* Everything always gets so serious and divisive this time of the year. It’s time for a little diversion.

Bob Sirott interviewed Gov. Pat Quinn the other day. Sirott is a laid-back interviewer, and Quinn picked up on the vibe. I’ve never seen the governor do this before, but it’s pretty darned funny

Huh?

* Sirott also asked the governor about what could happen if he’s no longer in public service. Check it out

Go Sox.

  3. Announcing for the White Sox? Can you imagine?

“It’s a one-run game and a full count folks. Three balls, two strikes. I had strikes against me once when I was Governor. The unions were striking at the Congress Hotel if I remember. And about those unions, man, I wonder what Jerry is doing. Which reminds me, wouldn’t it be great if Balanoff and Morrison put together a new cartoon called Tom & Jerry? Oh I know, there is one like that already, but it could be, you know, an update. What’s that? He struck out the side? Oh, sorry folks.”

  4. Happy Warriors tend to get elected. Notice how little we see them in Illinois. Advice to candidates: Lighten up a little and try some self-deprecation, it will take you a long, long way.

  5. So he could team up with Ken Harrelson. Let’s hope he doesn’t replace the Hawk.

  6. Self-deprecation was a cornerstone of Blagojevich’s appeal to the public. Look how well it served him . . . and Illinois.

  7. No Anonymous — Rod was self-delusional…

  8. Anonymiss - LOL You took the words out of my mouth. The game would be over before Quinn was done introducing the teams.

Imagine the riff we might get as a runner advanced. “Ramirez just made it to first base. That reminds me of the first time I got to “first base.” I was on a date with…”

  9. Bah humbug. Blago could be pretty funny too even before the tapes hit the fan, and Daley/Obama have the pol market on Sox fandom cornered. There are only three things anyone will ever remember about Pat Quinn are 1) helping to create CUB (the highlight of his career), 2) throwing his own reform commission under the bus and 3) the early prisoner release debacle.

  12. That stupid question came from the ridiculous Beltway premise that everybody is as hip to what’s going to be printed in tomorrow’s NY Times as George Stephanopoulus. I bet he’s amazing at cocktail parties in Georgetown.

But I want to give a shout out and my special thanks to Tea Party leader Ginni Thomas for reminding a whole generation that is too young to remember that Justice Clarence Thomas very likely lied under oath 19 years ago. Keep up the good work Ginni!

  13. I thought that Clarence Thomas thing was overblown anyway. I mean doesn’t everyone talk about the latest XXX cinematography with their support staff? Geesh, what’s the big deal.

Of course the flip side is when your appointed for life, your wife can do all the stupid things in the world, and you don’t really care.

    sorry

  15. Very relaxed Quinn and likeable. I think he’s resigned to defeat and has come to terms with it. Sort of the funny, likeable Bob Dole who showed up after his defeat many moons ago.

  16. More Cub fans than Sox fans in Illinois, Brady a sure winner now.

  19. Pat Quinn and Harry Carey together.

    Discuss.

Comment by archpundit Wednesday, Oct 20, 10 @ 4:37 pm

  20. Harry: You know I used to work in St. Louis

Pat: We are going to have high speed rail to St. Louis perhaps the rickets can save some money and use that to get the team down there.

Harry: But Pat how would they get back.

Pat: Well Harry, we will have high speed rail both ways.

Harry: Wow, that’s amazing. Check out the kid in the sombrero…

Comment by OneMan Wednesday, Oct 20, 10 @ 4:45 pm

  21. RobRoy: If you think the Gov is resigned to defeat, you have not seen him as of late.

  22. Brady should loop the goofy sound clip for about 30 seconds, and run it for a new commercial. At least we would get a good laugh instead of negative ads for a change in this political season.

Comment by Concerned Voter Wednesday, Oct 20, 10 @ 5:25 pm

  23. You joke about Quinn calling ballgames, but his ability to riff and command of trivia makes him an ideal color man… especially if it rains!

Comment by Gregor Wednesday, Oct 20, 10 @ 6:08 pm

  24. Any you know, it’s telling; that Quinn is so consistent with his “dream”… they say the key to success in life is to do what you love, to do that which you’d be willing to do for free, you love it so much. And that’s Quinn with the focus on public issue advocacy. Whatever else you like or don’t about him, he’s true to himself on this, I think.

Cincy, good call. I think that’s right, and when it’s not, it should be.

You can parse it, and find examples where maybe it’s not true, but optimism is and should be this country’s calling card.

Warts and all, through all the bumps in the road, the history of the USA is one of incredible progress in a hurry.

There’s change, change, change, all the time, but it’s magnificent and the wonder of the world.
