Fundraiser doesn’t imply endorsement?

Posted in:

* I’m not sayin’, I’m just sayin’

Will County Executive Larry Walsh is hosting his first fundraiser for Gov. Pat Quinn at the IBEW union hall on Monday. But the event doesn’t mean Walsh is endorsing his fellow Democrat’s re-election before all gubernatorial candidates are announced, including potential candidate Bill Daley.

“It means that I feel that Pat Quinn’s administration has been very, very supportive of what is going on here in Will County,” Walsh said. “I’m hosting a fundraiser to say thank you to the governor.”

* More money

Gov. Pat Quinn will be toasted by his supporters from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at O’Brien’s Restaurant & Bar in Old Town.

You gotta wonder if they’re endorsing him or holding off as well.

  1. Be a nice night to hang in the beer garden at O’Briens. But I’m neither endorsing or contributing, so it’s the backyard for me til the Hawks are on.

  2. I suspect we will so a lot more of these non-endorsement fundraisers. However, the money will be real.

  3. When Quinn gets serious about fundraising, he can post impressive numbers. Past few years he has raised a TON of money for the Dem Govs Association. It’s good to see now he’s getting serious about raising money for his primary.

  4. The money is real, but it’s basically telegraphing that even Quinn’s supporters are looking for a better candidate.

    It’s like a girl agreeing to go to the prom with the first guy who asks her simply to assure that she has a date, but then shamelessly flirting with the other guys in school trying to upgrade the first chance she gets….

  5. I love O’Briens. Maybe I’ll stop by.

  6. Not a fun time if you are a traditional Dem donor who depends on the state for some business. Pick two to tick off:

    1) A sitting governor
    2) The Madigans
    3) The Daleys

  7. @FakeBillRauner: So this means I’m off the hook for fundraising for Rahm. Right? That was just fundraising, not endorsing.

    You mean it doesn’t work like that? Darn. Now I’m stuck with the mental image of Rauner and Diddy hanging out.

  9. Anyone know how much a ticket is for this one?

  10. Most impressive is that Larry Walsh is behind Quinn. Hynes ran up big numbers against Quinn in 2010 with Larry Walsh’s tacit support. This is a big, big deal for the Governor’s re-election.

    You apparently didn’t read the excerpt.

    Comment by Rich Miller Monday, Jun 17, 13 @ 3:23 pm

  12. Rich, I actually did. Larry Walsh is hosting a fundraiser for the Governor. His organization will be behind him too. Larry Walsh didn’t formally endorse Dan Hynes either, but he sure did deliver for him.

  13. Wiz FTW!

  14. This is one step beyond the oft-heard “I’m absolutely with you but for (business/personal/political) reasons, can’t be seen to be endorsing you.

    Bullpuckey!

    If you endorse and give your name it means something. If you don’t, it means bupkus. Period.

    Comment by Chicago Cynic Monday, Jun 17, 13 @ 4:52 pm

  15. Cynic, couldn’t disagree more. It matters if you’re a vote producing machine like Larry Walsh. Endorsements don’t deliver votes, the work is what matters. And as I said before, Larry Walsh will likely be working on behalf of Pat Quinn.

    Comment by WizzardOfOzzie Monday, Jun 17, 13 @ 5:09 pm

  16. Larry doesn’t generally raise money or provide soldiers for anyone but himself. This is a big deal.

    Comment by Hawkeytown Monday, Jun 17, 13 @ 8:08 pm

  17. Oh itt’s as Endorsement alright, for Walsh to stick his neck out like that with the Atmosphere as it is, or most definitely at least enough of a Sign to say to Pat Quinn–not to worry: when push comes to shove, Guv., we Dems. here in Will County’ll be in your Corner….

    Comment by Just The Way It Is One Monday, Jun 17, 13 @ 8:09 pm

  18. That was meant to read “…it’s….” (of course)! I’m really not THAT poor of a speller!
