House chamber renovation pics

Posted in:

This was sent in by a friend…

When workers started removing walls on Friday we found this blackboard which appears to be how they posted committees sometime before the early ’70s renovation. Folks who were here before and after that period do not remember the board. Obviously the board is badly damaged, but it is bit of history.

And here are a couple more pics of the House renovations…

Consider this an Illinois politics open thread. I’ve got several things to do today before I officially start vacation. Have fun.

  1. Is the sub floor they are putting down made of plywood or solid gold? Just wondering….

  2. Happy Vacation! Isn’t it ironic how it doesn’t seem to matter which party is in control, that if either party has a solid majority they run wild on spending for low priority things, cutting important services, give lip service to important things, run up deficits and giving away to special interests. In the state its the democrats and at the fed level its the republicans. You have to wonder how the party loyalists sleep at night.

  3. Maybe it would be better to use the space for something else. Three men make all the decisions for the state. Why have the other members? Save $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$.

  4. I first started coming to Springfield on legislative matters in 1969. I’m not sure whether I remember the boards or not. Dick Lockhart would probably remember.

  5. I had no idea that the state capitol was being renovated. I just wonder if it’s worth it.

  6. What if they took out all the desks and chairs . . . then stopped for good.

  7. Because of the reference to the “Constitutional Conv.” committee, it should be easy to date this chalkboard. And we should consider re-establishing such a committee!

  8. The best renovation they ever made was when they removed 1/3 of the seats after the cutback amendment. Pat Quinn did for Illinois a great thing by removing the stooges who were undemocratically elected from districts. That big house system was one of the dumbest things I’ve ever heard of. Thank God we’re rid of that idiocy.

  9. How much did the contractor give to the Gov’s re-election fund?

I am surprised the Governor hasn’t announced that in an effort to balance the budget and end bipartisanship, they would not be replacing the seats for the republicans.

Another opportunity for reform passes by.

  10. i started watching the legislature in 1957—i remember the boards—they were around for sometime after that—though i am not sure where—i kinda think they were just outside the chamber doors to the rotunda—-in those days the third floor had a hot dog stand and the reference bureau—also on third—had screen doors.

  11. Please, that could have happened regardless of the Cutback Amendment. At least we don’t have stooges getting elected with only 20% of the vote any more, whose only purpose was to drive a little more pork their way.

Things have gotten bad, but they would have been worse without the Cutback Amendment

  12. Maybe the State should sell that chalkboard and any other “treasures” the workers find. Wouldn’t those items make great props for a local pub????

  13. We were so proud of Pat then and really proud of him today. :)
Noticed that someone woke up Andy McKenna and he mouthed those ‘give back the money’ lines that have made him so effective and the most powerful GOP(as in MOPE) chair since …. Harold Byron Smith…Wonder if he plans the same line for all the guys who donated after getting ‘Get out of Jail’ free cards from Brickhead the Executioner?
Just wanted to get that question in before Rich heads off to some sun drenched island with his honey and all the loot he scored during the session. By the time he backs A.G.& the Brick will be even more invisible — if that is possible.
