Bill Brady’s new TV ad: “Pat Quinn sold us out”

* Sen. Bill Brady’s latest TV ad is a blistering attack on Gov. Pat Quinn over the widely vilified AFSCME endorsement/no layoff story. Rate it…

The ad was recorded off the air this evening during “Wheel of Fortune.” Here’s the script…

Pat Quinn sold us out.

When union bosses endorsed Quinn, Quinn guaranteed them jobs until June of 2012.

Using 190 million of our tax dollars.

Newspapers called Quinn’s actions, “A return to the state’s pay to play politics,” “Horrible for the state,” “A conflict,” and “A sellout for Quinn’s benefit and not ours.”

Every time he sells us out, we learn that Pat Quinn’s only priority is Pat Quinn.

We need a clean break now.

Bill Brady, governor.

The use of newspaper logos and quotes from papers besides just Chicago—a savvy and excellent touch.

“Clean Break”—a tough and clear concept(implying a break from from both PQ and Blago) that will be hard for voters to argue with when they’re in the booth casting their ballot.

Guaranteeing union jobs is such a bad thing? What’s unsaid is Brady wants to fire you if your union. It’s a fine way to fire up Quinn’s support.

I should make myself clearer. It’s a horrible ad for Brady. His angry tea party revelers get to bang the table and say how horrible Quinn is but it brings him no more votes.

What it does is start to bring home the angry union family’s that were thinking of Brady, Cohen or Whitney or not voting. They start to realize what Brady is all about. Quinn should pay for these ads.

This is not horrible for Brady. This ad is targeted to the swing voters, they sometimes are called independents. The folks that have lost their jobs or actually kept their job but had their pay reduced. These folks do not have a gaurantee that their job will be here tomorrow. The majority of voters in this state are not unionized so this is a great ad for Brady. I see a follow-up ad that talks about all the union pay hikes.

and I see ads like Brady’s got no heart, Brady wants your jobs, Bradys anti union, anti labor. Sayin what he is. Basically bringing Quinns base back home and not wandering off like they have been. You’ll see what I mean as this next month plays out. This ad will have the opposite effect it was intended to.

You are probably correct in the sense that this election will be about the stength that unions have with independants in this state.
On that basis, Brady will be the winner. The “haves” and “have nots” are divided by those that have “union jobs” and those that don’t. And the ones that don’t have public sector jobs are now spitting mad.

Just like is Brady going to have a hard time keeping his tax pledge Quinn has no chance of keeping his end of any deals with the unions. Quinn can’t deliver on the no job cuts pledge and more pension reform is a must.

downstater, if it was just about that you would be correct but there is a huge voting block in this state that are minorities and Brady will get so small a percentage of those votes it will be deplorable. If you combine that with woman’s issue votes and then bring union family’s votes back to Quinn it’s pretty formidable. You would be surprised how many union family’s are with Brady right now.

This is a very good ad, and count me as one of those voters who is tired of the way that democrats have run this state.

I’m no Edgar fan (sorry steve s.–state budget guru to recent republican administrations), but he did speak one truism for which he deserves credit when he recently criticized BOTH brady and quinn: when Edgar said that a governor has to be able to say NO! No to people and No to interests. One of the main reasons why I just cannot support Quinn for governor is ironically the perhaps one thing for which he is well known and regarded: his big heart.

But, now is not the time for having a big heartas the state’s CEO. One simply cannot run a state like Illinois, particularly with all of the trouble that it is in and not be able to say NO!

Right now Illinois needs a lean and mean governor and that never was and never will be Quinn.

If Brady is governor a lot of people will be hurt by the cuts he will HAVE to make. given Illinois’ fiscal crisis a lot of people are being hurt already. I fail to see anything good in picking at a scab bit by bit, might as well pull the dead skin away all at once, deal with the pain and get it over with a quickly as possible.

Of the two major candidates, as a moderate dem, I lean Brady because I think he will say no and mean it. Admittedly it will hurt at first, but in the longrun I think Illinois will better for it.

union employees are all already voting for quinn. They already know brady is not their friend . This seems aimed at independents. It will not do anything to make union employees more motivated to go to polls

I hate to break it to you Phineas J. But I am a card carrying member of a labor union as well are several of my friends and my wife is a teacher and several of her friends are teachers as well. Last weekend having drinks at our house with these people and politics got brought up I kept my mouth shut and just listened and I hate to break it to you these people are voting and they are not voting for Quinn. People are tired of the same old chicago politics. By the way I will be voting for Brady.

Before anybody breaks out into a chorus of “Look for the union label”, the fact of the matter is that there is a big difference between how the general public views public sector unions and blue collar union types.

Fair or not, there is a great deal of resentment/jealousy (particularly in tough economic times) toward guaranteed pay raises, nearly unmatched benefits, and nearly-impossible-to-fire government workers.

I think this ad is effective and further undermines Quinn by reminding voters that Quinn is NOT Mr. Good Government.

This ad seems to me to have less to do with unions and more to do with a push to portray Quinn as ethically challenged if not corrupt. Since presumably there are no photos of Quinn dancing with Blagojevich (glad to hear JBT is doing well in the polls–she deserves it) the Brady campaign needs to find ways of highlighting Quinn’s role in the Blago years. He was hardly an innocent bystander. I think we’ll hear more on this theme over the next month. And it’s a fair one. Bashing public employees (not that I’m a fan of the state bureaucracy)is not, nor should Brady dwell on the sensitive topic of layoffs during a persistent Great Recession.

As for the Trib poll they have SLC at 4% vs the 14% that Time had SLC at.

Not sure what to make of either of them, it would be interesting to see the Tribs cross-tabs to see how the line up with the Time poll.

Brady should tell us who he would lay off. Corrections officers? CFS caseworkers? Caregivers at the Vets” homes? Workers at the state parks? Nursing home inspectors? State police? Caregivers for the mentally ill and developmentally disabled? Who and how many? And how much will he increase the unemployment rate?

Unfortunately the person using those words has been a relative backbench insider who has been in Springfield for enough years that he was part of what created the current situation. None of the people running makes you go “Yeah, I like that”.

Production: A. Good usage of newspaper clips and the family huddled toggether at the end was a nice touch.

Content A+. The references were good and it makes the undecided voter think.

When I close my eyes and listen to the ad, it’s even better to listen to.

I’ve heard from some who think Bill needs to have some positive ads.

So, some out of context edited headlines and pull quotes from a raft of Republican-supporting newspapers is supposed to sway me?
Only if I’m woefully ignorant of the issues. I give it a passing grade for the skilled photoshop job they did to make Quinn look like Alfred Hitchcock, but the content is relatively weak and is just going to stoke union GOTV efforts.

The people who will pay the most attention to this ad will be union members and they aren’t going to like it.

This just goes to show that Brady who thinks people making the minimum wage are making too much, that teachers should forego raises, that women working the same job as a man don’t need equal pay, is the most anti worker candidate who has ever ran for Governor in Illinois.

This guy is totally out of touch.

It’s been a long time since any ad has gotten so much hate and vitriol from posters here who appear to be on the opposite side of the governor’s race. If, as many of you say, the ad is so clearly damaging to Brady and so obviously going to help your guy, (to the extent that PJW said Quinn should pay for these ads) then why are you fighting it so hard, and not sitting back to lick your chops and enjoy it as it is broadcast over Illinois airwaves? Surely you do not want Brady’s people to pull the ad, do you–if it’s helping Quinn so much?

Responsa, I really don’t care what Brady does with the ad. I do know that Quinn has had a hard time getting his message to union voters but Brady’s ad will take care of that.

BTW, I’ve been pretty tough on Quinn’s ads too.

I’m going to go against conventional wisdom here.

Despite the AFSCME endorsement, alot of the 90,000 AFSCME members and their families were leaning toward Brady.

They’ve taken a beating for the past several years and just want a boss that keeps the train running on time.

Brady’s managed to accomplish what Henry Bayer could not — ensure that every single AFSCME member votes for Quinn, and mobilize 5,000 or so to volunteer for the Democratic ticket.

Anti-union voters were ALREADY voting for Brady. But by trying to gin up his base, which was already on fire, Brady is lighting a fire under Pat Quinn’s base.

Not smart.

Well this race is about JOBS isn’t it? Why I do not know, but I think this ad doesn’t really hurt Quinn in a strange way it might help him. Especially, in southern Illinois.
