Saturday afternoon politics

· Man, wouldn’t it be nice to have this kind of staff? The Tribune does a roundup of last-minute activities totaling just 752 words that nevertheless took six reporters to write. I wonder how many editors were involved. One minorly interesting point.

Yet, one veteran of the Chicago City Council is demonstrating his displeasure with Blagojevich, who has an overwhelming lead over former Ald. Edwin Eisendrath in public opinion polls.

Ald. William Beavers (7th) is passing out palm cards with his preferred list of candidates. But for governor he is listing both Blagojevich and Eisendrath.

“When you’re dissatisfied, you’re dissatisfied,” said Beavers, whose ward organization delivered a 13,709-vote margin for Blagojevich in 2002. “I think [Blagojevich is] going to be surprised about his numbers. I think he’s really going to be surprised.”

· Daily Herald’s Krol writes about the GOP candidates’ ties to George Ryan.

· Claypool sued.

· Illinois GOP finds itself in difficult spot.

· Teamsters Joint Council and Operating Engineers Local 150 both endorse Bob Churchill for Congress.

· Topinka says GOP needs a woman’s touch to reunite. And, as this story points out over and over, she smokes.

· “Forget abortion, gay marriage or the Iraq war. Arguably, the most bitter issue dividing residents in the 6th Congressional District primary race is the future of O’Hare International Airport.”

· State sets up election day hotline.

· Luis Gutierrez shows a little temper.

· Englewood rallies against guns.

Englewood residents are holding a neighborhood rally to call for an end to violence. Stray bullets have killed two young girls there in recent weeks. CBS 2’s Chelsea Irving reports.

Residents are starting to gather for the rally and the governor, the mayor, the police superintendent, and the schools’ CEO are all expected to join in the rally and march to end gun violence. The main goal is show support for a bill that would ban assault weapons — like the kinds that were used to kill two Englewood girls earlier this month – in all of Illinois. Those weapons are already illegal in Chicago.

Ten-year-old Siretha White and 14-year-old Starkesia Reed were both killed earlier this month in separate incidents when they were hit by stray bullets fired from automatic weapons.

  2. A note to the people that are using these tragic deaths to make a point. As reported in the news the criminal that fired the shots pulled the trigger and 29 bullets came out. When you pull the trigger and more than one bullet comes out it is called an automatic weapon. Automatic weapons are already banned in the entire country. The present legislation deals with semi-automatic weapons. This means when you pull the trigger one bullet comes out. A protester made the statement on TV that if there was an assult weapons ban these two young girls would be alive today. These deaths certainly were tragic, but simply put, were the result of criminals that used weapons that are already illegal in the United States.

  5. Thank you TO THE THE TRUTH if the entire story was known this people were probably career criminals and should have been in prison so it was the system not the guns.Who is in control of the system politicans like Daley who are more worried about gun control than criminals.Just like the Bradys are running around tryiny to take peoples guns instead of putting Hinckley to death or in prison for life.hey he’s already home on leave and the honest gun owner is still serving his sentence.Let’s see if this bunch gets federal time because it is a federal crime to have a fully automatic weapon.

  9. I wonder why the feds are locking up the meth heads in southern il and they let the gangs shoot up children in Chicago? The federal courts are putting the meth users and pushers away for long sentences in the south. Lets try the same thing in the north. Lock them up and throw away the key!!

  10. Meanwhile the Bloomington Pantagraph joins the list of media outlet who have taken a whack at Alexander’s campaign.
“Matt: At best this will be learning experience for Giannoulias. Lesson one: Don’t describe the convicted criminal Michael “Jaws” Giorango, whom your family-owned bank gave a loan to, as a “very nice person.”

Giorango was found guilty in connection with a bookmaking ring that threatened debtors with bombings and beatings.”

    Ouch!
