A couple of quick debate clips

Friday, Sep 21, 2018 - Posted by Rich Miller

* The video’s audio are a bit out of synch, but one of the lesser-told stories of last night’s debate was how JB Pritzker dodged and weaved throughout the evening. The man just doesn’t like to talk specifics

He really is taking Jim Edgar’s advice to heart.

* Meanwhile, from the Pritzker campaign…

JB took Rauner to task on higher education and taking credit for Andy Manar’s historic school funding reform, saying “virtually everything you just tried to take credit for happened in spite of you, not because of you.”

Watch

“The Democrats had a super majority,” is the most Rauner excuse ever for the impasse.

Maybe it’s just me, but I thought the exchange last night was expletive-expletive awful. Carol M did a fair job of refereeing the mayhem, but I heard about 2 percent useful information, the rest bluster and mud.

  2. - Bobby T - Friday, Sep 21, 18 @ 11:26 am:

Someone should really, really coach Rauner on the smirking. The smile/smirk/shrugging shoulders stuff is exactly what you’re *not supposed to do* when you disagree with your opponent.

Rauner is a remarkably unappealing candidate.

  3. - Anon221 - Friday, Sep 21, 18 @ 11:28 am:

To the second clip- Rauner seems to selectively forget that it wasn’t the Democrat Super Majority that finally helped stop the budget impasse.

  4. - Texas Red - Friday, Sep 21, 18 @ 11:33 am:

JB’s definition of “wealthy” and “middle class” the great mystery of this election.

  5. - Mr. Smith - Friday, Sep 21, 18 @ 11:33 am:

So, JB is a better boxer than we gave him credit for. Slipping punches is the way you stay on your feet in the ring. Politics, on the other hand, is more like MMA. Anything seems to go, especially these days.

Rauner: D- (I noticed the smirk, too - really bad)
JB: C+ / B- nothing really substantial, but didn’t mess up significantly and the remark on school funding reform landed.

–“The Democrats had a super majority,” is the most Rauner excuse ever for the impasse.==

And also a lie, as we and Ken Dunkin, Jack Franks and Scott Drury know. (That word “lie” really comes up a lot with Rauner).

The House Dems failed to override more than sixty (at my last count) Rauner vetoes the first two years. Some super-majority.

  7. - Amalia - Friday, Sep 21, 18 @ 11:36 am:

I’m with Ed Higher. And maybe higher is the only way to stomach these candidates.

  8. - JS Mill - Friday, Sep 21, 18 @ 11:38 am:

The second clip is really Rauner’s time in a nutshell. It is a great and fair hit, completely accurate. And all he can do is blather about the democrat majority. No list of accomplishments that were driven by him.

Says everything you need to know.

  9. - Duopoly - Friday, Sep 21, 18 @ 11:39 am:

Pritzker could have easily addressed the property tax exemption issue by the following:

    - Houses without functioning toilets are reasonably considered uninhabitable. and

    - the house was in fact uninhabited and taxed accordingly. (unless he was living there without toilets, then a new set of questions arise -eeewh)

  10. - Lucky Pierre - Friday, Sep 21, 18 @ 11:44 am:

Ken Dunkin, Scott Drury and Jack Franks aren’t Democrats? Who is lying?

if you can’t even get your own caucus on board with your proposals of zero reforms and higher taxes how do you expect Republican to go along?

  11. - Rich Miller - Friday, Sep 21, 18 @ 11:46 am:

===how do you expect Republican to go along? ===

    Some did. Remember?

  12. - wordslinger - Friday, Sep 21, 18 @ 11:51 am:

–Ken Dunkin, Scott Drury and Jack Franks aren’t Democrats? Who is lying?–

Oh, no, LP is bringin’ out his big-brain retortin’.

Because of those three, House Dems did not have an effective super-majority to override vetoes — which is the point, of a super-majority. That was proven dozens of times.

I can’t dumb that down any further for you, comrade.

  13. - Oswego Willy - Friday, Sep 21, 18 @ 11:53 am:

===Ken Dunkin, Scott Drury and Jack Franks aren’t Democrats? Who is lying?===

In the end, Rauner made the Dem Caucus 68,
    not 71…

    Rauner bragged about it, LOL

  14. - Oswego Willy - Friday, Sep 21, 18 @ 11:58 am:

For the love of Pete… Rauner even bragged about Dunkin specifically to stay in NYC…

    “Lucky Pierre”

The game was always keeping Madigan from 71, never getting 60 or 30. Nope.

  15. - Chi Girl - Friday, Sep 21, 18 @ 12:00 pm:

@oswego willy that’s what I was thinking. Wasn’t he so proud of himself for getting rid of the super majority? Now he’s out there saying it still exists? Is he dumb or does he just think we are all dumb??

  16. - Pick a Name - Friday, Sep 21, 18 @ 12:01 pm:

I think a great debate question for JB would be–

Outside of writing checks, can you point to anything of substance you have accomplished in your adult life?

  17. - Oswego Willy - Friday, Sep 21, 18 @ 12:03 pm:

===Outside of writing checks, can you point to anything of substance you have accomplished in your adult life?===

    According to CEOs… 1871.

… but you already know that, you’re just being a piece of work.

  18. - Ole General - Friday, Sep 21, 18 @ 12:11 pm:

I could see Kash becoming more vocal in support of Rauner as this goes on. McCann tried to be like The Donald, but let’s just say he lacks a lot in the looks department.

  19. - Soccermom - Friday, Sep 21, 18 @ 12:26 pm:

Rauner looks like a death’s head. Why is he doing this to himself?

  20. - Nietzsche - Friday, Sep 21, 18 @ 12:45 pm:

=Rauner looks like a death’s head. Why is he doing this to himself? =

He’s a wartime governor and it’s taken its toll.

He’s been waging a bloody war on Illinois for years now.

  21. - DuPage Bard - Friday, Sep 21, 18 @ 12:46 pm:

The tell with Bruce if it hurts or he’s caught and uncomfortable that little chuckle he does every time he’s caught.
Does it pretty frequently. Half the debate with Jeanne was in that mode.
This is where the problem for Bruce is he can’t hide when he’s hurt. It’s a prize fighter who shows the wince when he’s hit hard, a poker player who doesn’t know how to hide what’s in his hand.

  22. - Steve - Friday, Sep 21, 18 @ 12:51 pm:

What’s interesting is at what tax rate would JB call someone middle class in Illinois ?

  23. - Anonymous - Friday, Sep 21, 18 @ 1:34 pm:

“Outside of writing checks, can you point to anything of substance you have accomplished in your adult life?”

He should only be so lucky as to get that question:

    1871
    Building the Chicago Tech Community
    Illinois Holocaust Museum
    School breakfasts
    Thousands of jobs
    Early childhood education expansion
    Building a successful business

    Just to name a few.

  24. - Mama - Friday, Sep 21, 18 @ 2:19 pm:

    “Thousands of jobs”

Where are those thousands of jobs?

  25. - Pick a Name - Friday, Sep 21, 18 @ 2:24 pm:

Thanks Willy. Write checks for all of those except the “thousands of jobs” and “building a successful business” claims.

    Care to elaborate?

I didn’t watch the debate, did JB spell out his role in all of things you listed?

  26. - Oswego Willy - Friday, Sep 21, 18 @ 2:32 pm:

===Write checks for all of those except the “thousands of jobs” and “building a successful business” claims.===

    Again,

There was CEO after CEO explaining Pritzker and 1871.

Be it Chancellors of Universities, actual CEOs who explain…

    “You know”…LOL

I know, “you know”… more than university presidents, more than company CEOs who did the ad for Pritzker.

It makes you a piece of work, doesn’t it?

===I didn’t watch the debate, did JB spell out his role in all of things you listed?===

You and - Piece of Work - should watch… again.

  27. - Deadbeat Conservative - Friday, Sep 21, 18 @ 2:35 pm:

==Where are those thousands of jobs?==

They’re filling binders right now, waiting for BVR to be re-elected.
