Wagers made on World Series

Tuesday, Oct 25, 2016 - Posted by Rich Miller

* You’ve probably seen these by now…

Has anyone else ever noticed that Ricketts looks a lot like Ted Cruz?

I kid.

Kinda.

* From the Sun-Times

“How about, let’s have a wager on the World Series?” Rauner said in front of Wrigley Field, standing next to Cubs Chairman Tom Ricketts.

“If the Cleveland Indians are victorious, I’ll bet you I’ll deliver to you an extra-large Chicago-style deep dish pizza and a case of terrific Chicago-brewed microbrew beer,” Rauner said.

Rauner joked that Kasich will never get that food.

“You’re not going to get that delicious food and beer,” Rauner said. “We’re going to eat it here. Because you know what? The Cubs are going to win.”

Kasich posted his own bet on Facebook, saying he’d send Rauner “fan favorites from Cleveland” if the Indians lose.

Kinda lame, but any time that Rauner can get into a news story with a national figure who isn’t Donald Trump is a good day.

* Meanwhile…

U.S. Senators Dick Durbin (D-Cubs) and Sherrod Brown (D-Indians) made a bet today on the outcome of the 2016 World Series between the Chicago Cubs and the Cleveland Indians. If the Cubs win, Brown will bring beer from Cleveland’s Platform Brewing Company to Durbin’s office. If the Indians prevail, Durbin will deliver beer from Chicago’s Goose Island Brewery to Brown’s office.

Really? With all the great Chicago microbreweries out there Durbin picks an InBev beer?

I got time for wagerin’, motorcyclin’, criticizin’ but no time for governin’ or budgetin’.

  2. - Anonymous - Tuesday, Oct 25, 16 @ 10:39 am:

An appropriate beer choice from Lake Erie Brewing might be “Elliot Ness” since the man had ties to both Chicago and Cleveland.

Hope Kasich has to pay up.

  3. - Ron Burgundy - Tuesday, Oct 25, 16 @ 10:40 am:

For once I’d like to see a politician not engage in these bets, because they are stupid and/or they are rooting against the home team (not good politically, I understand).

  4. - MissingG - Tuesday, Oct 25, 16 @ 10:50 am:

Tom Ricketts is the Zodiac Killer

  5. - Anonymous - Tuesday, Oct 25, 16 @ 10:51 am:

Lame. How about if Cubs lose, Rainer retires? That would be a worthwhile bet.

  6. - Anonymous - Tuesday, Oct 25, 16 @ 10:52 am:

Many people give Goose a pass because it’s been around 30 years and was family owned for most of that time.

  7. - Anonymous - Tuesday, Oct 25, 16 @ 10:53 am:

Goose Island beers made in Chicago are still some of the best beers in the country. If he’s bringing 312, which is generally brewed in NY, then we’ll have a problem

  8. - wordslinger - Tuesday, Oct 25, 16 @ 10:53 am:

Gov. Kasich should have bet Gov. Rauner that he couldn’t say the name “Trump” three times without collapsing into a quivering fetal position.

  9. - Rich Miller - Tuesday, Oct 25, 16 @ 10:54 am:

===couldn’t say the name “Trump” three times ===

    Three? I’d settle for one.

    lol

  10. - Michelle Flaherty - Tuesday, Oct 25, 16 @ 10:56 am:

Rauner to Kasich: If the Indians win, I’ll send you my two favorite tools: Jim Durkin and Chris Radogno.

Kasich to Rauner: And if the Cubs win, I’ll send you mine: Shannon Jones and Ken Blackwell.

  11. - Snucka - Tuesday, Oct 25, 16 @ 10:59 am:

Yes, I did a double-take the first time I saw Ricketts at a game, because I thought it was Cruz. Looks even more like him in person!

  12. - Ducky LaMoore - Tuesday, Oct 25, 16 @ 11:07 am:

Come on, Durbin! You can get Goose Island anywhere. Should have picked Metropolitan….

  13. - Amalia - Tuesday, Oct 25, 16 @ 11:08 am:

Please just send us Sherrod Brown (and Connie Schultz too!).

  14. - Archiesmom - Tuesday, Oct 25, 16 @ 11:19 am:

Sherrod is obviously a craft beer guy. Pipeworks, Revolution, Half Acre, Moody Tongue, Lake Effect and so many others. Or just bring Sherrod over to Piece lunch, and we’ll keep him.

  15. - ChrisB - Tuesday, Oct 25, 16 @ 11:19 am:

To the Goose Island issue, I used to be solidly in the anti-macrobrew crowd, and would disdain anything made by the big guys. My neighbor, who is a beer rep, explained why it’s not necessarily a bad thing to “sell out.”

His reasoning is this: the craft brewers want to make beer. They don’t want to run a business. Any time devoted to managing the business takes time away from making beer. So they sell to InBev or MillerCoors to manage the day to day stuff, like supply chain management, distributorship, etc., and the brewers get to go back to making beer. Goose Island was actually the example he used. Now the GI guys can let InBev make the wildly popular 312, while they get to go back and make smaller, more interesting stuff.

Makes sense to me. It’s the same reason why most tech companies want to sell themselves to Google.

  19. - Just Observing - Tuesday, Oct 25, 16 @ 11:27 am:

BTW… Are these friendly wagers even legal in Illinois and Ohio? Not that I think they should be illegal, but if they are, shouldn’t the Governors follow the law?

  20. - titan - Tuesday, Oct 25, 16 @ 11:39 am:

    Goose Island? Meh.
    Pipeworks. Half Acre. Revolution. Mikerphone.
Noon Whistle. Une Annee. Begyle. Hailstorm.

I’m sure I left some out. All are better than Goose Island (excepting, perhaps the Goose rarities like Bourbon County or Lolita)

  21. - Groucho - Tuesday, Oct 25, 16 @ 11:44 am:

If I were Durbin, I would wager ov. Walker of Wisconsin for some Spotted Cow and hope the Cubs lose.

  22. - wordslinger - Tuesday, Oct 25, 16 @ 12:06 pm:

For those who like your craft brews, you can thank the Great Deregulator, Jimmy Carter, who legalized the home brews that led directly to microbrews.

At the time, there were 44 breweries in the U.S. Now there are 1,500.

  23. - Michael Westen - Tuesday, Oct 25, 16 @ 12:14 pm:

The way Rauner clumsily phrased the bet, there is a question as to whether he is betting on the World Series, or betting on whether he’ll deliver deep dish pizza to Kasich in the million-to-one chance the Cubs lose.

  24. - Anonymous - Tuesday, Oct 25, 16 @ 1:02 pm:

How about a straight trade? Even up. Send Emanuel to Cleveland and Chicago will get Mayor Jackson.

  25. - City Zen - Tuesday, Oct 25, 16 @ 1:18 pm:

How about some of Cleveland’s Great Lakes Brewing Dortmunder Gold or Edmund Fitzgerald?

  26. - wordslinger - Tuesday, Oct 25, 16 @ 1:36 pm:

Kind of in poor taste to name a beer after the Edmund Fitgerald. What, does it go down smooth?

    What’s next, Titanic Ice Beer?

  27. - Amalia - Tuesday, Oct 25, 16 @ 1:36 pm:

You win, you get the TV museum. We win, we get the Rock Hall.

  28. - Anon - Tuesday, Oct 25, 16 @ 1:37 pm:

===“How about, let’s have a wager on the World Series?”===

My guess is that Rauner will refuse to pay if the Indians lose because it’s illegal to gamble in Illinois and any contract, etc, is void if it is based upon the wager.

  29. - Ron Burgundy - Tuesday, Oct 25, 16 @ 2:01 pm:

–Kind of in poor taste to name a beer after the Edmund Fitzgerald.–

Kind of in poor taste to name a bad soccer team after the Chicago Fire.

  30. - Rich Miller - Tuesday, Oct 25, 16 @ 2:02 pm:

Pretty sure Ron Burgundy won that exchange.

  31. - wordslinger - Tuesday, Oct 25, 16 @ 2:15 pm:

RB, hadn’t thought of that. I’m so tuned into Cubs I didn’t even know Bears/Packers played last Thursday. First game of theirs I haven’t watched since I can remember.

    Didnt miss much, apparently.

  32. - Ron Burgundy - Tuesday, Oct 25, 16 @ 2:32 pm:

WS — That’s OK, I’m in the roughly half of Chicagoans for whom today is just Tuesday. There’s plenty of folks walking around in blue head to toe, and plenty of others who don’t appear to give a rip.

  33. - Campaign Grunt - Tuesday, Oct 25, 16 @ 2:52 pm:

Wow, I’m surprised Rauner is taking a break from his usual narrative, that Chicago is a cancer on the state, to cheer for the Cubbies and compliment the beer and pizza. Penultimate fair-weather fan!

  34. - Rabid - Tuesday, Oct 25, 16 @ 4:18 pm:

Both stood up the Cleveland convention now they want to act like team players, sad. Don’t the mayors make the bet?

  35. - gdubya - Tuesday, Oct 25, 16 @ 4:21 pm:

the Cubs haven’t been TO a world series since 1945, they haven’t WON since 1908. A real fan…

  36. - Jc19pd2 - Wednesday, Oct 26, 16 @ 1:52 pm:

Did Rauner and Kasich wager on the side who gets to sit closer to the Koch brothers at the next big Koch brother convention?
