* NBC 5 recently ran a nice little story about Congressman Jesse Jackson, Jr. and his Washington, DC office dog

The political barking that echoes through Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr.’s Washington, D.C. office even had a dog bark to match it.

In an effort to promote animal welfare awareness, Jackson Jr. took in Mocha, a 1-year-old foster pup, from the Washington Humane Society, as a “temporary staff member,” according to a press release.

“She’s brought nothing but love and affection to the office since her arrival,” Jackson said. “I can’t imagine Mocha spending her days in a shelter, mostly alone, hoping for a new home.”

* The accompanying photo…

* But look closer, over the Congressman’s right shoulder…

Hmm.

No harm, of course. I’ve had my share of adult beverages in legislative offices. More than my share, probably. I used to keep a bottle in my Statehouse office, but my office mate [***cough!JohnPatterson!cough!***] kept drinking it without me, so I stopped.

But this should serve as a reminder to the Congressman’s staff - and to everyone else out there - that you might want to move the hooch out of the shot the next time a photographer stops by.

  2. They’ve got hooch and a pooch in the same shot. Just trying to appeal to the broadest audience possible.

  4. To be fair Rich, I hear Scotch pairs well with grilled puppy. Especially when the Scotch is at least 18 years old and the puppy no more than 18 weeks old. Macallen’s also makes a nice marinade that tenderizes the puppy and adds a nice glaze.

  7. John, you may be confused. The garbage is where you put all those empty bottles. And, what is this, are you the new Steve Brown?

  8. Believe it or not, a half-opened bottle of cheap whiskey will in fact evaporate if you don’t come to your pressroom office for nearly two years. FYI, I think your decade-old emergecy cigarette is part of “artifacts of the West Wing renovation” display in the Stratton.

  9. “Evaporate.” Yeah. Stick with that. “Sorry, Rich, it just evaporated. (hiccup)”

  10. At least now we know why JJJ is smiling.

  11. I’ve got the Hooch. I’ve got the pooch. How about a smooch?

  12. I’m confused, Rich. If there’s “No harm”, and it’s a common practice to imbibe occasionally in legislative offices, why should his staff move the bottle out of view when photographers are coming by? Because bloggers might see it and make a news story out of it while claiming that it’s no big deal and probably shouldn’t be a news story?

  13. LB, beer on St. Patty’s Day and other such things aside, it’s common practice for politicos to try to avoid being photographed with booze.

Comment by Rich Miller Monday, Jun 11, 12 @ 4:10 pm

  14. A six-pack of Budweiser would seem to be in order for a Jackson photo.

Comment by Wensicia Monday, Jun 11, 12 @ 4:23 pm

  15. What I’d like to know is: why is his tan “striped”? It stops at his eyebrows and resumes below his nose.

Comment by Jobo Monday, Jun 11, 12 @ 4:34 pm

  16. NBC 5 reports that the House Ethics Committee is looking into allegations that Jackson directed an Oak Brook fundraiser to purchase Mocha squeaky chew toys, LiverSnax and Kibble N’ Bits in values exceeding House gift rules….

Jackson’s Chicago dog is said to have been recently made aware of his Washington dog.

Nah, NBC 5 just went with the shaggy dog story. Do you know difficult it is to fill a 17-minute news hole in a 30-minute cast?

  20. I like how the booze is on the floor, like it is supposed to be hidden behind a chair or something.

Comment by Just Me Monday, Jun 11, 12 @ 5:37 pm

  21. Some hooch with the pooch. Maybe the good congressman can take some time from his busy schedule to perform the work for which he was hired.

Comment by conservatively liberal Monday, Jun 11, 12 @ 6:04 pm

  22. This is a good photo of happy times for Jesse Jackson Jr. After all, why not smile? Intrepid crime fighter Pat Fitzgerald isn’t bothered by the demand side of the Obama Senate seat sale. You might say the best evidence was from the demand side not the supply side (Blago). We have to stop a corruption crime spree because we kept hearing on wire taps Jesse Jackson Jr’s name, Obama, and Valerie Jarret. Yeah, we let a RICO enterprise go on for years but we stopped it just as Jesse Jackson Jr. was going to show the money. No word yet on whether Jesse Jackson Jr. has a picture of Patrick Fitzgerald on his wall.

  23. This is the first and only time I will compliment him. The man apparently has good taste in beverages.

  25. I love these pictures! They bring out JJJ’s caring humanitarian side.

Definitely someone I could vote for!

  26. The way that Congress fights all the time, it might not be a bad idea if all of them had a shot once in a while - might calm them all down a bit.
