Edgar, Kinzinger backing Bush

Wednesday, Sep 23, 2015 - Posted by Rich Miller

* Tribune

Republican presidential hopeful Jeb Bush has won the backing of two key Illinoisans: former Gov. Jim Edgar and U.S. Rep. Adam Kinzinger, the Tribune has learned. The two will be state chairmen for Bush’s White House run. Bush was tops in Illinois presidential fundraising last month.

* Meanwhile

State Rep. Edward Acevedo (D-Chicago) is angry with GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump and what Acevedo called “derogatory comments” towards women and Latinos. Tuesday, the ten-term lawmakers introduced a House resolution calling on the RNC to denounce Trump and “distance themselves from him in the future.”

Acevedo’s resolution says “Donald Trump has repeatedly made misogynistic, sexist, and derogatory comments towards women; and Donald Trump has repeatedly made offensive and abhorrent comments towards people of Latino descent, Mexican immigrants, and Asians ..”

If the resolution passes, Acevedo wants copies of the resolution sent to the Republican congressional leaders, RNC Chairman Rheince Priebus and the GOP members of the Illinois delegation.

It seems like, in the last 2 or 3 years, Jim Edgar just can’t get it right. Rubio, Kasich, Graham, Pataki… there are decent republicans to endorse. But nope, we’re going to endorse the guy that is going to carry on the horrible policies of the president before this one. No thanks, Jim. No thanks.

  2. - flea - Wednesday, Sep 23, 15 @ 9:56 am:

Good reason not to vote for him.

  3. - BIG R. Ph. - Wednesday, Sep 23, 15 @ 10:03 am:

Yawn. And in other news…water is wet

  4. - Louis G. Atsaves - Wednesday, Sep 23, 15 @ 10:03 am:

As a Republican, I get so confused sometimes. Is Donald Trump a Republican?

  5. - Team Sleep - Wednesday, Sep 23, 15 @ 10:05 am:

I could care less about Edgar’s involvement. But color me surprised that Kinzinger is backing him. He’s gotten a lot of backlash on his Facebook pages over that. I know that’s not scientific, but people aren’t buying it.

  6. - RetiredStateEmployee - Wednesday, Sep 23, 15 @ 10:07 am:

Donald Trump is a product of Republicans. They have been promoting these ideas for years behind doublespeak and code words. Just look at the surveys of what Republican voters believe. The Donald just says it like it is. Does that make him a Republican?

  7. - A guy - Wednesday, Sep 23, 15 @ 10:13 am:

The party favors have started to be distributed and accordingly the noise has started. By the time this campaign of 50 separate primary elections gets to Illinois, we’ll be looking at vastly different landscape than we see today. Jeb is now +2 in Illinois. There’s plenty more where they came from and we’ll see all kinds of who’s with who in the weeks to come.

    To Rep. Acevedo, got it.

  8. - Wordslinger - Wednesday, Sep 23, 15 @ 10:13 am:

    Big win for Bush.

Wonder which way Ricketts and Uiehlein will bounce now that Gov. Unintimadated has packed it in.

  9. - Anonymous - Wednesday, Sep 23, 15 @ 10:18 am:

Says more about Edgar and Kinzinger than it does about Bush.

    I’ll pass on all 3.

  10. - William - Wednesday, Sep 23, 15 @ 10:20 am:

    Acevedo should stop embarrassing himself.

  11. - Wordslinger - Wednesday, Sep 23, 15 @ 10:22 am:

    – Is Donald Trump a Republican?–

Perhaps you should ask the third of likely GOP voters who think he’s the best one.

But if he’s not, it sure would be swell if some “real Republicans” would step up and denounce his monstrously immoral “immigration plan.”

You know, the one that would require the creation of a militarized police state, cost hundreds of millions, destroy the American economy and still not work?

It would be nice if some “real Republicans” could clear their throats, locate their Testicular Virility and say something about that.

  12. - Commonsense in Illinois - Wednesday, Sep 23, 15 @ 10:42 am:

So it took Rep. Acevado how long to become incensed?

  13. - DuPage - Wednesday, Sep 23, 15 @ 10:43 am:

Edgar supported Rauner. I bet he has some remorse over that.

  14. - Anon221 - Wednesday, Sep 23, 15 @ 10:47 am:

Is Trump a Republican? You can ask the same of Rauner…

My answer- only when it suits him and is profitable.

  15. - Anonymous - Wednesday, Sep 23, 15 @ 10:53 am:

Will Jeb! still be in the race by the time we get to vote in Illinois? He really looks like his heart isn’t in this one. Low energy indeed.

Btw, does anyone else think Jeb!’s strategy is reminiscent of Jack! Ryan’s? Lol.

  16. - Anonymous - Wednesday, Sep 23, 15 @ 10:55 am:

Jim Edgar loves horse racing. I’ll bet his wife hates to hear him say he’s off to the track……she’ll have to downsize the budget again.

  17. - anon - Wednesday, Sep 23, 15 @ 11:01 am:

Ducky, you meant the horrible policies of the current prez, didn’t you?

  18. - 47th Ward - Wednesday, Sep 23, 15 @ 11:01 am:

    That’s mine at 10:53.

  19. - JB - Wednesday, Sep 23, 15 @ 11:03 am:

Does endorsements such as Edgar and Kinsinger or newspaper endorsements for that matter, carry much weight I don’t think so

  20. - VanillaMan - Wednesday, Sep 23, 15 @ 11:06 am:

Edgar supported Rauner. I bet he has some remorse over that.

LOL - we don’t ask him because we don’t want him to have another coronary.

  21. - VanillaMan - Wednesday, Sep 23, 15 @ 11:10 am:

I’m not for Bush, but we’re talking Edgar and Jim believes that government should be a useful servant for all and values experience.

  22. - A Jack - Wednesday, Sep 23, 15 @ 11:11 am:

Edgar has tried to talk some sense to the Governor. So let’s give him that.

As much as I dislike Trump, at least he isn’t bashing unions.

Although scapegoating Latin Americans is way over the top. I used to love going down to Tijuana and was neither raped nor robbed on any of my trips. However, my fellow Americans have stolen from me on several occasions.

  23. - walker - Wednesday, Sep 23, 15 @ 11:13 am:

Has Rauner changed his perspective on Scott Walker? He seemed to tout him as an example of both how to run a state, and how to be considered a presidential front runner.

  24. - History Prof - Wednesday, Sep 23, 15 @ 11:23 am:

There is a long history in Illinois and elsewhere of using state-level resolutions about national politcal figures as a way of defining party lines, enforcing party orthodoxy, or forcing the opposition to declare itself before they know which way the winds will finally blow. The Whigs coaxed a number of Assemblymen out of the Democratic Party by forcing them to vote on what they thought of Martin Van Buren.

I think it might be a smart move for Democrats to put such resolutions on the floor. But I’m not a political hand. It certainly would not be untoward or illegitimate.

  25. - Amalia - Wednesday, Sep 23, 15 @ 11:33 am:

Loving Stephen Colbert’s “Hunger Games” take on the departure of Scott Walker from the race. welcome this kind of coverage with each departing candidate.

  27. - A guy - Wednesday, Sep 23, 15 @ 11:59 am:

Walker and Bush have been aggressively pursuing delegates here (more so than most of the others). From what I can see, now that Walker has suspended, many of those efforts seem to be combining to move some of the Walker committed folks to Bush. At least in the suburbs.

  28. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Sep 23, 15 @ 12:24 pm:

It goes back to 60 and 30, I believe, on January 1…

  29. - Ducky LaMoore - Wednesday, Sep 23, 15 @ 12:31 pm:

===Ducky, you meant the horrible policies of the current prez, didn’t you? ===

Of course I did, I mean… The guy ended two wars, made health insurance available to everyone, and got the country through a really bad recession. He stinks, he’s a loser. Obviously………………..

  30. - Strangerthings - Wednesday, Sep 23, 15 @ 1:02 pm:

That Acevedo is a character. I can’t help but think that it’s a little bit of a waste of time and tax dollars to care so much about empty words from a sideshow character just saying. Seems his priorities are out of order.

  31. - Steve Schnorf - Wednesday, Sep 23, 15 @ 1:35 pm:

Still a lot of Edgar envy on here I see

  32. - Apocalypse Now - Wednesday, Sep 23, 15 @ 1:42 pm:

My goodness. Who actually listens to Edgar, much less pay attention to what he says?

  33. - Wordslinger - Wednesday, Sep 23, 15 @ 1:57 pm:

    – who actually listens to Edgar…–

AN, certainly not a a big-brain responsible citizen like yourself.

But, then again, you’re the guy who earlier today said, regarding the skyrocketing deficit and collapsing social service infrastructure, “seems to be working fine.”

    Misanthrope.

  34. - VoterVaultR - Wednesday, Sep 23, 15 @ 1:58 pm:

    I’m
Voting for Trump - I am tired of appeasement RINO’s.

  35. - Jack Stephens - Wednesday, Sep 23, 15 @ 3:17 pm:

Do they mean Jeb “Government Regulation Of Your Personal Life” Bush?

  36. - Last Bull Moose - Wednesday, Sep 23, 15 @ 5:26 pm:

The Bush team is great at institutional politics. Jeb seems unable to give a clear and concise answer to anticipated questions. This flaw may sink him.

A conservative friend of mine believes Trump is a false flag operation designed to help Hillary. Would check him for tinfoil, but Trump is helping her more than the Republican party.

  37. - Strangerthings - Wednesday, Sep 23, 15 @ 5:39 pm:

By the way let’s not jump off the cliff of judging bush by assuming he is exactly like his brother. Anyone here who has sI blinds should know better. Siblings can grow up to be much different. So let’s not be ignorant and assume he would be like his brother. So tired of hearing the comparisons everywhere I turn. I will make that the end of my rant

  38. - Almost the Weekend - Wednesday, Sep 23, 15 @ 9:12 pm:

Kinzinger found a route to the Chicago Republican money network. Smart play by him if he’s looking for higher office in the future. The problem is I don’t see how he gets there or what is open four to six years from now.
