*** UPDATED x2 *** Another campaign first

Posted in:

* I don’t believe I’ve ever seen this happen in an Illinois governor’s race

Republican gubernatorial candidate Bill Brady’s mom says Pat Quinn’s latest attack ad is ridiculous.

It criticizes Brady for sponsoring a bill that would allow shelter animals to be mass-euthanized. But Nancy Brady says her son is an animal lover.

I’ve posted the Quinn campaign video a couple of times, but here it is again

This ad isn’t on the air yet. It’s only on YouTube so far.

Please, make extra special sure in comments that you remain respectful of Brady’s mother. Yes, she spoke out, but it’s his mom, for crying out loud. Go easy or be banned for life. Thanks. I’m fairly certain nobody would do that, but I don’t want to take any chances.

* Speaking of negativity, the Tribune ran a story this morning about Brady’s business

Bill Brady says he has had to make tough decisions to help his Bloomington-based development company survive in the lingering recession—and recently filed land records show that includes offering his own home as collateral for a $1.3 million business loan.

With their company already carrying millions of dollars of debt on several stagnated developments in downstate markets, Brady and his brothers resorted to putting up their family homes in Bloomington to secure the new loan from a Peoria credit union. […]

“I would be quite surprised to see a larger developer put up their personal assets,” said Terry R. Ruhland, the group’s past president, who runs a smaller Peoria-area company. “I’m sure the Brady boys are doing what the bank requires them to do. I am sure it is something they would have preferred not do, but the rules are changing for everyone.”

*** UPDATE 2 *** Bill Ward, the Executive Vice President of the Home Builders Assoc. of Illinois, just called to say that the Tribune grossly misquoted his former president. Ward insisted Terry Ruhland told the Trib that “a lot of builders are having to put up their homes as collateral” right now because of the super=steep falloff in new home construction.

[ *** End Of Update 2 *** ]

* But Quinn was chastised by the Tribune for misusing its reporting

Gov. Pat Quinn slammed Republican challenger Bill Brady over a $1.3 million loan for his home building business revealed today, saying the state senator must disclose more about his finances to voters.

But in doing so, Quinn made allegations not supported by a Tribune story that reported the loan Friday.

“He used his vote in the Senate in the past to help his business…. Now we learn it’s a failing business,” said Quinn, who went beyond what the Tribune reported.

* In other news, NBC5’s Steve Bryant reported on something that I’ve been telling you about for weeks…

Rasmussen: Cohen Taking Votes from Brady

  1. - Bill Brady’s mom says Pat Quinn’s latest attack ad is ridiculous. -

You know, what’s really ridiculous is the fact that he sponsored the bill. I mean, you can’t spin that in any positive way. Either Brady is heartless and doesn’t care about humane treatment of animals, or he just sponsors anything a donor wants him to sponsor. Attempting to spin this reminds me of an old saying about picking up a certain object from the clean end…

Comment by Small Town Liberal Friday, Oct 15, 10 @ 2:35 pm

  2. I don’t think either candidate should go there. Quinn shouldn’t go to puppy politics and Brady shouldn’t bring his mom into the fight. Having said that, I’m not sure how mom plays in Peoria.
    It could actually work.

Alexi used his mom in the primary, right?

  3. Somebody should make a list of politicians getting their mother’s involved.

  4. Rich-

Thanks for link love on the Illinois Channel video.

  5. Mother Brady can ridicule the ad, but in this case, the truth is awful. And there’s no way around it.

Comment by Chubs Mahoney Friday, Oct 15, 10 @ 2:51 pm

  6. The business issue is a bigger one than what Bill’s Mom has to say. Developers never are willing to put their own homes up and the fact they have to shows what shape Brady Homes is in.

Comment by Anonymous Friday, Oct 15, 10 @ 2:57 pm

  7. so brady wants to run the state like a private buisness: but he opposes borrowing to cover the economic downturn: but he is borrowing to cover the downturn.

also of note, brady’s business is not making painful cuts by selling off its devalued property, its borrowing to sustain the current holdings until times improve….

Comment by Ghost Friday, Oct 15, 10 @ 2:57 pm

  8. I really feel that the ad is a missed opportunity. You can’t label someone a dog killer and not expect it to backfire. You need to compare and contrast it. I had some of that to say about it here: http://aaronkrager.com/2010/10/14/quinn-labeling-brady-as-dog-killer/

  10. Actually, Brady shows a lot of character in putting up his personal assets or home for a business loan.

Most small businessmen or businesswomen do that every day.

    Why are some ridiculing this?

    Comment by Louis G. Atsaves Friday, Oct 15, 10 @ 3:02 pm

  11. These animals are forced into the gas chamber where they scratch, claw and bite in fear and desperation for up to forty-five minutes while they are being killed.

This is not humane and no animal lover would advocate this kind of treatment and certainly would not try to make it the law of the land.

Bill Brady in no animal lover.

    Comment by (618) Democrat Friday, Oct 15, 10 @ 3:05 pm

  12. “Quinn shouldn’t go to puppy politics…”

What else does Quinn have? Brady/Plummers tax returns? Please. It’s time to let it rip. He can bury Brady on this one. Remember when they had that dog that was caught in traffic on I-290 on WGN News morning news for two days running?

    Comment by Pioneer P. Friday, Oct 15, 10 @ 3:11 pm

  13. So lets spend more money we don’t have on homeless animals. Quinn should form a commission to study this.

Comment by Anonymous Friday, Oct 15, 10 @ 3:22 pm

  14. Doesn’t bother me that she chimes in. The bill doesn’t even bother me that much, people put animals down all the time.

What bothers me is that here was a guy who just won the GOP nomination for governor, like winning the freaking super bowl for this guy, and he has no political instincts at all that tell him not to do this bill which was clearly at the behest of one of his buddies. His political naivety bothers me the most.

Of course, he’s running against Quinn so I should just shut up now.

Comment by Siriusly Friday, Oct 15, 10 @ 3:25 pm

  15. Walter Jacobson’s comments confirm what many originally thought: he should have stayed retired! I wish the rest of us - including hard-working prosecutors everywhere - were as perfect and mistake-free as Jacobson.

Comment by Xgman Friday, Oct 15, 10 @ 3:26 pm

  16. I’m stunned this wasn’t Quinn’s first ad. The record is clear, Brady’s position was both opportunistic and atrocious, and it shows how he has no principles whatsoever. It will tag Brady in a way nothing else can.

It is like Kirk’s military misstatements - it may not make anyone vote for Quinn, but it will make some people hesitate about voting for Brady.

Comment by Berkeley Bear Friday, Oct 15, 10 @ 3:26 pm

  17. 618 DEM - thanks for the info. I retract my earlier statement. The bill does bother me.

Comment by Siriusly Friday, Oct 15, 10 @ 3:29 pm

  18. Just because she is the mother of the legislator/candidate in question doesn’t mean that Mrs. Brady is an expert on every bill her son has ever been invovled with. She’ll still think that he is a good boy, even if that is far from the truth.

Comment by fedup dem Friday, Oct 15, 10 @ 3:30 pm

  19. Was this bill passed? Was this bill signed into law? Were any animals ever at risk for being euthanized in the way protrayed?

The answer to these questions is no, no, no.

Did Quinn hire an unprepared, unqualified, DOC Director? Did that Director expand a program that allowed some violent convicted felons out of prison before their terms were up? Did Quinn support that rogue Director despite evidence proving his incompetence?

The answer to those questions is yes, yes, yes.

No “puppies” were harmed by a bill that was not passed.

Innocent people were harmed by a policy put into effect on Pat Quinn’s watch.

There is no contest here. What Brady did was ill advised politics. He withdrew his support once it came to light. What Quinnn did harmed PEOPLE. He compounded that by supporting the person who put the plan into motion.

What Brady’s mother did was what many mothers do - support their sons.

Comment by dupage dan Friday, Oct 15, 10 @ 3:30 pm

  20. Actually small, Quinn’s mum got mad and spoke out about Dan Hynes’ effective MGT Push ads against her son. Gee, maybe if her son hadn’t started a secret early prison release program?

Adlyth, Quinn’s mum is still alive.

I don’t know why Brady, who IS an animal lover, has never mentioned that his family’s beloved dog, Lady, recently passed away. I guess he just wants to stick with the issues. Go figure.

    Comment by A Trusted Source Friday, Oct 15, 10 @ 3:30 pm

  21. Just to clarify when I write stick with the issues, of course I mean the issues that matter!

Quinn wants to go gutter and bring up ugliness, I only hope that he is rewarded on election night and given the boot!

    Comment by A Trusted Source Friday, Oct 15, 10 @ 3:32 pm

  22. - So lets spend more money we don’t have on homeless animals. -

This may be the most unintelligent comment I’ve ever seen on this blog. Congrats.

  23. I love the bit about the Tribune chastising the Governor. How dare thou not read the Tribune’s gospel literally. God forbid that there are free-thinking Illinois citizens, and events not stated in their gospel.

    Comment by Quinn-bashing fad Friday, Oct 15, 10 @ 3:41 pm

  24. @dupage dan - So Brady only tried to do something awful and inhumane And as soon as his attempt came under public scrutiny, he slinked away from it?

    Okay, got it.

  25. I have to believe that Bill Brady’s mom knows him better than every biased opinion on this blog (including my biased opinion) so I’ll take her word that he is in fact an animal lover. Probably loves her, baseball and apple pie as well. Good for him.

Brady introduced this bill for a constituent. Was it dumb, sure, maybe even idiotic considering he had just won a primary election for governor, but this bill was never even heard in committee. He realized it was a bad idea (mostly poltically), gave it away, and it was subsequently tabled.

Quinn is making hay with it, and that is what Brady gets for being dumb. But don’t waste our time with all your holier than though inhumane crap cause we all know this is political and nothing else.

By the way, read the bill. Today in Illinois it is OK to gas puppies. You just have to do it one at a time. The deal that was worked on for two years (line from the video) allows vets to gas puppies. So Heather Steans and John Fritchey actually passed a bill that allows for the gassing of puppies. Puppy Killers! All Brady’s bill would have done is to allow a vet to use his or her professional judgement as to whether to gas one puppy at a time, or more than one. I’d have to guess that vets would be the best equipped people in this state to make those decisions, but maybe not. Heck, maybe Bill thought the puppies would actually like some company while sucking in all that carbon monoxide. Either way, the end result is the same for the puppy.

Comment by Jaded Friday, Oct 15, 10 @ 3:43 pm

  26. Should be holier “than thou”, not though. I am guessing there may be other typos in that treatise as well. I should re-read better before I post. Sorry.

Comment by Jaded Friday, Oct 15, 10 @ 3:46 pm

  27. @ATS - What exactly is “gutter” about Pat Quinn raising issues about legislation that Bill Brady sponsored?

There’s not doubt that the subject matter of the ad is revolting, but that is due to the very nature of Brady’s mass-gassing bill.

Jaded, please take every opportunity presented to you to come to the defense of Bill Brady and his mass-gassing bill. Seriously. You should probably write about this full-time until the election.

  29. - But don’t waste our time with all your holier than though inhumane crap cause we all know this is political and nothing else. -

Ok, so Brady being dumb enough to blindly do whatever a donor asks him to doesn’t suggest anything more than poor political sense? Gee, I wonder what I could get Brady to do for a donation, the possibilities are endless.

Comment by Small Town Liberal Friday, Oct 15, 10 @ 3:51 pm

  30. I cringe anytime politicians allow family members to put themselves in the public eye. Once you put yourself out there as a public figure, it’s katy bar the door…

Just think of all the nasty stuff you’ve read or seen over the years about the Bush Twins, Chelsea, Amy Carter, etc.

So far so good with the adorable Obama kids, as far as I can tell.

Comment by wordslinger Friday, Oct 15, 10 @ 3:56 pm

  31. When I and my two partners were in business, it was standard proceedure for our conservative rural bank to ask us to pledge our homes for collateral on our business loans. It made no difference as to how much we borrowed from them (whether it was $1,500 or $15,000,000). It was just their bank’s standard operating policy. I am sure that back then perhaps some banks didn’t require their borrowers to pledge personal assets. We never hesitated to pledge our homes as collateral. Our business assets always easily exceeded whatever we borrowed. We understood the reasons why a bank would want some skin in the game. We always had a multi-million dollar line of credit available in case we needed it. I am just attempting to point out that Brady and his brothers pledging their homes as collateral with a bank is “no big deal”. It does not even remotely mean that the Brady brothers were in any financial trouble at all just because they were asked to pledge their homes as collateral on their bank loan.

Comment by Cool Hand Luke Friday, Oct 15, 10 @ 4:00 pm

  32. To echo Jaded, but more dimplomatically, many people experienced in working with shelter animals actually support Brady’s bill. It gives the veterinarian the ability to use their professional judgement in choosing the euthanasia procedure and requires them to use the most humane practices. To say the Quinn ad takes liberties with the truth is an understatement.

Comment by Pundeete Friday, Oct 15, 10 @ 4:03 pm

  33. “Gee, I wonder what I could get Brady to do for a donation, the possibilities are endless.”

Make a donation, you never know. I wonder what the SEIU is going to get from Quinn for the $3 million they’ve pumped into his campaign. The possibilities are endless.

“Jaded, please take every opportunity presented to you to come to the defense of Bill Brady and his mass-gassing bill.”

Not defending the bill, I said it was STUPID. I was actually being sarcastic with that “puppy company comment” but quite frankly I wouldn’t expect you to get past your righteous indignation to consider that possibility. Either way, I could care less.

Comment by Jaded Friday, Oct 15, 10 @ 4:05 pm

=Heck, maybe Bill thought the puppies would actually like some company while sucking in all that carbon monoxide.=
We now know Brady didn’t have to worry about offending some of his supporters by trying to pass this inhumane gas chamber killing of animals. They apparently think it’s a joke.

    You can’t defend the indefensible!

    Comment by (618) Democrat Friday, Oct 15, 10 @ 4:16 pm

  36. Regarding Walter Jacobson and “Prosecutors Should Be Held Accountable”: Based on an eyewitness identification at that time and a series of other collaborating matching “coincidences”, I can’t say as I blame Will County’s States-Attorney Jim Glasgow for calling for the arrest of the individual. Glasgow and the Will County Sheriff had to make a quick judgement call in order to get what appeared to be the killer off of the streets and to protect the public. They quickly reversed their decision when they found additional evidence to confirm the suspect’s alibi. They chose to error in favor of the public’s safety until they could confirm the suspect’s alibi. It was all quickly resolved. It was unfortunate but they didn’t have the luxury of spending days pondering upon the guilt or innocense of what appeared to be the killer (at that time).

  37. - I wonder what the SEIU is going to get from Quinn for the $3 million they’ve pumped into his campaign. -

They wouldn’t get Quinn to sponsor legislation allowing animals to be treated inhumanely. Are you having trouble grasping this?

Comment by Small Town Liberal Friday, Oct 15, 10 @ 4:20 pm

  38. Wordslinger, Speaking of katy bar the door and publicly using family to get elected, isn’t there already an ad featuring Katy (or Katie?) Brady?

And right, everybody, mothers are supposed to love their sons, so if Mrs. Brady wants to let us know that she loves Bill and he loved his dog, so what? It would be a lot more interesting if she decided to tell us that she prefers Pat Quinn.

  39. “You can’t defend the indefensible!”

Riiiiggghht. Kinda like the early release program huh.

While we’re still on the subject I also don’t think Fritchey and Steans are puppy killers. That was sarcasm as well.

I did, however, read the bill (and the public act passed in ‘09) and still think that vets know a whole heck of a lot more about what is good and not good for animals than nearly every person blogging on this issue. So, no, other than being POLITICALLY STUPID, the bill really doesn’t bother me.

May be the one and only time I sort of agree with you.
Lots of voters I know are deciding that Quinn is more incompetent than Brady is shady.

  41. The mass killing of animals is horrific and to support legislation regarding mass euthanization of animals the first thing out of the gate is enormously stupid. That to me goes right to the root of who this guy is.

We have a governor who can’t govern and a potential governor who scares the bejesus out of me with his puppy killing support.

Gotta love his Mom for trying to help him. My hat’s off to her. As for Brady…..? Whitney is starting to look pretty good.

  46. No, the Bradys putting their homes up is a big deal. These guys have been above doing this for years because they played the “if you want our business these are our terms” and if you don’t like it, the bank down the street will. The fact that they now must put up their residences should be and is a sign of what their business situation is.

Comment by ourMagician Friday, Oct 15, 10 @ 4:56 pm

  47. Brady’s casual attitude towards women and gay’s civil rights matches that expressed to the easy extermiation of puppies. His mother’s defense doesn’t reassure me.

Comment by Wensicia Friday, Oct 15, 10 @ 5:18 pm

  48. The untold story is how Brady pulled his bill upon getting early word that the Bush admin wasn’t going to back FutureGen. Brady’s plan was for a massive, Brady Homes built chamber beneath Mattoon where all the state’s unwanted animals (?? and unemployed??) would be shipped for mass euthanasia, the gas provided by the state-of-the art coal-fired power plant, whose emissions would be pumped underground to the Brady chamber.

Bush pulled the plug so Brady quickly abandoned sponsorship.

Comment by Piling on Friday, Oct 15, 10 @ 6:23 pm

  49. What gets me is that when the heat came from sponsoring the bill, what did he do? Take responsibility and table it? Nope. He took his name off and gave it to someone else. Leadership … gotta love it!

  51. I have worked 25 years in construction, the contractors put there money on the line every day. I know for fact they will borrow money to make payroll, bond work, pay benefits, workers comp insurance and so on. 1.3 million probably would not make a weeks payroll with some of these bigger shops..

    Comment by conda67 Friday, Oct 15, 10 @ 8:05 pm

  52. The puppy bill was sloppy politics.
    Get over it.
Trying to read more into this really just exposes you to your own level of prejudices.

Those who are claiming to be shocked obviously have never had to make the kind of decisions that need to be made daily at an animal shelter. On their budget. Have they?

You want to know what goes on in an animal shelter? Do you really? Well, trust me, these people aren’t animal haters. They live in the real world. It was their requests that created the bill, not Brady’s, or are you actually thinking that NO ONE really wanted this bill and Brady just came up with this from the top of his head?

Get real. The entire issue is a misstep, but stop declaring that it is some kind of expose about him. It isn’t.

Life is ugly, even in a puppy pound. If you can’t handle it, at least shut up long enough for those willing to live it, make the tough decisions that need to be made now and then. Stop belittling them.

Again, a stupid call on the part of Brady, but it is better than releasing felons to find them killing someone. People are more important than puppies in the real world, and I love puppies.

Comment by VanillaMan Friday, Oct 15, 10 @ 8:53 pm

  53. Either way Rich Whitey is going to win, so you might as well vote for him. ;)

Comment by FDR Saturday, Oct 16, 10 @ 12:50 am

  54. As a cat lover, the idea of mass-killing animals is beyond heinous and cruel. We live across the river from St. Louis and remember well when multiple animals were routinely “euthanized” in the old city facilities. In recent years, a dog didn’t die right away but was found struggling and terrified under the bodies of other unfortunate animals. He was one of the lucky ones, he was rescued rather than subjected to another round. His story made headlines.

Horrific mass-killing is no way to treat animals. With all of the government waste, if funds for proper and humane killing of poor unwanted homeless animals can’t be found, that doesn’t say much about us as humans.

I have never voted for any Republican in my life. Brady will be no exception.
