THIS JUST IN…Derrick Smith replaces Collins in House

Posted by Barton Lorimor

* 3:50 p.m. - Monique has the jump…

Derrick Smith gets the seat vacated by new Sen. Annazette Collins, who was appointed to replace Rickey Hendon earlier this month. Hendon abruptly resigned.

Smith is director of accounting revenue under Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White, who led the panel of ward committeeman who made the selection.

More to come when I can get it.

4:35 p.m. - Smith was one of four candidates for the 1st District seat on the Cook County Board. Here’s a questionnaire he did for one of the Sun Times papers.

  1. Who sent this guy? I just read his responses to the Tribune survey and they don’t sound well thought out at all.

  2. Hammer: Isn’t the part about him working for Jesse and being selected by a panel led by Jesse somewhat self-explanatory? I think he was a city guy for a while too.

  4. Anon 4:35 was me.

Here’s the link for his questionnaire from the 2010 primary, temp: http://primaries2010.elections.chicagotribune.com/editorial/derrick-smith/

  5. Jesse White is a clever politician and a longtime survivor in Illinois state politics so I would guess this whole exercise was to get his protege, Mr. Smith, into a district where he could survive an election. Collins was not an obvious choice, given her history of campaign finance problems, but maybe her district seemed to be a promising one for Mr. Smith.

  6. It’s funny that a commenter’s name is hammer, because if Madigan is the Velvet Hammer, Jesse White is the Invincible Hammer.

He was the only one with any power or guts to go the full nine yards on the Blago and Burris Senate appointment fiasco, when Durbin and Reid folded their tents at the first whiff of trouble.

Even after White refused to sign the Senate papers, Burris was on the radio the next day with Jesse praising him to high heaven. It was surreal.

Everyone knows who the Big Heat is in Illinois, much less Chicago, much less black Chicago, much less the West Side of Chicago.

Jesse White may be the most popular statewide elected official in Illinois, ever.

Who tops him? Edgar won every county, once. I don’t think anyone else is close.

  7. Sorry I stepped away. Thanks Obamara. Jesse does seem to be teflon, it’s kinda nuts. It’s all positive out, never any negative in. Even with the endorsement of Rahm and this Smith fellow, he seems to be able to do no wrong

  8. And thanks Barton for finding the survey I meant. Working + Capfax = both suffering

  9. I guess when Collins said “it would be nice” but not necessary for her daughter to succeed her, she knew the score. Wonder how much of the conversation that day was about this selection?

  10. Once again showing that Jesse White’s popularity is all about the tumblers and none about his accomplishments or lack thereof as SOS. Teflon indeed.

  11. Was this guy a tumbler? His answers are pretty vague. I did, however, like the answer he happened to give about collecting money owed by those who received cook county services.

  12. Anyone who thinks Jesse White’s popularity is all about the tumblers never had their drivers license renewed at the express office downtown. I didn’t just deal with it, I ENJOYED the experience. And it took under an hour even though the line was out the door when I got there.

  13. Cheryl, I don’t think people think his popularity is all about the tumblers. He has been pretty quiet and a nice guy. The tumblers are great PR and actually do help people. Have there been many scandals under his tenure? Plus, wasn;t he the SOS following GHR?

  14. I happened to know this guy from many years back and think very highly of him. If I recall, he was just a “city” worker hoping to get ahead. That is until he decided he needed a college education. I remember when he started Malcolm X and was working long hrs w/ the city, had family obligations and working in the ward. He had excellent grades while juggling many responsibilities. He was a great ward worker, and precinct captain, and highly respected among his friends. He’s an honest, hard working and can be trusted to do a thorough job. I wish him all the luck in the world. Congratulations and welcome, Illinois Representative Derrick Smith!
