  1. My prognostication came true! When the final buzzer sounded in 2009, I predicted the Blackhawks in 2010. I wish I had written that down. Congrats!

Comment by What planet is he from again? Thursday, Jun 10, 10 @ 10:08 am

  2. Now does the pressure REALLY rise on the Cubs?

Comment by tubbfan Thursday, Jun 10, 10 @ 10:10 am

  3. I am very proud of our team!
Fifty years! Time for a championship!
Thank you for bringing to Chicago a reason to cheer during a time when so many of our newsmakers are embarrassing us!

Comment by VanillaMan Thursday, Jun 10, 10 @ 10:13 am

  4. I echo VM’s sentiments. So proud of this team. True champions with limitless class. Congrats to our Chicago Blackhawks.

  5. This is a great day for Chicago! I’m so happy and proud of this great team. I hoped I would see this in my lifetime. Congrats to the Hawks and to all Blackhawk fans who waited 49 years for this day!

Comment by Beerman Thursday, Jun 10, 10 @ 10:19 am

  6. what an amazing clinching goal from Kaner! It looked like how one imagines that kind of a goal to be, sweeping to the goalmouth , slashing it in, needle in a haystack through, was it the 5 hole into the corner? listening, as I did in 1961, on the radio, feed ahead of tv, rushing in to watch the kid from Buffalo thread the needle.

since this is the first time since 1961, it’s also the first time we get to watch the action on tv, and it was magnificent in nutty
glory, from the announcers on ice, in particular Giangreco who
knows hockey, to drinking from the cup in the locker room, and today to following the guys from bar to bar to Ann Sathers.

    it’s all good. thanks Hawks!

Comment by Amalia Thursday, Jun 10, 10 @ 10:19 am

  7. as a kid growing up, I loved listening to Pat Foley on the radio, my father taking me to the Stadium, sitting in the second balcony and cheering for the Secord/Savard/Larmer line.

Sadly, that fandom slowly ebbed in the mid 90s and fell off the cliff in the last decade, thanks to Bill Wirtz’s absolute mismanagement.

Thank you, Rocky Wirtz, for restoring the roar!

Comment by Ravenswood Right Winger Thursday, Jun 10, 10 @ 10:21 am

  8. dah, dah, dah, duh, dah, dah, duh, dah, dah, dah, duh. that is a difficult song to spell out. i love it though. such a better song than the Journey song that was played all the time when the white sox won. (that was not meant to be a slam of the sox, but that song was bunk) go hawks! the masses have had their opium. everybody feel high? now time to move on.

Comment by bdogg Thursday, Jun 10, 10 @ 10:22 am

  9. “Now does the pressure REALLY rise on the Cubs?”

    YES!!! Congrats Black Hawks!

Comment by Levois Thursday, Jun 10, 10 @ 10:28 am

  10. No need to brag, just time to celebrate.

Comment by Scooby Thursday, Jun 10, 10 @ 10:28 am

  11. For a Chicagoland native forced to live in the Metro East, it’s a pleasure! With the Blues’ ownership in a cloud, the Hawks celebrate with Lord Stanley (with the Blues’ former coach, by the way).
    Congrats Hawks….see you tomorrow!

Comment by Vote Quimby! Thursday, Jun 10, 10 @ 10:43 am

  12. Anybody catch Quinn in Philly being interviewed by Mark Giangreco last night? Quigley was there too, but then Quigley is a hockey fan who doesn’t have much of a race this year.

Quinn? Dude, the state is teetering on the brink of insolvency, you’re trailing your weak opponent, you can’t seem to raise any money or run a decent campaign. Maybe taking a trip to Philly wasn’t the best use of your time Governor.

I guess we’ll see you at the parade tomorrow too. I expect you’ll hear some boos along the way.

    Comment by 47th Ward Thursday, Jun 10, 10 @ 10:44 am

Everyone deserves a night of; this was a once in 49 years thing.

Comment by Niles Township Thursday, Jun 10, 10 @ 10:47 am

  14. How fun was this season!?

This was the most fun thing to watch this year.

Congrats, congrats, congrats to the players, organization, and THE FANS.

Chicago is a true sports town!

When is the cup coming to the State House!!!???

Comment by Rudy Thursday, Jun 10, 10 @ 10:50 am

  15. ===Maybe taking a trip to Philly wasn’t the best use of your time Governor.===

Umm, didn’t you see him interviewed on the teevee, far away from the Blagojevich trial, talking positive about his hometown hockey team? Any questions about unemployment, the deficit or his former running mate?

That was no waste of time.

Comment by Rich Miller Thursday, Jun 10, 10 @ 10:53 am

  16. Fair point Rich. But they have tee-vees in Springfield too, don’t they? And I suppose, since it looks like he only has a few months left in office, he might as well enjoy the perqs while he can.

I can’t remember the name of the ABC7 reporter who interviewed him (it was Giangreco), but I think Quinn got his name wrong or confused him with someone else. I’ll have to check the tape on that one.

Hey Rich, maybe you can find out the details about his trip to the City of Brotherly Love? Does he have to disclose the ticket and airfare as a campaign conribution or on his state ethics gift disclosure?

    Comment by 47th Ward Thursday, Jun 10, 10 @ 11:00 am

  17. *wasn’t* Giangreco.

    Comment by 47th Ward Thursday, Jun 10, 10 @ 11:01 am

  18. Congrats to the Blackhawks! Enjoy your party in the Windy City! I am a huge Pens fan but I will take the high road and congratulate the Flyers on a great season. C You at the game opener in our new area!

Comment by Randy Handbag Thursday, Jun 10, 10 @ 11:05 am

  19. Hopefully this knocks some sense into those obnoxious Philly fans. Go Hawks.

    Comment by Bring Back Boone's Thursday, Jun 10, 10 @ 11:07 am

  20. In a year where we haven’t had much to be happy about, this is a ray of sunshine.

Comment by Anonymous Thursday, Jun 10, 10 @ 11:08 am

  21. Another blown chance by the IL-GOP; why didn’t Plummer release his tax returns last night in Springpatch? Jason Plummer == Dan Quayle

Comment by Angry Republican Thursday, Jun 10, 10 @ 11:09 am

  22. I hate when I have to stay up late at night, but in this case it was well worth it. Congrats to the Hawks.

As for the loss by the Flyers, it was obviously Bush’s fault.

Comment by Cincinnatus Thursday, Jun 10, 10 @ 11:23 am

  23. Congrats Blackhawks! And thanks for something positve amidst the other problems, and negative things in the news about this State (too long to list) Nice to have something good in the news in connection with Illinois.

Comment by Third Generation Chicago Native Thursday, Jun 10, 10 @ 11:32 am

  24. Quinn was interviewed on Channel 7 by Ravi Bachwal (sp?) who is from Canada and who plays on a local Chicago hockey team.
what does Quinn’s brother coach at Fenwick? do they have
a hockey team? quinn also used the tv time to advocate for
resources for kids and hockey. rich is right, good use of
the gov’s time, braving the sea of Pronger boosters to cheer
on the Hawks and get some face time on tv.

Rich, ABC 7 just showed a photo of Quigley hoisting the cup! race or no, it’s a very fun photo of another local hockey player.

Comment by Amalia Thursday, Jun 10, 10 @ 11:37 am

  25. Totally high on the win. Last night was crazy even way out in suburbs - fireworks everywhere, layered cheering in the dark distance, some farther, some closer, all unseen. I could hear whistling, screaming, car horns. Gunshots??? I think so. Hubby and son beside themselves. Now my son will shave that aweful beard! What a relief!

  26. Lol- he mispronounced Niemi

    Comment by Bring Back Boone's Thursday, Jun 10, 10 @ 12:18 pm

  27. Congrats to the Black Hawks and their fans
Can you really like a sport where the winning score cannot be seen except by super slow mo, iso close-up, spy vision camera replay — maybe?

Comment by CircularFiringSquad Thursday, Jun 10, 10 @ 12:30 pm

  28. vicotyr in OT pulling a team out of a cubesque slump, very sweet!

Cubs can now take over as the worst chicago sports team :)

Comment by Ghost Thursday, Jun 10, 10 @ 12:36 pm

  29. Due to a long-standing previous commitment, I watched the Hawks game in the concourse of Cominskey Park. Once-in-a-lifetime experience — beautiful night, the White Sox score as many runs as they usually score in a month and Hawks win the Cup in OT..

To top it off, the place was crawling with Tigers/Red Wing fans talking smack. Man, were they in the wrong place at the wrong time. Hope you enjoy the drive back to the place formerly known as Hockeytown — thanks for spending money here.

Here’s to the Sox for putting the game on so many monitors and the overtime period on the jumbo after the Sox winner (you still couldn’t see Kane’s goal).

Comment by wordslinger Thursday, Jun 10, 10 @ 12:45 pm

  30. Quinn leaves state for overnight Hawks Game.

    Navistar leaves state for good.

Comment by reality Thursday, Jun 10, 10 @ 12:46 pm

  31. Anyone else concerned about the Governor’s appearance on the tv? He looked as if he was pulled out of the stands randomly — not as if he was the figurehead of a major state. No suit and tie?

    Sheesh.

Comment by unclesam Thursday, Jun 10, 10 @ 1:10 pm

  32. unclesam, it’s 2010. Who wears a suit and tie to a hockey game?

Comment by Rich Miller Thursday, Jun 10, 10 @ 1:11 pm

  33. Rich, you’re right. But a tasteful Blackhawks Polo, or button down shirt would make him look like a chief executive instead of a beer-swilling slob (my apologies to fellow beer swilling slobs everywhere).

Comment by Cincinnatus Thursday, Jun 10, 10 @ 1:42 pm

  34. I would agree, but isn’t that what most hockey fans are? I wouldn’t know, since I’ve only been to two hockey games. Just speculation there. lol

Comment by Rich Miller Thursday, Jun 10, 10 @ 1:44 pm

  35. How many of you remember the old Chicago Stadium, and the six team NHL? The billows of cigarette and cigar smoke in the upper deck, the bathrooms, Bobby Hull, Kenny Warren, Stan Mikita, and Glenn Hall puking in a bucket before the games. Ah, those were the days…

Comment by Cincinnatus Thursday, Jun 10, 10 @ 1:57 pm

  36. Quinn at a hockey game what a joke. He kept on asking where the cake was everytime there was an icing call.

2010 is payment for all the years I fell asleep listening to lloyd petit on the transistor radio.
Here come the Hawks, the Mighty Blaaack Hawks……

Comment by Ronbo Thursday, Jun 10, 10 @ 1:58 pm

  37. Lloyd Petit was inducted in the the Hockey Hall of Fame a short six years after his retirement from calling the play-by-plays for the Hawks. Many players in the league wait far longer for their induction into the Hall. RIP, Lloyd, this one’s for you.

Comment by Cincinnatus Thursday, Jun 10, 10 @ 2:04 pm

  38. My first pro sports game was the BlackHawks. Bobby Hull & Stan Mikita! It’s been a long wait. Last night made it worth while. Thanks Rock Wirtz for being willing to win. Thanks Hawks for doing it right! The last goal was quite the shot!

Comment by Pot calling kettle Thursday, Jun 10, 10 @ 3:16 pm

  39. Happiness reigns. Thanks Hawks for a terrific season and for winning the Cup.

Comment by RobRoy Thursday, Jun 10, 10 @ 3:55 pm

  40. No he had to wear a jean shirt he could unbutton to reveal a Hawks shirt after they won.

    Comment by P. Thursday, Jun 10, 10 @ 5:08 pm

  41. oh quit complaining about Quinn and what he wore. you know all those instructions about keeping quiet cause the Philly fans would kick your butt? well, he went quiet, besides, maybe he
had the shirt buttoned up looking governor like til he got in and had some fun.

as for how to dress for hockey, if you think suit and tie or polo
or button down shirt closed up are appropriate for fun, I don’t want to hang out with you at a hockey game.

    oh, and Go Hawks.

Comment by Amalia Thursday, Jun 10, 10 @ 5:25 pm

  42. Rocky Wirtz is a genius…thanks to all in the Hawks organization!! What a thrill to watch them in the series!!

Comment by Loop Lady Thursday, Jun 10, 10 @ 6:01 pm

  43. such an unbelievably exciting and emotional night…I’ll admit I cried a bit, and I wasn’t alone…this team has heart and I can’t wait to give them the homecoming they deserve tomorrow. And then I have to figure out what I am going to do with all the free time…GO HAWKS!

Comment by nearwest side Thursday, Jun 10, 10 @ 11:42 pm

  44. Do they have to have broken teeth and those beards? Ooops! Rich, no offense intended, but beards are very, very scratchy. :) Go Blackhawks!
