Unclear on the concept

Posted in:

* Appointed state Rep. John Cabello speaking to a tea party group earlier this month

“I’m dead-set opposed to civil unions. Marriage is between a man and a woman. Now, unfortunately, in my opinion, they have opened up the door for other things. Now, and please bear with me, does this now say that somebody can get married to their dog?”

* When pressed by a reporter, Cabello backed off

“Was I saying that those two are related, absolutely not. I’m not saying that this next step will happen.”

“I’m not saying, I’m just saying.”

Cabello represents a pretty solidly Republican district. It’s doubtful that he will lose the election.

  1. Rep. Cabello must really like dogs. If he’s in your neighborhood, you might want to bring yours in the house.

So you draw a clear relationship, but you’re not saying they’re related? That’s clear.

If you can’t distinguish between domesticated animals and consenting adults, I imagine a lot of concepts are confusing.

  2. Does anyone think it’s unclear that one side has won this debate and Cabello’s side has lost?

There was a national conservative commentator who noted that the initial predictions made by conservatives about the bad consequences of gay marriage haven’t come true.

Cabello should have the political acumen to deflect the question.

But instead he insists on saying something bigoted.

What has history taught us about anti-gay activists? A whole bunch of them have issues around their own sexuality.

If Cabello can’t make the case for election by focusing on the state budget, taxes, pensions, jobs and other economic issues, he probably should not be re-elected.

  4. Methinks Rep. Cabello doth protest too much.

  5. Don’t worry, I’ve been assured by commenters on this very blog that the Tea Party doesn’t take strong or extreme stands on social issues.

Now I’ll sit back and wait for the Tea Party advocates here to denounce Rep. Cabello’s crazy comments, which I’m sure they’ll do. Any minute now.

  9. I could fill a page rebutting his stupid remarks
what amazes me it someone like him could get
elected. Dog catcher yes but State Rep.no way.

The Tea Party has elected some beauties.

  10. Anyone bringing up animals or polygamy on the gay marriage question loses any credibility in my opinion.

  12. Remember when Republicans were branding the Tea Party as a new movement concerned about government spending and the excesses of police/military-state?

Turns out the Tea Party was, at its core, the same kooks that were always the Republican base.

  13. Cabello was appointed, not elected (for those questioning how he was elected).

  14. So, let me see…if I got married by a judge and not a Preacher, Priest, Rabi, or other religious representative, am I on his list of nare-do-wells?

This fellow sounds like a goof to me. When folks aren’t paying attention, they elect these sorts, and that applies to all parties.

  16. How uninformed can you get? Another nut job without a clue. I’ll bet that this clueless tea bagger didn’t know that many civil unions, possibly the majority, are between heterosexuals, usually Catholics, whom do so for religious reasons. I know it’s my ongoing rant about another nomineeasaurus Rex…

  19. Hey, people: he got a thumbs up from the Trib today in its endorsements. And, since the Trib NEVER makes mistakes or offers any reason to question the perceptiveness of its editorial judgments, you need to chill out on your concerns about civil rights.

  20. ==”Crazy comments on the right and crazy commments by the left. There are always outliers.”==

What are the crazy comments on the left? Comments that reject mainstream ideology that we can shoot, pollute, and swindle our way to prosperity?

Comment by Crime Fighter Friday, Oct 19, 12 @ 12:22 pm

  21. I don’t think that civil unions will automatically lead to inter-species relational recognition, at least it wasn’t in the legislation that passed. I’d leave it to Rep. Cabello to carry that legislation.

  22. Send his opponent Carl Wasco a check - while your at it call Madigan and demand that he start supporting Wasco! The guy is like 7-8 points behind without the Speaker helping at all. . . . Dems could win this race.

  23. Lighten up, people! He was making a common forensic argument: reductio ad absurdem. We all need to raise the “outrage threshold” and stop over-reacting to opinions we disagree with! And, come to think of it, my dog IS kinda cute!!

  24. Suggested reply: “I read a study that had proven that more and more people want to, and are, marrying their best friend. I was in a hurry and obviously misunderstood the context.”
