Boland tosses hat in ring

Posted in:

Worst kept secret this month.

State Rep. Mike Boland announced Wednesday that he wants to replace Lane Evans in Congress. Now he just needs the support of hundreds of precinct committeemen from the sprawling congressional district.

Evans said last month that he will not seek a 13th term because his Parkinson’s disease is worsening. The Rock Island Democrat announced the decision after the primary election, so the district’s committeemen will choose a candidate to run in his place this fall.

Evans has endorsed aide Phil Hare to replace him, but Boland said he still has a good shot at becoming the candidate.

“I think it’s wide open,” the East Moline Democrat said at a Springfield news conference.

Boland called himself a progressive on social issues but a fiscal conservative who has never supported a tax increase.

So, in other words, he’ll vote for the programs but won’t vote to pay for them.

  1. Who decides who the candidate will be on the state rep ballot that Boland is abandoning then?

  2. Sounds like a moderate Republican…”I’m socially moderate but fiscally conservative.” Great, but who cleans up the mess?

  3. The problem with Boland is that he is known to endorse republicans in his own district.

  4. Great to see Boland formally announce!

Mike has the experience and leadership qualities to make a great congressman for the 17th

No other candidates floating around out there have the proven ablitiy to win support in republican areas like Mike has.

Boland has a great Labor Record, is a champion of health care for everyone and is socially progressive.

I look forward to him winning the nomination and more importantly in the fall

  6. Hare should launch a negative blitzkrieg against Boland if he’s serious about winning the nomination. Maybe rbyrd could help him with the winning ways they supplied to mangieri

  7. A caucus on county chairs of the 71st District would find a successor to Boland, but that kind of hyperventilating is a huge waste of time. Mike Boland is going absolutely nowhere in this process. Why? The voters aren’t the type who have read about his press conferences over the years. The voters are hard cord party activists, the majority of whom will be supporting others. There is absolutely no reason to talk about Boland’s Illinois House successor because he’ll be running for state rep again.

  8. Boland doesn’t have to abandon his state rep seat unless he wins the congressional primary … which is about a 10% chance at this point.

  9. Wait a minute, social moderate doesn’t automatically mean programs, Mr. Moderator, it usually means social policy issues like abortion, gay rights, affirmative action, etc. There are folks at the national level like Chris Shays who call themselves social moderates, but you’d never tar them the way you just tarred this guy. I don’t know him from adam, but you were lazy here — either you have facts that weren’t included here (such as the rest of his statement), or you are revealing more of a bias than I’ve come to expect.

  11. IF YOU ASK ANYBODY IN THE 17TH DISTRICT THEY WILL SAY “MANGIERI, MANGIERI, MANGIERI, MANGIERI, MANGIERI, MANGIERI” BECAUSE HE IS A REAL MAN AND PEOPLE ON THE MISSISSIPPI RIVER WANT A REAL MAN TO REPRESENT THEM IN CONGRESS, ESPECIALLY IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES!!!

  12. Go Mike! A great populist! His heart is in the right place. Phil is wonderful too though. Too bad we have to choose just one…this is a hard one. How nice to have such good choices to “replace” the classy, irreplaceable Lane Evans.

Boland only endorsed a Republican when the alternative wsa a Jacobs.
You can’t leave out that detail.

  14. Didn’t Boland bury the hatchet with the Jacobs’ at Madigan’s suggestion?

Comment by Anonymous Thursday, Apr 13, 06 @ 8:32 am

  15. If you don’t like a candidate in your own party you may not endorse them but you shouldn’t endorse the republican opposition. Doesn’t sit will with the local dems.
