* Seventeen Democrats and five Republicans filed to run for former Congressman Jesse Jackson, Jr.’s seat yesterday. Sun-Times…
Longtime political analyst Don Rose said not only will money be important in the race to replace Jackson but how a candidate spends it will be critical.
“There’s no question that fund-raising is important,” he said. “Nobody has a district-wide reputation so they simply [have] to get their message out. Money is a substantial part of the ballgame.”
Rose qualified that, however, pointing out that U.S. Rep. Mike Quigley was far outspent when he ran in a special election in 2009, and he won with about 22 percent of the vote.
Rose said Halvorson is the only candidate to have a district-wide name, having run in the primary and agreed she probably didn’t need to fund raise as much as other candidates.

On the Republican side, Beverly Reid of Chicago joined the previously announced Lenny McAllister of Maywood. Paul McKinley of Bronzeville, Freedom’s Journal Magazine publisher Eric Wallace of Flossmoor and James Taylor Sr. of downstate Bradley also entered the contest Monday.

I know you don’t have to live in the district to run, but Maywood’s hardly in the neighborhood of the 2nd.
Might have a West Side/South Side thing going on there, too.

Interesting to see Maywood as being downstate. Don’t think any of this District is downstate. The farthest south is Kankakee County and I don’t think anyone around here thinks of this as being downstate. Heck even Clifton is not downstate. Just south of I 80 and don’t think Maywood is even that south.

You have obviously never been to Clifton. It’s seriously downstate, dude. I went to grade school there. Go back a lot. Was back at Christmas. My best friend from grade school was joking about building an electric fence around Cook County.

The better question is who in the 2nd District didn’t file to run, LOL.
IMO, when you cross the Cook County line on I-57 between Richton Park and University Park, and you are surrounded by more corn and soybeans than people around Monee and Peotone, you ARE downstate.

I think Clifton is rural but not downstate other than the theory that everything south of Chicago is downstate.

Kelly’s web ad is outrageous. The Second Congressional District has a long history of watching jobs leaving, economic stagnation, broken families, welfare mothers, bad education, churches preaching division, conspiracies and victimizations, and political leaders seeing it as a stepping stone to more political power or a place to enrich themselves.
The biggest problem within the Second District is not the need for self defense. It is the absolute lack of hope for a brighter future. No Congressperson can promise to deliver what this District needs. No politician could find enough money to turn it around. Politics and governments didn’t cause this region to grow 100 years ago, nor cause it to start dying 50 years ago.
After three generations of hand outs, public housing, and every conceivable government program available to this District, it is simply not better off.
Robin Kelly doesn’t know what to do about the real burden of living in the Second Congressional District, so she is hoping to find another way to political power by appealing to our emotions over gun violence by proposing plans that will never find sufficient support to pass, and that will never find a way to really fix the problems causing these deaths.
“If one life can be saved…” Wow - how LOW can you set that bar, Robin?

Maywood is a majority Black suburb west of Oak Park east of Elmhurst. It is in the western part of the IL-07 (Danny Davis) district. Maywood is adjacent to the Melrose Park portion of the IL-04 (Gutierrez) district.
It’s a long drive from Maywood to the northern most precincts of IL-02, which are a small chunk of the southeast corner of Hyde Park.

can we assume from all the attacks on robin kelly (here) that she’s the (black) candidate to beat???
the comparisons to the 5th CD are interesting. yes, quigley didn’t raise the most money, but he did raise enough for an aggressive mail campaign and they put the necessary volunteer boots on the ground. quigley had a *great* campaign team around him, and got his message out. he stayed focused on his campaign, and — more importantly — on his message. his team effectively utilized all the resources available to him. i’d think that whatever campaign does that this time will win, as well…

Actually, Forest Park separates Oak Park and Maywood.
If you wish to traverse from Oak Park to Maywood, let me recommend Roosevelt Road or Chicago Avenue, and avoid Madison Street.
Once I get to Madison Street in Forest Park, I tend to stop and stay for a while.

You don’t have to live in the Congressional District in order to represent it. Just ask Gutierrez. He’s to good to live in the 4th CD, but has represented it for nearly 20 years.

But you should have to grow up in the Second District to understand just how far and deep the unmitigated disaster of it all is.
Government can’t fix this place. Waiting for a government or a politician to fix this place has been a waste of time. After sixty years, please, how about getting a clue?
The next Congressperson from here, needs to have been from here. That way we won’t get another silver-spoon-fed elitist raised in Washington DC, a faux-curriculum vitae fake chasing teen tail, or an old rabble rouser who outlived his usefulness as Congressmen from this district.
There was never any plans for this District when the Industrial Age ended. The folks who did the planning, just planned to be living in a vacation home somewhere else by the end of their terms.

Hmm, this is really gonna be interesting. I have absolutely no idea whatsoever who is gonna win this thing. Halvorson has to be considered the de facto frontrunner based on name recognition, let’s see if anyone can catch her without being tripped up by someone else.

The list is a lot longer but the point is fair. If the primary was held tomorrow Halvorson easily gets the majority in the actual District on name recognition. She also wins the gutsy award, since none of the other suddenly passionate candidates had the stones to run agains J3. Since she’s the frontrunner, then, and (I believe) the only white candidate, let’s see how long it takes before one of the A-A candidates starts to insinuate that IL-02 is somehow “a black seat” - given the new map that’s really a stretch.
This race needs to be about a lot more important issues than race.
