Interesting fact. The political contributions by LAW cannot come from dues. The political contributions come from separate political funds which are individual contribtions. I don’t know about other unions but with AFSCME that comes from AFSCME PEOPLE. Illinois AFSCMEs are one of the largest contributors to the People fund. I believe over 80% of our Illinois members give money to the fund. So no the funds from dues do not go to political causes. This makes the money’s from unions even more impressive since it is not coming from three families but 10’s of thousands of individual contributors. I believe it’s the Taft Hartley law that prohibits dues from going to politics.
