* As with last night, I won’t be able to watch the WTTW debate tonight at 7, so please help out in comments. Y’all did a great job last night. Let’s try it again. Thanks much.

SATURDAY: Cohen wraps up the week with an appearance with Reverend Jesse Jackson at Rainbow PUSH on Saturday morning at 10:00 a.m.
Not quite. I called Rainbow PUSH and was told that this is their traditional candidates event. It’s open to all candidates who want to come. Cohen won’t be speaking. Rev. Jackson will simply be acknowledging the candidates in the room and what they’re running for.

Would someone please remind Senator Brady that Governor Mitch Daniels of Indiana RAISED TAXES. That’s how he balanced his state’s budget: He RAISED TAXES.

This will be an interesting evening. Like Kirk, Brady will be running a bit of a hostile gauntlet.
Quinn has to go after Brady hard. He obviously has no other choice, but the most interesting part is contemplating his pre-debate selections on where to attack and how. He as to avoid the pit Alexi fell into last night by being over-aggressive, but I think Quinn is far too experienced to fall in. Carol Marin is likely to help Quinn, as she has never struck me a big fan of Republican policies, though she may like individuals quite well.
Brady has the challenge of meeting this charge head on. He has to avoid his tendency towards wooden debate performances. Bill Brady does many public speaking roles well, such as speeches, talking to people one on one, and talking to voters on the campaign trail, but the debate format simply is not his strength. He needs to come across tonight. Marin is very unlikely to let him play rope-a-dope and slip by with no specifics.

I agree. Quinn is doing surprisingly well by actually answering questions and not rambling.
Brady (who I voted for) is trying too hard to keep going back to this guy BlagojevichQuinn. Brady needs to talk about what he would do and quit trying to tie Quinn to Blago.

Marin just brought up Brady’s TV ad problem. Brady gave the boilerplate answer, but made the mistake of stopping. Allowed Quinn to get an easy, but perfect, line in: “Sounds to me like you didn’t pay your bills.”

Brady is incoherent about abortion. He wants to ban abortion but not criminalize it. If Brady wouldn’t punish the mother who gets an illegal abortion, then who would he punish?

Oh my, Brady really struggled with the abortion question. Carol asked three times what the penalty should be for a woman who had an abortion, if abortion were illegal. Brady tried to dodge so hard, but failed miserably.
And then when asked if he would change the law, if he could, to make abortion illegal…Brady’s response was, “I don’t have that power.”
I mean, I don’t think it’ll kill his support or anything, but that was a good-sized gaffe.

Quinn continues to actually answer questions.
Brady immediately falls back on either prepared responses (income taxes, abortion, etc) or hits his standard talking points even if he strays from the questions.

Example - on immigration, Quinn actually answered both questions with a no and yes. Brady gave talking points but couldn’t bring himself to say that he supports the AZ law or opposes the Dream Act.

Not I, Eastside. Don’t even know that I’ll vote for him. But I’ve seen enough debates, and I understand what hedging is, and Brady’s doing his best to hedge.
I actually think it’s pretty smart, because his goal tonight has to be not to screw up. Quinn’s the one who needs to make up some ground (especially since the good folks downstate can’t watch this).
So yes, Quinn won the debate (in my eyes). I just don’t think Brady choked anything away, so he’ll probably come out of it in good shape.

Quinn was far more confident and relaxed than he was in his primary debate with Hynes. Bill was pretty good as well but I think Quinn won this one.

Well, not a rout, but a Quinn win. For once, he didn’t ramble, he smiled like a normal person was aggressive and passionate without going over the top.
Brady wasn’t terrible (but the sweating was bad) but Quinn was able to deflect most of the punches and landed quite a few of his own.
I don’t work for Quinn, but I’ll sure vote for him.

Both candidates got some good jabs in tonite but Brady won the debate and it will not be a game changer in the polls. Besides it was on WTTW and everyone is watching the World Series except for political hacks. I’d start packing my bags if I were any of the Quinn govt. bureaucrats posting here.

SO where was Rich Whitney? Ah, outside doing a protest because WTTW and the City Club, like the League of Women Voters said that was his place.
So, what did we get, two career pols arguing and muddying up the waters of Illinois. Neither one will be able to govern well enough to get us off the dime.
Bet anyone a hundred dollars, that Quinn or Brady will steal Whitney’s idea to tax high risk investment transactions on the Chgo (and other) Merc. It will bring in billions. Oh, did I say billions - just what Illinois needs.

Quinn came across as more relaxed and comfortable in this one. Sometimes it helped (made the crowd laugh), other times it hurt a little bit (his constant interruptions grew tiresome).
All in all, Quinn’s best performance thus far, though not a game-changer. Had he been on the money from day 1, it may have been a different story.
Quinn scored a few points but Brady played defense well. Achieved the objective of avoifing any major gaffes, but also missed some opportunities to land a few stronger punches against Quinn.
Tie goes to the aggressor tonight - Quinn - but not enough to turn the tide.

@Doug - not a great idea to hike taxes on transactions at the Merc. I work in this industry. Trading activity is very fungible and there are scores of exchanges like the Merc around the world. If transaction costs suddenly get raised at the Merc, traders will shift their trades to other exchanges, and the Merc and all the businesses that work with the Merc will suffer. Not good for Illinois.

I don’t really have a dog in this fight since state government is really not the focus on the north shore aside from getting rid of as many local democrats as possible, so I am not as biased as last night.
Can some tie company in chicago offer the governor a new tie? he wears this thing every single day.
My guess is if you went back to the hynes debates 90 percent of the lines and remarks were the same. Both men seemed to find their own zingers/jokes extremely funny. Quinn seems to think himself a natural comedian. I feel for his son or flak who have probably heard the boovation joke about 1.3 million times. My guess is that gives him almost as much fun as putting on his purple tie.
there was also a point in the debate where they came dangerously close to plugging capitolfax blog.
also for notre dame fans this could be called the brady quinn debate. Maybe next time the candidates will have last names of ron and powlus or joe and montana or rick and mirer. Sorry had to get that in.

Bored Now: “Get serious” he’s as serious as anyone running for office - what he doesn’t have is money which the media likes for ads. if u haven’t voted, I hope you will consider Rich in 2010.
Bluejay: this is like a major league team that threatens to leave town un less they get a new stadium. I don’t think the trading will leave Chgo high and dry. It’s a better public policy to have the wealthier pay more of the fright than Illinois’ poorer people.

doug- i’m a huge whitney fan–but blue jay has a point…. the same analogy of some jobs which left illinois for the southern state may apply here too…. if you tax something such as trading in an onerous sense–the volume WILL go down–too many other states would gladly capitalize on such
a mistake.
a personal tax increase on large wage earners–would be preferable.
additionally, there are alot of people who work at the merc who are hard working people that could lose their jobs—and are just support staff over there, from what i have read. we can’t afford to hurt them.

I guess it’s late enough for me to say something semi-pro Brady in regard to this stupid ad glitch. How dare these TV stations make a campaign issue of this error. The man is spending millions at their companies and they publically embarrass him.
If I were Brady, I would get things straitened out and then publically announce that I was pulling my ads from the stations that publically embarrassed me.

I am 100 percent with Whitney on changing the state’s regressive income tax structure but as others have said these trading activities don’t have to stay in Chicago and they WILL LEAVE to avoid paying billions of dollars of tax (if there was a universe where they couldn’t defeat the bill before it even got placed into a committee via lobbying).
The only reason Chicago has these markets is as part of the trading legacy from the old days when Midwestern farmers had to ship their grain here to be sold and their animals here to be slaughtered. But things have changed a lot and they can really locate their marketplace anywhere and it won’t matter.
Look, I am one of the most anti-Wall Street, anti-financial industry, eat the rich sort of people you will find yet realistically so as much as it might feel good to do something like Whitney’s transaction tax it really isn’t in the end a very effective way to make the wealthier pay more at all.

Just got done watching the debate repeat. My immediate reaction is these two made Alexi-Kirk look like Lincoln-Douglas. Wow.
What a couple of petty, incompetent liars the both of them.
Quinn was OTT know-it-all, superman/everyman political hack with his bragging about being at the first ever Bulls game in Chicago and being at the Blackhawks game 6 and throwing out that Glee on the Web site thing over and over and namedropping Abner Mikva at least twice and foolishness about the AFSCME endorsement. I did think he got some punches in there on legislative scholarships and bringing up Brady being in there for 17 years. I totally forgot that Quinn ran against Ryan as secretary of state.
On the other hand, Brady seemed condescending to Carol a few times with his responses and outright smarmy a lot of the time in the debate. The chuckle about the cat and dog euthanasia bill with Carol felt creepy on both their parts. I thought he was a lot weaker toward the end and IIRC despite all the attacks that got in there I don’t think he brought up the prisons thing at all?
p.s. When and why was Carol Marin in Livingston County? Asking the people of Pontiac who they want to see the next mayor of Chicago?

I just finished watching the debate. By the end I was tired. Quinn came across as trying to be very slick, without any slickiness. Brady nailed him in the middle of lies on TV multiple times…and Brady ain’t my ideal PI. So, I guess I will leave it at this: Quinn has had a chance and failed. Miserably. Tonight did nothing to inspire me that he can change the direction of the state or Springfield. There is no other rational option on the ballot. My vote goes to Brady and I wish him the best. The state needs a spark. Fast.

Doug Dobmeyer: i don’t vote for people who tilt at windmills and i don’t vote for people who won’t organize. i’m interested in candidates who can actually run a government, and if you can’t even organize a decent campaign — including raising the requisite amount of money — then you can’t run a government. i wasted my vote in 2006, and won’t ever do so again (already voted for quinn)…

I watched most of the debate last night. I am generally of the view that change is needed in Springfield, but I thought that Quinn won last night’s debate.
The thing that puzzles me about Quinn, though, is that his answers and his tone and body language don’t seem to convey the proper sense of urgency, given the sorry condition of the state’s finances. Why is he not conveying a sense of anger about the budget gap and promising to crack heads to solve it? People are very upset and concerned about this, and I think his lack of alignment with the mood of the state’s voters on this issue is a key reason why he’s been trailing in the polls.
