Will wonders never cease?

Wednesday, Nov 20, 2019 - Posted by Rich Miller

* Greg Sapp at WXEF Radio in the heart of Eastern Bloc territory

On a 3-2 vote, the Effingham City Council voted to allow the sale of adult-use cannabis within the city limits.

Actually, the vote was 2-3, since the motion before the Council was to prohibit cannabis sales. Mayor Mike Schutzbach and Commissioner Merv Gillenwater voted for the prohibition, while Commissioners Hank Stephens, Larry Micenheimer and Libby Moeller voted against the measure and to allow sales.

In a separate motion, the Council voted 5-0 to set the tax rate on cannabis sales at 3%. Sale of adult-use cannabis in Illinois will be legal as of January 1, 2020. […]

About 10 people spoke on the issue ahead of the vote, almost evenly divided between those supportive of or opposed to the sales.

I… I don’t think that’s how Robert’s Rules work? Don’t you need to pass an affirmative motion?

  2. - Grandson of Man - Wednesday, Nov 20, 19 @ 9:38 am:

So excellent. Have fun, Eastern Bloc. Also great to see Springfield vote for zoning. More licenses for recreational were issued. It looks good for next year’s rollout, much better than Massachusetts, who took years to implement their recreational law.

Darren Bailey never thought he would lament the lack of elderly Asian voters in Effingham, but then came legalized cannabis…..

Illinois law is not opt-in, it’s opt-out. You’re in unless you vote to leave.

I’m noticing that all the ‘opt-out’ groups and their shirts only seem to be showing up to areas immediately around Wheaton.

Normal passed a similar law earlier this week to allow sales, with none of the usual opposition crowd. Just a boring rational discussion based on facts, followed by a vote to approve.

Glad to see the moral high ground erodes as soon as revenue comes to the table.

====Mayor Mike Schutzbach and Commissioner Merv Gillenwater voted for the prohibition==

They sure are selective about what they want the government to regulate and what they don’t want the government to regulate.

Those tax and spenders in southern Illinois.

  10. - Mr. B.A. - Wednesday, Nov 20, 19 @ 10:51 am:

I see where Manhattan in the south suburbs approved the sale of cannabis last night also.

Maybe, just maybe the Region is beginning to dismiss the ramblings of the Eastern Blockheads?

  12. - RIJ - Wednesday, Nov 20, 19 @ 11:22 am:

Good. Maybe they’ll all toke up and just relax. I’ll be happy to light Darren Bailey’s bowl.

  13. - Unpopular - Wednesday, Nov 20, 19 @ 11:33 am:

That is too bad. Still very thankful for the many communities that are doing what is right, and opting out.

  14. - Maryjane - Wednesday, Nov 20, 19 @ 11:54 am:

Bravo! Well done Effingham; ‘wise decision.

  15. - Grandson of Man - Wednesday, Nov 20, 19 @ 11:55 am:

“Glad to see the moral high ground erodes as soon as revenue comes to the table.”

The moral high ground was eroded decades ago by the beginning of utterly futile and damaging marijuana prohibition. For decades all sales have gone to the black market, including kids’ purchases.

Instead of collecting a local sales tax revenue, they prefer to raise their property assessments and property taxes.

As a citizen of said region I can say with some confidence that the majority of Effingham residents never gave credibility to those ramblings.

  18. - Panther Pride - Wednesday, Nov 20, 19 @ 3:25 pm:

Good for them. They already have a medicinal dispensary that I believe was in the first round of adult-use licenses given. Would have been pretty dumb if they voted no and lost out on a sure thing.

  19. - Don't Bloc Me In - Wednesday, Nov 20, 19 @ 7:02 pm:

A few years ago the Effingham City Council turned down a request from a growing facility which wanted to locate within the city limits. There was backlash to this decision. The current council members may have learned from this.

Cubs in ‘16…are you serious? I believe the majority of Effingham would follow Bailey and Co. right off a cliff.

    Apparently not.
