Not a good thing to say

Posted in:

The Kankakee City News (a newspaper with a mostly African-American readership) ran a poll recently and contacted Jerry Weller’s office about the results, which showed overwhelming disapproval of Weller.

“When our reporter contacted Congressional Representative Jerry Weller’s office to discuss the poll, we were told the campaign did not believe the opinion of African-American voters would affect their candidate’s chances of victory in November.”

  1. Something doesn’t seem right here. Did they contact the office of Weller for Congress, or did they call his Congressional district office? Because if they called the later (which it sounds like they did, by the way the story is worded), no one there would have commented on the campaign at all.

It would have been nice, too, if they had actually run the quote and identified the source.

  2. Um, I’m a Dem and don’ want to help Weller, but this “newspaper” has so few objective criteria for stories that a “poll” is impossible. This guy extorts money from candidates of both parties and if they don’t pay then bad news appears. It seems to be an effective business plan.

  3. This is pretty sad. I agree with the above comments - there is no source/name from Weller’s office. It’s normal protocol for all staff in a congressional office to forward media requests/questions to a deputy administator or deputy director.

I’m also quite surprised to find their methodology in the poll. Did they poll only black registered voters? Or did they just stand at the gas station in Pembroke asking black folks when they walked whether they would vote for Weller?

Okay, I’ve said enough about this topic. Next, please.

  4. Jerry Weller will be around for at least another decade. The Democrats have never been able to get a middleweight contender, much less a heavyweight contender to run against Congressman Weller. The Democrats usually manage to beg some poor political featherweight who was the former dog catcher from Hooterville to run against Weller. The results are always what you would expect. The African-American voters in his district don’t bother to vote, much less vote against him.

Jerry Weller has organized labor leaders in his district in his pocket. They get out the union members vote for him and make large campaign contributions to him, much like they did for George Ryan. In turn, Jerry makes sure that these union leaders have jobs and work for their members. Congressman Weller and the union leaders are too busy scratching each others backs to pay attention to the few African-American’s that actually bother to vote in his district. He will be beating Strom Thurmond’s record for political longevity someday.
