Other peoples’ money never look so darn good!

  2. - anon - Friday, Mar 4, 16 @ 1:59 pm:

I’m no Dunkin fan, but this ad is pretty effective. It may take a whole lot of positive ads to overcome his negatives, however.

  3. - Reality Check - Friday, Mar 4, 16 @ 2:08 pm:

The first is a lame attempt to copy a tough spot hitting Dunkin, and why he’d want to remind people of that, I have no idea. Just plain dumb.

But the second spot is on another level entirely. One of the worst I have ever seen. Sloppy editing, amateurish graphics, static shot of the back of somebody’s head - and the line “He’s not a batterer”? That’s what you’re going with? Seriously?! This better be an web-only spot, in which case it’s just embarrassing. If it sees even one spin on TV then it’s political malpractice.

  4. - ILPundit - Friday, Mar 4, 16 @ 2:09 pm:

On the second ad, I’ve never seen an ad where the person defending a candidate refuses to show her face.

    That’s new.

  5. - MSIX - Friday, Mar 4, 16 @ 2:09 pm:

    Obviously not AFSCME folks.

  6. - horse w/ no name - Friday, Mar 4, 16 @ 2:11 pm:

“He’s not an abuser” is the new “I’m not a witch”

Probably going to be a similar result too

  7. - The Muse - Friday, Mar 4, 16 @ 2:13 pm:

Interested in seeing any new polls next week that show movement in either direction for this race. The top ad is good but not so sure if either of them will be effective.

  8. - There is power in a union... - Friday, Mar 4, 16 @ 2:13 pm:

“He’s a husband, father, and son.”

    Umm.. aren’t all men sons?

Is he going to say he is human too?

  9. - Reality Check - Friday, Mar 4, 16 @ 2:13 pm:

As an aside, from an irony standpoint, it’s really too bad that the first spot isn’t bankrolled by Dunkin’s sugar daddies at IllinoisGO … since it tries to score by dinging the horrendously unpopular and scandal-mired red light cameras IllinoisGO honcho Greg Goldner helped bring to Chicago.

  10. - 47th Ward - Friday, Mar 4, 16 @ 2:15 pm:

I think these ads are horrible. I also think Dunkin will be re-nominated (and re-elected).

The first one has all of the spontaneity of bored middle school kids reciting the pledge of allegiance. The second has the endorser in what looks like the witness protection program. Oof.

Still and all, it’ll be enough for Ken. I’d love to be wrong, but I just don’t see it happening.

  11. - Union Thug Gramma - Friday, Mar 4, 16 @ 2:15 pm:

Slick, but that’s about it…on the first. Love the idea that HE got all this for people…all by himmself; bless his heart.
The second? You stand up for Dunkin cuz Madigan is being mean to him and telling lies, but you won’t show your face??? I mean, if it was his gf or wife, why wouldn’t she come into the light? Very strange…unless Mr. Dunkin just paid off the money he owed on child support?

  12. - wordslinger - Friday, Mar 4, 16 @ 2:15 pm:

The first one’s fine. Women love him. I get it.

The second one, I’m not so sure. It’s certainly unusual, so there’s some stopping power.

I think the intro set-up script needs to be narrated, or at least not be red reversed out of black. I missed it the first time.

Really, now I just want to know more about who this woman is and what she’s talking about. Was that the objective?

And am I supposed to know who the three people are at the end and their significance to the story?

I get that he’s trying to answer the mailers, but I think this just raises more questions.

  13. - VanillaMan - Friday, Mar 4, 16 @ 2:15 pm:

    Both ads are completely creepy.

A man arrested for what he was arrest for, is now using women to shield him from election defeat?

What kind of man does this?

  14. - burbanite - Friday, Mar 4, 16 @ 2:15 pm:

So he restored daycare to 32000? Thought it was 100,000???? /s

The second one is actually confusing if you don’t know the story you may then want to look into it. I give it a C.

The first one is good if you don’t know what is going on. A-. Amazing how much he did all that by himself.

  15. - Louis G. Atsaves - Friday, Mar 4, 16 @ 2:17 pm:

Wow. Very impactful. Give them both an “A.” Have no idea if the content is remotely accurate or not. I’ve been steering clear of all this Dunkin stuff, but these two ads alone may blunt all the other negative ones against him.

  16. - @MisterJayEm - Friday, Mar 4, 16 @ 2:35 pm:

    “A husband, father AND son”?

    How very accomplished!

    – MrJM

  17. - Qui Tam - Friday, Mar 4, 16 @ 2:41 pm:

“He’s a husband, father, and son.”

John Shamkus has repeatedly won by touting his congressional qualifications as being a West Point grad, and the father of three sons. (and funded by the shoot, pollute, and swindle lobbies)

  18. - walker - Friday, Mar 4, 16 @ 2:41 pm:

A- for ad 1, for anyone actually interested in the details

D for ad 2. If you want to sell with a testimonial, you look earnestly into the camera.

  19. - Anonymous - Friday, Mar 4, 16 @ 4:10 pm:

    ==Umm.. aren’t all men sons?==

LOL. You beat me to it. I would suggest they add:
“and he’s still breathing.” for clarity.

  20. - A guy - Friday, Mar 4, 16 @ 4:12 pm:

They’re both good ads. Powerful, impactful. Whoever produced them knows who their audience is. I found the second one fascinating. Can’t look away from it. Watched it a couple times. Lot going on there.
Are they great? They’re not far from great. They are very, very good.

  21. - the Cardinal - Friday, Mar 4, 16 @ 4:16 pm:

Its an ugly business always has been…Real candidates with Real issues should talk about their issues. Tell me why or what you will do differently ….its unacceptable at any level to attack peoples families. Sadly thats not reality… lots of highly paid folks in this biz would be out of a campaign job real fast.
