* Appointed state Rep. John Cabello speaking to a tea party group earlier this month…
“I’m dead-set opposed to civil unions. Marriage is between a man and a woman. Now, unfortunately, in my opinion, they have opened up the door for other things. Now, and please bear with me, does this now say that somebody can get married to their dog?”
* When pressed by a reporter, Cabello backed off…
“Was I saying that those two are related, absolutely not. I’m not saying that this next step will happen.”
“I’m not saying, I’m just saying.”
Cabello represents a pretty solidly Republican district. It’s doubtful that he will lose the election.

Rep. Cabello must really like dogs. If he’s in your neighborhood, you might want to bring yours in the house.
So you draw a clear relationship, but you’re not saying they’re related? That’s clear.
If you can’t distinguish between domesticated animals and consenting adults, I imagine a lot of concepts are confusing.

Does anyone think it’s unclear that one side has won this debate and Cabello’s side has lost?
There was a national conservative commentator who noted that the initial predictions made by conservatives about the bad consequences of gay marriage haven’t come true.
Cabello should have the political acumen to deflect the question.
But instead he insists on saying something bigoted.
What has history taught us about anti-gay activists? A whole bunch of them have issues around their own sexuality.
If Cabello can’t make the case for election by focusing on the state budget, taxes, pensions, jobs and other economic issues, he probably should not be re-elected.

Don’t worry, I’ve been assured by commenters on this very blog that the Tea Party doesn’t take strong or extreme stands on social issues.
Now I’ll sit back and wait for the Tea Party advocates here to denounce Rep. Cabello’s crazy comments, which I’m sure they’ll do. Any minute now.

Remember when Republicans were branding the Tea Party as a new movement concerned about government spending and the excesses of police/military-state?
Turns out the Tea Party was, at its core, the same kooks that were always the Republican base.

So, let me see…if I got married by a judge and not a Preacher, Priest, Rabi, or other religious representative, am I on his list of nare-do-wells?
This fellow sounds like a goof to me. When folks aren’t paying attention, they elect these sorts, and that applies to all parties.

Hey, people: he got a thumbs up from the Trib today in its endorsements. And, since the Trib NEVER makes mistakes or offers any reason to question the perceptiveness of its editorial judgments, you need to chill out on your concerns about civil rights.

I don’t think that civil unions will automatically lead to inter-species relational recognition, at least it wasn’t in the legislation that passed. I’d leave it to Rep. Cabello to carry that legislation.

Lighten up, people! He was making a common forensic argument: reductio ad absurdem. We all need to raise the “outrage threshold” and stop over-reacting to opinions we disagree with! And, come to think of it, my dog IS kinda cute!!
