Late afternoon campaign video roundup

Posted in:

* Simon Edelman has done it again. His “Act 1 curtain call,” as he calls it, is “mighty” fine, with a groovy Grateful Dead twist

If everything I knew about Pat Quinn was from Simon’s videos, I’d be voting for the guy. No doubt.

He does need to learn how to avoid being photographed while sleeping, however. Here’s another “Sleeping Simon” pic submitted by the campaign…

* Don Tracy’s TV ad

* Scott Lee Cohen’s TV ad

* Rep. David Miller’s final YouTube video of the primary

* Jim Ryan’s latest YouTube effort isn’t exactly positive

* Dan Proft’s YouTube closer

* Sen. Rickey Hendon’s YouTube video is not nearly as entertaining as his radio ad, but here it is anyway

* Jason Plummer’s GOTV message

  1. what is the lapel pin that Dan Proft wears?

Comment by Will County Woman Monday, Feb 1, 10 @ 3:05 pm

  2. Quinn should buy 3 mins tonight on Ch. 7 news at 10 to air that latest video. It would be his best ad to date and would put him over the finish line (and yes, I know it would be expensive).

Comment by Niles Township Monday, Feb 1, 10 @ 3:07 pm

  3. Ummm, is it ok for Henderson to be using the city logo (that’s what it looks like) in that video?

Comment by OneMan Monday, Feb 1, 10 @ 3:18 pm

  4. When are we going to do a caption contest for a photo of Simon sleeping?

Comment by Small Town Liberal Monday, Feb 1, 10 @ 3:18 pm

  5. Nothing’s stopping you, but he’s such a good kid - and I’ve met him and can vouch for him - that I’d hate to subject him to our biting ridicule. lol

Comment by Rich Miller Monday, Feb 1, 10 @ 3:19 pm

  6. He’s a pretty good friend of mine so I’d be nice at least.

Comment by Small Town Liberal Monday, Feb 1, 10 @ 3:23 pm

  7. Simon, if you read this blog, you need to ask for a 12k raise after Tuesday. You earned it and a whole lot more. I am volunteering to be your agent. Memo to Sott Lee Cohen, if you are going to drop $1 million of your own bucks to run for an office with basically no power, you just might want to invest in better production and a website that doesn’t look like it was constructed in 1995.

Comment by Burrito Bandit Monday, Feb 1, 10 @ 3:25 pm

  8. did you notice Ricky Hendon spells his web address wrong?

Comment by Laughing Monday, Feb 1, 10 @ 3:32 pm

  9. Will County Woman, the lapel pin Proft wears is from Operation Homefront, he is the state chair of the orginazation

Comment by Just wondering Monday, Feb 1, 10 @ 3:35 pm

  10. Don Tracy’s ad is funny and spot-on. A+

Comment by Team Sleep Monday, Feb 1, 10 @ 3:43 pm

  11. everything proft does looks dark or sounds angry. You are selling yourself not goth clothing.

the hendon thing reminds me of a bad tim meadows movie from the late 1990’s. that sign looks like its official-city of chicago, a campaign no no, I thought. The foreclosure thing is nice, let’s raise taxes on people that don’t buy houses they can’t afford to bail out those that did buy houses they couldn’t afford.

I don’t always agree with greg hinz-his column in crains today is warmed over liberal junk about campaign finance reform-, but his work has been really good, particularly today taking dillard, mckenna and hynes to task.

Comment by shore Monday, Feb 1, 10 @ 3:46 pm

  12. Watching that Ryan video I was practically expecting some kid to try and sell me a hit of E before the cops came and kicked us out of the abandoned warehouse.

    Or the Purple Hotel.

Comment by JonShibleyFan Monday, Feb 1, 10 @ 3:57 pm

  13. plummer looks like a rookie–better luck, next time kiddo….

Comment by independent Monday, Feb 1, 10 @ 4:08 pm

  14. ===better luck, next time kiddo===

I dunno about that. He’s outspending everybody by a wide margin.

Comment by Rich Miller Monday, Feb 1, 10 @ 4:09 pm

  15. Indy, Rich is 100% correct. Jason P. has vastly outraised and outspent everyone, although Don Tracy isn’t too far behind in the fundraising part. When Terry Link complained about Scott Lee Cohen spending his $$$ to secure a job that pays $150,000 and controls few jobs, I promptly reminded myself that our parties often spend a ton of cash to elect a state rep. There’s no real difference. If Jason and his family think their investment will result in a statewide office, bully for them.

Comment by Team Sleep Monday, Feb 1, 10 @ 4:17 pm

  16. Simon Edelman is a pro. Despite having real challenges to deal with related to his candidate’s obvious problems, Simon has done a remarkable job of burnishing Quinn’s public image and reputation in this video. Toyota should hire him.

Comment by Responsa Monday, Feb 1, 10 @ 4:18 pm

  17. Hendon’s got some smooth music going on in the background, I’ll give him that. If he would’ve added a few clips of “oooh yeah”, in a Barry White tone, I may have voted for him.

Comment by Anon Monday, Feb 1, 10 @ 4:43 pm

  18. Rich, can I just say that you really DO have the best commenters, bloggers ever. The critiques on here are spot on AND always entertaining.
Thank you cap fax bloggers for making me laugh almost every day. And if we didn’t laugh here in IL with such a sad state indeed, I’d be cryin’.

Comment by dupage progressive Monday, Feb 1, 10 @ 4:46 pm

  19. Even if they had a Simon, Dan Hynes’ team could not produce videos like Edelman’s, because Dan doesn’t have Pat Quinn’s history or grassroots support.

Comment by Chubs Mahoney Monday, Feb 1, 10 @ 4:50 pm

  20. The biggest problem for Quinn is his inability to live up to the fantastic video’s that Simon produces. They only work on those that have not actually paid attention to Quinn’s performance in office.

    Comment by D.P. Gumby Monday, Feb 1, 10 @ 5:01 pm

  21. DP Gumby: You’re insulting all of the people who have nice things to say about Quinn in those videos.

Comment by Chubs Mahoney Monday, Feb 1, 10 @ 5:19 pm

  22. Regardless of the fact that holding job fairs has nothing to do with being the Lt. Governor, I actually like Cohen’s spot. At least the guy who got the job seems authentic.

  24. That’s an ad, not Simon.

Comment by Rich Miller Monday, Feb 1, 10 @ 5:27 pm

  25. I think Simon shot and edited the Gutierrez ad.

Comment by Chubs Mahoney Monday, Feb 1, 10 @ 5:35 pm

  26. Rich, as you may know I wear many hats. Fedoras, baseball, bowler, editor, photographer, visor, videographer, beanie, ad maker, rump shaker, babushka, ect

Comment by Simon Monday, Feb 1, 10 @ 5:55 pm

  27. Rich, I promise you, it was Simon.

Comment by chitownhv Monday, Feb 1, 10 @ 6:09 pm

  28. Egad. Scott Lee Cohen, who made millions by operating pawn shops and currency exchanges in economically depressed neighborhoods is now spending $1 million of his own money to tell us he is going to bring people jobs. The audio/video club over at Lane Tech could have shot and produced a better ad in two hours.

Comment by Irish Eyes Monday, Feb 1, 10 @ 6:34 pm

  29. And of course the Quinn campaign cleared the rights from the Grateful Dead to use that music cut, right? Right?

Comment by Jay Monday, Feb 1, 10 @ 6:55 pm

  30. Simon’s ad was Dead on! I want to know what Dead clip that is playing in the background? Did I hear Donna Jean?

Comment by Dead Head Monday, Feb 1, 10 @ 7:03 pm

  31. With eyeballs focused, I like Tracy’s clever ad quite a lot. However, it has an inherent weakness that I feel as if I have been harping on a lot with respect to this election season’s ads: It relies a great deal on sight gags. Many, many people multi-task while “watching” TV. (Doing dishes, eating dinner, polishing fingernails, flipping through the newspaper etc.) These people are likely to miss the sight gags. So, it works as an internet ad but not as well as a TV ad.

Comment by Responsa Monday, Feb 1, 10 @ 7:05 pm

  32. seriously… Hendon said hendonforeltgov.com He can’t spell “for” or can’t remember his web address!

Comment by xdtact Monday, Feb 1, 10 @ 7:10 pm

  33. um, Dead Head,

    Mighty Quinn????

Comment by Responsa Monday, Feb 1, 10 @ 7:11 pm

  34. - And of course the Quinn campaign cleared the rights from the Grateful Dead to use that music cut, right? Right? -

Yeah, they got about as much permission from Jerry Garcia as Hynes got from Harold Washington.

Comment by Small Town Liberal Monday, Feb 1, 10 @ 7:13 pm

  35. um, Responda,

    Da, from where, when?

Comment by Dead Head Monday, Feb 1, 10 @ 7:18 pm

  36. Technically, they would get the rights from Bob Dylan, wouldn’t they? Besides, it’s probably Public Domain by now.

Comment by Dead Head Monday, Feb 1, 10 @ 7:21 pm

  37. Did anybody see the connection of “The Grateful Dead” and it’s relation to Hynes’ burr oak scandal? hmm, very interesting choice music to close on. Gotta love poetic justice.

Comment by The Shadow Monday, Feb 1, 10 @ 7:28 pm

  38. I’m sure if Dylan or The Dead saw this video they wouldn’t have a problem with it being used. I don’t think I could say the same for a certain deceased Mayor we’ve all been reintroduced to.

Comment by Truthiness Monday, Feb 1, 10 @ 7:31 pm

  39. Never-mind the irony of the dead sometimes voting in Illinois elections.

Comment by Dead Head Monday, Feb 1, 10 @ 7:32 pm

  40. No, the mighty Quinn song is NOT public domain, you not only need synch rights for the song, but an okay from the publisher of the arrangement, lyric, and tune, and the label of the band that recorded it. and Simon Edelman is in blatant IP violation for using copyrighted music without permission, and this is not the first time either. I guess some folks think “creativity” excuses them from following the law. If you don’t like the copyright law, fight to change it.

Is the Edelman kid related to the PR fir m of the same name?

Comment by Some Guy Monday, Feb 1, 10 @ 8:21 pm

  41. Do Hendon and the other lite guv candidates know of some extra clause in the state constitution giving them the same powers as senate President? Because I’m pretty sure they are promising things they can’t deliver in these spots.

You have to hand it to Quinn that he took the worst and weakest job in the constitutional offices and made something extraordinary out of it, but he didn’t do it with some secret super-powers. He did it by hard work and talking to a LOT of people and organizing and rallying their voices. He’s been a washout as a governor, but was the best LT Gov. we ever had.

I doubt the followers-on will do half as well with what he built from nothing, from a job Bob Kustra walked away from twice.

But Hendon, I see as only using it for free earned media for promoting Hendon in a 4-year gubernatorial campaign, not for the causes abandoned by Blago as boring or not big vote-getters, and rescued and championed by Quinn.

Comment by Gregor Monday, Feb 1, 10 @ 8:33 pm

  42. Quinn’s opposition can get YouTube to pull that video for IP violation tonight, with just one email complaint. That’s why you don’t mess with copyrighted tunes as a pro.

Comment by Some Guy Monday, Feb 1, 10 @ 8:36 pm

  43. The Hynes campaign doesn’t know anything about copyright laws. They don’t know anything about election laws or campaign fiance laws either. Hynes was fined $375,000 by the federal government for “knowingly accepting illegal campaign contributions” when they ran against Barack Obama for Senate. Was that ethical?

They also don’t know anything about cemetery law and who has the power to close down cemeteries.

“Over the Memorial Day weekend, however, hundreds of Illinoisans walked away angry when they discovered that the graveyards housing their loved ones remains had become choked with weeds, marked by vandals and even closed to the public because of staffing problems. Acting on those complaints - registered through a state hotline - Illinois Comptroller Daniel Hynes has scheduled a series of hearings throughout the state aimed at figuring out ways to keep the state’s 1,800 licensed cemeteries and funeral homes in line. As comptroller, Hynes inherited the job of being a watchdog for the state’s privately owned cemeteries. “Upon taking office, I realized these problems were widespread, that they were happening all over Illinois,” Hynes said during a press conference last week.

For example, the Springdale Cemetery in Peoria has been under the comptroller’s microscope for several months because of its unkempt condition.

But the estimated 200 complaints that flooded in after the Memorial Day weekend spurred Hynes to take further action. Following the hearings, which begin next month, a task force will be established to suggest improvements.

State lawmakers took some action on cemeteries during the spring legislative session. House Bill 2081, which has been signed into law by Gov. George Ryan, gives Hynes’ office more power to revoke licenses of graveyard owners and funeral home operators, as well as provides some added protections for consumers if a cemetery goes bankrupt. 44. Some Guy, what if the band didn’t record it? What if he’s using live concert audio?

Comment by Dead Head Monday, Feb 1, 10 @ 9:52 pm

  45. OK, enough. Move along. I’m tired of deleting comments in this thread. Next one is banned for life.

  46. insomnia!

It is groundhog day and I heard that Jack Ryan will bee doing political coverage for channel 9. Is there really anything intersting he can say? People joke about Obama and the teleprompter, od and his talking points, but this guy does have the constant deer in the headlights look.
