s almost a “must do” for both candidates.

  4. - Casual Observer - Wednesday, Oct 29, 14 @ 4:34 pm:

I’m anxious to see if the FB format gets the candidates off of their talking points. The debate formats have not been successful at all in that regard, IMO.

  5. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Oct 29, 14 @ 4:35 pm:

I’m not on The Facebook, and I think what I fear is that questions are going to gin up paranoia of both Quinnsters and Raunerites, fearing a hijacking(?)

But that’s my tin foil hat talking.

To the WTTW Debate, I am very excited. I can’t wait to see what Oberweis will say next. That ain’t snark.

  6. - Wordslinger - Wednesday, Oct 29, 14 @ 4:49 pm:

Will Quinn have to type his own answers? Will be interesting to see if that cuts down the number of go-to stump phrases.

The was a very nice thing for Oberweis to say:

Dick Durbin, a.k.a. Illinois’ “Grandmaster DD”.

Was that Oberweis’ unconscious way of conceding?

  43. - Casual Observer - Wednesday, Oct 29, 14 @ 8:21 pm:

The Facebook with Quinn is disappointing. I should have known. Cherry pick questions and insert canned answers.

    Willie, thanks for the work.

What was the NFL anti-trust all about?

I’d advise Obie just to say no to drilling for oil in Lake Michigan.

  48. - Casual Observer - Wednesday, Oct 29, 14 @ 9:18 pm:

What was the NFL trust all about?

    Money.

  49. - Casual Observer - Wednesday, Oct 29, 14 @ 9:21 pm:

    Anti-trust

  50. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Oct 29, 14 @ 9:28 pm:

    ===What was the NFL anti-trust all about?===

It was a pretty interesting spin on the NFL and their anti-trust status & the legal woes of the players, domestic abuse.

    Oberweis discussed looking at it…

But Durbin seemed more prepared. Durbin discussed MLB and other sports and that their status is so different when compared and that the lobbyists for the NFL for example, had better language.

Very thoughtful and insightful to preparation and that Durbin got in the weeds, wonky on the NFL status, and then also talked about watching games differently - concussions.

Good insightful question by Ponce to see if tmi g points or homework will lead the answers.

  51. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Oct 29, 14 @ 9:31 pm:

“…to see if they go talking points…”

    Thanks - Wirdslinger - and - MMM - too.

  52. - Cheswick - Wednesday, Oct 29, 14 @ 10:18 pm:

    Excellent work, Willy. Thank you.

I just read the ABC7 facebook Q&A with Quinn — after it was over. It was all talking points, unfortunately.

And then someone posted a photo of a noose with an invitation to put it on. Good grief.

  53. - Conservative Republican - Thursday, Oct 30, 14 @ 8:06 am:

I watched the debate live. I thought that putting twitter posts up on the screen was annoying and distracting. I ignored most of them. Some were juvenile snark. Others were self-promotion by media types. Almost all were simply repetition of what the candidate said. Of course, if you were ADD it was heaven. WTTW, don’t do this again.
