Gubernatorial debate live-blog

Posted in:

* As with last night, I won’t be able to watch the WTTW debate tonight at 7, so please help out in comments. Y’all did a great job last night. Let’s try it again. Thanks much.

* By the way, this is from Scott Lee Cohen’s latest press release…

SATURDAY: Cohen wraps up the week with an appearance with Reverend Jesse Jackson at Rainbow PUSH on Saturday morning at 10:00 a.m.

Not quite. I called Rainbow PUSH and was told that this is their traditional candidates event. It’s open to all candidates who want to come. Cohen won’t be speaking. Rev. Jackson will simply be acknowledging the candidates in the room and what they’re running for.

…Adding… Here’s a video while we wait. Bill Brady at last night’s tea party rally

…Adding More… If Gov. Quinn loses, I will definitely miss making these mix tapes

  1. Bill - next time get the grammar correct.

It is “For Nancy and me” not “For Nancy and I”.

Take out “Nancy” and that is clear. For me this election..

    Geez

I know the Brady campaign is having some cash flow issues, but can’t they afford the google?

“In a Quinn Administration, it’s ‘Everybody In, Nobody Out,” Quinn told the gay newsweekly.

Even worse is goofy Quinn talking about himself in the third person.

  8. This will be an interesting evening. Like Kirk, Brady will be running a bit of a hostile gauntlet.

Quinn has to go after Brady hard. He obviously has no other choice, but the most interesting part is contemplating his pre-debate selections on where to attack and how. He as to avoid the pit Alexi fell into last night by being over-aggressive, but I think Quinn is far too experienced to fall in. Carol Marin is likely to help Quinn, as she has never struck me a big fan of Republican policies, though she may like individuals quite well.

Brady has the challenge of meeting this charge head on. He has to avoid his tendency towards wooden debate performances. Bill Brady does many public speaking roles well, such as speeches, talking to people one on one, and talking to voters on the campaign trail, but the debate format simply is not his strength. He needs to come across tonight. Marin is very unlikely to let him play rope-a-dope and slip by with no specifics.

  13. good god, the used car salesman cannot explain what he will cut. liking that Quinn is going with the Budgeting for Results that Brady voted against.

    Marin is tougher than Ponce.

  15. Quinn is beating Brady bad, Brady is looking weak.

Comment by wndycty Thursday, Oct 28, 10 @ 7:19 pm

  16. The Christie mix up is a good one to hit at Brady. Quinn getting tough at Brady that Blago is not his partner. Meow!!!! carol’s gonna have to separate them.

Comment by Amalia Thursday, Oct 28, 10 @ 7:20 pm

  17. I agree. Quinn is doing surprisingly well by actually answering questions and not rambling.

Brady (who I voted for) is trying too hard to keep going back to this guy BlagojevichQuinn. Brady needs to talk about what he would do and quit trying to tie Quinn to Blago.

Comment by Another Anonymous Thursday, Oct 28, 10 @ 7:20 pm

  18. If you had “Governor Blagojevich’s Partner”, or any variation thereof, in the drinking game…well, I’d call in sick for tomorrow right about now.

Same if you had “Senator Brady refused to vote to cut his own pay.”

Comment by Concerned Observer Thursday, Oct 28, 10 @ 7:20 pm

  19. *Brady won’t say how he’d make the pension payment.
*Brady won’t say what he’d cut to balance the budget.
    * Brady claims he “was the first person to stand up against Gov. Ryan.” Funny, I don’t rememmber Brady criticizing George while he was in office. The only Republicans who did were Salvi and Peter Fitzgerald.

Comment by Reformer Thursday, Oct 28, 10 @ 7:21 pm

  20. Apparently, this is what Quinn has been resting up for. He’s alleged George Ryan is Brady’s Blago and now we’re on legislative scholarships.

Comment by Chuck Thursday, Oct 28, 10 @ 7:22 pm

  21. I think Brady looks strong.

Comment by reagan Thursday, Oct 28, 10 @ 7:22 pm

  22. Quinn looks desperate

Comment by reagan Thursday, Oct 28, 10 @ 7:23 pm

  23. Marin just brought up Brady’s TV ad problem. Brady gave the boilerplate answer, but made the mistake of stopping. Allowed Quinn to get an easy, but perfect, line in: “Sounds to me like you didn’t pay your bills.”

Comment by Concerned Observer Thursday, Oct 28, 10 @ 7:24 pm

  24. One of these guys is going to lose the fake smile well before this is over. My money is on Brady. He seems to have underestimated PQ, just as Sheila underestimated Plummer.

Comment by Chuck Thursday, Oct 28, 10 @ 7:25 pm

  25. Quinn is getting owned thus far…. although the question about brady not paying tv station advertising money made him look bad.

Comment by Joe Blow Thursday, Oct 28, 10 @ 7:25 pm

  26. How does Quinn look so physically healthy, and seem so calm, when he is behind in the polls? every candidate I’ve worked with who is behind looks like hell. Quinn looks happy and he’s kicking
    Brady’s ass tonight!

Comment by Amalia Thursday, Oct 28, 10 @ 7:25 pm

  27. Quinn denies saying “Brady doesn’t want gay people to exist.” There better not be a tape.

Comment by Chuck Thursday, Oct 28, 10 @ 7:27 pm

  28. Quinn may have been winning early, but I think it all changed…refuting some sort of quote (I had tuned out for a second) and Brady bounced right on top of it. Nice work by Bill.

Comment by Concerned Observer Thursday, Oct 28, 10 @ 7:27 pm

  32. Seventeen years in Springfield, and Brady can tell us what he’s against, not what he’s accomplished.

Comment by Reformer Thursday, Oct 28, 10 @ 7:29 pm

  33. Prediction: Brady will bring a hankie to future debates.

Comment by Chuck Thursday, Oct 28, 10 @ 7:30 pm

  34. and now she’s talking about Brady leaving his taxes available for only a three hours! he’s proud that he gave 6 years in three hours!?! and he’s attacking Quinn for how he releases his taxes?
Carol is kicking him and he’s telling Carol what the law is, that it is a personal issue. yikes.

Comment by Amalia Thursday, Oct 28, 10 @ 7:31 pm

  35. Brady just said “Michael Madigan… Practically the Governor under Quinn” HAHAHAHAHAHHAA

Comment by Joe Blow Thursday, Oct 28, 10 @ 7:31 pm

  36. I think Brady said he’d cut the municipal share of the income tax. Mayors will go ballistic.

Comment by Reformer Thursday, Oct 28, 10 @ 7:32 pm

  37. Quinn better not be lying about the tax return thing (he says anyone can show up during business hours and get his returns for the last six years). Because I know where any self-respecting reporter should be at 8:30AM tomorrow.

Comment by Concerned Observer Thursday, Oct 28, 10 @ 7:32 pm

  38. AFSCME, negotiated settlement, Quinn says he’s the first to get concessions.

if he loses, which is likely, we must point to a very poorly run campaign. cause the candidate is excellent tonight.

Comment by Amalia Thursday, Oct 28, 10 @ 7:32 pm

Comment by Amalia Thursday, Oct 28, 10 @ 7:33 pm

  41. Quinn really is surprisingly good tonight.

Comment by Raising Kane Thursday, Oct 28, 10 @ 7:34 pm

  42. @ Chuck - You must be watching a different debate than me. Quinn is getting owned.

Comment by Joe Blow Thursday, Oct 28, 10 @ 7:35 pm

  43. “I really do need to moderate my own debate.” carol!

Comment by Amalia Thursday, Oct 28, 10 @ 7:35 pm

  44. no, Joe Blow, you must be in a fog. Raising Kane is correct.

Comment by Amalia Thursday, Oct 28, 10 @ 7:36 pm

  45. Quinn wants to abolish legislative scholarships, while Brady continues to hand them out, including to a contributor’s kid.

Comment by Reformer Thursday, Oct 28, 10 @ 7:36 pm

  46. Disagree with both Chuck and Joe Blow. No one is kicking tail. Quinn is winning, but it doesn’t seem as though it’s been a runaway.

Comment by Concerned Observer Thursday, Oct 28, 10 @ 7:36 pm

  47. Come on! Plug Rich!

Comment by Another Anonymous Thursday, Oct 28, 10 @ 7:37 pm

  48. Quinn missed an opportunity to say he reads CapitolFax, then pandered to every Chicago sports team’s fan base.

    Boo to that (lol)

Comment by Concerned Observer Thursday, Oct 28, 10 @ 7:38 pm

  49. Both candidates missed a plug for Capitol Fax when they were asked if they read any blogs.

Comment by Joe Blow Thursday, Oct 28, 10 @ 7:38 pm

  50. where did you cut back, vacations and other things we would have enjoyed….Brady

Quinn says ask my kids and talks about cutting his own pay.

Quinn says he reads political blogs and sports, Brady says newspapers, both go on the Internet. Quinn starting to talk Bulls, at the first game.

Quinn just said go to his site and look for Glee! HA!

Comment by Amalia Thursday, Oct 28, 10 @ 7:38 pm

  51. Quinn plugging his Glee ad again and said it was on Leno.

Comment by Amalia Thursday, Oct 28, 10 @ 7:39 pm

  52. I’ll honor the land of the law. jeez, Brady.

I believe in pro life. this is a federal issue. All’s I said is I wouldn’t criminalize women.

Comment by Amalia Thursday, Oct 28, 10 @ 7:41 pm

  53. Brady is incoherent about abortion. He wants to ban abortion but not criminalize it. If Brady wouldn’t punish the mother who gets an illegal abortion, then who would he punish?

Comment by Reformer Thursday, Oct 28, 10 @ 7:42 pm

  54. Oh my, Brady really struggled with the abortion question. Carol asked three times what the penalty should be for a woman who had an abortion, if abortion were illegal. Brady tried to dodge so hard, but failed miserably.

And then when asked if he would change the law, if he could, to make abortion illegal…Brady’s response was, “I don’t have that power.”

I mean, I don’t think it’ll kill his support or anything, but that was a good-sized gaffe.

Comment by Concerned Observer Thursday, Oct 28, 10 @ 7:42 pm

  55. ah, parental notification. “minor child’s health procedures.”

oh, so it’s a health procedure? really?

Comment by Amalia Thursday, Oct 28, 10 @ 7:42 pm

  56. “Standing boovation” great Quinnism re Madigan
people are laughing at Quinn’s jokes. that’s always good.

Comment by Amalia Thursday, Oct 28, 10 @ 7:43 pm

  57. Quinn continues to actually answer questions.

Brady immediately falls back on either prepared responses (income taxes, abortion, etc) or hits his standard talking points even if he strays from the questions.

Comment by Another Anonymous Thursday, Oct 28, 10 @ 7:44 pm

  58. If this Pat Quinn has shown up a month ago, he’d have a comfortable lead right now.

Comment by Chuck Thursday, Oct 28, 10 @ 7:45 pm

  59. Another Anonymous is right…Quinn is answering, Brady is as vague as possible.

Comment by Concerned Observer Thursday, Oct 28, 10 @ 7:46 pm

  60. ah, come on Quinn, tell us what you screwed up……

oh, but Brady can’t do it either. carol saves him with a aren’t you
sorry about the cat and dog bill.. yes, crowd laughs.

quinn uses this as an opportunity to mention the Glee ad again.

Comment by Amalia Thursday, Oct 28, 10 @ 7:46 pm

  61. ok, Brady has a good point that a leader leads and he would not have signed the video poker bill, but Quinn hits hard at him to say how do you fund things.

Comment by Amalia Thursday, Oct 28, 10 @ 7:48 pm

  62. Good Quinn line: “You can’t have it both ways.”

Brady evaded the AZ law question.

Comment by Reformer Thursday, Oct 28, 10 @ 7:49 pm

  63. As of 7:47, the Glee ad had 103,700 hits. Let’s see if the plugs tonight increase that.

Comment by Chuck Thursday, Oct 28, 10 @ 7:49 pm

  64. and Brady evades the Dream Act question.

oh, and now it’s on to Creationism!

Comment by Amalia Thursday, Oct 28, 10 @ 7:50 pm

  65. Example - on immigration, Quinn actually answered both questions with a no and yes. Brady gave talking points but couldn’t bring himself to say that he supports the AZ law or opposes the Dream Act.

Comment by Another Anonymous Thursday, Oct 28, 10 @ 7:51 pm

  66. When Brady is talking about teaching creationism, he’s losing.

Comment by Reformer Thursday, Oct 28, 10 @ 7:51 pm

  67. So how many staffers does Quinn have blogging on here tonight?

Comment by Eastside Thursday, Oct 28, 10 @ 7:52 pm

  68. oh my, “you would deny that to students?” yes, hell yes.
Illinois will turn into Teabagistan soon.

Comment by Amalia Thursday, Oct 28, 10 @ 7:52 pm

  69. not a Quinn staffer here, suburban wife watching with her husband!
I’ve talked to Pat Quinn two, maybe three times in public. just watching.

Comment by Amalia Thursday, Oct 28, 10 @ 7:53 pm

  70. Not as many as Brady, Eastside.

Comment by Chuck Thursday, Oct 28, 10 @ 7:54 pm

  71. Carol couldn’t resist bringing up the Chicago mayor’s race. I guess state issues are sufficiently important.

Comment by Reformer Thursday, Oct 28, 10 @ 7:54 pm

  72. Definitely not a Quinn staffer. I already voted for Brady - because Quinn is in the pocket of the unions.

Comment by Another Anonymous Thursday, Oct 28, 10 @ 7:54 pm

  73. oh, and now it’s vouchers if you care about urban areas. jeez….
    and, Marin out!

Comment by Amalia Thursday, Oct 28, 10 @ 7:54 pm

  74. Not I, Eastside. Don’t even know that I’ll vote for him. But I’ve seen enough debates, and I understand what hedging is, and Brady’s doing his best to hedge.

I actually think it’s pretty smart, because his goal tonight has to be not to screw up. Quinn’s the one who needs to make up some ground (especially since the good folks downstate can’t watch this).

So yes, Quinn won the debate (in my eyes). I just don’t think Brady choked anything away, so he’ll probably come out of it in good shape.

Comment by Concerned Observer Thursday, Oct 28, 10 @ 7:55 pm

  75. I’ll bet Brady is mad they didn’t get into vouchers. They ran out of time.

Comment by Chuck Thursday, Oct 28, 10 @ 7:55 pm

  76. And, back to the World Series. A pitchers’ duel. Unlike the slugging on channel 11 (ha).

Comment by Concerned Observer Thursday, Oct 28, 10 @ 7:56 pm

  77. Quinn was far more confident and relaxed than he was in his primary debate with Hynes. Bill was pretty good as well but I think Quinn won this one.

Comment by Raising Kane Thursday, Oct 28, 10 @ 7:56 pm

  78. Well, not a rout, but a Quinn win. For once, he didn’t ramble, he smiled like a normal person was aggressive and passionate without going over the top.

Brady wasn’t terrible (but the sweating was bad) but Quinn was able to deflect most of the punches and landed quite a few of his own.

I don’t work for Quinn, but I’ll sure vote for him.

Comment by Chuck Thursday, Oct 28, 10 @ 7:58 pm

  79. Both candidates got some good jabs in tonite but Brady won the debate and it will not be a game changer in the polls. Besides it was on WTTW and everyone is watching the World Series except for political hacks. I’d start packing my bags if I were any of the Quinn govt. bureaucrats posting here.

Comment by Joe Blow Thursday, Oct 28, 10 @ 8:00 pm

  80. joe blow- you are pretty confident, considering the race is within 4 points.
i am a whitmey fan–but u shouldnt count htose chicken before they hatch……

Comment by mia Thursday, Oct 28, 10 @ 8:06 pm

  81. if the husband thinks Quinn won the debate, Quinn won the debate. the husband hates all pols and is very critical of performance in debates. he really liked Quinn tonight.

Comment by Amalia Thursday, Oct 28, 10 @ 8:08 pm

  82. These guys make Alexi and Kirk look like real statesmen. We are in deep doo doo no matter who wins.

Comment by Bill Thursday, Oct 28, 10 @ 8:09 pm

  83. SO where was Rich Whitney? Ah, outside doing a protest because WTTW and the City Club, like the League of Women Voters said that was his place.

So, what did we get, two career pols arguing and muddying up the waters of Illinois. Neither one will be able to govern well enough to get us off the dime.

Bet anyone a hundred dollars, that Quinn or Brady will steal Whitney’s idea to tax high risk investment transactions on the Chgo (and other) Merc. It will bring in billions. Oh, did I say billions - just what Illinois needs.

    Doug Dobmeyer

Comment by Doug Dobmeyer Thursday, Oct 28, 10 @ 8:18 pm

  84. As a Quinn staffer, I am impressed that people thought we had time to waste time five days out of the election to comment on capfax. Until now at least.

Comment by JB Thursday, Oct 28, 10 @ 8:28 pm

  85. Matt Cain is lights out. Giants 1-0 after 5 1/2.

    It’s the World Series….

Comment by wordslinger Thursday, Oct 28, 10 @ 8:36 pm

  86. Quinn came across as more relaxed and comfortable in this one. Sometimes it helped (made the crowd laugh), other times it hurt a little bit (his constant interruptions grew tiresome).

All in all, Quinn’s best performance thus far, though not a game-changer. Had he been on the money from day 1, it may have been a different story.

Quinn scored a few points but Brady played defense well. Achieved the objective of avoifing any major gaffes, but also missed some opportunities to land a few stronger punches against Quinn.

Tie goes to the aggressor tonight - Quinn - but not enough to turn the tide.

    Comment by S Thursday, Oct 28, 10 @ 8:36 pm

  87. Quinn’s been an underdog gut-puncher forever. That’s the best part of his game.

  89. “I’d start packing my bags if I were any of the Quinn govt. bureaucrats posting here.” Unless you are one of the higher ups campaigning for both sides…

Comment by jimmy james Thursday, Oct 28, 10 @ 9:06 pm

  90. @Doug - not a great idea to hike taxes on transactions at the Merc. I work in this industry. Trading activity is very fungible and there are scores of exchanges like the Merc around the world. If transaction costs suddenly get raised at the Merc, traders will shift their trades to other exchanges, and the Merc and all the businesses that work with the Merc will suffer. Not good for Illinois.

Comment by Bluejay Thursday, Oct 28, 10 @ 9:08 pm

  91. thanks, guys, for the play by play. i had an election protection training to do, since mark kirk has decided that black people shouldn’t be allowed to vote…

Comment by bored now Thursday, Oct 28, 10 @ 9:08 pm

  92. Doug Dobmeyer: you want your guy in the debates, then ask him to get serious about running for office. i voted for whitney last time, and wasted my vote in the vain hope that he’d be serious about building a viable third party in illinois. now we know: he’s not serious about anything, except maybe fooling the electorate. stop wasting our time.

Comment by bored now Thursday, Oct 28, 10 @ 9:08 pm

  93. Brady may play down in the sticks, but he always seems out of place in Chicago. That orange Grecian Formula hair, the bad teeth, and that annoying smirk. Ick. No thanks. Can’t stand it for 4 yrs.

Comment by Larry the can opener Thursday, Oct 28, 10 @ 9:57 pm

  97. I think I kinda like the bald dude, he seems like he cares about me and my dog.

Comment by Larry the can opener Thursday, Oct 28, 10 @ 10:00 pm

  98. I don’t really have a dog in this fight since state government is really not the focus on the north shore aside from getting rid of as many local democrats as possible, so I am not as biased as last night.

Can some tie company in chicago offer the governor a new tie? he wears this thing every single day.

My guess is if you went back to the hynes debates 90 percent of the lines and remarks were the same. Both men seemed to find their own zingers/jokes extremely funny. Quinn seems to think himself a natural comedian. I feel for his son or flak who have probably heard the boovation joke about 1.3 million times. My guess is that gives him almost as much fun as putting on his purple tie.

there was also a point in the debate where they came dangerously close to plugging capitolfax blog.

also for notre dame fans this could be called the brady quinn debate. Maybe next time the candidates will have last names of ron and powlus or joe and montana or rick and mirer. Sorry had to get that in.

Comment by shore Thursday, Oct 28, 10 @ 10:01 pm

  99. I’m 15 minutes into watching this and there is no question Brady is doing much better than Quinn.

Comment by Suburbs Thursday, Oct 28, 10 @ 10:07 pm

  100. Bored Now: “Get serious” he’s as serious as anyone running for office - what he doesn’t have is money which the media likes for ads. if u haven’t voted, I hope you will consider Rich in 2010.

Bluejay: this is like a major league team that threatens to leave town un less they get a new stadium. I don’t think the trading will leave Chgo high and dry. It’s a better public policy to have the wealthier pay more of the fright than Illinois’ poorer people.

Comment by Doug Dobmeyer Thursday, Oct 28, 10 @ 10:10 pm

  101. As others has mentioned, unless there a major gaffe occurs, debates are not noticed anyone other than the “Inside Baseball” folks posting on this blog.

Comment by Regnad Kcin Thursday, Oct 28, 10 @ 10:15 pm

  102. doug- i’m a huge whitney fan–but blue jay has a point…. the same analogy of some jobs which left illinois for the southern state may apply here too…. if you tax something such as trading in an onerous sense–the volume WILL go down–too many other states would gladly capitalize on such
    a mistake.
a personal tax increase on large wage earners–would be preferable.
additionally, there are alot of people who work at the merc who are hard working people that could lose their jobs—and are just support staff over there, from what i have read. we can’t afford to hurt them.

Comment by mia Thursday, Oct 28, 10 @ 10:20 pm

  103. Brady is having morning meetings to see who dropped the ball, yet again. I say they fire Patty Shuh and then take it from there. Talk about ineptitude.

    Comment by Charlotte's Web Thursday, Oct 28, 10 @ 11:08 pm

  104. That’s harsh.

  105. It’s kinda late to fire anybody. Let alone poor Patty Shuh. A bit in over her head, but then she probably wasn’t in charge of paying the bills.

  106. I guess it’s late enough for me to say something semi-pro Brady in regard to this stupid ad glitch. How dare these TV stations make a campaign issue of this error. The man is spending millions at their companies and they publically embarrass him.

If I were Brady, I would get things straitened out and then publically announce that I was pulling my ads from the stations that publically embarrassed me.

  107. Doug,

I am 100 percent with Whitney on changing the state’s regressive income tax structure but as others have said these trading activities don’t have to stay in Chicago and they WILL LEAVE to avoid paying billions of dollars of tax (if there was a universe where they couldn’t defeat the bill before it even got placed into a committee via lobbying).

The only reason Chicago has these markets is as part of the trading legacy from the old days when Midwestern farmers had to ship their grain here to be sold and their animals here to be slaughtered. But things have changed a lot and they can really locate their marketplace anywhere and it won’t matter.

Look, I am one of the most anti-Wall Street, anti-financial industry, eat the rich sort of people you will find yet realistically so as much as it might feel good to do something like Whitney’s transaction tax it really isn’t in the end a very effective way to make the wealthier pay more at all.

  108. Just got done watching the debate repeat. My immediate reaction is these two made Alexi-Kirk look like Lincoln-Douglas. Wow.

What a couple of petty, incompetent liars the both of them. :(

Quinn was OTT know-it-all, superman/everyman political hack with his bragging about being at the first ever Bulls game in Chicago and being at the Blackhawks game 6 and throwing out that Glee on the Web site thing over and over and namedropping Abner Mikva at least twice and foolishness about the AFSCME endorsement. I did think he got some punches in there on legislative scholarships and bringing up Brady being in there for 17 years. I totally forgot that Quinn ran against Ryan as secretary of state.

On the other hand, Brady seemed condescending to Carol a few times with his responses and outright smarmy a lot of the time in the debate. The chuckle about the cat and dog euthanasia bill with Carol felt creepy on both their parts. I thought he was a lot weaker toward the end and IIRC despite all the attacks that got in there I don’t think he brought up the prisons thing at all?

p.s. When and why was Carol Marin in Livingston County? Asking the people of Pontiac who they want to see the next mayor of Chicago?

  109. I just finished watching the debate. By the end I was tired. Quinn came across as trying to be very slick, without any slickiness. Brady nailed him in the middle of lies on TV multiple times…and Brady ain’t my ideal PI. So, I guess I will leave it at this: Quinn has had a chance and failed. Miserably. Tonight did nothing to inspire me that he can change the direction of the state or Springfield. There is no other rational option on the ballot. My vote goes to Brady and I wish him the best. The state needs a spark. Fast.

  110. Wow-this was a NASTY debate. Hold your noses people… one of them is going to win.

  111. The guy from the WGN 9 Morning Zoo…aka the WGN Morning News was giving Brady tougher questions than Quinn.

  112. Doug Dobmeyer: i don’t vote for people who tilt at windmills and i don’t vote for people who won’t organize. i’m interested in candidates who can actually run a government, and if you can’t even organize a decent campaign — including raising the requisite amount of money — then you can’t run a government. i wasted my vote in 2006, and won’t ever do so again (already voted for quinn)…

  113. I watched most of the debate last night. I am generally of the view that change is needed in Springfield, but I thought that Quinn won last night’s debate.

The thing that puzzles me about Quinn, though, is that his answers and his tone and body language don’t seem to convey the proper sense of urgency, given the sorry condition of the state’s finances. Why is he not conveying a sense of anger about the budget gap and promising to crack heads to solve it? People are very upset and concerned about this, and I think his lack of alignment with the mood of the state’s voters on this issue is a key reason why he’s been trailing in the polls.
