  16. Oscar, if you decide to start a blog on Illinois politics, you will need to promise us that your human will step down from his influential post.

Note to legislative printing office: Mr. Miller is only allowed to take one paper schedule for each chamber per day. Those extras he wants to take “for a friend” will not be used for their originally intended purpose. (Although what Mr. Miller’s friend will use them for may be more appropriate.)

===That’s what we’re doing. But, man, he no likey the crate. ===

The crate has to be a happy place for the dog, not a place for punishment.

  62. ===The crate has to be a happy place for the dog, not a place for punishment. ===

  66. That there is one damn cute dog.

Did the crate training, but it morphed into the behind-my-knees training. Now I can’t sleep without my dog tucked behind my knees. When I hear the dog’s sigh after finally finding the most comfortable position, I know all is right with the world and we both sleep like babies. Enjoy!

  69. After a while, the dog will think of the crate as a refuge, and you’ll know you’ve become insufferable when your dog would rather go to his crate rather than be with you!

  70. A cute puppy. Why didn’t I think of that!

    Comment by Manti Te' O Thursday, Jan 24, 13 @ 3:09 pm

  71. ===After a while, the dog will think of the crate as a refuge===

That’s what I’m told. He’s really quiet now. Chilling in his crate, which is on my desk near me. Man, he’s so cute. But, man, it was tough getting him in his crate after his early afternoon walk and play time.

Comment by Rich Miller Thursday, Jan 24, 13 @ 3:20 pm

  72. Oscar- watch out for cigarette buds and beer caps. PS- you’ll have a blast chasing geese in his back yard.

Comment by Just The Way It Is One Thursday, Jan 24, 13 @ 3:34 pm

  75. What a cutie! We only adopt adults (Greyhounds) but I miss having an occasional puppy.

You know why puppies are so adorable, right? To keep them out of the stewpot when they’re naughty?

    Have fun!

  76. You probably know this, but I have found that a wind up alarm clock near their bed at night does calm them down when they are in a new setting. It really does work.

Comment by Just the Facts Thursday, Jan 24, 13 @ 4:32 pm

  84. Cute pup … and the crate will grow on him.

Only see one problem Rich. Now, instead of “Oh look, a kitty” … it will be “Oscar just went that-a-way!”

Comment by RNUG Thursday, Jan 24, 13 @ 5:45 pm

  85. Is there a bed for him to lay on in the crate? If you’re home, they generally like to be outside the crate and exploring but it is so chaotic watching them. When we’ve had pups that didn’t want to go in, we just offered a cookie bribe that we held inside the crate and they usually scoot right in.
Congrats!!! He looks like a super star! Best wishes to Oscar from my dogs.

  87. *gets up afer lying on the floor, quietly scheming for hours to take a closer look at the scruffy-faced being that just walked into the thread. Eyes widen as she wonders, “Could Oscar possibly have grown that big in just a couple of days?” Thinks about what she read on Wikipedia about puppies for a few seconds, remembering that almost all puppies walk on four legs and then leaps for joy as she realizes it is not Oscar, but…Rich Miller! Skips with joy toward the big guy and then tugs on his jacket to get his attention and asks:*

Mr. Rich, how did YOU convince your family to let you bring an Oscar home?

Comment by Anonymous Thursday, Jan 24, 13 @ 7:32 pm

  88. Rich, you’re in trouble-as of 7:33, Oscar has more comments than Lisa…

Comment by downstate commissioner Thursday, Jan 24, 13 @ 7:34 pm

  89. Phew. It worked! (Not that I wanted to get Rich in any kind of trouble, or that I really didn’t want Lisa to win to the photo caption contest today…but Oscar is terribly, terribly cute. And, it is, after all, his debut.)

Comment by Anonymous Thursday, Jan 24, 13 @ 7:51 pm
