Center Square highlights Mary Miller claims that she, her husband and “conservative Christians” are the real victims

Wednesday, Mar 3, 2021 - Posted by Rich Miller

* Center Square

A Republican congresswoman is defending her state lawmaker husband from what she says are attacks full of lies about the Jan. 6 capitol riots. Illinois Democrats are demanding an investigation.

Hundreds of thousands of people were in Washington D.C. Jan. 6 when the U.S. Congress was certifying the presidential election. A riot then ensued at the capitol building. Hundreds of people face criminal charges because of the violence and trespassing.

Video and other images on social media show state Rep. Chris Miller, R-Oakland, was in Washington D.C. Jan. 6 attending rallies. Pictures also show a truck purportedly owned by Miller with a decal for a group called The Three Percenters.

State Rep. Bob Morgan, D-Deerfield, filed House Resolution 132 condemning Miller and claims he violated his oath of office. It has the support of 35 other Democrats, including House Speaker Emanuel “Chris” Welch, D-Hillside.

“Miller participated, and publicly promoted his role, in a rally that led to a violent insurrection of the Capitol of the United States of America, which resulted in the death of United States citizens, including members of law enforcement,” the resolution says. Miller “has continued to publicly support The Three Percenters, a para-military, anti-government hate group identified by the Anti-Defamation League and the Southern Poverty Law Center as having the goal of overthrowing the United States government through violent revolutionary tactics.”

Miller couldn’t be reached for comment.

U.S. Rep. Mary Miller, R-Oakland, told WMAY Wednesday her husband was nowhere near the riot, and they do not condone violence.

“He attended with constituents the rally,” Miller said. “It never crossed his mind once to be violent. We don’t advocate violence. We stand for rule of law and anybody that was violent or broke the law should be arrested and prosecuted, but he had nothing to do with that.” […]

The congresswoman said Morgan’s resolution is the latest in a series of increased targeting from Democrats.

“The attack is not just on him or on me, but it’s on all of my colleagues, we are all getting vile, vile messages and death threats,” Miller said. “They’re misrepresenting and lying about us, taking things out of context.”

It’s not just elected Republicans Miller said Democrats are going after.

“Their goal is to scare conservative Christians, especially, to be quiet and don’t get involved,” Miller said. “And I can say they may be coming for us today but they’ll be coming for you tomorrow. And I want to tell everybody to grow a backbone and get involved and speak up.”

Not one mention in that article about her Hitler comment. Nor this…

Notice he’s standing in front of a 3 Percenters banner in that first video.

* Center Square appears to be rapidly moving well beyond its stated purpose

The focus of our work is state- and local-level government and economic reporting. A taxpayer sensibility distinguishes our work from other coverage of state and local issues. As a result of this approach, our readers are better informed about the focus of state and local government and its cost to the citizens whose tax dollars fund governmental decisions.

===Center Square appears to be rapidly moving well beyond its stated purpose…===

They have the same readers as Illinois Review so I can see the cross-over appeal.

  2. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Mar 3, 21 @ 3:26 pm:

So, they are victims (the Millers) for having racist and national socialist thoughts?

    Huh.

    That’s an interesting take.

    Let’s also remember as we read this “coverage” how Chairman Tracy sees racists, insurrectionists, and conspiracy theorists;

    February 6th Capitol Fax

===“My number one priority is to give every Republican a seat at the table and give every Republican a voice. Regardless of our differences, Republicans are the only hope for turning Illinois around and keeping it from becoming…

So, whatever your political leanings, wherever you live - if you want to fight … It’s time to suit up, work together, and bring home some wins for the people of Illinois.”===

So Mary Miller being a victim still allows both Millers to be embraced by the ILGOP.

I’m a Christian. What they are doing and saying is not Christ-like. Quite the opposite IMO. Donald Trump and his well documented failings are far from Christ-like. Quite the opposite. I don’t recognize any of this in the teachings of Christianity.

  4. - low level - Wednesday, Mar 3, 21 @ 3:32 pm:

Conservative Christians have no defenders? Lol. Right.

(To say nothing of the fact that Scripture seems to support what we would call a progressive outlook. Turn the other cheek, give to the poor, etc)

  5. - Anonymous - Wednesday, Mar 3, 21 @ 3:33 pm:

“Their goal is to scare conservative Christians”, Christians try to be Christ-like. I think she has missed that concept.

  6. - AlfondoGonz - Wednesday, Mar 3, 21 @ 3:35 pm:

    These people are an embarrassment.

    ==taking things out of context.==

What’s the proper context for “Hitler being right on one thing” and having a decal that promotes a far-right, anti-government militia movement?

  8. - don the legend - Wednesday, Mar 3, 21 @ 3:38 pm:

Pity the Millers. Christian teachings don’t support their words, behaviors, positions or actions.

  9. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Mar 3, 21 @ 3:39 pm:

One of the absolute best take downs of Trumpkin thinking to Christian is the “Mayor Pete” undressing of Trump and all the contradictions Christians seem to ignore while “idol worshipping”

It’s on YouTube, check it out.

    To the post on that,

The angry white racism and the idea of Christianity “in their hearts” is the Millers trying to, like so, so many, excuse so much of the racist thinkings and even quoting the leader of the national socialists.

If these Christians ever studied Christ instead of looking for “Christian Loopholes” they’d realize they (the Millers) aren’t the victims, they (the Millers) are what Christ warns us in the Pharisees

As someone who lives in Mary Miller’s district, I am continually astounded that someone who espouses to be a Christian continually has such un Christian thoughts. She must read the upside down bible that her favorite president holds up.

  11. - Lincoln Lad - Wednesday, Mar 3, 21 @ 3:44 pm:

The sponsor of the resolution is active in the Anti-Defamation League if I’m not mistaken. They are likely playing the Christian card as a message to supporters about the sponsor and his faith. Veiled messages are part of the nonsense these fringe anarchists live and love. Remember the Hitler comment the Representative made… another veiled message. Their response reinforces the importance of this resolution passing. What they are doing is beneath the dignity of their offices, and we all deserve better. Shut this down, call it out for what it is, and put an end to the nonsense. The KKK burned crosses to share their message of faith… but none of it has anything to do with the teachings of Christ. Just another veil…

These are literally the sickest people ever elected in Illinois in the modern era. I’ve typically called them crypto fascists. It is time to drop the crypto. I have never seen people with such little decency and respect for anything.

  13. - Not really a Bible Scholar - Wednesday, Mar 3, 21 @ 3:52 pm:

Maybe the Millers have not read this verse in the NIV version of Timothy 2 Chapter 4: “For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear.
They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths.”
    Whew! Too close for comfort.

  14. - TheInvisibleMan - Wednesday, Mar 3, 21 @ 3:56 pm:

If you can’t handle a diverse public talking about you, don’t run for public office.

This isn’t a surprise to hear. It’s practically biolerplate to any criticism of the type they are facing.

It’s pretty much right out of the “Project Blitz” playbook the religious right has been operating under for years.

  15. - Earnest - Wednesday, Mar 3, 21 @ 3:56 pm:

    >These people are an embarrassment.

They are not an embarrassment, nor an object of pity. They represent the views of one of our state and nation’s two major political parties with a level of support that has significant potential to end our current system of government.

  16. - Rich Miller - Wednesday, Mar 3, 21 @ 3:57 pm:

=== i mean, dpi still controls VAN, right===

So, you’re saying DPI should withhold VAN from the governor if he doesn’t give them millions?

    Wow.

    lol

  17. - Club J - Wednesday, Mar 3, 21 @ 4:00 pm:

Seems the Center Square didn’t interview Mary Miller. They basically gave her an open platform to spew her theories without being called on them.

  18. - Norseman - Wednesday, Mar 3, 21 @ 4:02 pm:

Anyone surprised that Center Square is pushing GQP propaganda?

Regarding the Miller’s victimhood, they all in on GQP alternative reality. Pretending to be victims is what they do.

  19. - former southerner - Wednesday, Mar 3, 21 @ 4:20 pm:

Some old souls are fortunate to go quietly in their sleep, but the GOP is suffering an ugly and painful lingering death that damages everyone around them.

  20. - Sir Reel - Wednesday, Mar 3, 21 @ 4:39 pm:

And Republicans call Democrats snowflakes. Guess it’s a one way thing.

  21. - JoanP - Wednesday, Mar 3, 21 @ 4:56 pm:

    Such snowflakes.

  22. - Don't Bloc Me In - Wednesday, Mar 3, 21 @ 5:01 pm:

Pity the poor Millers. They just weren’t ready for prime time.

  23. - Dance Band on the Titanic - Wednesday, Mar 3, 21 @ 5:03 pm:

Is anyone really shocked that Center Square is neither?

  24. - Chicago Cynic - Wednesday, Mar 3, 21 @ 5:08 pm:

    Center Square is Wirepoints lite.

  25. - Frumpy White Guy - Wednesday, Mar 3, 21 @ 5:10 pm:

I am afraid. Very very very afraid.

  26. - MyTwoCents - Wednesday, Mar 3, 21 @ 5:17 pm:

While not surprising the Millers pulled the Christian persecution card while worshipping Trump is the height of hypocrisy. As for Center Square, they are nothing more than a propaganda outfit masquerading as “journalists”.

  27. - Chicago 20 - Wednesday, Mar 3, 21 @ 5:51 pm:

Center Square has no integrity and spews far right-wing propaganda.
They have no credibility and they should not be acknowledged as a news source.

  28. - OneMan - Wednesday, Mar 3, 21 @ 5:58 pm:

I mean who has the energy just to even ponder that everyone is against them and their worldview at this point?

I almost want to give them credit for being able to still be that mad. To think there are all these enemies and care about them.

I guessed I missed the weeks in confirmation and Sunday school where they said to be ticked off that much.

However I think there may be real money in writing a hymm titled “If you are angry and you know it”

  29. - @misterjayem - Wednesday, Mar 3, 21 @ 6:42 pm:

Today, Center Square has centered not a square but another easily recognizable shape with right-angles and a 4-fold symmetry.
