Emanuel meeting with Trump this morning

Wednesday, Dec 7, 2016 - Posted by Rich Miller

* From the city…

Good morning-

I wanted to make sure you are aware of a meeting on the Mayor’s schedule this morning.

Mayor Emanuel will meet with the president-elect this morning when he is in New York for a series of other meetings. When they spoke a few weeks ago the President-elect asked for a meeting with the Mayor, as he has done with others who have significant experience in the White House and several other big city mayors. The meeting will take place at 10 AM eastern, 9 AM central.

According to the pool report, Emanuel didn’t use the main entrance at Trump’s building.

…Adding… From the mayor’s office…

Mayor Rahm Emanuel and mayors from across the country today sent a letter to President-elect Donald Trump urging him to continue the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) Program until Congress modernizes the immigration system and provides a more permanent form of relief for the close to one million young people who were brought to the United States before they were 16.

“Ensuring DREAMers can continue to live and work in their communities without fear of deportation is the foundation of sound, responsible immigration policy. Ending DACA would disrupt the lives of close to one million young people, and it would disrupt the American economy, as well as our national security and public safety,” said Mayor Emanuel in the letter to Trump. “We encourage your Administration to demonstrate your commitment to the American economy and our security by continuing DACA until Congress modernizes our immigration system and provides a more permanent form of relief for these individuals.”

The DACA program helps ensure that qualified undocumented youth can seek higher education, work and engage in military service without fear of deportation. Youth who were under the age of 31 as of June 15, 2012; came to the U.S. before reaching their 16th birthday; have lived in the US continuously for five years; and are currently in school, have graduated or obtained a certificate of completion from high school, have obtained a general education development (GED) certificate, or are an honorably discharged veteran of the Coast Guard or Armed Forces of the United States; who have not been convicted of a felony offense, a significant misdemeanor, or more than three misdemeanors of any kind; and do not pose a threat to national security or public safety; may apply through the program for temporary deferred action and work authorization.

Nearly 742,000 youth have participated in DACA since the program began in 2012. In addition to citing the disruption to countless lives of youth across the country, the Mayors also cautioned the incoming Administration about the economic impact that would come with the eliminating DACA.

According to the National Partnership for New Americans (NPNA), eliminating the program would lead to the loss of $9.9 billion in tax contributions over the next four years and would wipe away at least $433.4 billion from the U.S. gross domestic product (GDP) over the next decade.

Mayors signing the letter included: Mayor Megan Barry of Nashville, TN; Mayor Bill di Blasio of New York City, NY; Mayor Jorge Elorza of Providence, RI; Mayor Eric Garcetti of Los Angeles, CA; Mayor Michael Hancock of Denver, CO; Mayor Betsy Hodges of Minneapolis, MN; Mayor Jim Kenney of Philadelphia, PA; Mayor Ed Lee of San Francisco, CA; Isiah Leggett County Executive, Montgomery County, MD; Mayor Sam Liccardo of San Jose, CA; Mayor Ed Murray of Seattle, WA; Former Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake of Baltimore, MD; Mayor Fran

Did super-agent and Trump confidante Ari Emanuel cut a deal for his brother to be appointed to a fancy ambassadorship?

Rahm-hating Chicagoans can dream, can’t we?

  2. - AlfondoGonz - Wednesday, Dec 7, 16 @ 9:32 am:

Ok, Rahm. Tell him his victory was tremendous and his hotel is tremendous and he is a miracle and then ask for whatever you want.

  3. - tsavo - Wednesday, Dec 7, 16 @ 9:35 am:

Maybe he just wants to give him the honorary street signs the city took down.

Donald says, sanctuary city status will have to go, or you will not get federal money!

They should hold it at MSG and sell tickets:

“Egomania I: The Boor War,”‘ or “Clash of the Cretins.”

I love the repetitive justifications through out the release. Gold!

  7. - Responsa - Wednesday, Dec 7, 16 @ 9:52 am:

Talking is good. People like to see evidence of talking and discussing face to face which might result in some practical w areas of agreement among their elected leaders. Hint, hint Rauner and Madigan.

Oh to be a fly on the wall, or a rat in the wall…

  9. - Deft Wing - Wednesday, Dec 7, 16 @ 9:55 am:

Of course, Rahm’s meeting with Trump! They have lots of friends in common, especially the Clintons! Sad!

  10. - cdog - Wednesday, Dec 7, 16 @ 9:59 am:

I think Rahm will be surprised by the concern Trump has for Chicagoans, of all colors/ethnicities/religions, who are being victimized by this historic wave of violent hoolaganism.

I am sure they will find common ground. Trump will have good, creative, non-traditional ideas.

The Sanctuary For Violent Criminals Era may just come to an end,

  11. - Responsa - Wednesday, Dec 7, 16 @ 10:08 am:

Well, let’s see…Rahm governs a sanctuary city, and Boeing is headquartered in Chicago, and Chicago has a nationally known terrible murder rate which is largely gang related. Yeah, I’d say there there might be some things for Rahm and Trump to talk about.

  12. - JS Mill - Wednesday, Dec 7, 16 @ 10:28 am:

Trump will explain to Rahm exactly why he is punishing Boeing, err…Illinois.

  13. - Slippin' Jimmy - Wednesday, Dec 7, 16 @ 11:09 am:

This is really about Rahm wishing to apologize for the citizens of his city denying President elect Trumps 1st Amendment rights when President elect Trumps campaign rally had to be cancelled because of the anarchy which erupted inside and in the streets outside the rally site.

  14. - VanillaMan - Wednesday, Dec 7, 16 @ 11:28 am:

Wouldn’t it be great for our city if we had a president from Chicago? He’d make sure that Chicago would be taken care of, get special attention to address our challenges, get Federal dollars to rebuild our infrastructure, get added police protection for our crime riddled Southsiders.

If Chicago got a Chicagoan as president, we’d get a lot of help, right?

  15. - Rod - Wednesday, Dec 7, 16 @ 11:42 am:

I doubt seriously that the primary discussion president elect Trump wants to have with Mayor Emanuel is about the DREAMers or listen to the Mayor’s justification for Chicago being a sanctuary city. Steve Bannon and the Brietbart crowd would see Trump backing off going after the sanctuary city funding as a betrayal.

A bill penalizing Chicago and other cities passed the US House in 2015 241-179, but in the Senate a similar bill got only 54 yes votes but needed at least 60 to advance avoiding a filibuster. It’s not at all clear the situation on penalizing sanctuary cities has changed in the Senate. Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), chairman of the Judiciary Committee believes they have the votes now to pass a penalizing bill because some additional Democrats are intimidated over the entire immigration issue in light of the Trump victory.

There are executive orders that President Trump could implement that are fully constitutional, fully within his authority, that I could have the effect of cutting some funds to Chicago. Mayor Emanuel will likely get nowhere with Trump on stopping the executive orders either.

  16. - Carhartt Representative - Wednesday, Dec 7, 16 @ 12:56 pm:

The Emanuels have a long standing friendship with the Donald that includes all three brothers. That’s one of the reasons Trump has always donated so heavily to Rahm’s campaigns. Ari already met with him.

==I doubt seriously that the primary discussion president elect Trump wants to have with Mayor Emanuel is about the DREAMers or listen to the Mayor’s justification for Chicago being a sanctuary city.==

The current web Chicago Tribune article about the meeting says otherwise.

  19. - Federalist - Wednesday, Dec 7, 16 @ 2:49 pm:

There is no way that Trump could approve of the DACA without losing credibility. And this issue is not something that can be done behind the scenes and hope everybody forgets about it. Even a more limited version (such as those in the states continuously from ages 6 to 21) would be fraught with legitimate documentation problems.

The mayors supporting this is a Who’s Who list of those who detest Trump and you can bet Trump will not forget that.

  20. - Rod - Wednesday, Dec 7, 16 @ 2:58 pm:

Actually not, Responsa I read the article and it indicated that Mr. Bannon was present at all parts of the meeting. What the article states is that Mayor Emanuel put forward his position on dreamers and sanctuary cities, so he said his piece big deal.

If President elect Trump was going to negotiate on those issues with the Mayor, Mr. Bannon would not have been present for all of the discussion as the article indicates. Bannon is the hardest of the hard against sanctuary cities.Immigration and sanctuary cities in particular have been a hot-button issue for conservatives, stoked in big part by coverage from the Bannon-led Breitbart.com.

What team Trump wanted to learn about was the Mayor’s experience with transition for Obama and I suspect the Mayor’s role in coordinating the legislative agenda in Obama’s early days in office was also useful information. Rahm Emanuel was selected by President-elect Obama on November 6, only two days after the election as the Chief of Staff so his role in the transition process was foundational.

Senate GOP Staffer - Attorney Jo Johnson is one of the smartest people in Springfield. She understands difficult issues and is always a pleasure to work with. If she is working on an issue, you know it’s going to get done the right way.
Senate Dem Staffer - I’ll second attorney Louie Mossos. He worked for the House, Senate, Attorney General, and even was a lobbyist. Louie is always one step ahead because he can analyze issues from these multiple perspectives. Plus, he’s got a guy for everything.

  22. - Angry Chicagoan - Wednesday, Dec 7, 16 @ 3:52 pm:

Go Rahmie. Put in a good word for real transit and infrastructure funding. Put in a good word for DREAMers. Work on him over DACA. Don’t let him take credit for transit TIFs.
