Question of the day

Posted in:

* The Illinois Republican Party sent out a press release last week announcing some events at the State Fair’s annual Republican Day…

In addition, attendees can take in the music of The Brat Pack, a 1980s cover band. Songs such as, “Glory Days” and “Future’s so Bright” will fit in well with the overall theme of the day.

The Brat Pack? That band fits the “overall theme of the day”? Really?

* The Question: Which songs should the Brat Pack play during the Republican event? Snark heavily encouraged.

…Adding… Here’s the band’s poster from its merchandise page

  1. Since it is a 1980s cover band songs likes Beck’s “Loser” are out.

How about the Talking Heads “Burning Down the House”? The first line sums it up:
Watch out you might get what you’re after

In addition to the title, the fact that there’s not one white performer makes it that much more fitting.

  7. I love it. “Glory days” is about someone looking back on their glory days. “The future is so bright, I’ve got to wear shades” is about life following a nuclear attack.

  23. GIven how the IL GOP loves to throw themselves at the altar of St. Reagan, I have to second @ourMagician with “Land of Confusion”. It would be funny to see how long before they catch on to the irony.

    video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oepXF2B5NK4

Close second would be “Pass the Dutchie” by Musical Youth. Just the thought of a group as “diverse” as the IL GOP singing along with reggae, then realizing what they’re saying - ought to make anyone laugh.

  26. “I Still Believe” by Tim Capello

Partly because as an R, I feel obligated to come up with something somewhat positive–yet dark and twisted. Partly because it’s part of the “Lost Boys” soundtrack.

But mostly because I thought Tim Capello was a heckuvALOT of fun to watch on stage in the movie.

  42. Because the poster-art reminded me of that classic Madonna video! I confess to having been a Madonna fan. Hey, I was young!

    Madonna’s Material Girl:

Some pols & donors kiss me, some pols & donors hug me
    I think they’re O.K.
If they don’t give me proper tribute, fork-over the M-O-N-E-Y
    I just walk away!

They can beg and they can plead
But they can’t see the light, that’s right
‘Cause the pols & donors with the cold hard cash
are always Mister Right, ’cause we are

    [Chorus:]

    Living in a material world
and Illinois has material needs, oh boy!
You know that we are living in a material world
and BEING ME is *bleeping* gold!

Some pols & donors slow dance, some pols & donors fast-track
    That’s all right with me
If they can’t *show me the money* then I
    Have to let them be

Some pols & donors try and some pols & donors lie but
    I don’t let them play
Only pols & donors who give me their pennies
Make my rainy day, ’cause they are

    [chorus]

Living in a material world (material)
    Living in a material world
    [repeat]

Pols & donors may come and pols & donors may go
And that’s all right you see
Experience has made me rich, Rich Miller,
and everyone has their price, you see, ’cause everybody’s

    [chorus]

    A material, a material, a material, a material world

Living in a material world (material)
    Living in a material world
    [repeat and fade]

  43. Two submissions to ponder …
    first up,

Martin Briley’s “You ain’t worth the salt in my Tears”
    key lyric:
“I’m lookin’ back at the time that drifted by
But I won’t cry for the wasted years
’cause you ain’t worth the salt in my tears”

    next …
English Beat’s “Save it for later”
    key lyric:
    “Two dozen other stupid reasons
Why we should suffer for this
Don’t bother trying to explain them
Just hold my hand while I come to a decision on it.”

  45. In what universe are “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart” and “Losing My Religion” eighties songs? As for Echo & The Bunnymen, not nearly mainstream enough; The Brat Pack only does obvious songs.

Does Jason Plummer even know what the Brat Pack is?

I wouldn’t hold it against him if he didn’t, but they did both live in Champaign.
