*** UPDATED x1 *** Derrick Smith still has some friends

Posted in:

* This A-1 was filed last night by indicted former state Rep. Derrick Smith (D-Chicago)

It isn’t a huge amount of money, but it really takes a lot of stones to give that guy any campaign cash.

Sheesh.

* Meanwhile, Greg Hinz reports that Secretary of State Jesse White has convinced House Speaker Michael Madigan to make calls on behalf of Smith’s opponent, Lance Tyson

At issue is an endorsement rally scheduled for [yesterday] afternoon by Lance Tyson, who decided to run as a third-party candidate after Mr. Smith won renomination in March, despite facing federal corruption charges. Mr. Smith subsequently was expelled from the House, and local Democratic powers, headed by Secretary of State Jesse White, got behind Mr. Tyson. […]

Steve Brown, Mr. Madigan’s longtime spokesman, told me that the speaker, at the request of Mr. White, has called various parties “and asked them to be for Tyson and attend the event.” Mr. Brown wouldn’t say if the speaker will open his war chest in the contest, but suggested it would be clear where the speaker stands, given the preceding comments.

So exactly who will show up? I’ve confirmed that a long list of officials, including U.S. Rep. Danny Davis, Cook County Commissioners John Fritchey and John Daley, and Aldermen Joe Moreno (1st), Emma Mitts (37th) and Michelle Smith (43rd) support Mr. Tyson. And I hear that a couple of deep-pocketed unions are preparing to jump into the contest.

*** UPDATE *** Congressman Danny Davis just called to say that he wasn’t at that Tyson event, didn’t know about the event and is neutral in the race.

[ *** End Of Update *** ]

* It turns out that Smith’s reported benefactor Alliance for Living NFP is also a big contributor to the Speaker’s campaign funds

* As is Lydia Healthcare

* As is Albany Care

  1. ===It turns out that Smith’s reported benefactor Alliance for Living NFP is also a big contributor to the Speaker’s campaign funds====
    It looks like Alliance For Living is pretty well lobbied up with four different groups. I wonder who made the recommendation to give the contributions?

  2. Not positive, but Albany Care and Lydia care may both be part of the Alliance for Living.

  3. Those groups ARE all aligned with one home care provider..

  4. Albany House is in my neighborhood. It is a psych hospital, not an old folks nursing home. I suppose this is naive but Im a little shocked at how much money they are spending on campaign contributions when they could be using that money to care for those folks that are residents!

  5. I can’t believe Speaker Madigan would actually help Smith but organizations do not send money to candidates unless they clear it through the Speaker. At the very least the Speaker has been careless in this race by not ensuring a Tyson victory. If Illinois gets Derrick Smith I think the blame should be placed directly on Speaker Madigan.

  6. Anyone else think these donations were set on autopilot as it were…

  7. Oneman,

    I certainly can put my tinfoil hat on and come up with some other explanations for why Smith received these donations from a Madigan ally but the reality is the “autopilot” explanation is probably the most accurate. This just leads back to the question, what is Speaker Madigan doing to stop Smith from getting elected? Complete black eye on Illinois.

  8. –Anyone else think these donations were set on autopilot as it were… –

    OneMan, I was thinking the same thing. The boss says, “just give to who we gave to last time.”

    Hard to imagine why anyone would go out of their way to put a target on their back by contributing to Smith this time around.

  9. Would someone please tell me if the revenue reported on a non-profit’s Form 990 is the same as the revenue that is generated from the actual health care services provided? I was looking at the 2009 Form 990 for the Alliance for Living N.F.P. and line 9 (total revenue) says $268,474. I assume that this is not the revenue for the business side of this venture as the lobbying expenses total $262,609. Is there a better way to determine what a company pays in lobbying compared to what the company actually earns (or in the case of a non-profit spend on actual duties)? Yes, this is a total newb question, but I would still appreciate any additional clarity on this subject.

  10. Curious, what policies do these 3 groups advocate for?

  11. Nursing homes including facilities for the mentally ill. There is big state money in nursing homes.

  21. I would go along with the idea that the contributers were on cruise control. What is more interesting is the folks who are danceing on top of the fence. It sure seems some of the powers that be are looking at the bottom of the tea cup and see dark visions. Things like maybe the folks in his area could give a rat’s patotie what Smith may have done. Like maybe he could win. Also maybe the Fed’s don’t have a lead pipe case and they may need to smile and work with Smith. The ole roll them bones but put your money on the come line.
